Souris boys drafted into the WHL

by Darci Semeschuk The Western Hockey League completed the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft on May 4 in Calgary. In total, 230 players were drafted over 14 rounds of selections, including 126 forwards, 83 defensemen, and 21 goaltenders. Alberta led all provinces with 73 players selected, followed by BC with 62 players, Saskatchewan with 41 players and Manitoba with 25 players. Additionally, 29 American-born players were selected. Of those 25 Manitobans, Souris was well represented with three names of the Southwest Cougar AAA Bantam team in the top six rounds. For the three young athletes, the day was exciting but they had to wait for details as they were on the ice in tryouts for Team Manitoba U16 when their names were called. Cory King, son of Clark and Denise King, went 5th round, 98th overall to the Moose Jaw Warriors. Fifteen-year-old King was one of nine players selected by the Warriors. He posted 15 goals and 49 points in 35 games with Southwest Cougars in the Winnipeg Bantam AAA Hockey League. King is excited to see where this will lead him in his hockey career. “I was very happy to see that Moose Jaw drafted me, it’s pretty close to home,” stated King. “I’ll be heading to camp and hopefully play as a 16-year-old.” The Portland Winterhawks selected centre Tyson Kozak, son of Michelle Kozak and Trevor Kozak from Souris, in the 6th round, 121st overall, making him the third Manitoban selected by the Hawks. Fourteen-year-old

Landon Roberts (L), Cory King (M), and Tyson Kozak (R) have been selected in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft held May 4 in Calgary. All three young men are products of Souris Minor Hockey and the Southwest Cougar AAA Bantam program. They will take part in the WHL later this year. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK Kozak recorded 57 points in 36 games this season with the Southwest Cougars Bantam AAA team. “This could bring me a lot of opportunity,” remarked Kozak. “I’m not sure what to expect when I get to Portland but it’s about as far away as you can get in the WHL. I’m looking forward to this opportunity.” The Tri-City Americans drafted 11 players in this year’s draft featuring 2002 birth year players. Included in those 11 was

centre/left wing Landon Roberts, son of Cheryl and Vance Roberts from Souris, in the 6th round, 129th overall. Fourteenyear-old Roberts posted 52 points in 31 games with the Southwest Cougars Bantam AAA, registering 81 penalty minutes. “I’ve always enjoyed the game but I really didn’t think about where it would lead me,” said Roberts when asked if he had planned a future in hockey. “I guess in my Minor Bantam year is when I first thought I

could get drafted. Now I just want to work hard and see where this goes.” The Southwest Cougar AAA Bantam manager, Clark King, is thrilled with the draft results as all three boys worked hard to be recognized. “I think it’s awesome that three kids from Souris were drafted,” stated King. “It was their hard work and commitment as well as their high skill that caught the attention of the scouts. They earned this.” All three players have

worked out with Outperforme Athletics in Souris at some point. They will continue working hard and training as they prepare for their respective camps. For now all three remain on the U16 Team Manitoba roster. There are currently 40 players out of the original 100 that began the quest for Team Manitoba on that list. Within two weeks that roster will be whittled to 22 when the final list is drawn up. If they are fortunate to make the U16 squad, they will

Blood Clinic Petition submitted Maguire pledges to keep the pressure on Canadian Blood Services OTTAWA - Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, submitted a petition to Canadian Blood Services with over 1700 names calling on them to reverse their decision to close the Brandon clinic. Maguire hoped to get 1,000 signatures from Westman residents to show how serious the region is about keeping the clinic open. Much to his surprise, the petition garnered over 1,000 signatures in less than 24 hours. The online petition and those signing at Maguire’s constituency office has now reached 1708 signatures. Maguire is still encouraging those who want to keep the clinic open to contact the Canadian Blood Services directly at feedback@blood.ca and to CC his personal email account at Larry.Maguire@parl.gc.ca Maguire said, “West-

man residents are serious about keeping our blood clinic open. There isn’t a day that goes by that someone hasn’t raised this issue with me. This petition shows that there is a large and active support base for the clinic to remain open and the mobile clinic to visit rural communities.” Since the impending closure was announced, Maguire has met with representatives from the Canadian Blood Services in his Parliamentary office to stress the need for the Brandon clinic to remain open and for rural mobile clinics to continue to be made available. In that meeting he reiterated his position that they should reverse their decision to permanently close the clinic and layoff the staff. Maguire concluded, “I will always stand up in Ottawa for issues that are im-

portant to Westman. I believe we must continue to advocate for the reversal of

the decision on the blood clinic in Brandon and ensure that it remains open.”

