Southwest Sabres to hold Scarecrow Weekend fundraising events By Sandra Vinck The 2016 Southwest Sabres football season is underway. The crew has been working hard in cardio, drills, and game plays since hitting the field in mid August. This year’s roster of 28 includes players from Souris, Reston, Hartney, and Wawanesa. They play 9-man football in the Rural Manitoba Football League, which consists of seven league games plus playoffs. The schedule has the Sabres travelling to Swan River, Dauphin, Moosomin, and Neepawa. Home game opponents will be Virden, Park West (Shoal Lake), and East Parkland (Ste. Rose). This year’s team is coached by Brian Elder, Ryan Gilliard, Aaron Turnbull, Jason Harvey, and Zach Harvey, and is managed by Sandra Vinck. Due to the extensive travel costs and the rising price of equipment, the team needs to raise some money. They are holding a garage sale on Saturday, September 24 at 64 Willow Avenue East near the school. Following the sale, the club will host a meat draw at Murphy’s Lounge starting at 5:00 p.m. Come out and support the Southwest Sabres on Saturday, September 24.
2016 Southwest Sabres Football Schedule: Thursday, September 29 • Parkwest @ Southwest Friday, October 7 • Virden @ Southwest Friday, October 14 • Virden@ Southwest Wednesday, October 19 • Southwest @ Dauphin Saturday, October 29 • Semi-finals Saturday, November 5 • Finals All home games start @ 4:30 p.m. at Souris School. Come out and cheer on your Southwest Sabres.
The Southwest Sabres football team held its season opener Friday, September 16, with a 39-26 win over East Parkland. The next home game is on Thursday, September 29, when Parkwest will be here to take on the Sabres who sit at 1-1. Come out for some entertaining football action and cheer on our Southwest Sabres! Racing to return to Souris
PASCAR and the Souris Race Track will be hosting stock car racing on Sunday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m.... this is our 5th race of the 2016 season and our rescheduled Invitational Race Day that was originally scheduled for July 10. The Invitational Race Day is when we invite all racers from our catchment area to come and join us at the track. Originally, we had set the day to compliment the Souris Fair and Rodeo. Our new date is set to compliment “Scarecrow Day” kickoff in the Souris Area. Be sure to come out to Souris & Area and take in the events including a car show and PASCAR racing! We are expecting V8 stock cars from the area... and hopefully beyond... cars like the Smith Motorsports cars sponsored by Go Tire are expected to come out and play with us on a track that many in the area have run on for generations. The race is sponsored by Tri Wave Construction! Update Scott Bromley won the last feature race, taking advantage of the battle behind him as Tim Graham and Jay Burton fought each other to try and catch Scott. Scott opened up a healthy lead through the race to see it evaporate when the yellow flag came out for a roll over in corner 1 & 2. Fortunately, Doug Morrow walked away from the wreck and Scott held on to win the race. Jay, Tim, Scott and Carl Kynoch will be out to see if they can win this weekend and move up or keep their points lead. Jay is the current leader with 378 points and Tim, Scott and Carl are all within 15 points of each other. Each race day is worth 100 point - so any of the top 10 racers could easily be challenging for the lead. Our points system is similar to the NASCAR system and it is set up to reward consistency... thus
encouraging every racer to make every race - if they want to challenge for the points lead. We are hoping to Doug Morrow back after the rolling the car three (3) times in the feature race... I do not expect he will be in his old car - there was not much left of it. Fortunately, the safety systems like the cage, belts, seat and window net did their job and kept our driver safe. First place is Jay Burton our track points champion from last year... he won the first race of the year and has held the points lead since then with consistent, smart and quick racing. Second place in points is Tim Graham who may have a slight advantage because he is the track maintenance guru... and likely knows the track and clay/dirt better than anyone else in the pits or the stands. Third place is Scott Bromley - a founding member - Scott is running strong with his original car (as is Jay) and is poised to take second or third if Jay or Tim to slip up. Fourth place is Carl Kynoch a fiery experienced competitor that despite not winning a feature - this year - is tight in the points chase. With less than 15 points between 4th and 1st... the top of the points order is tight and likely to change.. Racers can accrue as much as 100 points per race day... that would be perfect - wins in every race. We have yet to see that at the Souris Track! Although, we have seen some very close... 98 is the record so far! Please feel free to stop out on Sunday to check out the races and cheer on one of these racers or... one of our other racers as they battle each other and the conditions and harness their own excitement/ adrenaline to bring their cars to the front and over
the finish line!! A reminder Races are at the PASCAR Souris Airport Raceway at 1:00 p.m.... and there is no cost to attend. This race - September 25 - is hosted by Tri Wave Construction. PASCAR’s primary focus is a 4 cylinder stock car class... that includes cars like: Chev Cavaliers, Pontiac Sunbirds, Dodge Neon (fastest car last year!! – winner of the first race in 2016), Ford Mustang or Escorts, Nissan, Porsch 924 or 944 (Yes!! A Porsche!!), Honda/ Acura Integra, Toyota MR2 (winner of the last race in 2015) and many more. PASCAR is a volunteer based non-profit group promoting motorsport in our region, please come out on Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. and support keeping our roads safe by educating and providing a venue to take racing off the street... and put it on the track. So, mark it in your calendar and plan to come out and have fun at our 5th race day of the 2016 season. Keep checking our website and facebook pages for updates... on the track conditions and weather as well as the point race!! Our racers run for points... no cash prizes - yet!! :) Check us out at www.pascar.ca/> or our facebook page at Pascarmanitoba... www.facebook.com/Pascarmanitoba/. Please let us know if you have any questions! Hope to see you at the track!! A quick reminder - admission is free - PASCAR is a non-profit venture run by local volunteers that is funded through community support from businesses, racers and spectators. There is no gate (fee) and a silver collection is available for anyone who wishes to support PASCAR. We also accept donations of time, services and products. PASCAR is intended to be affordable family fun for everyone involved.
RCMP respond to three significant collisions across Manitoba “In a span of less than 10 hours on Saturday, 3 people died and 11 were injured on roads and highways throughout Manitoba. This is a tragedy,” said Inspector Ed Moreland, Officer in Charge of Traffic Services for the Manitoba RCMP. “We are continuously seeing drivers put their lives and the lives of others at risk by driving impaired, speeding or simply not paying attention. There is no possible excuse for this behaviour and unless all Manitobans commit to safe driving, this loss of life will continue to occur. For those drivers on our roads that choose to put the lives of others in danger, the Manitoba RCMP will be doing everything it can to stop them and hold them accountable for their actions.” All of the incidents below occurred on Saturday, September 17 between 12:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. At approximately 12:30 p.m., RCMP re-
sponded to a four vehicle collision at the intersection of Pipeline Road and the Perimetre Highway. Emergency personnel provided medical care to nine people on scene. A 9 year old female was transported by ambulance in critical condition. A 71 year old female was also transported to hospital in unstable condition. Both remain in hospital and are now in stable condition. The initial investigation has revealed that a vehicle travelling southbound on Pipeline Road failed to stop at a red light and was struck by a mini-van travelling eastbound on the Perimetre. The investigation is ongoing. At 12:50 p.m., Brandon RCMP were dispatched to reports of seriously injured males in an ATV on Provincial Road 340, approximately 8 km south of Shilo, MB. The initial investigation has revealed that the ATV was travelling at a high rate of speed in a ditch beside Provincial Road 340 when it came upon an embankment.
The slope of the embankment, combined with the speed, caused the ATV to travel through the air. The landing of the ATV resulted in serious injuries to the two males within, both were wearing seatbelts and helmets. The males, aged 59 and 51 from Brandon, MB, were later pronounced deceased on scene. At 9:50 p.m., Killarney RCMP and emergency personnel were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover and reports of an injured male on Highway 23, 3 km east of Ninette, MB. Emergency personnel located the male laying on the highway near an overturned pick-up truck. The 32 year old male from Belmont, MB, was later pronounced deceased on scene. Two other adult males that were in the vehicle at the time of the rollover were located near the scene and transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the rollover.

On Wednesday, September 14, Cribbage players used four tables. Lorna Binions and Norm Davis finished the night with the highest score. The second prize was taken by Betty Devins with Joan Phillips and third place went to Cindy Janz with Amelia Morden. The 50-50 draw was claimed by Vonda Bodin. We again had 20 people ready to shout “Bingo on Thursday, September 15. Seems like some people had more luck than others. Three shouts came from Cindy Janz, Joan Phillips and Lil Atchison. Lil yelled on the LOONEY NUMBER and received an extra $26. Double hollers were made by Marie Neilson,
Helen Betle, Jack Rose and Marge Rose. The LITTLE HOUSE was worth $33 and it was split between Kathy Nylund and Linda Dodd. Linda is visiting from Okotoks, AB. On Friday, September 16, our meat draw was well attended and it was difficult to get more than one meat package. In fact, Sam Phillips was the only person to collect two packages. Marge Edgerton held the lucky ticket on the 50-50 draw and took home $118. The pot for “Chase the Ace totalled $643.50 and Adam Saban attempted to put it in his pocket. The Ace of Spades would not cooperate so someone will have a go at it next week. Our supper was beef stew, biscuits and ice cream. Our 2017 membership cards are now available. The cost is $45.

Farmlink Marketing Market Outlooks – Valuable, But Fallible While Prairie farmers are still grinding through harvest, the change everyone feels in the air tells us that winter is getting closer. This means that before long we’ll be entering the season of trade shows, meetings and a multitude of other events of interest for farmers. Many of these events will include some type of market outlook. Market outlooks can be useful. After all, in most cases the person giving the outlook spends most of their time analyzing and thinking about markets, much more so than almost any farmer has the time to do. Getting an informed opinion about what is driving prices today, and what the key influences will be going forward, is an important part of making good selling decisions. One shouldn’t assume that sitting through a couple of market outlooks during the win-
ter will give you anything close to enough information and analysis to make good marketing decisions for your farm. First, a market outlook presentation represents what is happening at a particular snapshot in time. Markets are very dynamic, and ever changing. Production expectations swing with every weather forecast, and demand patterns can evolve over the course of the year. Each marketing season also gives us a number of external factors that affect prices, whether it’s changes to government policies overseas, shifts in the broader macroeconomic environment, or major geopolitical events. Unless you are receiving regular, consistent and professional market analysis on an ongoing basis, you’ll be operating with stale information. No one has that perfect crystal ball, and sometimes the long term market effects of new information is uncertain, but at a mini-
mum you’ll receive fresh opinions based on the current situation. Second, market information is only the initial step towards a more comprehensive marketing plan that is right for your operation. An outlook presented to a room full of people won’t give you what you need to make a sales plan that best reflects the farm’s storage, cash flow needs, crop mix, risk tolerance and the many other things that makes your operation unique from everyone else’s in the area. Think of it as the difference between a ‘market outlook’ and making farm specific ‘marketing decisions’. It may seem like semantics, but it’s hard to overstate the difference when it comes to the effects on your business. Market outlooks can be interesting and informative. But don’t get lulled into thinking that this is all the information you’ll need to make efficient selling decisions for your farm.
Rain, rain stay away PLEASE! Harvest is in full swing in the Westman area and farmers are working long days trying to get the crops off and in the bins! With rain in the forecast for this weekend, they will be at it hard for the next few days! PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Sunrise Credit Union staff publish cookbook to raise funds for local organizations BRANDON, MB (September 19, 2016) - The staff of Sunrise Credit Union are pleased to announce that their cookbook, ‘From Our Family To Yours: Sunrise Staff Favourite Recipes’ will be available to purchase at every Sunrise Credit Union branch as of September 26, 2016. With locations in 14 southern Manitoba communities, each Sunrise branch chose its own local project or charitable organization to donate the proceeds to. “It was important to our staff to keep all the
money raised from the sale of each book, working in and for each of the local communities that Sunrise is a part of,” says Tammy Gillis Waldon, Office Supervisor, Cypress River branch. The idea for a cookbook was developed at a team-building event where staff representing each Sunrise community came up with the idea to create something unique and of value to bring benefit to their communities. The end result is a beautiful coil bound, 182 page cookbook with 357 tried and true recipes from appetizers and salads, to main dishes
and desserts. A lot of care went into this book. “Prior to publishing, some of our staff held a potluck style lunch to give colleagues a chance to sample their recipes. Not only did this help get everyone excited about the project, but trying out some of the dishes was a tasty treat!” says Lori Taylor, Deposit & Member Service Support, Hartney Branch. continued on page 9

Southwest Horizon School Division Sept. 8 These minutes are being released as an unofficial record of the meeting and are subject to amendment/ratification at the next regular board meeting of the School Board A special meeting of the Southwest Horizon School Division was held on Thursday, September 8, at 12:00 p.m. via conference call. Trustees present: Sven Kreusch (vice-chair), Cindy Cassils, Allan Downey, Michelle Edwards, Janice McDonald, Penny Oliver, Chris Page, Linda Phillips. Administration present: Carolyn Cory, Kevin Zabowski. Recording Secretary - Kevin Zabowski. Regrets: Scott Perkin (chair). The vice-chair called the meeting to order at 12:03 p.m. New Business Capital Reserves – Due to a number of factors including an unseasonably warm winter, less utilities usage and lower fuel costs, the 2015/16 school year operations budget will realize a surplus. Establishing capital reserves for programming from this surplus was discussed at the Board table. The results of the ThoughtExchange process the Board undertook that gathered feedback from community members, as well as through discussions that Superintendent Cory has had with students, concludes that our students and families want more educational options. Recommendations to establish capital reserves to fund these initiatives to provide the opportunities our students want for options were reviewed. Automotive Technician Program - Southwest Horizon has been exploring the opportunity to establish an automotive technician program in the Division. We have communicated this plan to the Public Schools Finance Board on a couple of occasions including on February 22, 2016, when PSFB requested proposals under their 2016/17 Public Schools
Major Capital Support and New Instructional Renewal Programs request. Page/Cassils: Be it resolved that we establish a $200,000 (two hundred thousand dollars) Automotive Technician Facility Reserve from the 2015/2016 accumulated surplus, subject to the Public Schools Finance Board’s (PSFB) approval. Carried. Technical Vocational Trailers - In 2013 and 2014, the Division purchased two trailers which were then renovated into classroom space that is allowing Wawanesa to offer a small engines course as well as a drafting course. This decision has proven to be very successful as it provides students in Wawanesa the options for taking these courses. The Division would like to extend this opportunity to other schools within the division. A proposal was discussed to purchase two Modspace trailers, similar to the trailers we rented for Souris School during their recent renovations due to water damage and renovate them into technical vocational trailers. Because these trailers are portable, we would have the option of moving the trailers amongst our various schools in the division to allow students in many of our communities to have access to some technical vocational education as opposed to keeping the trailers stationary. Phillips/Edwards: Be it resolved that we establish a $150,000 (one hundred fifty thousand dollars) Technical Vocational Trailer Reserve from the 2015/2016 accumulated surplus, subject to the Public Schools Finance Board’s (PSFB) approval. Carried. Technical Vocational Equipment Replacement - With offering more vocational programming, the specialized equipment required to operate the programs needs regular replacement. Oliver/McDonald: Be it resolved that we establish a $25,000 (twenty-five thousand
dollars) Technical Vocational Equipment Replacement Reserve from the 2015/2016 accumulated surplus, subject to the Public Schools Finance Board’s (PSFB) approval. Carried. Wawanesa Wall Upgrade/Window Replacement - In 2013, the Board of Trustees had established capital reserves to conduct exterior wall upgrades in three of our School Division communities. Wawanesa School is the next school that could use a similar upgrade. This upgrade would include a wall repair as well as a window replacement McDonald/Edwards: Be it resolved that we establish a $125,000 (one hundred twenty-five thousand dollars) Wawanesa School Wall Upgrade and Window Replacement Reserve from the 2015/2016 accumulated surplus, subject to the Public Schools Finance Board’s (PSFB) approval. Carried. Waskada School Site Grading Project - The Board had hired Samson Engineering in 2014 to provide us with a plan to grade the school site in order to mitigate the water penetration into the building. The estimated cost for this work is $50,000. Cassils/Phillips: Be it resolved that we establish a $50,000 (fifty thousand dollars) Waskada School Site Grading Project Reserve from the 2015/2016 accumulated surplus, subject to the Public Schools Finance Board’s (PSFB) approval. Carried. Bus Fleet Reserve - The Board of Trustees discussed allocating funds to the school bus reserve for future school bus purchases. Page/Phillips: Be it resolved that we establish a $335,000 (three hundred thirty-five thousand dollars) School Bus Reserve from the 2015/2016 accumulated surplus. McDonald/Downey: Be it resolved that we adjourn the meeting. The next Regular Board Meeting will be held on September 14, 2016, at the call of the Chair. The meeting adjourned 12:27 p.m.

