Sweet holidays!
Grade 5 & 6 students at Souris School finished 2017 with a project that was not only fun and interesting, but a little sweet as well! The group, seen here with Souris mayor, Darryl Jackson and their teacher, Jon Filewich built and entire Gingerbread Community that included many local landmarks of Souris while learning about holiday traditions around the world. PHOTO/SUBMITTED
Holidays Around the World Submitted by Jonathan Filewich, B.ED (A.D.) Grade 5/6 Teacher Souris School In celebration of the Holiday season, the Grade 5/6s in Mr. Filewich’s class engaged in a variety of learning activities to help broaden their knowledge and spark their interest of different festivities around the world. One of the main projects the class completed was building a Gingerbread Community, a replica of
our town of Souris. The groups worked hard to plan, prepare, build, and present major landmarks of our town. We then entered our display in a global STEM contest with other classes around the world. We also practiced our research skills by exploring how other countries celebrate the holiday season. The class discussed a wide variety of cultural traditions and students even had the opportunity to choose their own
country to research and present on. Our unit concluded with a day of multicultural celebrations as the students invited special guests, such as the town mayor, to come view all of their hard work. Great work to all of the students involved. We definitely learned and experienced some new and interesting holiday traditions that give us a better appreciation for our multicultural country.

Looking back on 2017 By Darci Semeschuk Happy New Year. Another year has come and gone and we at the Souris Plaindealer and Corner Pocket Publishing hope you can look back on 2017 with fond memories. Each year is filled with happy milestone, accomplishments and for some sad memories. Please enjoy this look back at the highlights of 2017. January, 2017 December snow storms continued into January with an unwanted blast of winter and for the next few months it didn’t quit! Blizzards seemed to be the norm for Southwestern Manitoba. Our first issue of 2017 was filled with snow pictures and that continued throughout the winter. January 13 – “Souris Glenwood pleads for patience. Residents are frustrated with the neverending piles of snow that have accumulated over the past month. Sidewalks are covered under several feet of snow and streets are congested and narrowed due to the pushed piles. One long-time resident, Eugene Kowalchuk believes that this winter rivals the blizzard of 1959 when he first started working at then Diehl’s Funeral Home. “I will never forget that storm,” he remarked. “I think this is just as much snow only we have better equipment now to deal with it so it doesn’t seem as bad.” Classes were cancelled in many school divisions
and highways were closed across much of Southwestern Manitoba once again as another storm pounded the province on January 12. The blowing Snow advisory issued by Environment Canada that created blizzard-like conditions was replaced by an extreme cold warning with wind chills into the -40 to -45 Celcius range into Friday. February, 2017 February opened with a tragedy: Man killed another severely injured in head-on crash - One man is dead following a twovehicle crash this morning on Highway 2 about four-and-a-half kilometres east of Souris. RCMP report that a car heading west towards Souris tried to pass a semi-trailer and collided head-on with a pickup truck going east. The driver and lone occupant of the car, a 20-yearold man from Treherne, died in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt. The driver and lone occupant of the pickup truck, a 57-year-old man from Souris, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Police say visibility was poor at the time of the crash. It wasn’t all doom and gloom in February: Emily Tuttosi of Souris has helped her team win the Canada West conference championship of the University sports season. The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Alberta Pandas 26-5 in the final
game of the series, giving them both the tournament victory in Victoria as well as the overall Canada West women’s rugby sevens series. A standout in the sport of Rugby, Emily graduated from Souris Collegiate in 2013 to pursue a science degree in Calgary. She is now in her fourth year Kinesiology degree. She is the daughter of Trevor and Christie Tuttosi and Lorraine and Richard McKay. March, 2017 March opened with good news from one of the Souris Minor Hockey teams: Souris Atom “A” are League champs The Souris Atom A team defeated Virden on Saturday, February 25 winning 8-3. The win made them the South West Region Atom C Champions. A win for some, a life change for others as March continued: Hanging up the spade after thirty-seven years: 2017 is a milestone year for Gerry Sadler as she is turning the reigns of the business over to her daughter, Crystal, and her son-in-law Chris. Gerry has been getting her hands dirty in the greenhouse for the past thirty-seven years, first at the farm and then later in Souris where they are located today. Rounding our March, an upsetting report of animal cruelty surfaces: Rural residents keeping a close eye on pets and stock after reports of “serial animal killer”: Rural residents are keeping a
