Elgin Museum looking for information on quilts submitted We, at the Elgin Museum, are once again asking for your stories, this time about quilts, quilting bees, and so on. We have recently received two wonderful quilts, both of historical interest, and are making these, along with those already in our collection, the focus of our 2017 museum
display. But we need your help! Each quilt, now as then, holds a story. Of how it was made, of the people who made it, of the events which lay behind it. Quilting was once an important social activity, primarily of a community’s ladies. A time when friends and neighbours could get together, exchange stories and laugh or
cry or commiserate one with the other, display their artistic talents and ‘feel’ for colour and pattern …. And we want to know all of this. A quilt by itself is a lovely but incomplete thing. It is the stories the quilt holds that make it special. And that’s what we want to tell, with your help. So please, if you have stories
you can share with us, or even a quilt (or picture of such) that you would be willing to share for the summer, please contact Alexis MacLean (204-769-2311), Box 14, Elgin, MB, R0K 0T0, maddcat@mynetset.ca) or Marg Robbins (204-769-2147), Box 156, Elgin, MB, R0K 0T0. Share your memories of those special quilts

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, Please end this torment. I am troubled with a laundry room odour that I can’t successfully eliminate and it emanates from my washer. I tried running vinegar through the machine as well as filling the drum and surrounding tub with a bleach/ water solution and letting it sit for several days. No luck. My research promotes the ideas that the outside of the drum is the problem or fetid water that doesn’t properly drain. I’m wondering if the hoses could be the culprit. I hesitate to replace the hoses if they aren’t the problem. The machine is an older model top loader that has given me excellent service for many years. There are just two of us in the household so we only use the washer for one load per week. When the machine is idle, the lid always remains open. Even with the smell, the clothes come out clean. No other water source in the house has this difficulty. Could the drain pipe on the wall be guilty? Any suggestions you have would be appreciated very much. The laundry room is on the main floor and getting harder to ignore. Thank you. Sharon Dear Sharon, This is a common challenge with washing machines, often the doors to the machines are tightly sealed and moisture has no chance of escaping between uses. Thus, mold forms under the seal and within the mechanics of the machine. It is true that you should keep the door open when the machine is not in use so that moisture can escape. You can continue to run 1-cup of vinegar and half cup baking soda through the machine once a week to kill odors. Also, stop (if you are) using liquid fabric softeners, these tend to build-up in the machine and produce mold. As well, lift the seal and clean underneath with a paste of 3% hydrogen peroxide and borax or toothpaste and an old toothbrush, you will be amazed at the build-up. Another favorite product for getting rid of the smell of musty machines is washing soda; you can find this in the laundry department of grocery stores. It is called, “So Clean” by Arm and Hammer. This product is amazing at whitening and brightening fabrics, as a matter of fact, I like to add one-quarter cup to each load of laundry when I wash whites (it contains no bleaches or phosphates). Both borax and washing soda are great for zapping odors. Also, take out your detergent drawer and clean any mildew with 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and water. If the problem remains, then like you said there may be a more serious problem such as a clogged hose or faulty or worn out machine parts. This requires snaking the machine and using hot water and chemicals to free any clogs. Dear Reena, We have a deep fryer that works great but the outside of the fryer is marked up with oil dripping that will not come off.
What solution do you recommend for this problem? Best regards, Larry Dear Larry, You can either purchase a branded degreaser to clean the exterior of your deep fryer. Or smother the outside with a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Leave for 15 minutes and scrub with an abrasive, non-scratching pad. Rinse and wipe dry. Some people have great results by cleaning the outside of the fryer with oven cleaner, test on an inconspicuous area first. Dear Reena, I have a problem that I haven’t seen in your column. My kitchen has inexpensive white peel-and-stick tiles installed by the previous owner. Unfortunately, some of the tiles have turned yellow. Do you know of any way to get them white again? The best solution would be a new floor but that doesn’t fit into my budget at this time. Thanks. Cheryl
Dear Cheryl, Many people have found pouring 3% hydrogen peroxide onto the floor every day for three days is helpful. Other people had great success by combining one quarter cup OxyClean with 1 gallon boiling water and pouring the solution onto the area. Another solution is Clorox but some say that this application removes the floors finish and shine. Lastly, mineral spirits are a treatment that people have told me worked for them. If the floor remains yellow, replacing the tiles is your best option. Dear Reena, What is the difference between linguine and fettuccine? What kind of sauce would you use on linguine? Thanks. Janet Dear Janet, Fettuccine is wider and flat, while linguine is more like spaghetti but square instead of round. Each pasta shape is designed to hold the sauce differently. The name linguine actually comes from the Italian language meaning, “little tongues”.
