Kappa Kristmas wraps up by Darci Semeschuk Kappa Chapter Beta Sigma Phi held their 10th Kappa Kristmas last week and despite lower than hoped attendance, the evening was a success. “We were happy with the evening,” explained Kappa member Roxy Kowalchuk. “We would have like to see more people out but there was other things going on in town. It’s good when a small town is busy!”

Now that 10 years have gone by, the Kappa Chapter has decided that it’s time to come up with a new plan. They say that this year will be the last for Kappa Kristmas. That doesn’t mean you won’t be seeing anything from the group. According to Roxy Kowalchuk, they are regrouping and will come up with a new idea for the future. The past 10 years has seen much good work done by the Kappa Chap-

ter. Their Kappa Kristmas has made it possible for them to give back approximately $10,000. to the community. “Through community support and vendor support, we have been able to contribute to many organizations in the past ten years,” stated Kowalchuk. “I believe it’s about $10,000.” Some of those organizations who have benefitted from the Kappa Chapter event include: Souris & Glenwood

Golf Course; Souris School playground; Souris Outdoor Rink; Souris & District Arts Council; Railway Museum; Victoria Park Swimming Pool; Town Beautification; Avalon Theatre; Skate Park; Children’s Wish Foundation; Souris & Glenwood Library; Hillcrest Museum; Heritage Club; Souris Valley Recreation; Christmas Cheer; Souris Minor Ball; Palliative Care; Souris & Glenwood Foundation.

Gordon’s Opinion

by Gordon McDowell Gordon McDowell was born in Killarney and educated in Killarney and Hartney. After graduation, he headed to Ontario and then Alberta where he and his wife ran foster homes and established a woman’s shelter. Now retired, he has moved back to Souris and shares his knowledge and experience through opinion pieces in newspapers. I write this as debates are going on regarding changes to the health care of many Canadians. I also realize that many of our decision makers at all levels of government are too young to know this information. You will see why instead of addressing cuts in areas to the people, our provincial politicians need to be talking to Ottawa about living up to what was promised to the parents of the 1950’s & 1960’ This is a short essay of a partial history explaining some of the reasons the people of Canada find life a constant struggle in our modern times. I was born the year that saw the end of WWII. Most of what is told here is because I, and my generation have lived through it, and some is through research, which anyone can easily do these days. I believe that it is the duty of my generation to pass on this information to our children and grandchildren, as life today has become busier than it was for us and they are too busy trying to meet the needs of their families. Most people believe that taxes are a curse that is necessary, while not realizing that a National Railroad and the St. Lawrence Seaway were built without taxes on the people. The Income Tax came into being as a way to pay for WWII, and was to be discontinued when it was paid for. In 1950 the Lord Nelson Hotel of Halifax believed that it should have been achieved. They launched a lawsuit against the Attorney-General of Nova Scotia and Canada involving the transfer of powers from the Provincial to the Federal Government, and this was directly related to the Income Tax Act. On October 3, 1950 a seven judge unanimous decision of the Supreme Court of Canada handed down their decision. They ruled that power transfers cannot legally take place. The Federal Government was given until 1962 to remove itself from such power-transfer agreements, including the Income tax business and to scrap the Income Tax Act. This gave the government 11 years to facilitate changes so that they could retain their cash cow without disclosing to the people either what they were doing, nor why. It began in 1951, when the Louis St. Laurent government eliminated the term “dominion” to describe Canada. However, that is another story, which I won’t delve into at this time. Rather than eliminate the Income tax, the government came up with a plan (undisclosed openly) proposed to my parent’s generation, to close all of the small 1 & 2 room country schools, and amalgamate them into larger schools in the larger communities, and bus the students. This would allow the hiring of the best teachers and the opportunity for a better and broader range of programs. The Federal & Provincial government would split the cost 50/50. In the ensuing years this is where the promise to our parents was broken. Today the cost sharing is Federal 13% and Provincial 87%. The provinces have therefore had to increase provincial taxes for their taxpayers, including pushing some of the costs onto the counties and municipalities. In 1964 Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) were started so that the government could administer the Canada Pension Plan and the various employment insurance programs. However in 1967, Revenue Canada began using SINs for tax reporting purposes. Thus anyone working is expected to have a SIN in order for their employer to issue them a paycheque. In 1964, a royal commission recommended a national health care system, modelled on the Saskatchewan plan. In 1968 the Medical Care Act was passed providing universal health insurance to all Canadians. Doctors were not paid a salary. Instead they were to work on a fee for service basis, and billing the Canadian government. Once again, our parent’s generation agreed to this since the federal government was agreeing to pay 50% of the cost. Just like education, today they are paying 13% or less, while the provinces are left with 87% and passing some of that onto the counties and municipalities, who have both had to increase their taxes. Our provincial governments should be looking for increased funding from the federal government rather than providing less services and looking for increased funding from their people. The elephant in the room is, why have the federal and provincial governments continued with the power sharing, after the Supreme Court has declared it illegal. They have reneged on the deal made with our parents, while at the same time telling Canadians that they don’t have money for the things that people want, including shorter wait times for many health care needs. This has left them with a disproportionate share of what they probably consider disposable income.

