Heading back to class
Approximately 450 of the 200,000 Manitoba students heading back to class are making their way through the doors at Souris School. Principal Guy Williams was on hand to greet the students as they walked, were delivered by school bus, or dropped off by parents on September 6. In addition to Principal Williams, teachers, secretaries and support staff welcomed the students back for a new school year. National Kids Cancer Ride coming to Souris and Reston by Darci Semeschuk The National Kids Cancer Ride is one of the biggest and most ambitious charity cycling events on behalf of childhood cancer in the world. Now in it’s 10th year the 2017 event will be an emotional and inspirational adventure beginning in Vancouver on
September 6 and complete in Halifax 18 memorable days later on September 23, 2017. Riding in relay style, the selected national riders will each cycle approximately 150 kms and 220 kms per day joined along the way by thousands of other caring cyclists who will cycle short-
er “stage ride” distances in major cities across Canada. At the start and end of each day they will participate in community events and visit many of Canada’s 17 pediatric oncology centres and hospitals where the cancer community will share inspiring stories of strength and hope
with cyclists and the media. Together, the cyclists will raise millions of dollars on behalf of charities that improve the quality of life for children, and their families, living with and beyond cancer. The traditional National Kids Cancer Ride format consists of 36 rid-
ers on two teams, cycling across Canada in 18 days. Beginning the journey in Vancouver, these riders will travel up to 310 kilometres in a single day, averaging 220 kilometres a day. Team 2 will pass through Reston and stop at the Rec Centre at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Septem-

Approximately 20 to 25% of canola harvest is complete with 40+ bu/ acre yields reported. Flax fields continue to dry down with little evidence of any significant disease. Soybeans are now in the R6 to R6.5 stage. Dry and hot weather is speeding up maturity. Sunflowers are in the R6-R7 stage. Corn is R4-R5 stage. Pastures are drying up and producers will be looking to put cows out on fall pastures or harvested crop land shortly. Second cut of hay is mostly complete and yields look to be average. Several producers cutting slough hay and yields are above average. Dugouts are about 50% full.

Solutions & Substitutions by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I am very fed up with my dishwasher. After running a cycle, the bottom and insides of the cups are caked with baked on food. The cutlery ends up with food hardened onto each piece. The dishwasher was expensive and it is only two years old. What can I do to fix this problem? Albert
and gently heat the line with a warm iron to help it expand back to shape.
Dear Albert, New dishwashers are made to be water efficient and use less energy, because of this, some dishwashers don’t clean as well as they once did. Appliances use less water and basins tends to clog up, requiring regular cleaning; because the debris in the bottom of the dishwasher prevents the water from circulating properly. Either hire a handy person or take the dishwasher apart on your own. Begin by unsnapping and removing dishwasher racks. Remove the top sprayer arm. Remove the lower spray arm, this is a little trickier because you will need to unscrew all the screws and some of them might be hidden. After the dishwasher basin is disassembled, you will see all kinds of debris such as: toothpicks, chicken bones, pieces of garlic etc. Clean and reassemble the dishwasher. Hopefully with regular maintenance, your dishwasher will run well from now on.
Dear Rowanda, This Italian phrase means, “to the tooth” and refers to the cooking time. In other words, the pasta should be cooked so that it remains slightly firm and chewy instead of soft.
Dear Rena, I read your hints in the newspaper every weekend and use many of the solutions. I moved our fridge to clean underneath and notice that there is a dented line on the flooring. Is there anything that can be done to lessen the dent? Thanks. Miriam Dear Miriam, Your best bet is to either heat the area with a hair dryer, the vinyl will soften and puff up. Or lay a tea towel over the dent
Dear Reena, I am new to the world of cooking and have a question for the simplest dish - pasta. What does it mean when the instructions on the package say to cook the noodles, “al dente”? Rowanda

Feedback that will make you smile Re: Matching socks Hi, I laughed and laughed at your “match your feet” article! Having a husband and 3 boys, matching socks was always a chore as some would go missing every wash! My solution: don’t wear matching socks! It has led to many interesting conversations with total strangers informing me my socks don’t match! And the making of new friends. I feel the “matching” trend was started by a very good salesman as there is no reason socks have to match! If my family wanted their socks to match, THEY were the ones to make them match, not ME. So, don’t stress anymore, step outside the box and don’t ever match again. It’s a truly freeing experience! Elaine Best tips of the week • Prevent your eyes from tearing while chopping onions by holding a stainless-steel spoon between your teeth during the process. Submitted by Brittany • If you run out of toothpaste, cut the bottom off the tube, insert toothbrush up the tube from the bottom. You’ll be surprised how much toothpaste is still in that tube - enough to last several more days!

Manitoba Open Farm Day Page 8, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, September 08, 2017
hosted by Manitoba Association of Agricultural Societies Plan to bring your family, your friends, your neighbours and attend the eighth Manitoba Open Farm Day on Sunday September 17. There are 46 host sites across the province from Roblin to Tolstoi. Open Farm Day is a
unique opportunity for urban and rural Manitobans to improve their knowledge, understanding and increase their appreciation of our very vibrant agriculture industry. The many opportunities to experience and increase their agriculture awareness includes choosing to participate in one of the many agri-tourism venues
– from pumpkin patches, corn mazes or experiencing riding a horse. You can take a tour through a value added industry – a brewery. There is also the opportunity to visit one of four dairy farms, see vegetable gardens, beef farms, honey farms, fruit orchard, a honey farm or a grain farm. Additionally, there is
the option to browse in one of 5 agriculture museums across the province or take a walking tour with Keystone Agriculture Producers (KAP) of downtown Winnipeg and learn how agriculture organizations/ businesses in years gone by played a significant role in our provincial capital. Other activities can include a stroll through the greenhouses and vegetable plots at Assiniboine Community College north campus in Brandon, a tour of the Bruce Campbell Discovery Centre to learn where our food comes from and how it gets from the farm to your fork or to
see and engage with producers and the local Conservation Districts on their unique partnerships in addressing environmental and water issues as well as increasing the awareness of the impact of forage and grasslands upon our environment. Come and visit one or a number of farms – to see a sneak preview of different sites – check out the Manitoba Open Farm Day Facebook page and then go to www.openfarmday.ca to plan your day, find out information on host sites, directions to sites, the hours open and the various events and activities taking
place on Sunday September 17. You may also consider staying overnight in the area to experience a full day in rural Manitoba. For locations, fees, and bookings visit www.bedandbreakfast.mb.ca Open Farm Day is hosted by Manitoba Association of Agricultural Societies (MAAS), with funding support from Government of Canada, Growing Forward 2 and Manitoba Agriculture. For more information contact: Wendy Bulloch, MAAS Open Farm Day Coordinator, 204.761.3705, info@ openfarmday.ca