short leash on their pets this week after reports of animal cruelty have surfaced causing outrage all over the country. The reports first surfaced on March 27 when Glen Kirby of the online news source, Southwest Post reported that RCMP had found the mutilated bodies of a goat and a miniature horse in a ditch near Minto. Both the animals had their ears sliced off. Tuesday, although it’s not known if the case is related but it does speak to more animal cruelty, a dog from a rural property near Carmen was taken from its yard, stabbed with a screw driver and then dragged to its death behind what is believed to be a smaller SUV or pickup truck. The stories were picked up by CBC and other news sources and since that time, RCMP admit that four other animals have been found mutilated in the same municipality as the goat and the horse. Three coyotes and a racoon have been found, all with their ears sliced off. The news is sparking reports of “serial” animal killer, as reported on MyToba.ca April, 2017 April showers bring May flowers but for Souris, it brought early flooding: High water on Plum Creek and the Souris River inundated Victoria Park flooding one traffic bridge and submerging the public washrooms and the play-
ground. Both the washroom and playground were recently rebuilt with funds from Disaster Assistance after the Flood of 2011. Water levels on the Souris River were high on April 3, covering the entire dam on the east side of Souris. The ice broke up on April 4 and although levels rose, they were down somewhat on April 5. New Pembina Coop opens for business in Souris: The new Pembina Co-op building opened for business with a ribbon cutting and barbecue on April 7 & 8. May 2017 Clean up continues at a home in Souris after fire ravaged it on April 26. Offficers were called to a residential fire on 7th Avenue West in Souris. Officer of the Blue Hills Detachment, Souris Fire Department and the Office of the Fire Commissioner attended the scene. The fire had started on the back deck and investigation revealed that a cigarette was put out into a flower basket that contained peat moss. The blaze quickly spread to the deck and the home itself. Despite the best efforts of fire fighters, the home is a complete loss. An investigator from the Office of the Fire Commissioner determined the fire was accidental and caused $350,000 to the bi-level. WHL select three Souris Minor Hockey players: Landon Roberts,
Cory King, and Tyson Kozak have been selected in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft held May 4 in Calgary. All three young men are products of Souris Minor Hockey and the Southwest Cougar AAA Bantam program. June 2017 A proposed $300,000.00 campground extension that is planned for the Souris Fair Grounds has local residents up in arms over lack of communication from municipal officials. The market demand for campsites in Victoria Park is high due to its location to the pool, town centre, and the natural beauty of the park. This high demand by visitors to Souris limits management’s ability to create more seasonal sites without cannibalizing current overnight use sites. The project, if it moves forward, is expected to be financed through a combination of investments from multiple public and private stakeholder sources and through debt acquisition. Victoria Park’s unique Bailey Bridge has been removed and a new bridge is currently under construction on Plum Creek. The $1.7 project is expected to be completed in fall of 2017. Submitted The Dennis County Development Partnership (DCDP) is a collaboration between the Town of Virden, RM of WallaceWoodworth, and RM of Pipestone. The Partnership is exploring new opportunities to expand the municipalities’ economies with the creation of an Investment Attraction and Economic Development Strategy. The Partnership has retained MDB Insight, an economic development consulting firm to assist with the project.
MDB Insight has worked with Staff, Councillors, and the business community from the three municipalities to explore and identify opportunities to encourage investment and build industry capacity within the area. The consulting firm also explored how the Partnership’s municipalities can leverage strengths and assets for investors and businesses looking to establish southwestern Manitoba. The Partnership held a number of focus groups for residents and the business community in August
2017. Focus group meetings were held in the communities of Kenton, Reston, Elkhorn and Virden. In December the DCDP reviewed and approved the strategy. It will now be presented to Councils and the public at an open meeting on January 17, 2018, 7:00 PM at the Virden Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Everyone is welcome & encouraged to attend. “The DCDP is eager to present the strategic plan to the public, which involves development of the partnership through, various activities and proj-
ects.” Stated Jeff McConnell, Mayor of the Town of Virden. The DCDP anticipates that the activities will elevate our region as a place to do business and strengthen the regional economy. For further information please contact: Rhonda Stewart – Town of Virden info@virden.ca 204-7482440, Garth Mitchell – RM of Wallace-Woodworth info@wallace-woodworth. com 204-748-1239, Michelle Halls – RM of Pipestone accounts@ rmofpipestone.com 204877-3327.
Looking back on 2017 Continued from Page 2 the closure of 23 low callvolume rural stations. Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen said five new strategically placed stations will replace the shuttered stations as the province moves to a goal of 24-7 paramedic coverage. Cassidy Gordon and her horse, cash will join Hartneys’ Jenel Boyes at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyoming July 16 – 22. August 2017 Representatives for the Province of Manitoba have marked three large elm trees on Crescent Avenue for removal. The majestic trees are infected with Dutch Elm Disease and they aren’t the only ones going down. The final numbers aren’t in yet but according to a municipal representative, quite a few trees on the western side of Souris will meet the same fate. Residents can expect to see the affected trees removed in 2018. Super mail boxes, or, as Canada Post refers to them as, group mail boxes are now being used in
Carroll, Manitoba since the former post office was closed by the corporation. An early morning picture of an accident scene on Highway 2 showing a tangled wreck posted to 94 Star FM’s Facebook page was quickly removed. The driver of the pickup truck in the photo is in serious condition after a collision west of Souris Thursday morning. Early investigation by RCMP shows a pickup truck veered across the centre line of Highway 2 and struck a semi truck. The collision occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. August 10. After the patient was initially treated at Souris Health Centre, he was transported by Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, a spokesperson with the air ambulance said. September 2017 After being idle for so long, the former Beresford Church, located between Souris and Brandon, or Beresford Church Studio as it is now called after its extensive renova-
tions will soon be a music hub for students and musicians alike. Musician and music producers, Jody Weger is putting the final touches on the studio and will be offering any type of string instrument lesson that students may be interested in taking beginning in late September. Crescent Avenue refurbishment is on the table for the council of Souris Glenwood. Government officials were in Souris August 25 to officially announce a $1 million grant for the project. The estimated $1.5 million project which will see the replacement of century old water and sewer lines under Crescent Avenue is a three-way cost shared initiative between the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments. It is projected to begin in 2018. LT’s Corner Store in Souris held their grand opening on September 8. Funds raised at the event were donated to the Souris Health Auxiliary’s portable ultra sound fund. The ultrasound, which is the size of a desktop computer and is able to pro-
vide doctors with detailed internal imaging of a patient’s body, will cost in excess of $25,000.00. Loretta and Lon Turner, of LT’s Corner Store raised $575.00 towards the project. Riders taking part in the National Kids cancer Ride stopped in Souris on September 12 for a bit of much needed rest and a delicious barbecue donated by the RM of SourisGlenwood. In addition to the lunch, both the municipality and the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce made donations to the cause. October 2017 On October 15, at approximately 3:15 p.m., Blue Hills RCMP received a report of a child in a water holding tank in the RM of Whitehead, Manitoba. When police arrived on scene, the child was being removed from the water tank by the fire department. The 14-yearold girl, later identified as Jordyn Simonson was transported to local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. According to RCMP, Jordyn was walking in a

farmyard, with supervision, when she stepped on the lid of the water holding tank, knocking it off and falling in. There was water at the bottom of the tank, approximately 20 feet down. November 2017 Kappa Chapter Beta Sigma Phi held their tenth annual Kappa Kristmas on November 4. Although the turn out was lower than expected, the event went off without a hitch. Now that ten years have gone by, the Kappa Chapter has decided that it’s time to come up with a new plan. They say that this year will be the last for Kappa Kristmas. ‘Bridging the gap’ on the Souris Swinging Bridge Members of the Souris community were concerned with damage that occurred to the Swinging Bridge sometime over the weekend. A large portion of the wire mesh that lines the sides of the bridge was torn out leaving a gaping hole. Residents reported the incident on Facebook to warn residents to watch their kids and pets as the breach was approximately
eight feet long and could result in a bad fall for those unaware of it. December 2017 Souris School’s Make Change and Social Justice Fighters collected over 12,000 plastic shopping bags during the Bag Up Manitoba campaign. They earned a Trex bench and bird feeder for their efforts Council for the RM of Whitehead is looking at changes to the existing ward Boundaries that have been in place since 1883. The Manitoba Government has named Whitehead as one of the municipalities that’s required to review those boundaries in order to account for population distribution shifts. Two new columbaria have been erected in the Souris Glenwood Cemetery. They are used for the respectful storage of cinerary urns and can be purchased for use now or in the future from the Municipality of Souris Glenwood. The Souris Fire Department has received a $10,000 donation from Enbridge.

SEXTING seminar Senior’s for parents at Organized Services Souris School Submitted by Souris School Increase in online sexual exploitation prompts SEXTING talks for parents Attention Parents… Constable Gord Olson (Royal Canadian Mounted Police - RCMP Internet Child Exploitation (ICE Unit) will be here at the school for a special parent evening presentation in January. The presentation explores the definition of the media coined phenomenon “SEXTING” and takes the audience through a scenario. The scenario will expose what sexting is, the impacts and offer options to prevent the risks associated to sexting behaviors as well as how to reduce the harm of actions already undertaken. The history of the presentation’s development is in response to noticeable and concerning increase in reports of Self/Peer online sexual exploitation. We have recognized that the issue required more than investigation and enforcement and that the victimization needed to be prevented through education and awareness. It is not just about Sexting though. The presentation also covers the following: • sending intimate images out to anyone (people they know or do not know in person) - we run them through a texting/
messaging scenario and give them some statistics about the commonality of this • talk about the consequences of using social media • talk about the emotional impact of using social media as well • we give them strategies and websites to access if the need mental health help or social media concern help • discuss privacy on social media • we talk about online presence now compared to when they get older and closer to graduating and the consequences of what personal stuff you have put out there- we discuss different social media apps and being safe on the them and the internet • we discuss the criminal aspect as well of social media and the consequences of bullying someone online Constable Olson will present to Middle and Senior Years students on January 17 during the day. She will be lovingly remembered by three sisters and two brothers; three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, plus numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Erwin, and her parents, Pete and Anna Harder. Ruth was born on September 6, 1957, in Manitou, MB, and grew up in Haskett, Elm Creek, Altona and Gretna. She enjoyed taking care of others and spent most of her life doing this, whether it was her younger brothers and sisters or working with children as an Educational Assistant. Ruth was a quiet person who enjoyed quiet times with her family and friends and helping others. She preferred to be in the background doing what needed to be done. Times are changing, the demographics on the farm and in the industry, are changing. We had a lot fun reminiscing about the past at the 40th Anniversary and now we are excited to celebrate the future! Explained Brad Crammond, Manitoba Ag Days Board Chair. To kick off the celebration we are encouraging all young farmers to stop by our selfie station, take a picture and post it on social media with the hash tag #agdaysyf. Everyone who takes part will receive a Manitoba Ag Days retro hat (while supplies last) and will have the opportunity to be enter into the draw for an ALLINCLUSIVE CUBAN FARM TOUR courtesy of Reit Syd Equipment in Dauphin and John Deere Canada! “Twenty years ago, opinions were that there would not be any young farm operators or owners. It is impressive and inspiring to see so many young farmers taking over farm operations all while tak-
ing Manitoba’s agriculture output to record levels. We are extremely excited to support and participate in celebrating The Year of the Young Farmer at the 41st Manitoba Ag Days!” Stated Don Tarrant, General Manager Reit-Syd Equipment. What can you expect throughout the show? Tuesday there are various events taking place with young farmers in mind. There will be a young farmer luncheon with the Hon. Ralph Eichler, Minister of Agriculture attending and both the University of Manitoba and Assiniboine Community College Agriculture students will be visiting the show. New for this year, the three young farmer organizations in Manitoba will be hosting a young farmer lounge. “We are excited to announce that the Outstanding Young Farmers, Keystone Agriculture Producers and Canadian Young Farmers Forum have worked together to provide a space where people can relax for a few minutes, have some snacks and network with others all day Tuesday. There will be lots of information available and personnel around to answer questions,” stated Andrea Guthrie, Media
Coordinator Manitoba Ag Days. Young Farmers will be celebrated in many aspects throughout the three days of the show. The speaker line-up is full of young farmers speaking
on various topics in both the MNP and FCC theatres. Be sure to review the speaker line-up online or look in your mailbox for the show guide this week. “Our Youth are Our

Caitlin Bossert chipped in with six points and five rebounds. In the consolation final the ladies faced the hosts from Steinbach. It was a great game with both teams holding slim leads throughout.
