These players include Shaylee Scraba, Tori Williams, Cory King, Tyson Kozak, and Landon Roberts. Shaylee Scraba is a second year Bantam playing forward with the Westman Wildcats Midget AAA team. Shaylee was named to the Female Team Manitoba U16. The team competed at the Central Plains Midget AAA Tournament held in Portage September 22 – 24 to wrap up the first year of Female U16 Program of Excellence. Shaylee says she plans to continue working hard and training to improve her skills in order to garner the attention of Team Mani-
toba next year. Tori Williams, a third year Midget playing defense with Westman Wildcats Midget AAA has made Female Team Manitoba U18. The 2017 Program of Excellence U18 Team Manitoba roster sees a split of 11 players from the various sports schools and nine from the Midget AAA league (MFMHL). The roster for Team Manitoba was determined through a selection process which included a Spring Camp (68 athletes), a Top-40 Camp (40 athletes) and concluded with a Summer Prep Camp and the Bison Exhibition Series (27 athletes). The U18 Women’s National Championship is taking place November 1 - 5 in Quebec City, Quebec. This tournament includes eight provincial and regional teams, including Alberta, Atlantic, British Colum-
bia, Manitoba, Ontario Blue, Ontario Red, Quebec and Saskatchewan. Hockey Manitoba recently announced the final roster for Men’s U16 Team Manitoba that will be competing at the 2017 WHL Cup in Calgary. The roster, comprised of 20 players, features some of the best Manitoba talent born in 2003. The selection process began with player scouting throughout the 2016-17 Bantam season followed by U16 Program of Excellence (POE) camps held in April, May, and August, then finishing with a final evaluation exhibition game in late September. U16 Team Manitoba will travel October 15 - 22 to compete at the 2017 WHL Cup which includes a pre-tournament exhibition game against the centralized pre-Olympic roster for the National Women’s Team. Cory
King, Tyson Kozak, and Landon Roberts are three local players named to the U16 team. Cory King is currently a defenseman with the Southwest Cougars. He was drafted by Moose Jaw in the WHL and Swan Valley in the MJHL. Tyson Kozak is a forward currently playing with the Southwest Cougars. He was drafted by Portland in the WHL and Dauphin in the MJHL. Landon Roberts, just back from knee surgery on his MCL, is a forward currently playing with the Southwest Cougars. He was drafted by Tri-City in the WHL and Steinbach in the MJHL. Congratulations to all these Souris products who are making a name for themselves in the hockey world.

Swing in Souris Page 4, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, October 13, 2017
submitted On Friday, September 29, The Mark Humphries Orchestra delighted an enthusiastic audience with tunes of yesteryear – right from the 1920s to the 1980s. There was a wide variety of selections, but the music of the big bands prevailed, with “In the Mood” and “Chatanooga Choo-Choo” brightening up the faces of those in attendance. And even though no one took to the dance floor, toes tapped and people clapped as many songs familiar to the crowd revitalized the memories from years past. Mark introduced each number with a bit of relevant history, making each piece more meaningful for everyone. With his typical British humour, he also introduced each of the 18 members of the orchestra, many of them graduates or students from the Brandon School of Music, many of them music teachers, as well as a physiotherapist, a computer geek, a furniture salesman, farmer’s wives, and even Kent McConnell who recently retired from Ted Good Music. It was wonderful to see and hear these 12 men and 6 women, all with various musical backgrounds, careers, and interests, come together to make beautiful music, thoroughly enjoying what they were doing. And in the process, the crowd gathered were the benefactors of two hours of superb entertainment.
The first performance for this season for the Souris District Arts Council was The Mark Humphries Orchestra, 18 top-notch musicians playing swing music in the ‘big band style’, a real joy for the almost 150 people in attendan ce. PHOTO/SUBMITTED
Pumpkin carving contest at Memorial Complex by Darci Semeschuk The newly hired Souris Community Complex manager, Greg Manning, wants all kids to know that they are invited to participate in a pumpkin carving contest at the Complex on October 19. “We’re just going to have a little fun with the kids in the community,” explained Manning. “There will be
some other things going on so the Complex will be busy but we’ll have our contest set up in the entranceway. It should be a lot of fun.” Manning says that there will be a small fee for kids to take part in the event and once complete, a prize will be awarded for the best pumpkin. The contest will begin at 3:00 p.m. and wind up at 8:00
p.m. It’s designed to be a come and go event and once the pumpkins are carved and photographs are taken, the kids can leave with their creations. Other action at the Complex that day will be gymnastics, hockey and Barley’s hockey. Bring your kids to the Complex and take part in this fun and unique event.

Souris RCMP Highlighted calls for service in Souris RCMP area were as follows: October 2 • Report of a smashed car window, turned out to be a rock propelled from a lawnmower. October 4 • Police responded to a very loud argument in a Souris apartment. No assault, just an argument. The couple was warned to keep the noise down. On the same day, a report of an attempted fraud was received. The fraudster claimed to be from Reader’s Digest. The lucky couple had won $1.5M, but needed to get a money-gram to pay a fee to get the briefcase full of cash. They weren’t fooled and reported to Police, who reported it to The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Don’t fall prey to this scam! Tell your friends, too! This busy day also included a well-being check on a local resident. The female was located and safe. That wasn’t quite enough for that day, as a report of another fraud was received. The person was selling a gun on Kijiji. They were then instructed to moneygram a large sum of cash to the USA to complete the transaction and then another sum was requested. Police are investigating.
October 5 • Nobody told us that it was Scam Week! A report of a scam was yet again reported. Unknown persons phoned the male through a social media account, advising that someone has placed a “hit” on the person’s life. “Pay a sum of money within a day and you won’t be killed.” This is a scam! Police also responded to keep the peace at the hospital on that day. October 6 • A complaint from an adult male was called into the detachment. He stated that his mother had stolen his keys so he couldn’t leave the rural property. Police later discovered that the vehicle was in his mother’s name, so no crime had been committed. Friday FYI: “Rolling stops” are still illegal in Manitoba. Coming to a complete and full stop is still the expected behaviour at all stop signs and when entering a roadway where there is no signage. Accident victim says he’s “a very lucky man”
Page 7, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, October 13, 2017
by Darci Semeschuk It was early morning on August 10 when a pickup truck veered across the centre line of Highway 2 and struck a semi truck. RCMP described the crash, three kilometres west of Souris, as a “highway speed head-on collision.” After the patient, Robert Simard was initially treated at Souris Health Centre; he was transported by Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Robert Simard has undergone weeks of therapy and released the following statement on his Facebook page: Well it’s been a few months since my accident and I just wanted to take this moment to thank all my family, friends, first responders at the scene, STARS Ambulance, Health Science Centre, Souris Hospital, Brandon Regional Health Authority, Manitoba Public Insurance, occupational therapists and

many more people with helping me get through this little hurtle in my life. But most of all thank you to my lovely wife and beautiful girls, you guys are making my recovery so easy on me. Simard wanted to share his story (this is a partial accounting of that statement) and give some advise to all drivers: “August 10, 2017 I was involved in a head on collision with a Semi, I fell asleep at the wheel driving approximately 100 km/h and wandered into the oncoming lane just outside of Souris. I was driving home from a night shift and was only four miles away from home. I remember waking up to pieces of the windshield hitting my face followed by air bags. From there the Jaws of Life were used and approximately 40 minutes later I was pulled from the truck and flown to HSC by Stars. After a short flight of 45 minute,s I arrived at Health Science Centre were I was taken care of by a great
team of nurses, doctors, and surgeons. I believe I’m a very lucky man to still be here to share my story, if you ask me I’ve came out pretty lucky, broken left Femur, broken left ankle, broken left elbow, fracture sternum, lacerated spleen and so on, and yes, I’m left handed!

How to identify and stop cyberbullying
Children, adolescents and young adults can be the victims of a pervasive type of abuse called cyberbullying The global organization DoSomething.org says nearly half of kids have been bullied online, with one in four saying it has happened more than once. Cyberbullying has grown as access to computers and devices that offer an online connection has grown. Today’s students have many new things to contend with as they navigate the school year. As a greater number of schools transition to providing lessons, homework and tests on digital devices, students spend much more time online. This connectivity can have many positive results. However, the same availability also opens up students of all ages to various dangers. One of these dangers is a more invasive form of bullying called “cyberbullying”. The global organization DoSomething.org says nearly half of kids have been bullied online, with one in four saying it has happened more than once. Cyberbullying has grown as access to computers and devices that offer an online connection has grown. Bullying is now just as likely to occur online as it is on the playground. Cyberbullies may bully classmates through email, social media, instant messaging, and other social applications. Since cyberbullying tends to target emotions and mental well-being, and reaches beyond the school campus into a student’s home, its impact can be even more serious. According to the Megan Meier Foundation, which campaigns against bullying, peer victimization during adolescence is associated with higher rates of depression, suicide ideation and suicide attempts. In the United States, suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 15 and 24, according to data compiled from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Cyberbullying occurs in many different forms. Here are some types of cyberbullying educators and parents can look for if they suspect their students or children are being bullied: • Flaming: This is a type of bullying that occurs in an online forum or group conversation. It’s achieved by sending angry or insulting messages directly to the person. Flaming is similar to harassment but harassment usually involves privately sent messages. • Outing: This type of bullying is a sharing of personal and private information about a person publicly. When information has been disseminated throughout the internet, one has been “outed”. • Fraping: Fraping occurs when someone logs into another’s social media account and impersonates him or her. This could be a child or an adult impersonating the person and posting inappropriate content in his or her name. Sometimes this type of bullying is also called “posing” or “catfishing”. • Masquerading: Masquerading occurs when bullies create fake profiles so they can harass someone anonymously. The bully is likely someone the person being targeted knows well. • Exclusion: Sometimes direct targeting is not necessary. Students can be bullied simply by being deliberately left out, such as not being invited to parties or encouraged to participate online conversations. Securing privacy online is one way to prevent cyberbullying attacks. Students also can be selective about who they share personal information with or whose social media friendships they accept. Thinking before posting and paying attention to language and tone can help curb cyberbullying as well. Students should stick together and report instances of cyberbullying if it becomes an issue. 17102GMP 17102GMQ

Fortunately both he and the semi truck driver survived but Simard's recovery has been long. You can read the full account of his progress on his Facebook page. PHOTOS/FACEBOOK
