The new venture for Loretta and Lon Turner, LT’s Corner Store, is nearing completion and estimates say that they could open their door in early July. Corner Store reopening by Darci Semeschuk Months of renovations are nearing an end for Lon and Loretta Turner and, if all goes well, Loretta’s new venture, LT’s Corner Store, will be opening its doors in early July. The Turner’s purchased the former convenience store in December, 2016, knowing that they had their work cut out for them. The long-closed building was in need of some tender loving care and major renovations. Having always enjoyed working with his hands, Turner says that was part of the appeal. “When we bought the store, it was mainly for Loretta but we knew it needed a lot of work,” he states. “Tearing it down wasn’t feasible and I enjoy doing that kind of wood working in my spare time. Plus the price was right.” Spare time isn’t something Turner has much of as he is the current Economic Development Officer for SourisGlenwood, but what he does have, he makes good use of. Evenings and weekends have been spent putting the building through a complete renovation. Both Lon and Loretta feel this is a great business opportunity for them
as well as it will serve a need in the community. They will offer a shopping experience outside of the usual spots in town and, in doing so, will create several new jobs in the community. Loretta will be the day-to-day operator of the business while Lon will be behind-the-scenes doing the bookkeeping and the heavy lifting. They will hire one more fulltime staff member and several part-time staff members. Both are excited to offer an outlet for local producers to sell their product. That may include vegetables and meat and, over time, they could expand into other products. Loretta was looking for another off-farm opportunity and now that their three children are getting older, the Corner Store model was the perfect fit for the young family. “We have a motto - Dairy, Meats, Groceries, and Treats,” jokes Turner. “Seriously, we just want to offer good food, good service, and good prices.” And who doesn’t want all of those thing? Stay tuned for further updates on the progress at LT’s Corner Store and you can follow them on Facebook, LT’s Corner Store of Souris.

I was talking to my cousin the other day and she had been helping her grandson who loves to make things with Lego. One of the many things he made was a “Trebuchet”.” Does anyone know what it is? It was not in my Scrabble dictionary, so I had to go onto the internet. Yes, I found the answer, can you? Give me a call when you do. Just for fun. On a serious note, we really do need drivers who will drive in Winnipeg (not often but there are times). Call us for more information please. Trip of a lifetime (part two) Page 4, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, June 02, 2017
Editor’s note: We sincerely hope you are enjoying this ‘trip of a lifetime’ taken by former Faith Community Baptist Church pastor, Don Oddie as he toured the Land of the Bible. The final instalment, part three will appear next week. Saturday, January 21 – Day 6 Shabbat Shalom! Shabbat breakfast is unlike the rest – a boiled egg or two cooked the day before, much cheese, fruit and yogurt. What incredible cheeses and yogurts Israel produces, and all the food is locally grown, not imported. This was our fullest day in the terms of walking (16,000 steps according to one of our group who was keeping track!): down, up, down, up, multiple stairs, and despite my bad knee, this day spoke volumes in my life. We began at the top of the Mount of Olives, where we took in the incredible view of Jerusalem and the Old City with its surrounding wall and the Vista of the Temple Mount! Hear some enjoyed a camel ride (five dollars US for about two minutes!) Our tour guide, Isaac brought what we read in the Old and New Testament to life. Yes, he knew the Jesus story very well, and for me, it was seeing
the story through new eyes, a very precious gift. We travel down the traditional, very steep Palm Sunday route, but as it follows right beside a Jewish cemetery, Isaac pointed out a more likely route that Jesus and his disciples may have taken from Bethany to Jerusalem that day. At the bottom we went first to the Church of the Agony and a portion Gethsemane that has been preserved next to the church where there were a number of ancient olive trees, one of which Isaac pointed out was likely about 2,000 years old. What if Jesus sat under this very tree? Then we went across the street to Gethsemane garden where we were booked for a quiet half hour. The name ‘western’ literally means ‘olive press’ and it was somewhere in this vicinity that Jesus prayed three times for the Father to take away the agony He was about to face. It was incredibly moving to sit there knowing the story and it was here that God quietly reminded me in a very clear voice that “this was for me.” We crossed the Kidron Valley and from here, we took the biblical story out of order. First we walked the Via Dolorosa, the ‘Way
of the Cross,’ which is carefully marked by fourteen stations, each station marking an event for Jesus the day of His crucifixion. We started at the Chapel of the Condemnation and ended up at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (you can see this on TV every Good Friday,) the traditional site of Jesus’ death and burial. But our guide told us that at station four and five (they are close to one another at an intersection,) there are divergent views, the other one ending at Golgotha (the place of the skull) and the Garden Tomb. We visited the traditional site of the Upper Room where Jesus is said to have shared His last Passover meal with his disciples. Historical evidence says that if this isn’t the exact room, it is right in the vicinity. From here we went to the house of Caiaphas, the High Priest who had Jesus arrested. It has been very carefully excavated and preserved, located under the present day church of St. Peter of Gallicantu. In the basement was a judgement hall/ torture chamber and on the other side, a deep pit that resembled a giant septic tank about thirty to fifty feet deep. Today there is a staircase leading to the bot-