This pasta pairs well with seafood i.e. clam, shrimp, etc. sauces because of its flat shape, the sauce stays on the noodle easily. From white sauces to tomato or wine sauces linguine is a versatile noodle and can be substituted for spaghetti noodles. For simpler meals, linguine noodles can also be paired with butter, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Zesty Tips of the Week: • Need to liven up a fruit salad? Combine orange juice with sour cream, add grated orange rind. Pour over fruit salad. • Help lemons last longer. Sprinkle lemons with water and place them in a plastic bag, they will last one month or longer. • Sprinkle lemon juice onto freshly cut fruit so that it does not darken. Note: Every user assumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. Test all products on an inconspicuous area first. Part 3 - Trip of a Lifetime
Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, June 09, 2017
Editor’s note: This is the third and final article in the three part series, “Trip of a Lifetime” submitted by former Faith Community Baptist pastor, Don Oddie describing his trip to the Israel and your of the Land of the Bible. The Plaindealer thanks Mr.Oddie for giving us the opportunity to share his story with you, our readers. Monday, January 23 – Day 8 Our day began at 7:30 a.m. as we headed for the Jordan River, and the sight of where John the Baptist is thought to have baptized Jesus. Here too, is where the people of Israel crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land about 1400 BC. Also where Elijah is thought to have been taken up in the fiery chariot, an important historical site. It got up to 27° today, so shorts and T-shirt! We travelled south along the Jordan River, paralleling the electronic wire fence between Israel and Jordan (it is almost entirely wire. Only about 3 km is concrete between Bethlehem and Jerusalem.) Our first stop was Qumran, the place of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947. Excavation here continues to support the biblical story. Our next stop was Ein Gedi, which means ‘Spring of the Wild Goats.’ Today it is a national nature preserve but biblically it is the place where David ran to hide from King Saul, who was trying to kill him. An oasis in the desert where God protected the future King of Israel. By noon we were at Masada, the famous fortress atop a giant butte in the desert, built by Herod in 37 – 31 BC. On the east side facing the Dead Sea, the sheer drop is 450 metres. On the west, it is somewhat less, but still imposing. The Jewish revolt in 66 AD led to the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD, and the group of rebels, zealots, and Essenes fled to Masada. From there they continued to harass the Roman troops until they were finally overcome, all of them choosing suicide to slavery. You can walk to the top via the ‘snake path,’ but we rode the huge gondola and arrived at the top in less than two minutes. And again, God overcame another fear of mine, a strong fear of heights, but one that never materialized. Our day ended with a dip in the Dead Sea. With its fifty
per cent mineral content, you can’t sink! Imagine, January 23 standing in the Dead Sea in a bathing suit! Tuesday, January 24 – Day 9 Our last day and night in Israel. We travelled through West Jerusalem and ate about a half hour we were in Bethlehem. Our Israeli guide was unable to accompany us there, ‘politics,’ and we took on a Palestinian Christian guide for this part of our tour. At our first stop, a gift shop (where I saw $35,000 hand carved nativity scene that would fill a living room, also one marked at $25,000.00!), we were told that Bethlehem used to be ninetyfour per cent Christian, but today it is about six per cent. Various sources have slightly different numbers, but the message is the same: in the birthplace of Jesus, both Jews and Christian are being forced out today. We went first to the church of the nativity, still used by Armenian, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic Christians, each group holding two masses a day there. They are extensive renovations going on and, in a basement grotto, a large silver star on the floor marks where we were told is the traditional birthplace of Jesus. On the Roman Catholic side, we visited the site where St. Jerome translated the Bible into Latin. We then headed for the ‘Shepherd’s Fields,’ the traditional location where the angel spoke to the shepherds the night of Jesus’ birth. There is a church on the location that is fully funded by Canadian money. We also visited a cave, which was thought to be about 2,000 years old, perhaps even where those same shep-

Our Israeli guide rejoined us in Jerusalem and we visited the Friends of Zion Museum that honours Gentiles who have devoted themselves to helping the Jewish people settle in their homeland. One of these was in G. Douglas Young, the founder of Bridges for Peace. The day ended with a visit to the Garden Tomb and the ‘place of the skull,’ which is at the end of Mount Mariah. This is the alternate site of Jesus is crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. We ended our tour with communion in this place, while two other groups were doing the same thing in that very large garden, a fitting end to the ‘trip of a lifetime’ as we celebrated together the reason for our being, as Christians. Members of the RCMP were on hand on Thursday, June 1, to present appreciation certificates to some local people for all their efforts put forth during the blizzard that affected much of south western Manitoba and beyond in March. Many lives were in danger but due to the bravery of many people in our area everyone was able to get back home safe and sound. Brian Parham, Fire Chief, and the Souris Fire Department with members Andy Morden, Sheldon Kowalchuk, Bruce Swaenepoel, Jim Swaenepoel, Trevor Cowieson and Kevin Parham were on hand to accept the award for the Department. Municipality representatives were Sande Denbow, Charlotte Parham, and Andrew Hamilton.
