The Western Canadian Devloo canola crusher takes second place The annual Inventor’s Showcase at Ag. Days in Brandon features new inventions and new products that will assist in farm operations. This year’s showcase featured 17 new inventions and 17 new products. Taking second place was the Devloo Canola Crusher, invented by Gerry Devloo of Somerset, to improve the process of testing canola for green seeds with a timesaving more
convenient method. The unit is portable, weighs 12lbs. and measures 7 by 10 by 14 inches. • • • The Gazette 70th year of service One of Glenboro’s very active seniors has reached another milestone in her mid-nineties. Just as impressive was the one she reached in her mideighties when she was awarded the Resident of Distinction Award for Glenboro in 2007. Ellen Rawlings, who celebrated her 95th birthday last May,
was a charter member of the Glenboro Memorial Hospital Aid (now known as the Glenboro Health Auxiliary) when it was formed in 1947. When the new hospital was built in 1955 Ellen was one of the women who took on the responsibility of equipping the new facility with all the necessary supplies. • • • Crossroads this Week Literacy rates soar at Wayway Students at Waywayseecappo School have shown a dramatic improvement in their literacy rates. Six years ago only three percent were reading at grade level. As of June 2016,
that number had climbed to 47 percent. It’s just the kind of results educators were hoping for when a partnership was struck between Waywayseecappo First Nation and Park West School Division six years ago. Additional funding resulted in smaller class sizes and for the hiring of additional education assistants. • • • Crossroads this Week Ukrainian heritage celebrated in 2016 2016 was a significant year for the area, as it marked the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement. A Manitoba Provincial Proclamation, dated March 10, 2016 documents 125 years since the first
arrival of Ukrainians to Canada, to Rossburn and its locale. These stalwart people initially opened homesteads, developed multiple settlements, labored in agriculture and forestry, built schools and sent their children on to the higher levels of learning. • • • Crossroads this Week Shooting in the RM of Whitemouth leads to charges A 20-year-old male from the RM of Whitemouth is recovering from gunshot wounds and a 19-yearold male from that area is facing charges, following a shooting incident on January 23. Lac du Bonnet RCMP received a report of
a shooting at a residence in the municipality at 2:20 a.m. The 20-year-old was transported to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in stable condition. • • • Carberry News-Express Bomber training to take place over CFB Shilo Military training will take place on the CFB Shilo range and training area. This training exercise will include large aircraft bombing and occur daily. The 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery is conducting regular training of its soldiers with support from the United States Air Force and private jet-training contractors.
Senior’s Organized Services by Mary Ann Carlisle S.O.S. (Senior’s Organized Services) is located in Victoria Park Lodge 1353rd St. South, Souris. Our office hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Phone 204-483-3106. Well, hello all. It is a fairly nice winter day today and I know some people think we keep repeating things in this column but it is so you can cut it out and keep it on your fridge to know what is going on with S.O.S. at Victoria Park Lodge. If you have any good news, please put it in the paper, as our paper seems to get smaller each week. People say there is nothing to read, well, what have you put in it for others to read? Let’s put something in our town paper each week, so we don’t lose it. You might think you have nothing to put it, but I’ll bet you do, just try - something funny that has happened in your life, some ideas of ways to do things better, whatever you feel you might like to read if someone else put it in. Maybe you enjoy driving and wouldn’t mind taking someone to a doctor appointment or just out for an outing. Give us a call or drop by the office and we will get you registered, and the fun begins. S.O.S. can help take care of your surroundings. If you don’t feel up to doing all the work yourself anymore, we have workers ready for hire to help you with daily, weekly, or monthly chores inside or outside, all seasons, too. A very important tip: Please have your driveways and sidewalks all cleared off from snow as soon as you can and be sure to clear both front and back entrances too! If an ambulance or fire department ever had to come,
they need to be able to get to you quickly, and walking through deep snow is not quick or easy. Speaking of cleaning off your driveways and entrances, I think we need to maybe have more of our businesses clearing their sidewalks. This past week has been very bad, especially for those with power chairs and walkers to try and get from one business to another, thank you. Things to do with us at Victoria Park Lodge: Monday and Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. - Fun chair exercises; Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. - Fun Bingo; Friday, 1:30 p.m. - Fun games; Cory entertaining on the piano and sing-a-longs, too, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. At Crescent Manor on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. come join us for Chair Exercises. Come join in the fun! S.O.S. will hook up the Victoria Lifeline Service,
which will get you help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with just the push of a button. Cancer care drivers are also available to get you to and from your cancer treatments. Call the office and we will do the rest for you (booking your rides, etc.) as long as you give us the dates and times of the appointments. Our drivers are confidential and reliable. We hope you never need this service but it is available through S.O.S. if you do. We are also in need of more cancer care drivers. Please call us if you can assist. Congregate Meals are served five days a week at Crescent Manor at 5:00 p.m. If you would like to enjoy a delicious home cooked meal and good company, call 204-4833990 and book yourself in, you’ll be glad you did. You can purchase some take
home meals, as well. It’s a great time to visit and eat with others. The Handi-Van will get you to and from your in/or out of town appointments. If the Van is booked we will do our best to get you one of our reliable and friendly drivers. We have many things going on from the S.O.S office, give us a call and we
will fill you in. We love to hear from you and if you have any ideas of things you would like us to try and do, by all means let us know! We have many services but if there are others that you think could be of help, please let us know! Words to learn from: Mother Teresa will be remembered as the tiny nun with love and compassion
in her eyes as she held tiny babies in her arms and who worked until the end of her life helping the poorest people in India. I particularly like these thoughtful words of hers: “Everybody has something good inside them. Some hide it, some neglect it, but it is there!” That’s all for this week. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.

Page 4, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, February 10, 2017 Every Wednesday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 7:50 a.m., an ambitious group of kids lace up their skates and hit the ice for some skill development and a little bit of fun. Ice instructors Glen Tosh and Chris Page teach the kids different drills to help improve their skating and some stick handling skills. After their ice session, they enjoy a delicious breakfast which consists of anything from French toast to scrambled eggs, milk and juice, prepared and set up by Lisa and David Edmunds, before they head to school. This program is free thanks to the generosity of two organizations in Souris. The ice is paid for by the Souris Senior Elks and breakfast is paid for by the Souris and Area Foundation. Instructor Glen Tosh says they have had anywhere between 10 - 28 kids attend and the ages range from 5 to 15 years. The program runs until the end of February and anyone is welcome to join anytime.
Solutions & Substitutions by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I can’t seem to bring that shine back to my stainless steel pots. Even though I scrub them, the bottom has a cover on it that only seems clean when wet not dry. Bonnie Hi Bonnie, Here are a few tricks to brighten a stainless steel pot: Soak tomato juice, sauce, puree, ketchup, any tomato acid base in the pot. Add a little water and boil for 5 minutes. Or boil rhubarb leaves in water to bring shine back to old pots, the oxalic acid found in rhubarb cleaner is a strong cleaner. Or scrub pots with an S.O.S pad, water and Bar Keepers Friend to rejuvenate pots. Dear Reena, What solutions can you recommend to clean cast iron grills on a gas cooktop? Also, please share tips on how to clean my oven without using the self-cleaning feature? Evelyn Dear Evelyn, To clean cast iron grills on a gas cooktop check your manufacturer’s manual for the recommended cleaning procedure. I myself either scrub them with an S.O.S pad and dish soap and water or clean them in the dishwasher. While many people advise against full submersion, I
CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY
have never found a problem with my own grills. For that once a year really intense spring cleaning many people opt to clean their grates with ammonia. Place grate into a plastic bag, add ¼ - ½ cup household ammonia depending on the size of the grate. Seal bag and leave for 8 hours. Remove grates from bag, scrub with water and an S.O.S. pad. For people who do not own a self-cleaning oven, the oven mess does not need to become a dreaded chore. The world’s easiest way to clean an oven is to sprinkle the bottom of the oven with baking soda. Pour white vinegar over the baking soda, let bubble and soak for 30 minutes. Wipe and rinse with water. In the meantime, put an old towel on the bottom of your bathtub, fill it with hot water and 1-cup of washing soda. Let oven racks soak overnight and in the morning (while wearing gloves) rinse the racks and wipe with vinegar. Clean as a whistle! Note: Do not leave water in the tub if small children live in the home. Feedback from wonderful readers Re: Removing iron on clothing labels off of everyday garments Hi Reena, We had the same problem as your reader and I found using a damp/wet tea towel with the iron worked. It was over four years ago and we started to peel the label

when it was warm/hot. We removed labels from a variety of fabrics like, sweaters, linens, polyester and rain jackets. Hope this will help. Pat Fantastic Tip of the Week • Next time you sit on a piece of chewing gum. Place your pants into the freezer for a couple of hours, peel gum off. Remember to remove your pants before placing them in the freezer (hee hee). Delicious crunchy homemade croutons The star of any great salad is the toppings and nothing says ‘yum’ more than homemade, easy to prepare croutons. Tear stale pieces of bread into pieces. Into a frying pan heat about 2 tbsp. olive oil. Add 3 whole cloves garlic. Cook for 5 minutes. Remove and discard garlic. Add bread pieces into the oil and cook for about 5 mins. or until golden brown. Slightly cool before adding croutons to the salad, to avoid wilting leaves. Note: Every user assumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. Test all products on an inconspicuous area first. Hierck. Tom’s belief that ‘every student is a success story waiting to be told’ will provide the basis for a discussion about what we mean when we say “all means all”. Administrators have been engaged in a book study of one of Tom’s books called, “Starting A Movement; Building a Culture from the Inside Out in Professional Learning Communities”. We are looking forward to learning more through collaborating with Tom in person. The Secretary-Treasurer’s report to the Board included the following: The Financial Statement – was presented. One area of our budget that has a variance in spending verses the budget allocated for the year is for grounds maintenance. This is due to the fact that we were mowing grass up until November and have been clearing far more snow than usual. Current projections are approximately $20,000 more than budget allocation. Modular Classroom Request – Four modular classrooms are being requested for Wawanesa School due to the following reasons: • Our classrooms are close to capacity and enrollment projections show that student numbers will continue to grow. • We require more space to comply with the 20 K-3 smaller class size initiative (90% of Kindergarten to Grade 3 classrooms within a School Sivision will be required to have 20 of fewer students). • The chool did have two older portables available for use in the past.
