Souris falls short in Zone 9 finals
The Zone 9 Curling Championships were held in Elkhorn, February 10 and 11. Souris’s boy’s team members were Sam West, Tristen Matiowski, Leeam William, and Tanner Scraba. Their first game was
against Virden #1, skipped by Brooks Freeman. This very strong team defeated Souris 6-0. This Virden team were last year’s winners and had just finished winning the Westman 18 and under Regional playoffs the
week before. On the B-side of the draw the Souris boys came up with two strong wins. They defeated the Virden #2 team by a 6-3 score, then defeated Elkhorn 9-2. By winning the B-side, they had
another chance to play Virden #1. The boys started out strong. The first end was blanked and then Souris stole one in the second. Virden scored four in the third but Souris picked up one in the fourth. However as the

Another really nice day out again today as I write this information for you. Still very slippery out, so tread carefully, but enjoy the fresh air. Also hoping everyone, young and old, had a really nice Valentine’s Day. I saw lots of people wearing red and pink for the special occasion and it was really nice to see. Getting involved for
special days, just makes it even nicer. We have some school students here today reading to the seniors and there sounds like quite a buzz going on but everyone is enjoying the stories and the time with these great children who took the time with their teachers to come and read with the seniors. Well done. A few minutes of their time sure makes for a wonderful day for the ones at VPL. Some Words to Think About: Time to talk, time to listen, two priceless gifts we can give to the lonely. Do you have them to give? Think about it and you might well find that you do! Coming to VPL for your information by Age and Opportunity from Winnipeg,

February 24, is Sheldene. She will be talking about Safety in Your Homes and Safety at ATMs, frauds, and scams, and identity theft, as well as other good information to help protect yourself from thieves. Time is 11:00 a.m. at VPL. Everyone is welcome to come. Question: Please does anyone have any extra clear plastic holders from their Auto Pac holders? Could you check vehicles you aren’t using and see if there are any that aren’t too dirty, that we could clean up and re-use. Auto-Pac doesn’t have them anymore and we need them for our ERIK Kits. Thank you so much for taking the time to look and a special thank you if you can find some and bring them to us at the office, or we will gladly come and pick them up! If you have any good news please put it in the paper, as our paper seems to get smaller each week. People say there is nothing to read, well, what have you put in it for others to read? There used to be something from all the little areas around us, maybe just that someone came for supper or cards, about meetings.
Let’s try and get something in the paper to keep others interested in buying it and we can all enjoy the little stories, too. Let’s put something in our town paper each week, so we don’t loose it. You might think you have nothing to put in but I’ll bet you do, just try. Something funny that has happened in your life, some ideas of ways to do things better, whatever you feel you might like to read if someone else put it in. Things to do with us at Victoria Park Lodge: Monday and Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. - Fun chair exercises; Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. - Fun Bingo; Friday, 1:30 p.m. - Fun games; Cory entertaining on the piano and sing-a-longs, too, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. At Crescent Manor - Thursday at 10:00 a.m. come join us for chair exercises. Come join
in the fun! S.O.S. will hook up the Victoria Lifeline Service which will get you help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with just the push of a button. Cancer Care drivers are also available to get you to and from your cancer treatments. Call the office and we will do the rest for you, booking your rides, as long as you give us the dates and times of the appointments. Our drivers are confidential and reliable. We hope you never need this service but it is available through SOS if you do. We are also in need of more drivers. Please call us if you can assist. Congregate Meals are served five days a week at Crescent Manor at 5:00 p.m. If you would like to enjoy a delicious home cooked meal and good
company, call 204-4833990 and book yourself in, you’ll be glad you did. You can purchase some take home meals as well. It’s a great time to visit and eat with others and enjoy the visiting, too. The Handi-Van will get you to and from your in/ or out of town appointments. If the Van is booked we will do our best to get you one of our reliable and friendly drivers. We have many things going on from the SOS office, so give us a call, and we will fill you in. We love to hear from you and if you have any ideas of things you would like us to try and do, by all means let us know! We have many services but if there are others that you think could be of help, please let us know! That’s all for this week. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.
submitted The varsity girls basketball team travelled to Boissevain to take on the number one ranked Broncos last Tuesday. The game was tight all the way with both teams sharing the lead. The ladies had a five-minute stretch in the third quarter where they had trouble scoring which turned out to be the difference in the game as they fell 53-45. Aly Kowalchuk paced the attack with 16 points. On the weekend the ladies played in the Hamiota Invitational Tournament and opened with a pair of wins. First against Major Pratt (Russell) 68-48, with Aly scoring 19 points and Parker Janz adding 12 more. Next they played against the Glenboro Panthers, the team that defeated them in their home tourna-
ment final. The girls played an outstanding second half, especially at the defensive end, as they pulled away to a 58-38 victory. Tanja recorded a double/double with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Lisa Gohl added seven steals. In the tournament final the ladies once again faced the Broncos. The two teams played a close first quarter with the Sabres holding a slim lead at the break. However, the next three quarters saw Boissevain dominate as they won the tournament title with a 65-35 win. Tanja had 14 points and Lisa added nine in the loss. Aly and Tanja were named to the tournament all-star team. The team travels to Elton this weekend for their last tournament action of the season. Congratulations go out
to Aly Kowalchuk who was named the Manitoba High School Athletic Association Athlete of the Week last week!

Icy roads create dicey situation for RCMP
Page 3, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, February 17, 2017
submitted On Saturday, February 11, at 11:19 p.m. Brandon RCMP were conducting traffic control approximately 1/4 mile east of Road 129W on Hwy 1, in the eastbound lane, 19 miles west of Brandon. The Police vehicle had the eastbound passing lane blocked, with activated rear emergency lights, rear directional arrow activated and pointing to the right, and the four way flashers on. Traffic control was being conducted while Accel Towing was on scene towing out a Ford pickup truck and U-Haul trailer from a collision that happened earlier. Headlights were observed coming up from behind and then suddenly the semi truck’s flat deck trailer hit the Police vehicle. Member seated in the vehicle was not injured. The semi trailers were now causing a blockage of the both lanes causing traffic to come to a stand still. Road conditions were icy and there was a strong wind blowing from the northwest, with snow blowing across the road, but emergency vehicles could still be observed from a long distance away.
GAJENDER SINGH of Edmonton, 27-yearsold, was charged with Drive Imprudent Section 95(3); Drive Carelessly Section 188(2); When approaching or passing emergency or designated vehicle stopped or engaged in prescribed activity and using emergency beacon or other required equipment, fail to move into a farther lane Section 109.1(2), all under the Highway Traffic Act. RCMP urge travellers to slow down and pull over well in advance when
approaching emergency crew workers of all sorts on Manitoba Highways. Failure to do so may find you receiving a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act with an associated fine of $299.65. On Sunday, February 12, at 07:49 a.m., Blue Hills RCMP were notified by Virden RCMP of a vehicle theft of a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado from the town. On Star provided a current location and Blue Hills RCMP positioned in order to intercept. An officer observed the suspect
without incident. Holland Fire Department retrieved the female and the officer on foot. While investigating, Police learn of a single vehicle collision on Highway #1, west of Brandon, which was suspicious, as the ignition had been tampered with on a 2004 Ford E250 Cube Van. It was learned that it had been stolen out of Winnipeg. It was later linked that the two matters were related and the same suspects were involved. All three will be facing
criminal charges of Possess Property obtained by Crime X 2, one male for theft of motor Vehicle X 2 and the other male for Flight from Peace Officer and Dangerous Driving all contrary to the Criminal Code. The female had a warrant for her arrest out of Winnipeg for breaching her Recognizance. The two males were also on court-imposed conditions. All three will appear in Brandon Court on Monday, February 13, 2017, on initial first appearances. The investigation is on going.
RCMP escape injury in frightening crash On Saturday, February 11, RCMP members were attending a crash and assisting a tow truck driver in removing the damaged vehicle when a semi truck struck them from behind. Fortunately no one was injured. The 27-year-old semi driver was charged with Drive Imprudent Section 95(3); Drive Carelessly Section 188(2); When approaching or passing emergency or designated vehicle stopped or engaged in prescribed activity and using emergency beacon or other required equipment, fail to move into a farther lane Section 109.1(2); all under the Highway Traffic Act. by Alexis MacLean A pair of mysteries are on the shelf this week: ‘By Gaslight’ by Steven Price, and ‘Bryant and May: Strange Tide’ by Christopher Fowler.
‘By Gaslight’ turned out to be a major disappointment. Set in Victorian England for the most part, it was supposed to tell the tale of the search for Edward Shade, a notorious thief who has eluded capture for decades. Two men of very different backgrounds are on his trail: William Pinkerton, son of the founder of Pinkerton’s
Detective Agency, and Adam Foole, a man seemingly without a past. Their search takes them through opium dens, séance halls, sewers and any number of equally unsavoury spots, and if it had restricted itself to that the story might have been good. As it is, however, the story careens back and forth not only between characters but also time frames and continents,

not to mention storylines – primarily involving Foole’s early life. An overly long book at 730 pages, it was tedious in the extreme. It took me two and a half months to read – primarily because I repeatedly abandoned it for other books. The author didn’t seem to be able to decide what story he wanted to tell and so told them all – poorly. His tendency to toss in any and all historical tidbits of the various London settings only added to the tedium as the book was thus expanded from a detective story to a character study to a story of the American Civil War to a history of the Pinkerton Agency to a historical map of London and more. In short, I would advise against this book. It just isn’t worth the time and effort it takes to ferret out the interesting bits. ‘Bryant and May: Strange Tide’ is the latest in a series – something I did not know when I purchased it. As it turns out, one need not have read any of the previous volumes to fully appreciate this one, but you should be aware of the fact that it is not your usual detective story. Bry-
Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, February 17, 2017 ant and May work in the Peculiar Crimes Unit of the London police force – and that should be a hint as to the rather different nature of the story. The tale begins when the body of a young woman is found chained to a stone post in the Thames, with only one set of footprints leading to her body. So, was this a suicide? The detectives don’t think so. But Bryant is suffering a disastrous mental decline, one which finds him periodically thrown back in time to become part of various historical events in London’s history. Are these episodes merely manifestations of his mental disease, or hallucinations that represent Bryant’s subconscious mind trying to tell him something? As for his partner, May’s effectiveness in the investigation takes a disastrous turn when he
becomes the major suspect in one of the killings. So, we have one detective hallucinating at unpredictable times and in unpredictable ways while the other is effectively under house arrest for a murder he may or may not have committed…. A host of other characters each add their own peculiarities to the story as one is led on a rather torturous path toward the mystery’s solution. I can’t say I was completely taken with the book as I became a bit annoyed at the various detours and side stories. Neither did I particularly dislike it though. Indeed, I am probably going to seek out at least one of the earlier volumes in the series so as to get a better feel for the characters. Overall it was not a bad book and certainly a change from the usual mystery pattern.

People pleased with convenience of Passport Clinic by Darci Semeschuk Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, hosted a Passport Clinic on Saturday, February 11, at the Souris Community Hall. Over two hundred applications were processed at the four-hour event. Maguire’s office arranged for staff and volunteers, like Colleen Robbins, to be available to assist those attending in either renewing or becoming a first time passport holder. A photographer was on hand to take passport photos and MP Maguire’s office will make sure that the
completed applications will be sent directly to Passport Canada. Maguire said, “I truly believe in improving constituent services for the people of Westman. I also want to make it as easy as possible for folks to access the services of the Government of Canada and be available to speak to any of your concerns.” Over the past three years, Maguire has held Passport Clinics in Boissevain, Killarney, Virden, Pilot Mound, Melita and Holland.

Christmas Cheer Report for 2017 submitted by The Souris Christmas Cheer Committee Once again, the Town of Souris and district have given overwhelming support to the Souris and Area Christmas Cheer Board. We gave out 58 hampers to Souris, Carroll and Elgin area this past Christmas season. This is an increase in the number we have had in past years. We noted a significant increase in 2014 and the number grows by a few each year.
The cash donations, donations of food and gifts from individuals and organizations in Souris and surrounding area, helped to make Christmas a little brighter for many families in our community. Several groups and individuals sponsored families and provided entire hampers. We are extremely grateful for this assistance. Souris School had a food drive and donated to Christmas Cheer. Any surplus of food was given to our local Har-
vest Food Bank. Many people outside of the Cheer Board itself helped to pack hampers and make deliveries, which is no small task. We wish to thank everyone who donated their time so willingly. Also thanks to the people who contacted the Board to submit the name of someone in need or just to offer a helping hand. We should be proud of the fact that we live in such and caring and generous community.