One of Canada’s most accomplished hockey coaches will receive an honourary degree from Brandon University (BU) this month. Andy Murray will be conferred with an honourary Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) at Brandon University’s Spring Convocation on Friday, May 26, at the BU Healthy Living Centre. Currently the coach of the Western Michigan University (WMU) Broncos men’s hockey team, Murray previously coached in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was inducted into to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. Also a member of the Brandon University Dick and Verda McDonald Sports Wall of Fame, Murray played for the BU hockey and football teams and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. He later coached the Bobcats hockey team for three years. Born in Gladstone and raised in Souris, Murray continues to return to his home province to share his experience and expertise with amateur coaches as Hockey Manitoba’s Honourary Mentor Coach. “Mr. Murray’s success throughout his impressive career reflects his ability to foster effective teamwork, a lesson that is applicable to us all whether in athletics, academics or in the community,” said Dr. Gervan Fearon, president and vicechancellor of BU. “His influence extends beyond his on-ice triumphs with his willingness to offer guidance and inspiration to others helping to instill leadership, collaboration and other important skills in new generations. These are values Brandon University stands for as well.” Murray began coaching at age 25 with the Brandon Travelers senior hockey team before assuming the role of Bobcats head coach in 1978. He led the team to two league championships, including the 1980-81 season when the Bobcats were ranked No. 1 in Canada, before leaving for Europe to begin his professional coaching career. Murray earned his first NHL head coaching job with the Los Angeles Kings in 1999, setting a new franchise record with 215 victories over six seasons before joining the St. Louis Blues for four more years. Murray is the only head coach to guide Cana-

Andy Murray da’s national men’s team to gold medals in three IIHF World Championships, and has won a record six titles in the Spengler Cup tournament in Switzerland. He was an associate coach for Canada’s 1998 Olympic hockey team. Murray joined WMU in 2011, leading the Broncos to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s Conference Championship in 2012. He won this season’s Herb Brooks Award as the Coach of the Year in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Brandon University bestows individuals with an honourary degree based on significant service to the university community or society; excellence in professional life or public service; or advancement of knowledge through research or teaching. Nominations from Brandon University and the westman area are considered. Brandon University, founded in 1899, promotes excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship, and educates students so that they can make a meaningful difference as engaged citizens and leaders.

Mr. Neil Zalluski, manager of the Assiniboine Hills Conservation District, attended the meeting and provided Council with a list of projects completed in the District in 2015-2016. The current priority will be areas that may have spring flooding. The RM of Whitehead has been presented with a proposal to join the Conservation District. A letter was received from Keystone Agricultural Producers of Manitoba (KAP) in regards to concerns with the increased taxes for farmland due to the reassessment. The letter is requesting that municipalities consider options to reduce the taxes for farmland. These options would lower the tax revenue from farmland but would not reduce the mill rate to cover the costs of the municipality. The following motions were passed: • That the agenda be adopted as presented. • That the minutes of the regular meeting of Council held March 14 be adopted as circulated. • That the regular Council meeting be recessed and that Council proceed with the Public Hearing to deal with the Conditional Use

Order Application No. 2017-01 – SE 4-8-21W. No written submissions “for or against” were received. Notification was given as required by The Planning Act, of the Hearing and of their right to make presentation. The Conditional Use Application was reviewed by the Board. Neighbouring property owners Jim and Donna Mason and Marcel and Cynthia Delaurier attended the hearing. Questions in regards to the development of the property included agricultural uses were answered. • That the Public Hearing does now adjourn and Council continue with the regular meeting. • To authorize the approval of the application of Darren and Fiona Wright, Conditional Use Application Order No. 2017-01 a) To authorize the location of non-farm dwellings within a “AR” Agricultural Restricted Zone as required for proposed subdivision application file # 4449-16-7695 – Location: SE 04 – 08 – 21 W SP Lot 8, Plan 2327 BLTO • That the Council for the Municipality of SourisGlenwood approve for payment of accounts to

Fire claims life

by Darci Semeschuk RCMP officially determined there was no criminality in the fatal house fire that occurred early Thursday morning that claimed the life of 62-year-old Garth Denbow, a retired railroad engineer. Firefighters located the body in the residence as they were fighting the blaze. Nobody else was in the home. Sometime after 6:30 a.m. Thursday,

May 4, local fire personnel arrived at Denbow’s home on Maffan School Road, about three kilometres north of the southernmost junction of Highway 2 and Highway 21. Crews pulled Denbow from the home but he could not be revived. According to RCMP, the home sustained extensive damage with estimates at over $200,000. Investigators say a faulty wiring in the basement caused the fire.

Southwest Cougars

by Grant Moffatt The Southwest Cougars of the Manitoba AAA Midget League will see the coaching staff return for the 2017-2018 season. Dennis McNish will return for his second full season with assistants Dan Averill and Derek Moar returning for the season. The Cougars will be looking to return to the ice with the fall camp beginning on September 8 in Souris. The Cougars will host a preseason tournament the weekend of September 22- 24. The AAA League will see the addition of a third Winnipeg team beginning in the fall bringing the league to 13 teams with a 48 game schedule. The Winnipeg Bruins will join the Wild and Thrashers and play out of the northeastern part of the city. The rural teams have advocated more teams in Winnipeg for years and the Winnipeg AAA Council gave its blessing for a third team much to everyone’s surprise. The addition of a third team in the city will make the AAA program available to another 20 skaters and will put pressure on the Interlake and Central Plains Regions who have been able to fill roster spots with players released from the Winnipeg Region. Souris Health Auxiliary – A year in review Page 8, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, May 12, 2017

submitted by Sheila Hollyoake 2016 was a busy year for the Auxiliary. Long time president Florence Phillips and long serving secretary Gail O’Greysik stepped down. May I extend my thanks to these hard-working and caring individuals who led the way for many years. Our new secretary is Pat Baludic and I am going to try to fill the shoes of president. Our returning treasurer is Eleanor Hayes. The Auxiliary meets the last Monday of the month in the Multipurpose Room at the Souris Personal Care Home (PCH) at 2:00 p.m. with the exception of De-

cember, July, and August. New members and ideas are always welcome. For more information contact myself at 204-483-3010 or Pat at 204-483-3579. The Auxiliary hosted the community blood donor clinics. As most have heard the final blood donor clinic slated for Souris is May 16 at the Community Hall from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Blood Services will no longer be coming out to the rural areas but will have a mobile clinic in Brandon twice a month. If you have not already made an appointment, please do so to show that there is still an interest in our rural ar-

eas. We also hosted two birthday parties at the Souris PCH, delivered Meals on Wheels, and made visits to the ailing. We participated in the Souris Donor’s Choice and were recipients of the communities donations. Our members supplied magazines for the Personal Care Home residents and this year we added magazines and crosswords to the hospital side. Many thanks to Whitfield Drugs for their

donation of books. A $200 donation was made to the Step 2 program and this year we had two $500 winners of our annual scholarship for graduating students entering the medical field. We donated an additional seven bed side tables to the Health Centre. Our annual Strawberry Tea and Bake Sale in June was well attended and we made over 200 deliveries to local businesses. Thank you for all your support and those who helped out.

SOS arranges Handi-van services

Senior’s Organized Services, SOS, assists local seniors with many different aspects of their lives. One of them is arranging Handi-van rides. Volunteers like Linda Ryckman (pictured above) are tried and true drivers for those occasions. SOS also arranges monthly trips to Brandon. The next scheduled trip in May 17 and you can call the SOS office to arrange a booking. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK

Lifetime members recognized were Minnie Smith, Hazel Webster, and Hazel Andrews. We were pleased to have two of our doctors meet with us and after input from them, we decided that we would like to donate a much needed portable ultrasound unit for the Souris Health Centre. Thank you for your time and input. This year’s TV is on June 14 at the Fel-

lowship Centre from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and we are focussing on raising money for a portable ultrasound unit for the Souris Health Centre. All are welcome to attend or we can deliver to your place of business. “Our mission is to add to the comfort and welfare of the Souris Health Centre patients and Souris Personal Care Home residents and to promote health education in the community.”

Testing the political waters

Grant Jackson from Souris got to sit in the opposition benches in the House of Commons with Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris. Jackson is doing a four-month internship in Maguire’s Parliamentary office in Ottawa as part of the Conservative Party’s Annual Youth Internship Program. During his internship, he will be helping with parliamentary duties while assisting constituents on legislative concerns and issues. PHOTO/SUBMITTED
