$1,000 Red Card Campaign kickoff

PHOTO/SUBMITTED

by Darci Semeschuk Back by popular demand, the Souris and Glenwood (S&G) Chamber of Commerce is holding the Red Card Campaign once again this Christmas season. The Red Card Campaign has been a favourite with holiday shoppers since it’s inception more than a decade ago. The idea was to

encourage hometown shopping. The opportunity to win up to $1,000 seemed like a good motivator to do just that. Here’s how the Red Card Campaign works. Businesses that are members of the S&G Chamber of Commerce have ‘red cards’ in their businesses which they stamp in one of the four spots on the card

when a customer or client makes a purchases or does business with that company. Shoppers or clients must collect four different stamps and once the card is full they deposit it at the last place of business where they filled their card or they drop it in the drum at Canada Post. Every Friday from December 2 until December

23 those cards are entered into a draw for Souris Chamber Bucks. The cards are to be dropped off at Canada Post by 1:00 p.m. The first draw is for $100; the second is for $ 150; the third is for $250; and the fourth and final draw before Christmas is for $500! The project is intended to bring shoppers to Souris businesses

every week. The Chamber executive hopes that some of the dollars spent over the holiday season will stay at home with local retailers. If you are out shopping in Souris, remember to have your red card stamped and enter for your slice of $1,000 in Souris Bucks!

Remembrance Day Poem Editor’s note: The following poem did not run alongside Anna’s photo in last week’s issue. Our apologies to Miss Hume and to our readers. By Anna Hume

Poppies are red, Stones are grey. How can man live this way, the wind is blowing, The peace of all the men hat died. Blood is red, Sky is grey. All these men have died this way, war is done. Peace is here but all their families start to tear. Roses are red, Graves are grey. Their families go and visit each day. They put a rose on the grave stone,

some families have cried on their own. Poppies are red, Stones are grey. Everyone will remember this day.

This is a poem written by Anna Hume, a Grade 8 student at Souris School. Poetry is a part of the ELA ciriculum at the school and Anna says it’s one she enjoys. Additionally, she says her interest in Remembrance Day was spurred on by the study of all the major wars in here history class. “It is interesting to know the history of the wars, everything that has happened,” remarked Hume. “I think the world has learned from that but maybe not enough. There’s still hope.” Anna is the daughter of Raymond Hume and Christina Hume.

Souris Chamber puts push on “shop local” this Christmas

Page 3, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, November 25, 2016

by Darci Semeschuk The Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce is “sweetening the Christmas shopping deal” this year in an effort to try and give member businesses a little bigger piece of the Christmas shopping budget. “We decided to offer an incentive to shoppers who may be looking to get a little more for their dollar this year,” remarked Tara

Mills, executive member of the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce. “Everything costs more, so if we can encourage shoppers to spend some of their Christmas money at home, we’re going to try and help with that,” said Mills. Mills is referring to the campaign that sees the Chamber sell “Chamber Bucks” at 10% premium.

You purchase $100.00 and you receive $110.00 and in turn, that money is spent a local Chamber members. “Of course, we have set a limit of up to $10,000 and we’d be thrilled to meet that goal,” remarked Mills. “The Chamber would be on the hook for the extra 10% but it’s worth it if that much more money stays with our members businesses.

RCMP report Compiled by Robin Blecker Highlighted calls for service in Souris RCMP area were as follows: November 15 • A Brandon youth was convicted of weapons offences relating to a Souris Detachment file from September, 2016. November 18 • A report of a theft from a business in Wawanesa. Two fencers were stolen from their boxes and the empty boxes were returned to the shelf. If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact Souris RCMP. November 19 • Souris RCMP responded to a call of three dozen shots heard

in the Municipality of Grassland. Patrols were made, but nothing out of the ordinary. No other calls received. November 20 • An intoxicated male was located outside the Detachment. The male did not want to go home. He was arrested under the IPDA. While on route to Brandon Correctional, he acknowledged that he took some pills as well. He was transported to Brandon Hospital to be cleared medically before being lodged at Brandon Correctional. Friday FYI: CROSSWALK ALERT! Did you know that we have marked and unmarked crosswalks in

Souris? We do! There has been a dramatic increase in complaints regarding vehicles driving through crosswalks while pedestrians are crossing. Parked cars can make it difficult to see some small walkers, so please make sure you slow down so that you have time to stop! It takes a village to raise a child. It takes one speeding car through a crosswalk to kill one. False alarms: 1 Speeding: 11 Other Traffic: 9 Souris RCMP-GRC Emergency: 9-1-1 Non-emergent crime: 204-483-2123 Administration (Criminal Record Checks): 204-483-2854.

We have some terrific businesses right here in Souris and it shouldn’t be too difficult to spend that extra money.” Mills commented that Home Hardwares’ Scott Murray first brought the idea to them. “We thought it was kind of unique and we sure hope people agree.” The Chamber will be on sight at Chicken Chef and Woodfire Deli

Monday, December 5 & 12 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. All shoppers have to do is come out and buy their Chamber Bucks to receive the extra 10%. If

you can’t make the two evenings, then you can go to the Plaindealer’s office between December 5 and 15 during regular office hours to buy your Bucks.

by Darci Semeschuk Souris Donor’s Choice funds were handed out at their annual general meeting on November 21. After celebrating a large increase in donations in 2015, up $14,500 from 2014 to over $57,000, the numbers were down once again in 2016. In total, $47,120 was collected during the annual campaign. Despite the drop in donations, chairperson Ken Wiebe was happy with the amount.

“We were happy to receive this amount for 2016 and not overly disappointed that it is down slightly from 2015,” he stated in a phone interview Tuesday. “We have a good team put together and look forward to the future.” The Souris District Donor’s Choice Committee was established in 1996. Every spring a donation campaign is conducted on behalf of a maximum 25 registered charitable organizations. One hundred

percent of all funds collected go directly to these charities. The 2016 Committee is as follows: Chairman -Ken Wiebe; vice-chair - Shannon Kohut replacing Betty Tanguay; treasurer - Rhonda Williams replacing Rae McBurney; secretary - Bev McGregor; campaign chairperson -Roxy Kowalchuk; Lisa Tosh - public relations. A representative from each of the charitable organizations was in at-

tendance to receive their cheque and all of them appreciated the generosity of the community residents. The donations amounts for 2016 are as follows: Alzheimer Society of Manitoba - Westman: $3,179; Canadian Cancer Society - $3,504; Canadian Mental Health Association - $1,144; CNIB - $1,144; Canadian Red Cross Society - $1,409; Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba $1,044; The Counselling

After what seems like an eternity, I am finally getting back to my books. I will start

by mentioning, at least briefly, some of the latest. Without question, the best book is ‘Abandoned Manitoba’, by Gordon Goldsborough. After some fair difficulty, I got this book one day after its formal launch

in Winnipeg. I subsequently read it and wrote to Gordon (an old friend and colleague) expressing my delight. He wrote back that he was coming to Brandon – and so I set about distributing fliers and such announcing the fact, and I sincerely hope that many of you were able to

Special treat for art lovers

attend his presentation or his book signing. Even more, I hope that you have been able to obtain a copy for yourselves - and perhaps for some on your gift list. This is a wonderful book - both gorgeous to look at and fascinating to read. The stories are short and the book easy to dip into during such odd moments as you may have. He tells of many places we should all be familiar with - but generally aren’t - and imbues the history of each with a sense of immediacy and personality that makes them come to life. Overall, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a measure of its success that in less than one month it has run through its first printing but I am told more are on the way so you should be able to find it. I hope so. Trust me it’ll be well worth your time. After Gordon’s book, I went back to my more usual fare of fiction. I read two of Elly Griffith’s books ‘The Woman in Blue’, and ‘Smoke and Mirrors’. ‘The