Solutions & Substitutions by Reena Nerbas
Hello Reena, Can you please tell me the best natural solution for unclogging a slow kitchen drain? I’m in a condo, on the third of four floors and the drain often gurgles. Someone on my Strata council suggested using Liquid Plumber but I would prefer something more natural. I would appreciate any suggestion you may have. Thank you. Catherine Dear Catherine, In a jar combine 2 tbsp. cream of tartar, one quarter cup baking soda and 1 tsp. salt. Drop in the drain, chase with boiling water. Repeat as necessary. Or pour half cup salt down the drain, followed by boiling water or vinegar. Extra tip: Don’t toss flat cola into the garbage; instead pour it into drains to keep them fresh. If this is not effective consider having the pipes under the sink taken apart and thoroughly cleaned. Dear Reena, I am an elderly woman and wear Tena panty pads because I leak so heavily. I also wear vinyl pull on panties over them. Instructions say to wash and dry. They are soft when they come out of the dryer but within 5 minutes, they become stiff and crackle when I walk. Would you
or your readers know how to treat the vinyl without the fabric becoming stiff? Mary Dear Mary, Unfortunately many others have commented that the vinyl cannot be softened and regularly stiffens after drying. However, try the following; fill a tub less than half full with lukewarm water. Add two drops of a mild liquid dishwashing detergent like Ivory and mix. Turn the pants right side out with the waist hanging down. Slide them into the water until they are completely covered. Swirl the pants in the water for a few seconds (not minutes) and remove. The entire process should take less than thirty seconds. Hang the pants to dry. Dear Reena, I do hope you can help me. I was treating my arthritic hands in a paraffin wax bath and accidently splashed some on one of my beige suede dining room chairs. I was able to scrape some of it off but there is still a dark spot remaining. Do you have any solution for removing the stain? HELP! Marlene Hi Marlene, You want to be careful when cleaning the area not to scorch it. Place a single layer of brown paper on the wax area and move a warm
iron over the wax. Move the paper around to soak up all wax. Next sprinkle baking soda onto the wax stain and brush the area with a damp stiff brush to restore the nap. Handy Life Hacks: • I use a piece of Silly Putty to clean the keyboard of my computer. While the computer is turned off, press Silly Putty onto keys, the dust and grime sticks to the putty and lifts it out. Submitted by Kristi • I found a way to encourage my five year old to eat her peas. Start by softening a container of frozen yogurt or ice cream by placing it on the counter at room temperature for 15 minutes. Stir in a few chocolate chips and a few handfuls of frozen peas. Re-freeze the yogurt and eat. Submitted by Lawrence • My facial skin seems much softer now that I use a banana mask once a week. Mash up a banana and spread it on your face. Leave for 10 minutes and rinse. Submitted by Mandy Note: Every user assumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. The Gazette Local farmers develop new iPhone app Jeff and Sheila Elder of Wawanesa farm 2,600 acres and have always been interested in trying to find ways to improve farming practices. Their most recent interest comes in the form of developing an app to help determine grain moisture levels. Jeff was interested in an app that could replace all of the tables that he currently downloads and prints off to determine the moisture of the grain using his 919-moisture meter. Sheila began learning how to program in the Apple language, Swift. Apple Inc. accepted the Elder’s app and began offering it at The App Store for $2.79 in April 2016. • • • The Gazette Pleasant Valley Golf Course under new ownership Wally and Vi Hall sold the 18-hole Pleasant Valley Golf course on June 1 to Chad and Kevin Berry and Doug and Bruce Berry of Cypress River.
