New Pembina Co-op opens for business in Souris

The long awaited new Pembina Co-op building opened for business last week with a ribbon cutting and barbecue on April 7 and 8. The building is three times larger than their previous location and with 15 full- time staff members, Pembina Co-op will offer more selection to their customers. Multi-instrumentalist Comedian to Souris submitted When word was recently received that The Beetles could not perform in Souris this month due to illness of one of the performers, the members of Souris District Arts Council put their heads together to determine whom they could bring to Souris for their final concert in this season’s performance series. The name that came to the top of the list was Mark Humphries, whom some

had seen perform with his big band in Virden and Reston. Mark Humphries originates from Yorkshire, England. His father toured the world as a multi-instrumental comedic entertainer under the name of Dick Van Winkle. Growing up in a musical family, comedy and swing music began at the age of thirteen when his trumpet teacher allowed him to sit in with a local swing band called Sounds

40. Years later, this eventually led him to performing with the UK’s premier Big Band, The Syd Lawrence Orchestra. The gift of music and comedy opened many doors. Musical directing, as well as producing musical shows, is his second passions. During the early 1990’s he would sometimes produce and direct up to seven shows a year. During a show rehearsal he met his wife, Jill, at

her family farm and riding school. After happily marrying Jill, Mark joined their family business and together they developed the farm into a zoo and college site. The Mark Humphries Orchestra was formed back in 1987 and toured the UK, until Jill and Mark decided to emigrate to Canada in 2008 with their family. The music and equipment was brought along out of sentiment, and was not expected to be used again.

Alongside his wife, he now owns Westwood Ranch Garden Centre in Elkhorn, Manitoba, with a collection of exotic animals for people to visit with. Today in his one-man show, he proudly recreates parts of his father’s variety act with his own, leaving audiences with their chuckle muscles exercised. He also fronts the Canadian version of the Mark Humphries Orchestra. His son Thomas is the

Souris District Arts Council is pleased to be able to bring him to the Souris Glenwood Community Hall on Friday evening, April 21, for an evening of laughter and enjoyment. Souris Minor Hockey Annual Awards Night submitted Souris Minor Hockey presented their 20162017 team and individual awards at a banquet April 5. The awards were presented as follows: Most Improved Female - Sidney Batycki This player has transitioned from a player who we used to wonder where she was going on the ice and listening to Michelle yell SIDNEY, to a player who we can trust to play her position. Trust to the point she became a player who could transition from wing to centre and even on occasion to defense. Her skating has improved a lot and her ability to see the open player and make a pass has also improved. Hardest Working Female - Kelsey Page When you think of hardworking players this player certainly fits the mould. Every practise she

gives it her all and when given advice by her coaches she goes out and puts it into action. She is a player that sometimes doesn’t get noticed by the occasional observer but she is very consistent game in and game out and you know that you are getting her hardest effort every time. Most Sportsmanlike Female - Brynn Tosh Shows respect to all her teammates, coaches, opposing players and referees. Know what you are getting from her every game, as her work ethic is consistent game in and game out. Well-respected player by the coaches and fellow teammates and by players and coaches throughout the league. Outstanding Pee Wee Defenseman - Louise Fergusson Louise has really improved year after year. She used to be a defense-

man who, when in trouble threw the puck over to the other side of the ice. Now she is confident and looks for an open player. She makes a really good first pass out of her own end; she is very strong defensively and has a patented rush that finishes off with a wrap around. All Around Bantam – Myles Sobry This young player has always shown leadership qualities in hockey and has

been a positive role model for his teammates from a young age. It’s no surprise that the coaching staff had no hesitation in choosing him as an assistant captain of the Bantam Elks this year. He always works hard, puts forth his best effort, and positively encourages his teammates to do the same. He is continually trying to improve his skills as shown by his regular attendance at breakfast club. He shows that he respects

his teammates on and off the ice, and has gained their respect in return. He is respectful to his coaches, the officials, and his opponents before, during, and after games beyond what would be expected from anyone his age. As a junior citizen, he shows great potential. He made a phone call this season to one of his teammates who was quite distressed when leaving the arena. He asked if he was all right, told him that what had happened to him and what was said was just not right, and spoke to him until he felt better. He

didn’t do this because he had to, but rather because he felt it was the right thing to do. This shows that he has a very healthy social attitude, has concern for those around him, and above all is willing to go out of his way to make a positive contribution in his community. All Around Bantam for a SMH product continuing in the AAA Bantam program – Landon Roberts Great kid and leader on and off the ice. Hard worker, positive attitude, easy to Continued on page 3

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Battle of VIMY Ridge 1917 - 2017 In the years since the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the legacy of the Canadians who accomplished so much in that important First World War battle lives on. At Vimy Ridge, regiments from across our country saw action, and together in a distinctively Canadian triumph, helped create a new and a stronger sense of national identity. Some say that Canada came of age as a country on those April days in 1917. The battle took place in northern France, roughly 175 kilometres north of Paris. The ridge itself is described as a long, high hill that dominates the surrounding landscape. Early in the war, the Germans captured the ridge and be-

gan work on fortifying it to create a strong defensive position. They had created a complex system of tunnels and trenches manned by numerous machine gun positions and artillery pieces. The battle began at 5:30 a.m. on Easter Monday, April 9. The first wave of 15,000 to 20,000 Canadians soldiers attacked through the wind-driven snow and heavy sleet into the face of deadly machine gun fire. The Canadians advanced behind heavy artillery that was meant to soften the German defences. Canadians would act with courage throughout the battle. Four of our soldiers would earn the

Victoria Cross, the highest medal for military valour. With our allies, we took the ridge and the Germans were forced to withdraw three kilometres to the east and the battle was over. The Allies now were in control of the heights overlooking the plains below.