Movember in Canada celebrates 10 years by Brandi Pollock I mustache you a question, have you ever heard of Movember? If not you are in luck; I am going to fill your brain with knowledge on the subject. The first Movember event dates back to 2004. The hair growing event took a little longer, but eventually, become a staple of the Canadian landscape in 2007. Movember has made a massive impact on the way men’s health is treated and talked about. While many other cancers are openly talked about in the media and in hospital boardrooms, the embarrassing stigma surrounding prostate and testicular cancer has kept the desperate need for research and medical advancements under wraps. A scary statistic shows that 45 men die from prostate cancer every hour, while the most common cancer in men under 40 is

testicular cancer. Men’s cancer is more common than you think, many professional athletes have come forward in the last few years urging people to get checked due to their own diagnosis. This includes cyclist Lance Armstrong and Pittsburgh Penguins forward Phil Kessel.

Participating in Movember means raising funds for men’s health and is as simple as growing facial hair. The rules are; you register at www. ca.movember.com, and let your muzzy grow during the month of November while collecting pledges to your online Movember

webpage. The goal of Movember is to reduce the number of premature deaths among men 25 percent, and the organization is well on their way. Last year alone, over 15.5 million dollars was raised. This Movember get participating either by donating or growing that beard! Help make a difference.

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I have two large dogs that I often take on road trips. Both dogs shed profusely. What can I use to rid the car seats of fur? I vacuumed the upholstery, which made very little difference. Any advice would be mega appreciated. Peter Dear Peter, Here is a trick that detailers often use in their quest to detail vehicles. Using a spray bottle filled with water, lightly spray the upholstery. Use a squeegee and pull it towards you. The fur drawn out of the upholstery will amaze you. Dear Reena, When I drive, I like to take hot, filled coffee mugs with me. Over time, the liquid spilt out of the mug, on more than one occasion, and dried inside the cup holders. Any idea as to how I can clean the cup holders? Scott Dear Scott, A little dish soap and water will clean the holders. Dry the holders with a soft cloth. Extra Tip: To prevent future spills, place silicone muffin cups inside drink holders to protect the car from suffering through anymore nasty, dried on spills. Remove the silicone muffin liners occasionally, and wash them, in the sink. Dear Reena, When blueberries are out of season, I use frozen berries, for baking instead. How can I prevent blueberries from sinking to the bottom of muffins, when I make homemade muffins? Also, how can I ensure that the muffins I bake, are light and fluffy? It doesn’t matter which recipe I use; the muffins are heavier than I would like. Samara Dear Samara, Place the berries in a bowl, and coat them with a quarter cup of the dry ingredients called for in the recipe. The flour will prevent the berries from sinking, and reduce the amount of bleeding in the batter. The perfect muffin, has a lightly, brown edge with a speckled appearance. The inside is moist; the top should not have a peak as this is caused by over mixing. In other words, the easiest solution for creating fluffy muffins is not to over mix the batter; over mixing the batter will “wake up” the gluten and make the muffins tough. The easiest trick for not over mixing, is to spoon mix the batter, instead of using an electric mixer. Smart Secrets Revealed • Freeze your eyeliner for 15 minutes. Before applying it to your face, this prevents the liner from crumbling. Submitted by: Kyra • I save old toothbrushes and use them to detail my car. by Darci Semeschuk It was a slow start for the Souris Sabre High School hockey team as they dropped their first two games of the season. However, the Sabres look to bounce back as they will have two home games November 18 and 19 as they play host to McCreary and Hamiota respectively. Game times are 4:30 p.m. The Westman High School Hockey League grew a lot and as a result