One of the highlights of the trip for me was that I got to pray at the Western Wall. Note the access to the Temple Mount, a very Holy site, upper right background. On the Mount is also a cupola surrounding a bare piece of rock. Here, said our guide, is the site where Abraham is said to have offered his son, Isaac to God. tom and lights, along with windows in the top, but in Jesus’s day, the prisoner would have been lowered into the dark pit by ropes under his arms. It was big enough to hold our entire group of twenty-three and while there, someone read Psalm 88 which was open on the podium. A very fitting Psalm for the location! It is possible Jesus could have been held here the night of his arrest. Sunday, January 22 – Day 7 This was our day to visit the Temple Mount. All visitors must go through a checkpoint and be screened to be allowed entrance, and clothing, especially for women, must be extremely modest. Absolutely no shorts! This is a Holy Site. There we viewed the Al-Aqsa mosque, and the Dome of the Rock, which is not a mosque but a shrine. And that famous gold Dome? It is not gold plated, but solid gold. One of the temple mount police challenged our guide saying that there had never been a Jewish temple on this site, and that is the narrative held to by some in the Middle East today. But biblical history says there were two, and many today look forward to yet a third one. Obvi-
ously, this is a source of great conflict today! On the Mount is also a cupola surrounding a bare piece of rock. Here, said our guide, is the site where Abraham is said to have offered his son, Isaac to God. Then we went down below, through the Wall Tunnels, fairly narrow, and about a kilometre in length. Much excavation continues there today, all of it corroborating the Jewish story. And thanks to the power of God, my extreme claustrophobia never once showed his face. How do I know that? I asked him especially to deal with it at the beginning of the day. We went outside to one of the highlights of the trip for me. I got to pray at the Western Wall. You must wear a head covering to approach the wall, and I did have a hat on, but I felt that I was there at the invitation of God, so I removed my hat and put on my souvenir kippahs that they provide for visitors. But I was totally unprepared for what happened next. I approach the wall and reached out to touch it and as my hand came in to contact with it, it was positively electric, for lack of a better term. I was completely overcome by what I can only explain as the powerful presence of
God, and the tears began to pour down my face. I stood there, hand on the wall, praying for a considerable time, along with others from our group, and many Jewish people who pray there every day. From there, we visited the Davidson Centre, beginning with a ‘virtual movie’ of how Herod would have constructed it. Then we went outside to examine what has been uncovered by archaeological excavations - all of the details of the Roman occupation - about 70 A.D., when the temple was destroyed. We sat on the broad steps beneath Hulda gate listening to Isaac tell us that this is likely where Joseph and Mary found the twelve-year-old Jesus who had been missing for three days, sitting talking with the elders. And this is likely where Peter preached his famous sermon at Pentecost, which many date as the beginning of the church. Our day ended with a visit to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial. What a moving experience! The story of the attempted extermination of the Jewish people is told there in vivid detail. Most disturbing, but a ‘don’t miss’ if you visit Israel.

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, Can the dents in my stainless-steel fridge be repaired? Vi Dear Vi, There is a theory that if you heat the dents with a hair dryer or press dry ice onto the area and then blast it with cold air, the dents should release and vanish. After researching this theory, I have found it unsuccessful. The safest and least noticeable solution is to leave the dent(s) as is. Dear Reena, Is there a product that I can use to get rid of ants that is safe for pets and kids? Rita Dear Rita, There are several solutions for tackling ants. What works for one will not necessarily work for another since there is such a large variety of ant species but here are a few ideas that are safe for children. To begin with, seal all doors and windows. Next, many ants will stay away if they smell what they consider an unpleasant odour such as: cinnamon, garlic, tea leaves or coffee grounds. You can also sprinkle ant hills with dry oatmeal, cornmeal or Cornflake cereal. Another option is to make what I like to call ‘Rhubarb Tea’. In a stainless-steel pot, boil rhubarb leaves with water. Pour the cooled liquid onto ant hills. This helps get rid of ants and because of the oxalic acid in rhubarb, the pots will appear sparkly and clean! Another suggestion: Ants are territorial, so pile the dirt from one ant hill onto the dirt of another ant hill. Or push a metal pipe into ant hills and pour hot water and tea tree oil into the pipe. Feedback from Wise Contributors Freshening Your Home Dear Reena, Your suggestion regarding homemade air fresheners was so disappointing. You didn’t once suggest that a good airing of your home will help with freshening the air and reducing
odors. The industry has convinced us that clean fresh air is not a desired odor so we have to mask it with cinnamon, lemon, fresh linen, tropical fruits and all kinds of odors. I, am someone who must detour around the fragrance counters in large stores, use “fragrance free” laundry soaps and softeners and can literally start gag-
ging and coughing when I come into a space that has recently been “freshened”. It isn’t necessary. Keep your garbage, composting, bathroom and all other waste bins closed and emptied frequently, and open your windows every day (and doors where feasible), for 15 minutes so air can pass through and freshen naturally. mother used to do this even in winter, though only for a few minutes when it was cold and when few others were at home. Modern homes especially are super sealed and air gets trapped and “over used”, masking it with another odor doesn’t help, only fresh air can really freshen your home. Elaine

The Beautification Committee held a tea on Saturday, May 27, at the Fellowship Club in Souris to celebrate Canada’s 150 and the 20th anniversary of Souris Beautification. Under the leadership of Dianna McCallum, former members of the Horticultural Club and present members of the Beautification Committee and many friends all worked together to have a very successful tea. Eighty-four signed the guest book and enjoyed fancy sandwiches and dainties. Door prizes were donated by Plaza Petals and Sadler’s Creekside Greenhouse. Fashions from Timeless Treasures, Lagasse Art Studios and Sadler’s Creekside Greenhouse were shown by models Eleanor Thompson, Mag Kachanoski and Mckenna Page. Thanks to the efforts of many, the afternoon of fun was enjoyed and a profit of $610 was raised for Souris Beautification. The money raised will be put towards putting stone at the base of the “Petunia Tree”, which will be moved by Clint Heath, and buying bushes and perennials for the island. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER
