Keeping their memories alive for all to know Remembrance Day services were held in Souris, November 11 at the Souris Community Hall. Following the ceremony, the congregation marched to the Royal Canadian Legion for the Wreath Laying ceremony and lunch. Honouring Canada’s fallen Letter to the Editor; I’ve been part of the annual Poppy Campaign for several years, and I’d like to remind Canadians of the impact that the Poppy Campaign has. The Poppy is worn each year during the Remembrance period to honour Canada’s Fallen, to ensure that we never forget those who sacrificed for our freedom. Every year, The Royal
Canadian Legion conducts the Poppy Campaign to raise funds in support of Veterans and their families. Poppies are distributed freely, and it is your generous donations that are so important to our veterans. Contributions received from the Poppy Campaign go directly to the Veterans. Through your donations to the Legion Poppy Fund, the Legion
provides financial assistance and support to Veterans, including Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, and their families who are in need. Your donations cannot be used for any other purpose. If you want more information than I have given, The Royal Canadian Legion website, www. legion.ca could be very helpful to you. Valerie Bergen

Mary Ann Carlisle is in on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays. Teenie is in the office on Monday and Wednesday. Just wanted to say the Remembrance Day Service this year, with the Anglican Minister Jonathon Hoskin was excellent, and it was good to see so many people out for the service. I remember years when the hall was packed, but it was still a good turn out, and such a nice day, too. Those from the Legion marching and all others involved, well done! We had Dale and Brenda Lyons here at VPL for entertaining last week; we always enjoy their country singing, electric keyboard and guitar playing too. They’ll be back again in December 8 with some Christmas country music, and it is always good. Hope you can come then too. Winter is here and so is the ice and snow! I love the snow, so fresh and white and clean, the ice not so much, so take care when you are out getting some nice clean fresh air, and don’t slip!
HELLOOOO! When cleaning out your extras, if you find wool and/or some craft materials we would love to have them at the SOS office and we will be sure to get them to someone who can do some knitting for those that need it, or make crafts for some fun things to do! Cancer Care Patients Registrations and Rides are now being booked through the Winnipeg office from now on please call 1-800-263-6750, and give them three days notice, when possible, Our Office can no longer book rides. But please do not hesitate to call us at 204-483-3106 if you need the Cancer Care number again, or any other way we may be able to help you. We just cannot do the bookings any longer for the Cancer Care Rides as they have a new automative system set up to it all now. Information! For those of you who have been living here for years or even a short while who don’t know who to call to get help with housework, yard work, as needed or weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, you decide and we will do our best to get a worker for you as quickly as we can. If you are younger and would like to do housecleaning and yard work we can always use more workers too. Remember we can also help you out with car rides if the Handi-Van is booked we have drivers to get you to and from your appointments or errands. SOS also hooks up the Victoria Lifeline, which is a service that you can use by just pushing a but-
ton to get you help 24 hours a day seven days a week. Call us for more details. Remembering Number “9”
Barry Moffatt was a local, much loved hockey player with the Souris Elks in December of 1969. With just under three minutes left in the game, Barry Moffatt was crosschecked at his own blue line, fell to the ice and fractured his skull. He died at the Souris Hospital the same night. The Souris Senior Elks have retired Number “9” and now, 48 years after that tragic day, are holding a ceremony to commemorate Barry Moffatt’s memory and commitment to sports in Manitoba. The ceremony will be just before their 8:00 p.m. game on November 17 at the Souris Arena. There will be a “Hot Stove” after the game. PHOTO/SUBMITTED
By Darci Semeschuk You may wonder why you never see a player on the Souris Senior Elks wearing a Number 9 on his jersey. In fact, even some of the newer Elks wonder why they’re prohibited from wearing number “9’. That number was retired a few years ago but the Elks wanted to do more than just hang a number, they wanted to remember the man that wore that number and shed a little light on why it’s in the rafters and not on the backs of present and future Elks. Barry Moffatt was a beloved Carroll boy, well known in the Souris area. His wife, Jean hailed from Portage and the two of them had three children and farmed in the Carroll district. Tragedy struck when Barry, a member of the Souris Elks was critically injured while playing in a hockey game in Souris on December 30, 1969. The terrible accident happened with only two minutes, forty-two seconds left in the game. Number “9” fell to the ice after being crosschecked at his own

blue line. There were no helmets in 1969. Before his teammates, family, and fans, he struck the back of his head on the ice, fracturing his skull. He never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the Souris Hospital. Barry’s young wife, Jean was left alone to raise three children: Debbie, only 9-years-old at the time; Shane, who was 8; and little Dean, only 4-years-old when his dad died. The tragedy didn’t only devastate the Moffatt family, it shocked the entire community and the Manitoba sporting world. Barry was well known throughout the province as an all-star athlete. He was a perennial all-star in the Southwest Manitoba Hockey League and the Manitoba Senior Baseball League where he won the 1969 league batting crown. He was posthumously inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. The tragedy could have turned his loved ones away from the sport of hockey, but in actual fact, the opposite occurred.
Jean made sure Barry’s sons knew the sport. Shane went on to play Junior hockey and Dean was a gifted player ion his own right. Shane and Debbie’s children also played and excelled at the same sports as their grandfather did so despite never knowing him. Barry’s grandchildren and now, great grandchildren continue playing the sport he loved. It’s in the genes. So when someone asks why there’s no “9” on a Souris Elks back, you can tell him or her that Number “9” will forever be reserved for Barry Moffatt. It will serve to keep his memory, his story, and his love for the sport of hockey alive for future generations. The Souris Senior Elks are honouring Barry Moffatt’s memory and officially retiring his number in a ceremony on Friday, November 17. There will be a small speech before the game which features the Elks hosting Hartney followed by a Hot Stove in the Kirkup Lounge immediately following the game. The public is encouraged to attend.

Remembrance Day 2017 It was a beautiful day for the ceremonies commemorating Remembrance Day 2017. A good crowd was on hand to hear Ron Barclay and Clare Somersall read the Roll of Honour and Jonathon Hoskin gave a thoughtful message. Grant Jackson sang a spirited rendition of “In Flanders Fields” followed by The Lord’s Prayer and God Save the Queen. After the colours were marched out a wreath laying ceremony was held at the Souris Legion. Pictured here, the RCMP, resplendent in Red Serge marched the colours to the Legion. Bobby Edgerton laid the wreath on behalf of the Souris Legion and Joan Goodwill receives her program from Cub members, (L-R): Colin Peters and Riley Swaenepoel-Robertson. PHOTOS/DARCI SEMESCHUK

‘Bridging the gap’ on the Souris Swinging Bridge
Members of the Souris community were concerned with damage that occurred to the Swinging Bridge sometime over the weekend. A large portion of the wire mesh that lines the sides of the bridge was torn out leaving a gaping hole. Residents reported the incident on Facebook to warn residents to watch their kids and pets as the breach was approximately eight feet long and could result in a bad fall for those unaware of it. Call to the municipal office resulted in public works personnel attending and installing a temporary repair. Town officials say that they are planning a permanent repair. Vandalism has not been ruled out as other reports state that fire extinguishers were found at the bottom of the bridge. PHOTO/FACEBOOK