Woman in Blue’ is a Ruth Galloway mystery - perhaps, and I can only hope, the last in that series. I truly enjoyed the first three or four books in this series, but the stories and characters began to grow old after that and in this latest book they, and their storylines, are clearly worn out. I hope the author puts them to rest now. ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ is the second in a newer series. It centers on the murder of two young children whose bodies have been ‘displayed’ in a manner suggestive of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. The fact that they were very much involved with their own little theatrical production adds weight to the idea that this murder has been intentionally ‘staged’ – but for what purpose? Max Mephisto, the renowned actor/magician, and DI Edgar Stevens once again team up to unravel the mystery, and do so in a fairly interesting fashion. I didn’t find the book as well done as Griffith’s earlier efforts, but it was okay.

Jeffrey Archer’s ‘This Was a Man’ brings to a close the Clifton Chronicles, a saga told through seven books. I have dipped in and out of the series over the past few years but will confess that I have not read them all. Perhaps, as a result, I found this book a bit choppy, as the author jumps from character to character frequently, often with significant periods of time elapsing between stories. It really seems as if he wanted to ‘tie up’ all the storylines, and he did so. Some really didn’t add much to the book, and I found the characters generally lacked depth - but I assume that’s because I haven’t read all the previous books. I did finally ‘get into’ both the characters and the story, and ended up liking the book well enough. For those of you who have read all or most of the previous volumes, I do believe you will enjoy this finale and will find that the author has done a good job of bringing his characters to a fitting conclusion.

Municipality of Souris Glenwood council notes submitted The Council for the Municipality of SourisGlenwood held its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, with the following members present: Councillors Sandra Denbow, Darcy Gerow, Mark Gillis, Joseph Goodwill, William Tanguay, Gerald Williams and CAO Charlotte Parham. Regrets: Mayor Darryl Jackson. Blue Hills Detachment Staff Sergeant Clint Wikander of the Blue Hills area attended the meeting to review the statistics report for the municipality for the previous quarter. Crime levels continue to be low in the area but there has been some break and enters and vehicle thefts that remain unsolved. Drug work has increased over the past year. There will be a change in staffing in the Souris Detachment. The promotion of the current corporal to Winnipeg and the pending transfer to Souris of a constable, has left a staff shortage. Council thanked Staff Sergeant Wikander for attending the meeting. Council members reported on various Boards and Committees which each represent as members of Council. by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I am wondering if you have any tips for removing discoloration on the rubber liner just inside the door of a front loading washing machine. I inherited my parent’s washer, and it came with this discoloration and I would like to clean it up if I can. Laurie

Dear Laurie, While wearing gloves, combine 1 gallon warm water with 1 cup liquid bleach. Apply to the seal; wait 5 minutes. Scrub with an old toothbrush. Rinse with water. Hi Reena, I am wondering whether you might have a solution for my problem. When we moved into our current

place, we didn’t like the way the kitchen cupboards looked and so we applied Mactac in the drawers and on the shelves. Now the time has come to remove the Mactac and I am dreading what may be left on the shelves and in the drawers. Do you have a suggestion as to how to remove glue off of painted wood? It’s been almost 16 years and it may be

stuck on there forever! Leonore Dear Leonore, Use a green scrubby cloth and the product Goo Gone to remove adhesive on cupboards. Goo Gone is sold in department and hardware stores and carries a citrus fragrance. Scrub and leave to dry; repeat the process and the adhesive should become a distant memory.

ally fails and the object falls to the floor. Also removing the remaining tape off of the paneling will remove the panel finish, even with just a wet rag. Years ago, I discovered that you can use S-shaped curtain hooks to hang things that have significant weight without making large holes in the paneling that you would get with store bought hollow wall anchors. They also come in different sizes. Use a sharp pointy tool like an ice pick and make a very small hole in the paneling. Slide the pointy end (the narrow side) of the S-hook into the hole and push it down till it locks in at the top. You now have an inch or two of support behind the wall. The open side of the S-hook where you hang your item/picture can be bent with two pliers and trimmed off with wire cutters to suit your needs. Try to anticipate your need and complete the bending before you mount the hook; this makes the job easier. The S-hooks are strong making them impossible to fall. If you decide to remove the S-hook you only have a tiny hole in your paneling which is barely noticeable. Submitted by Michael. Dear Reena, What is the best way to keep fried foods crispy for a long time? Jameson Dear Jameson, After frying foods place them on a cooling rack. This method prevents food from resting on a surface and becoming soggy because the oil has a chance to drip out, and as air circulates under the food it remains crisp. If your goal is to transport fried food, cool the food on a rack. Place into brown paper bags and reheat on a baking sheet lined with a wire rack before serving. Extra Tip: This method works for homemade waffles as well to prevent them from becoming soggy. Feedback from Experienced Reader: Dear Reena, I have worked at a high end hotel for years. In order to properly clean mirrors we use the following technique: Use a good quality damp micro fibre cloth. Dry with a micro fibre drying cloth (no commercial cleaners needed). Priscilla Tip for picture hanging on paneling • Hanging items on paneling where there is a stud behind is easy because a screw, nail or hanger can be secured. In between the studs, where the wall is hollow is a bigger problem. The paneling may be as thin as 1/8 of an inch, which doesn’t give you a secure mount for anything with weight. Using sticky tape hangers is not a good solution since the tape eventu-

Learning the basics of skating is often done during public skating times. Thankfully, Souris has two great sponsors, Falcon Enterprises and Subway, that make it easy for parents to get their kids on the ice. Pictured: Families enjoy the sponsored public skating at the Souris Arena.

Southwest Cougars big wins Page 12, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, November 25, 2016

submitted by Grant Moffatt The Southwest Cougars picked up their third win in a row with a 2-1 win over Yellowhead in Shoal Lake Friday night and then dropped the first place Winnipeg Wild with a 3-2 win on home ice Saturday night. The Cougars opened the scoring in both games and picked up four points to move to 10-7 on the season and into a sixth place tie with the Pembina Valley Hawks. Riley Wallace turned aside 45 shots for the win in Shoal Lake while Randy Cooke turned aside 31 pucks in the win over the Wild. Wallace and Cooke both earned their fifth win of the season. McCullough Park scored a power play marker midway through the second period in Yellowhead when he took a feed from Dylan Fontaine and Carson Boyechko and roofed the shot from the right faceoff circle to open the scoring. The Chiefs went into the weekend in a goal scoring drought and continued until Benoit Mowbray evened the score with a power play marker at the 11:45 mark of the third period. Mowbray came right back down and

The Southwest Cougar AAA Midget hockey team hosted the Winnipeg Wild last weekend and wild it was! After the final buzzer, the Cougars came away with an exciting 3-2 win. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER hit the post as the teams played scoreless the rest of the way. With time running down, and what looked like overtime, Jay Webber held the puck in at the line and Callum Fortin fed Tanner Andrew in front of the net and he jammed the biscuit behind Reese Jones for the game winner with 15 sec-

onds left in the game. The Cougars fired 26 shots on the Chiefs net as the Cougars improve to 9-7 on the season. The Cougars faced another stiff test on Saturday night when the first place Wild made the trip to Souris. The teams played a scoreless first period. Caley

Barscello opened the scoring with his fifth of the season from Jody Chudley and Carson Boyechko when he jammed the puck home six minutes into the second. The Wild evened the score in the third when Kyle Bettans roofed one from the right side in the eighth minute. The Cougars continued to

battle. Josh Wiens stripped the puck at the Wild blue line and went down the wall and fed Tanner Andrew for the 2-1 lead at 10:39. Callum Fortin then found the back of the net with a wrister from Caley Barsello 90 ticks later. The Wild poured it on but failed to beat Randy Cooke in the Cougar’s

net until they scored with the goalie pulled and 21 seconds left in the game. That was it as the Cougars gutted out their second upset on the weekend and third in a row. The Cougars play host to Kenora this Friday night before taking on the Pembina Valley Hawks in Morden next Sunday.
