If you travel to Souris, you’ll be captivated by our Peacock ambassadors. Kaitlyn and Makayla Harper of Calgary, Alberta found that out in a hurry when they came to visit grandparents, Judy and Don Smutko last week. The two budding chalk artists couldn’t resist doing a portrait of one of the beautiful creatures that roam the town. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER
Folks, start your Scarecrows! By Darci Semeschuk 2016 will be the twenty-fifth year of Scarecrow days in Souris and the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce wants to see some terrific scarecrows lining the streets. In fact they are putting up $250.00 in Souris Bucks to the best scarecrow! Scarecrow days 2016 will run September 23 – 25 and there is a whole schedule of events coming up. Organizers, Gary and Deb Noto are in the process of finalizing all the details but we can tell you that the weekend kicks off with a
barbecue at RBC on Crescent Avenue. At this time, the winner of the Best Scarecrow of 2016 will be announced. The organizers are hoping to see many scarecrows throughout the community to help commemorate the 25th year. Participants must register to be qualified for judging. A committee will travel throughout Souris the week of September 19 and one winner will be chosen from all registered. You must have your scarecrow, along with address registered by the morning of September 19. You may do this by calling
204-483-2070 or stopping in at the Plaindealer’s office, 53 Crescent Ave. West in Souris. Remember there will only be one winner – the 25th Anniversary Champion Scarecrow! In addition to the scarecrow competition, there will also be the town wide yard sales on September 24. Registration forms will be in the newspaper in the near future but you want to get a head start on it, you may stop at the Plaindealer’s office anytime to get your home on the map. The fee will be $5.00. Stay tuned for more exciting Scarecrow Days news.

Multiple Weapons and Driving Charges Laid by Manitoba RCMP following Traffic Stop
On August 23, 2016, at approximately 4:00 pm, a RCMP Westman Traffic Services officer stopped a vehicle for speeding eastbound on Highway #1 near Oak Lake, MB. The vehicle was caught travelling in excess of 150 km/hr. The vehicle, a black pickup truck, stopped but fled before the officer made contact with the driver. At the same time, the officer was informed that the vehicle had been previously reported stolen in Alberta. The vehicle proceeded to drive through the median ditch and into the opposite lane of Highway #1 towards oncoming traffic. The officer terminated the pursuit and continued to follow at a safe distance.
No collisions were reported. The officer later observed the vehicle turn onto a gravel road. The Virden RCMP detachment was notified and two officers set-up ahead of the suspect vehicle. The vehicle failed to slow down for the officers, lost control and swerved into a ditch full of water and came to a stop near Road 50 N and Road 143 West. Both the driver and passenger were taken into custody without incident. They originally provided false names but have since been positively identified. A loaded pistol and a sawed-off pellet gun made to look like a sawed-off rifle were found in the vehicle and seized.Joseph Kardelis (32) and Jake Pinder (22), both from Alberta, face several charges includ-
ing flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, firearms charges, failing to comply with various court orders and possession of property obtained by crime. Each also had out of province arrests warrants. “This was a very dangerous situation for our officers and for the public.” said Sgt. Mark Hume, RCMP Westman Traffic Services. “The rapid and professional response of our officers throughout the incident was critical to the safe apprehension of two armed and wanted individuals who appeared to have no regard for public safety.” The suspects are scheduled to appear in Brandon Provincial Court today. They remain in custody.

A little young to get behind the wheel? Maybe but the Souris Valley recreation Department and Manitoba Public Insurance believe that educating children on the basic rules and signs of the road can’t begin soon enough. That’s why they team up to bring Mini Car Town to Souris. Aimed at children 4-7 years of age, the free program allows drivers to negotiate a track and learn the basic signs. It was a fun and educational event for all the children in attendance. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Our office hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., phone 204-483-3106. I took a few days off and Teenie was here doing all the work. The crops were amazing; Saskatchewan actually had lots of rain so if they can get the grains in the bins it should be a good year for them. Now having said all this, Souris has some pretty nice homes and yards too. We can be proud of our campgrounds and our Bridge and Museums too. Maguire to host open house submitted Maguire, Member of Parliament for BrandonSouris, welcomes all constituents to an open house to be held at the new constituency office location, Unit-B 658 10th street in Brandon on Wednesday, August 31 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for lunch. “We are so pleased with the new location on 10th Street and delighted to invite the entire constituency to our open house to see the new work space,” said Maguire. “The location and the added space of the building, allows us to provide improved services to constituents with any case or concern, no matter the size.” The new location better serves constituents due to its central location in the city. The former location on 18th Street North was isolated, and caused many constituents without drivers’ licenses to take a taxi. The new location is within walking distance of many more residents and the office has noticed an increase in traffic since the move in early June. The buildings size also makes it possible to better interact and work with more constituents at a given time. The Brandon-Souris Constituency Office is a crucial link between constituents and the Federal Government. Its primary function is to aid a constituent in navigating the many programs and services that the Federal Government offers. From applying for Employment Insurance, difficulties collecting the Old Age Security Benefits, Canada Pension Plan or applying for infrastructure or grant funding, Maguire and his staff are ready to go the extra mile. The office is also well versed in aiding constituents in their wish to become citizens of Canada. This is an essential service provided to the people of Westman as the area has a rapidly expanding and diversified workforce. Maguire concluded, “If your schedule permits, I encourage everyone to come see the new office location. As always, my staff and I are here to stand up for the people of Westman and ensure that your voice is heard in Parliament.”

by Jo-Lene Gardiner Ag EC, Manitoba Agriculture What Erodes Profit? In agriculture, fluctuating commodity prices, input costs and unstable fixed costs, such as depreciation or investment costs, are well known challenges. How you monitor and manage the swings in prices and costs can be crucial to your business. Following are several things you need to watch for and do to ensure you stay profitable. When gross margins weaken because of declining commodity prices or increasing input costs, the situation needs your attention. It is essential that you determine your per unit costs of production, so you know what prices are needed to achieve a profit, or at the least, to minimize your losses. Knowing your costs can also protect your margins when you develop your marketing plan. Putting aside cash in profit years to put into capital purchases and put off purchases until margins improve are both smart decisions. Beware of over capitalization or making capital purchases that aren’t needed, like buying or trading machinery every year, running oversized or more expensive machinery than you need, or expensive land purchases. All can erode your profit. A bad debt structure, where too much debt is due too quickly, can lead to cash flow issues and squeeze your profits. If your operating loan limits aren’t high enough to make term payments and cover operating costs, it may result in significantly higher interest costs associated with trade credit, or perhaps using credit cards to prop up cash shortages. Some type of refinancing may be required to consolidate some debt to a more manageable level. The size of your operation is important. If it’s too small, draws for fixed costs may outstrip any profit, and without some type of non-

farm income, you may eventually be forced out of business. Having a risk management strategy is essential if you want to grow or maintain your profits. Top managers have contingency plans for most situations. They use risk management tools and programs such as crop insurance and AgriStability, and they lock in interest rates on their loans. It is also wise to have a written marketing plan and use professional services to provide marketing and management advice. These are challenging times. Decreasing
