Races at Souris Airport Raceway by Darci Semeschuk Prairie Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, (PASCAR), a volunteer based non-profit group promoting motorsport in our region held their third race of the season at the Souris Airport Raceway Sunday, July 9. PASCAR’s primary focus is a 4 cylinder stock car class that includes cars like: Chev Cavaliers, Pontiac Sunbirds, Dodge Neon (fastest car last year – winner of the first race in 2016), Ford Mustang or Escorts, Nissan, Porsch 924 or 944, Honda/Acura Integra, Toyota MR2 (winner of the last race in 2015), and many more. PASCAR supports keeping our roads safe by educating and providing a venue to

take racing off the street and put it on the track. Keep checking the website and Facebook pages for updates on the track conditions and weather as well as the point race! Our racers run for points, no cash prizes - yet! Race days are open to the public and racing get underway at 1:00 p.m. The next race is slated for August 13. Test and Tune Days are intended to provide an opportunity for anyone interested in racing to come to the track and network or practice driving and/ or work on their car. All persons on the property will be required to sign a waiver on Test and Tune days. The next Test and Tune Day is July 30.

PASCAR races, held at the Souris Airport Raceway, offer a unique experience for fans. Pictured: Two cars race for top honours at the race held July 9.

Hartney and Reston of 23 locations to lose EMS station compiled by Darci Semeschuk A major overhaul of Manitoba’s Emergency Medical Services will include the closure of 23 low call-volume rural stations. Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen said five new strategically placed stations will replace the shuttered stations as the province moves to a goal of 24-7 paramedic coverage.

New sites will be located in Alonsa, Cowan, Miniota, Eriksdale and Manigotagan, while stations in Virden and Glenboro will be enhanced. The changes stem from recommendations contained in the 2013 Provincial EMS Review by Reg Toews, which was commissioned by the previous NDP government. The list of stations to close includes

Baldur, Birtle, Boissevain, Cartwright, Elkhorn, Ethelbert, Grandview, Hamiota, Hartney, McCreary, Oak Lake, Reston, Rossburn, Treherne, and Wawanesa. Stations in Elie, Manitou, Swan Lake, Bissett, Lundar, Pinawa, Reynolds and Riverton will also close. A provincial spokesperson stressed they will not be closed

until capacity is created with new sites. Closed sites may be repurposed as maintenance facilities, storage or used as flexible dispatch posts. Health Minister Goertzen was at Brandon Regional Health Centre to announce the province will invest $1.7 million to add 29 full-time paramedic positions across three regional health

authorities: Prairie Mountain Health, Southern Health and Interlake-Eastern. The new positions will soon be located in Arborg, Ashern, Waterhen, Gladstone/Kinosota, Carman and Morris. Four paramedics have already been hired for Glenboro. They will replace on-call, standby shifts at seven stations across southern Manitoba.

by Darci Semeschuk Fair organizers were pleased to report the 2017 Souris & Glenwood Agricultural Society Fair was a complete success with approximately 400 people through the gate. According to organizer, Jesse Goodwill, Saturday was a busy

day. “We had the parade, tractor pull, slo-pitch tournament, roast beef supper, and 4-H cattle show,” she said. “That, along with team roping and barrel racing on both days, made it a busy weekend.” Goodwill reported there were 36 team ropers, nine teams for

the slo-pitch tournament, 17 tractors for the tractor pull, and approximately 50 barrel racers, as well as 40 entries for the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce parade. The children’s entertainment (sand pit treasure hunt, town wide scavenger hunt and face

painting) was a huge hit for the children all day long on Saturday. Events such as the Souris Fair don’t happen without a lot of volunteer help and sponsorship. “Thank you to the various sponsors for their support of the Fair because without them

we couldn’t manage,” Goodwill explained. “Thank you to those who supported Souris Minor Ball at the Barn Bar and Souris Elks B.P.O.E. #21 at the food booth. Lastly, a huge thank you to the volunteers for their contribution towards making this Fair a great weekend for all to enjoy.”

Severe weather rages across southern Manitoba Southwest Manitoba residents awoke to downed trees and damaged property on Tuesday morning after a severe thunderstorm raged across Saskatchewan and into Manitoba on July 10 and the early hours of July 11. Clean up crews were out first thing in the morning removing fallen and broken trees in an effort to put things back to normal. Souris residents reported damage to property, homes, and trampolines even ended up in their neighbours yard! Letter to the Editor Dear editor, We would like to acknowledge the good work of the Souris EDO, Lon Turner, and his Canada Day 150 Committee did to plan and carry out the wonderful celebration in the park for our July long weekend.

We noticed all the Canadian flags flying over our business places and homes in Souris. It makes us proud! From the RBC lunch uptown on Friday at noon, to the fireworks on Friday night, to the well-planned celebrations on Satur-

day afternoon in the Bowl, next to the celebrations at Hillcrest Museum and Open House for their 50th birthday, and opening of their 50-year-old time capsule, the afternoon was a success. There was also a successful book

launching by a local author at the Museum grounds. It was a wonderful event. This week was a lot of work for some people and all who attended very well received it. —P. Andrew and friends

Possible partnership between Fellowship Club and CDC in the works by Darci Semeschuk Community Development Officer (CDC) Lon Turner has the support of

his Board of Directors regarding a proposal that he believes will give the Souris Fellowship Club a

new lease on life. “The Fellowship Club has a suite upstairs that could be renovated into a

condo,” explained Turner. “Once the work is complete, the top floor of the building could be sold and the Fellowship Club would retain ownership of the basement and main floor. The money from the sale, and condo fees, would enable the Fellowship Club to operate for many years to come. Additionally, it would bring a new family to Crescent Avenue.” Turner says the top floor of the Fellowship Club is very roomy and has sat unused for quite some time. With a little work, it could be a lovely home for as many as a family of five. With a condo occupying the top floor of the building, there is a potential market value in excess of $100,000 along

with the monthly condo fees, this would be a lucrative project for the Fellowship Club. The proposal sent to the Fellowship Club outlined the concept and offered to partner with them on the project, covering all costs of the conversion which the Club would pay back once the condo is sold. “We know that the upstairs suite in the building is unrented and that there is no one on the Fellowship Club that has an interest in renovating the space,” explained Turner. “With the CDC helping them, we believe it is a win-win situation for everyone.” Turner also said that if the Club so desires, the CDC would continue to help manage the property

after the sale. “This would be a good partnership. Good for them and good for the Town as a new resident on the Crescent would be good for the community,” added Turner. If the Fellowship Club agree to this partnership, the CDC would cover the $15,000 – $20,000 conversion fees, including subdividing and legal fees. The cost of renovations could be the responsibility of the new owners or a deal could be struck between the CDC and the Fellowship Club to fund those costs until the sale is complete. Turner is waiting to hear back from the Fellowship Club regarding the partnership idea.

Souris athletes crack U19 Prairie Blizzard roster by Darci Semeschuk Souris School rugby alumni, Matthew Vinck, Adam Kowalchuk, and Zach Armstrong cracked the roster for the twentyfour-man rugby squad, the Prairie Blizzard. The team, which will play for a national championship, is comprised of elite athletes from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. They will compete at the U19

Canadian Rugby Championship to be held in Truro, Nova Scotia, July 17 – 23. The Prairie Blizzard is in its inaugural season and on the bench will be some familiar faces. Long-time Souris coach, and the person responsible for bringing the sport of rugby to this community more than a decade ago, Brian Yon will co-

coach with Richard Brinley from Saskatchewan. Deanna Kowalchuk will act as trainer for the team. According to the announcement on Rugby Manitoba, this is a ground breaking season for rugby in both provinces and the staff are excited to see this squad make waves at the highest level age grade competition in the country.

Fair Day

There’s nothing like a small town fair to bring out the people and close to 400 went through the gates last weekend as Souris hosted their 133rd annual fair. And there’s nothing like a beautiful team of horses to bring on the feelings of nostalgia. Pictured above the Ag Society entered a horse drawn float in the Chmaber of Commerce parade.

SOS (Senior’s Organized Services) is located in Victoria Park Lodge, 135 3rd St. South, Souris. Our office hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Phone 204-4833106. Wow, what a thunder banger and lots of lightening we had Monday night. Lots of trees were blown over and or ripped out of the ground, lawn furniture tossed around, and lots of rain. Glad it didn’t do more damage but I am hearing some crops didn’t fair so well, and that for sure is not good. Hoping everyone is safe and that any damages done can be repaired. Remember, if you need help inside or outside your home, give us a call and we will get you the help

you request just as soon as we can. We can also help you out with car rides if the Handi-Van is booked. We have drivers to get you to and from your appointments or errands. We have cancer care drivers, too. Hoping you never need them but if you do they are ready to get you to Brandon for your treatments and back home. S.O.S. also hooks up the Victoria Lifeline, which is a service that you can use by just pushing a button to get you help 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call us for more details. It will give you and your family reassurance that if they can’t be there all the time, that help is only a push of your button away! Peace of mind for you and your loved ones. Congregate Meals are held at Crescent Manor five days a week, call 204483-3990 for more information. For $10 you get a great home cooked meal
