RBC honours Landers for community leadership

by Darci Semeschuk Mandy Landers volunteered in her community long before she joined the ranks at the Souris RBC three years ago. It’s just something she does and she knows that to have a successful community, you need to work to make that happen. “I was happy to be nominated for this award, that people notice what you’re doing,” Landers explained. “I don’t do it for the award, but more for the fact that I enjoy working with people and I love my community.” Landers was nominated for the Regional President’s Leadership award by her former co-worker, Cameron Francis. In that nomination he stated, “Mandy’s been a huge supporter of the community of Souris ever since she moved here 15+ years ago and is a chairwoman

on many boards. Currently, she is involved in the Town Beautification Board, Theatre Board, Canada 150 Board, and the Citizens on Patrol Board. In the past she has been a part of the Parks Board, Handi-transit Board, Cemetery Board, and Economic Development Board. She also served four years on the Town Council as a Councillor,” Francis wrote. “As a younger advocate, Mandy has been integral in helping more tenured committee members to open their minds to new ways of growth. She is courageous and passionate and these qualities have helped her succeed in her push for the involvement of younger community members and continued community growth!” Those achievements are just a few of the

things that Mandy has done for Souris. The list is extensive but it doesn’t include her many hours of volunteerism with the Souris sports teams, including rugby and football. Linda Swaenepoel presented the award to Landers and she had this to say, “I have been involved with some of the same activities as Mandy and I have noticed that she does go above and beyond to get things done,” stated Swaenepoel. “I read today that the strips on the award have meaning. Red and orange represents passion for community. The yellow represents the hope our work strives to bring. All of this is in the shape of a flame that lights the way for others. I can only hope that others do a portion of the community work that Mandy does.”

Landers awarded RBC Regional Presidents Leadership Award Mandy Landers’ love for her community has earned her an award for community service. She received the award from RBC in early October. She is pictured here with the Regional President’s Leadership Award. The colours of the award have meaning - red and orange represents passion for community; yellow represents the hope our work strives to bring. All of this is in the shape of a flame that lights the way for others. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK

Westman Region ranks second In Manitoba Public Insurance vehicle-deer collisions by Brandi Pollock Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) announced the statistics for each region in Manitoba on vehicle-deer collisions. This year, Eastman holds their spot as the number one region for having the highest number of these collisions. “By releasing this data annually, our intention is to raise motorists’ awareness about the potential dangers of vehicle-wild-

life collisions, particularly during the fall season when deer are most active along roadways,” said Ward Keith, vice-president, Business Development & Communications and CAO, Manitoba Public Insurance. The Eastman region endured more than 1,600 vehicle-deer collisions this year, based on statistics from 2012-2016. These statistics for the Eastman

region includes the communities of Steinbach, Lac du Bonnet, Anola, Birds Hill Park area, and Falcon Lake. The Westman region sits in the number two spot, right on the heels of Eastman, for the highest amount of vehicle-deer crashes in Manitoba, with 1,455 yearly collisions. Every year, approximately 350 people are injured in wildlife-related collisions, and in the last 10 years, seven people in

Manitoba have been killed due to animals on the road. In total, about 11,000 Manitobans are involved in vehicle-wildlife collisions every year according to Manitoba Public Insurance data. To raise awareness about the wildlife hotspots on the road and just how many accidents occur from animals being on the road MPI releases data every year. Along with that MPI is teaming up with the Province and City of Win-

17111BB0 17111BB1

nipeg to get high visibility signs at these hotspots. The province’s top 5 vehicle-deer collision regions are: 1) Eastman - 1,630 yearly collisions 2) Westman - 1,455 yearly collisions 3) Interlake - 1,115 yearly collisions 4) Pembina Valley 630 yearly collisions 5) City of Winnipeg 625 yearly collisions MPI’s Tips to Keep You Safe: • Slow down when you see wildlife crossing signs

and drive with extreme caution scanning the road ahead as well as shoulders and ditches. • Animals are normally more active at dawn, dusk and at night. • Be especially alert where brush and tall grass grow near the road. • Watch for the reflection of headlights in the eyes of a deer, or a dark silhouette. • Do not swerve if an animal does cross in front of your vehicle - brake firmly to reduce the impact between an animal and your vehicle.

Maguire seconds legislation to fix Credit Union headache

OTTAWA - Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, threw his full weight and support behind Bill C-379, which if passed, would amend the Bank Act to allow the use of the words “bank”, “banker” and “banking” by Credit Unions that are provincially regulated. Maguire seconded the legislation and has been working with local Credit Unions to make the necessary changes. The legislation was introduced in response to an advisory issued June 30 by the federal Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, which is now taking a strict interpretation of the Bank Act. Based on this inter-

pretation, the federal government could lay criminal charges against any credit union that uses the term “bank,” “banker,” or “banking”. “The federal government’s recent action in telling Credit Unions to stop using the words their members use to describe the work they do is absurd,” said Maguire. “This is absolutely ludicrous and is another sign of how out of touch Liberals truly are. That’s why our Conservative team is fighting back.” Since the announcement by the federal bank regulator, which banned the words to describe the services they offer Canadians, hundreds of westman residents have signed

petitions demanding the Liberals take action. To date, the Liberals have not promised to fix the problem and Conservative MPs are now leading the charge. Before Parliament resumed in September, Maguire hosted a meeting with the various Credit Unions in Western Manitoba to discuss ways to lobby the government to make the necessary changes and apply more public pressure on the government. It was at that meeting Maguire and Robert Sopuck, the MP for Dauphin-Swan RiverNeepawa, spoke about how they will continue to speak out in Ottawa and to keep the issue front and centre in the media.

Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for BrandonSouris, seconded Bill C-379, which would Credit Unions would allow the use of the words “bank”, “banker” and “banking”. This was in response to a blanket ban issued by the federal government which will result in Credit Unions paying considerably amount of money to update signs, stationary and other products. PHOTO/SUBMITTED In response to why Maguire is supporting Bill C-379 and westman Credit Unions in this fight so vigorously, he replied, “I will

always stand up for them. Thousands of westman residents are members and in some circumstances, the Credit Union is the only

financial institution left in the community”. In the weeks ahead Maguire will build up support for the legislation and will work across party lines to pitch its merits. He has pledged to continue to fix the “Credit Union calamity” as he has called the situation and to date, he is showing no sign of slowing down. He concluded by saying, “While others in Ottawa are spending their time on other matters, like ending up on the front cover of Rolling Stone and talking about their socks, our Conservative team is standing up for common sense. I know we can pass this legislation. Let’s get it done.”

Team Manitoba wins bronze at WHL Cup

by Darci Semeschuk Three Southwest Cougars, Cory King, Tyson Kozak, and Landon Roberts, along with other outstanding Midget players throughout Manitoba made up Team Manitoba U16. The team competed in the WHL Cup in Calgary October 18 - 22. Game one saw the boys face off against Team BC. It was a tight game from start to the final buzzer with a 1 - 1 tie after one period; a 2 - 2

tie after two periods and 3 - 3 tie after three periods of play forcing a shoot out. Cory King scored the first goal of the shoot out to lead Team Manitoba to a 4 - 3 win over Team BC. Team Manitoba met Team Saskatchewan in game two and were down two goals before coming back to tie the game at 3 3. A late penalty on Team Manitoba allowed Saskatchewan take a 4 - 3 lead and the boys were unable

to come back and lost their second game by a score of 4 - 3. Team Manitoba met Team Alberta and despite a strong showing, were unable to make it count on the score board. They lost that game 4 - 3 and Cory King notched his second goal. A second loss to Team Albert sent Team Manitoba to the bronze medal game against Saskatchewan. Manitoba came out strong winning by a score of 4 - 2.

Southwest Cougars

by Grant Moffatt The Yellowhead Chiefs visited Southwest for the second meeting of the year on Friday night. The teams played a scoreless first period. The Chiefs opened the scoring on a two man advantage at 9:09 of the second period. Jake Poole blasted a shot past Riley Wallace on the left side to open the scoring. The Cougars evened the score with 6 minutes left in the period. Tyson Kozak hooked up with Landon Roberts to tie the score with the Cougars first shot on net in the period. Cory King scored a power play goal 3 minutes later to give the Cougars the lead when his point shot found the net. Dylan Fontaine set the shot up. The Chiefs tied the score early in the third. With

time winding down, the Chiefs banged in a loose puck with 37 seconds left for the win. The Chiefs outshot the Cougars 28 to 19 with Riley Wallace took the loss in net. Sunday afternoon, in Morden, the Pembina Valley Hawks hosted the Cougars in the first meeting of the season. The Cougars turned the puck over in the first minute and the Hawks swept in for the one goal lead. They scored 90 seconds later and made it 3 zip before the period ended. The second period was scoreless. The Cougars got on the board early in the third when Callum Fortin hooked up with Hunter Andrew and Landon Roberts to make it a 3-1 game. That was it for the scoring as Randy Cooke faced 26

shots while the Cougars had 25 on the Hawk net. The weekend saw the Cougars record fall to 3 wins 9 losses in the first 12 games of the 48 game schedule. The Cougars have a tough weekend coming up when two of the top teams in the league, the Eastman Selects and the Winnipeg Bruins, pay their first visit to the Cougar den on Saturday and Sunday.

Local author promotes new novel Margaret Lawrence House, Neepawa, invited Manitoba author Rebekah Lee Jenkins to participate as their first writer in residence from October 25 to November 3, 2017. About the book: “The Night They Came For Til, they took me, too.” In the tenements of London England, 1904 is a dangerous time to be suffragettes on crusade. Shannon’s aunt Matilda “Til” Stone, gynecologist, suffragette, and all around tyrant, believes women should have the right to birth control and self-determination. After ten years spent at Til’s side, Shannon was trained as a midwife to be her right hand. After a brutal attack that was meant to destroy their work, Shannon is shipped

off to Canada to avoid the scandal around Til’s arrest. In Oakland, MB, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was assigned to start a cottage hospital and once it was complete, they were not allowed to run it. Shannon landed in women’s rights battle that shook the community and threatened the new hospital. Busy working as a midwife Shannon helped the women of the community find their voice while she found her own. Faced with a choice to live a normal life as a wife and mother or go back to England and crusade with her aunt, this book explores her choices and how they affected an entire community. “The Night They Came for Til” is a historical fiction novel based on true events.

About the Author: Rebekah Lee Jenkins lives and works as a hairstylist in Souris, Manitoba. Thirteen years ago, while working as an administrative assistant at the Town of Souris, she assisted the History Book Committee compile and verify research. The novel “The Night They Came For Til” evolved from that research. She is currently working on the prequel to “The Night They Came For Til”. “Hope in Oakland” is expected to be released in spring of 2018. The Avalon Theatre was the place to be on Thursday, October 26, as Gordie Mackeen and his Rhythm Boys treated the crowd to a great show. An appreciative audience saw onstage energy and exuberance with stellar musicianship as these multi-instrumentalist young men from Prince Edward Island treated them to an evening of fiddling, singing and dancing, east coast style. They really liked Souris and were amazed to see peacocks roaming the streets. They also remarked on a fine stage and very good acoustics at the Avalon Theatre. This performance was the second in our concert series. The Souris District Arts Council would like to thank the generous Woodfire Deli for providing a delicious meal for the performers. We would also like to acknowledge Jim and Isabelle Ludlum for their tireless support in making sure all Souris residents, regardless of mobility, are able to attend. The Municipality of Souris-Glenwood has generously provided the Handi-van for our concerts, and Jim and Isabelle do the transporting. As always, all our friends of the Arts supplied the yummy cookies at intermission. A great evening of entertainment to look back on. PHOTO/SUBMITTED

