Passing the torch

After 35 years of dedicated service to the staff and students at Souris School, secretary Connie Moffatt has retired. Connie had her final day last week. Everyone who knew her will miss her smiling face and wealth of knowledge. Connie has passed the torch to new secretary, Jessica Arbuckle who, in her own right, will bring a ray of sunshine to the school. Pictured (L-R): Jessica Arbuckle and Belinda West, who also shares secretary duties, along with her other roles at the school, stand behind a seated Connie Moffatt. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK

submitted The staff and students of Souris School would like to congratulate and thank Mrs. Connie Moffatt for the 35+ years of dedicated service to our school community. Mrs. Moffatt has gone above and beyond her duties to help make our school a great place for children to grow, mature, make some mistakes, grow some more and ultimately become productive members of our community and of society. Her calm demeanour, as well as her knowledge of all things Souris, will be greatly missed. News from Mr. Williams: The leaves on the trees

have turned colours quite rapidly this past couple of weeks. Fall has definitely arrived. It has been a great year for the harvest, except for the past two weeks. Hopefully the warm weather will stay for a few days so that the remainder of the crop can be harvested. I would like to thank our organizers and participants for the Terry Fox Run that occurred yesterday. It turned out to be a great day and we had over 450 participants in total. At this time, we do not have a total of monies raised. Thank you to the local Conservation Districts for organizing the annual Water Festival in Elgin for our Grade 5-6 students. The students and staff had a great time. Thank you to the parent volunteers who went along as chaperones. I would also like to thank Mrs. West for organizing the Post-Secondary Day at Souris School on Wednes-

day for Souris, Hartney, and Wawanesa students. Once again, it went off without a hitch. Important reminder to students and parents: ▪ Morning exercises begin at Souris School at 8:55 a.m. Students are expected to be in their first class prior to that time. ▪ There is a warning bell at 8:50 a.m. Students should begin to move to their classrooms when they hear that bell. Presently we have a number of students who are walking in the doors while the national anthem is playing or while announcements are being read. Time management is one the most important “soft skills” that a person can develop. “Soft skills” is a term relating to a collection of personal, positive attributes and competencies that enhance your relationships, job performance, and value to the employment

market. We thank you for your anticipated support and cooperation regarding this issue. Football, Rugby 7’s and Volleyball are all in full swing now. I would like to thank the numerous volunteer coaches and managers that provide our students with these great opportunities. “Bag Up, Souris School” - Social Justice Fighters This October we will again be collecting plastic bags in an effort to divert them from our landfills. This is a reminder to keep saving your bags so they can be brought in to school in October. These bags will then be counted, picked up at school by the Gardewine Group, and shipped by Safeway Canada to Trex for recycling. Spread the word to family and friends and let’s continue to save those bags

for October! “Bag Up” for the environment” Band Boosters The Souris Band Boosters and band students will again be selling Bothwell’s well known cheeses. If you were not able to be home, live rural, and do not know a band student, cheese forms can be picked up at Souris

River Chiropractic. Orders will need to be in to the school by October 12 and pick up day is October 26, 3:15 - 7:00 p.m. Thank for supporting our Souris Band program. October 9 - no classes Thanksgiving; October 12 picture day; October 20 – no classes PD day.

Students take part in Terry Fox Run

Souris School students took part in the annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 26. All students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 took part in the annual cancer fundraiser. These young students are on the last leg of the run before heading in for some well deserved water!

by Reena Nerbas Hi Reena, I have a black gas stove (that I really love) but would like to find something that cleans the black stovetop without using harsh scrubbers or chemicals because I am afraid to damage the surface. It would be nice to also do this without streaks! Any ideas? Thanks so much. Brenda Dear Brenda Using a good quality micro fibre cloth, wipe your stovetop after each use when it has cooled. Clean burners with dish soap and a plastic scouring pad. Stubborn cooked-on spills can be cleaned with a mild abrasive cleanser that you can make yourself by combining 50/50 borax and baking soda. If the spills are difficult to remove, allow the baking soda and borax combination time to sit on the food stained area before scrubbing it with a plastic scouring pad. Wash removable burner grates in a sink full of warm, soapy dish water with a plastic scouring pad. Rinse all parts with warm clear water and dry. Be careful to avoid the gas ports on your burners. If they are plugged use a toothpick to clean the ports, or brush gently with a soft-

leslie.chudley @century21.ca

bristled brush. For pilot-less stoves, check the port and area below the igniter wire and clean it as well. Debris left under the igniter can keep the gas burner from lighting. To remove streaks, combine 50/50 vinegar and water and wipe stovetop. Dear Reena, Can you please tell me how to prevent bananas from turning brown when making Banana Cream Pie? Maureen Dear Maureen, Black bananas take a tantalizing dessert from a treat to a travesty and I have been the baker of the latter. I learnt (the hard way) to begin with newly ripe bananas. Toss banana pieces in a bit of lemon juice. Completely cover bananas with cream, and slice bananas just before serving. Lastly, instead of cutting bananas into individual slices, consider slicing each banana lengthwise once down the middle before placing them into the pie crust, less oxidizing equals less chance of black bananas. Speaking of Bananas… • During this time of year, fruit flies are out in full force. I store bananas in the plastic bags that you find at the grocery store. I twist the bag so that no air gets in or out. They sit on the counter and don’t turn black any faster than if they were without the bag. Fruit flies breed in fruit, drains and plants and this gives the flies one less place to breed.

Submitted by Reena Nerbas • I always pull bananas apart after bringing them home from the store, I find they don’t ripen as quickly. Submitted by Marilyn Feedback from caring reader Re: weed killers I read your recent piece on this subject and you provided a sure-fire recipe for a DIY herbicide which included table salt. You omitted the important caveat on using this mixture near or in your gardens or anywhere you hope to grow anything again in your lifetime. I know you know that the salt effects not only the vegetation but insects and microbes in the soil rendering it unable to support plant growth for many years. You may want readers to restrict it to pathways, areas between pavers, etc. i.e. areas where you never want anything to grow ever. I enjoy your column. Keep it up.