Vimy Ridge proved to be a great success but it came at a heavy cost. The some 100,000 Canadians who served there suffered more than 10,600 casualties, nearly 3,600 of which were fatal. Canada’s military accomplishments during this battle and through-

out the war raised our international stature and helped us earn a separate signature on the Treaty of Versailles that formally ended the war. One hundred years later we still remember and pay homage to the sacrifices of our brave soldiers

who fought during Vimy Ridge and in all of the other battles and conflicts since then. Let us thank the men and women who have worn and continue to wear the uniform so proudly. Lest We Forget. Larry Maguire, MP Brandon-Souris

Ball diamond expansion on track for spring

Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, April 14, 2017

by Darci Semeschuk Souris Minor Ball is planning a big expansion and upgrade to their number four ball diamond. According to Minor Ball president, Loretta Turner, the planned project will see the Bantam diamond, or diamond number four as they refer to it, moved to the right and an area left for training. “This will make the diamond more usable by everyone,” explained Turner. “Not only will the Bantams have a regulation size diamond to play on, but the younger teams will have an area that can be used as a skills practice area to the east of the diamond. It will be a perfect spot for our 4 7-year-old Rally Caps.” Minor Ball has been fundraising for the $34,000 project since the fall of 2016. Grant applications have been sent out and they have held several fundrais-

ers including the Hobbycraft, Race Night and several barbecues. They also sent out fundraising packages to local businesses and organizations. The larger sponsors to date are the Souris Glenwood Foundation and Bayer Crop Sciences at the “Home Run” level of $2,500. CPS Crop Services have donated $2,400 to the project, followed by Pembina Co-op, Souris River Chiropractic, and the David and Lisa Edmunds family, all at $1,000. Finally to date, the Fergusson family, LT’s Corner Store, Royal Lepage and Kozak’s Construction have all come in the “double” category which is a donation in the $500 - $999 amounts. The project still needs $8,000 and Turner believes that the community will rally behind them to get this thing going. “Minor Ball has a reserve fund so we can begin building. In fact, I expect

that construction will begin Easter weekend and we hope to be on the diamond by May.” While the dugouts at diamond four also need upgrading, Turner says that is something that can be evaluated at a later date. For now they are concentrating on getting the actual field built and usable for the players. Souris Minor Ball is a very busy organization. While the season is short, they cram a lot of activity into the schedule. There are 135 players registered, accounting for 12 teams plus Rally Caps. These include: Softball: one under 10 years; one under 12 years; two under 14 years. Baseball: four under 9 years; one under 11 years; one under 13 years; one under 15 years; one under 18 years. There are 24 children in Rally Caps, 4 – 7 years. The next big fundraiser

will be their annual tournament. This will fall on the June 4 – 5 weekend. “This is always one of our main fundraiser,” explained Turner. They are also planning the popular Race Night again in the fall and to line their coffers, this year they will be charging admission at the gate. Adults will pay $5 and kids will pay $3 to enter the park for games. “We are planning to charge admission this year and we believe it is only a temporary measure until we get our project completed,” explained Turner. Minor Ball is a well run organization and Turner believes that is largely due to the commitment of the volunteers and the Board. There

are 17 Board members and Turner says that they all bring something unique and good to the Club. “It’s a good organization to belong to and the kids have fun,” she said. “That’s what it’s really all about.” In a final push for funds, Turner released this statement on Facebook: Help please, we are still in need of $8,000+ for Diamond #4. If you work for a company/ business that offers community grants or may be interested in our advertising opportunities, please pass their information on to me. We really don’t want to raise fees next year or bombard families with fundraisers this spring, so any help you can offer is appreciated. We

are also accepting private/ individual donations from “fans”, families and community members. Or, if you have an idea...please let us know. For now, it’s business as usual at the Souris Minor Ball Park. Practices begin this week and there are spring training camps planned. Baseball clinics begin April 11 and run for three weeks. Softball clinics begin April 12 and also run three weeks. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor or making a private donation to Souris Minor Ball can contact them for all the details, 204-7410742. We are able to work out a payment plan if required.

Happy Easter, everyone! Good news, Souris is not going to flood like we have had before, this is really good news, oh yes we still have lots of water right now, but it shouldn’t get worse, so here’s hoping! Did you get to the Winter Fair last week? I missed going, and I wished I had, I heard it was really good. Maybe next year if we could get enough people interested we could take a Handi-Van load over and really have a good time, just an idea. S.O.S is here for you to get help with almost anything you might need help with. We have many strong and helpful workers that would love to help you out. There is a fee of course and you can discuss this personally with the workers. If you would like help with spring cleaning inside your home, or help with cleaning up your yard for

the season, give us a call and we will get you some help as quickly as we can. We have drivers to get you to and from your appointments in and out of town. We like to use the Handi-van as much as possible, but if it is booked we will do our best to see you get to where you need to go. Also we have Cancer Care Drivers for those who need to get to Brandon for Treatments. Call to register with us and we will do the rest. The Victoria Lifeline is also hooked up by SOS and this unit will get you help 24 hours day seven days a week with just the push of a button. Please call us for more information on this special unit and help button. Cory Freisen will be playing the piano and signing Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. The Wonderful Shameless Folk, Bill Turner, Bruce Dunlop, Kerry Skinner, will be here on Thursday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. Next Handi-Van trip to Brandon will be April 19, be sure to call us if you would like to get away for an outing and maybe meet your friends in Brandon for shopping and lunch. Next Wednesday will be the day, so let us know if you would like to go! We are planning our SOS Spring Tea for May 26, so save the date and we will keep you updated as our plans spring into place! Happy Easter to everyone and I hope you get to spend it with family and friends. Blessings to one and all. Take care, that’s all for this week and we hope to hear from you soon!