Dear Reena, What is the best way to warm up restaurant pizza so that it tastes as good as it did when it was fresh? Trudy Dear Trudy, While there is not just one way to heat up pizza, this is by far the most

popular technique. Place pizza piece in a skillet, let it heat on medium until the cheese bubbles. Some people say that this technique results in pizza that tastes even better than when it was fresh. Dear Reena, What is the best tip for cleaning windows, so that they don’t end up streaky? Mandy Dear Mandy, Spray the windows with vinegar, you can use 50/50 water and vinegar but, depending on your water, this may result in streaks. Wipe the windows with a good quality micro fiber cloth, and then dry the windows with 3 day old or older newspaper. Make sure that you clean your windows in the morning or evening when the sun is not too bright, as this will cause

the solution to dry quickly, leaving you with streaks. Some people like to polish windows with cornstarch and water. Dear Reena, Do you have any suggestions about how to stop myself from biting my nails? Esther Dear Esther, According to others who have struggled with nail biting, the most effective solution, other than wrapping each nail with tape is to polish nails with bitter nail polish. Buy yourself a fidget spinner or stress ball so that you keep your hands busy. Keep your nails trimmed short. Why Didn’t I Think of That? Purchase a perforated pizza pan and use it to bake

fries, chicken nuggets or anything else that requires flipping in the oven. Since the heat passes through the holes, onto the bottom of the food, there is no need to flip halfway through cooking time. Submitted by Hershley The best way to store fresh herbs, is to chop them and put them in water into an ice cube tray. Toss cubes into soups, sauces and stews for extra fresh flavor. Southwest Horizon School Division These minutes are being released as an unofficial record of the meeting and are subject to amendment/ ratification at the next regular board meeting of the School Board The regular meeting of the Southwest Horizon School Division was held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in Souris. Trustees present: Sven Kreusch (vice-chair), Allan Downey, Michelle Edwards, Janice McDonald, Penny Oliver, Scott Perkin, Linda Phillips. Administration present: Carolyn Cory, Kevin Zabowski. Recording Secretary – Michelle Blades. Regrets: Cindy Card of Thanks

Cassils (chair), Chris Page. The Vice-Chair called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. There was one addition to the agenda: Accessibility Training Edwards/Oliver: Be it resolved that we adopt the agenda, as amended Carried. Oliver/Edwards: Be it resolved that we approve the minutes from the regular board beeting of September 27, 2017, as circulated. Carried. Presentations/Delegations MNP Auditor, Matt Stie reviewed the 2016/17 year financial statements with the Board of Trustees. McDonald/Phillips: Be it resolved that the audited Financial Statements of Southwest Horizon School Division for the period July 2016 to June 2017 be received by the Board: A copy signed by the Chairperson and submitted to Manitoba Education. Carried. The Superintendent report to the Board included the following: Peer Support – Peer Support teams from Wawanesa, Hartney, Souris, Melita, Deloraine and Pierson met at the International Camp Koinonia on October 4 and 5. Peer Support members (high school age) receive ongoing skills training so that they can provide peer support and leadership for students in their school and beyond. Two years ago, we only had two schools involved so we are excited that the program is now available in six of our schools. Thank you to staff who make this a possibility for these students.

Satisfaction Surveys – Satisfaction Survey Reports for Pierson and Hartney will be published on the division and school websites respectfully, this week. I reviewed the survey results in detail with each administrator who then in turn met with staff as a part of the school planning process. Response to Intervention – Because of our work with Tom Hierck and our PLC focus, schools have taken unique approaches to provide specialized intervention time. The challenging question is “Can we let go of our structure to help those who need it?” If we believe that all students can succeed at high levels and that it is our duty to do whatever it takes, then we should be willing to remove roadblocks. Schools have blocked off time on a regular basis during which students can work with teachers in the areas they most need assistance or areas in which they require further challenge. Wawanesa School offers one class every other Tuesday during which all students in grades 7-12 work in a subject area and with a teacher as required. This time is called WOW, Work on Work and provides students with time to seek assistance, explore further, or simply catch up. Hartney School plans to offer WIN, Whatever I Need to Grades7/8 students who will have access to classroom teachers, resource staff and the administrator. Grades 9-12 students will have WIN time every second day 3 for one class. Waskada School offers