will have a different look to it this season. There are now 19 teams in the league with the additions of Swan River, McCreary, Roblin, Sandy Bay and Rivers-Elton. Reston is now on its own instead of forming a single team with Souris. The league will feature three divisions instead of one this season, with the defending champion Vincent Massey Vikings in the west along with Virden, Hamiota,

Rivers-Elton, Reston, Souris and Deloraine-Hartney. Crocus Plains is in the east with Glenboro-Carberry-Baldur, Neepawa, Minnedosa, Boissevain and Killarney-Wawanesa. The north features Swan River, Dauphin, McCreary, Roblin, Major Pratt (Russell) and Sandy Bay. Each team will play teams inside their division twice and teams outside of their division once to make up a 24-game schedule.

the snow, so fresh and white and clean, but oh how I hate the ice (except in a skating rink.) I’ve had my first and hopefully last fall for this winter already. I went out the back door to go to my van and only two steps and I was down, ouch, ouch, ouch, but alas, I am ok, sore but ok for sure, it could have been much, much worse, can’t believe how fast it all happened, so my ad-

vice is get some grippers for your shoes or boots, and tread carefully. It is cold already, but the nice clean white snow makes up for that a bit. If you can get outside breathe in the clean fresh air! When cleaning out your extras, if you find wool and/or some craft materials we would love to have them at the SOS office and we will be sure to get them to someone

Former EDO wins Rising Star award from EDAM

Former Souris EDO, Vern May is seen here accepting the Economic Developers Association of Manitoba’s first ever Rising Star Award. May is now the Portage Regional Economic Development Executive Director. PHOTO/FACEBOOK

by Darci Semeschuk When Vern May left his job as Souris Glenwood Community Development Officer for a more prominent role in Minnedosa, many people felt Souris’ loss was Minnedosa’s gain. That appears to be true as far as the Economic Developers Association of Manitoba (EDAM) is concerned. The EDAM held its semiannual conference last week in Portage, and the first annual awards evening took place November 2. One of the award recipients was Vern May. May, now Portage Regional Economic Development Executive Director, was awarded the first ever EDAM Rising Star Award which is presented to developers in practice for less than five years who’ve made an impact. “I am both over-

whelmed and humbled by my peers in the Economic Developers Association of Manitoba (EDAM) this evening for the endorsement of the association as the first Rising Star Award recipient at the Fall Forum Dinner and Awards Gala,” stated May in his acceptance speech. “I am reminded that even when it feels like we are working in isolation, someone is always watching. Thank you.” May’s name is etched on the bottom of the award but he acknowledges that it was not his doing alone that garnered the attention of the association. “It is truly the result of strong collaborations and great relationships with a Board and Council that understand that the mandate needs to align with the resources availed to complete the mission,”

he explained. “I am deeply honoured to have been selected the Rising Star Award winner by the Economic Developers Association of Manitoba.” May made the jump from Minnedosa to Portage more than a year ago and he says it was possibly the best personal and professional move he has made in the last ten years. He is looking forward to a long career in Portage.