BOB, Build on Basics, for students in grades 1-6 every morning for 20 minutes with a focus on numeracy skills. Pierson School offers WIN time to students in grades 5/6, 7/8 and 9-12 at different times during the school cycle, but each group has access to staff on a consistent basis. Souris will provide common time across grades 1-6 for students to focus and practice numeracy skills in flexible groupings. Grades 7/8 will start WIN time at the end of November and plans are close to being in place for WIN time in grades 9-12. Melita and Deloraine Schools are using ZAP, Zeroes Aren’t Possible time. High School students who have an incomplete assignment in any class meet with Mr. Franklin (Deloraine) or Mrs. Benton/Mrs. Harmon (Melita) during a noon hour to receive assistance to complete the assignment in a timely manner. Staff are available to meet with students who need content specific assistance as well. Diane Soltess Middle Years Workshops – Diane Soltess formerly of Manitoba Education and before that, Numeracy Consultant with St. James SD, worked with all 5-8 teachers in late September and will return to work with the same staff in the spring. She left homework for staff as well. Is curriculum a checklist to complete before year’s end or a framework of big ideas that connect to each other over many years? Diane reminded staff that our curriculum is meant to be taught in a spiral, teachContinued on Page A11

Southwest Horizon School Division Con’t Continued from Page A10 ing math strands in conjunction, as opposed to teaching them independently in units or chapters. Spiral planning allows for continual development. She asked staff to try one of these routines in their classrooms; Number of the Day, Math Riddles, Alike or Different, Number Lines, Guess My Rule, How Do You Know? Diane also stressed the importance of Productive Math talk and provided strategies to promote questions and discussion in math class. Diane worked with staff on the teaching of problem solving. It is important for students to monitor their thinking and reflect on the problemsolving process. Students must be exposed to multiple problem-solving strategies. Students need the opportunity to explore and develop problem solving strategies rather than simply trying to memorize procedures. The Secretary-Treasurer report to the Board included the following: Update – the current year budget summary was reviewed. Accounts Payable were reviewed. Edwards/Oliver: Be it resolved that we approve the following accounts for payment: Payroll: for the month of September: $826,591.64 September 29, 2017 Accounts Payable: 34034 – 34056 $173,318.08 Direct Deposit: 12847 – 12905 $30,679.58 October 6, 2017 Accounts Payable: 34057 – 34088 $57,414.59 Direct Deposit: 12906 – 13009 $256,570.28 Carried Policy and Procedures

Souris Minor Ball held its annual Race Night on Friday, October 27, at the Souris Community Hall. This is the 5th year for the races. The Skating Club started the event and ran it for 3 years and Minor Ball has held it for 2 years. Participants were encouraged to don their best derby gear. This year the night brought in $5808.15. The money will be used to replace the unsafe fence and backstop on diamond #3. The project is already in the works. PHOTO/SUBMITTED

Souris and Area Food Bank is in it’s 11th year of helping those in need. They are open the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, and are located in the lower level of St. Paul’s United Church. This year is averaging 39 households each month who receive hampers. Items commonly used in hampers are cereal, canned meats, soups, canned fruit and vegetables, canned beans, canned tomatoes, tea, coffee, juice, rice, pastas and cake mixes. Drop off points for non-perishable items are St. Paul’s United Church, Bigway or the Post Office. If people wish to make a cash donation they can drop it off at the Town Office for a receipt. The Food Bank is also on Donor’s Choice. Thank you everyone who has contributed to the Food Bank through donations of non-perishable items, cash donations, or volunteering their time to help out. Pictured are volunteers Ed and Elissa Ariss and Theresa O’Brien. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER
