Working hard to keep Souris blooms looking great

Keeping Souris looking great is a never-ending job and one that’s shared by staff and volunteers alike. Once the Souris Beautification Committee gets the planters filled with gorgeous blooms, the watering must be done on a regular basis. That’s where summer staff member Kaylee Butterfield comes in. You can see Kaylee, and appreciate her commitment to keeping Souris beautiful, ever day as she waters and cares for the baskets, planters and flower beds.

STARS dispatched to Souris Souris Plaindealer An early morning picture of an accident scene on Highway 2 showing a tangled wreck posted to 94 Star FM’s Facebook page was quickly removed. The driver of the pickup truck in the photo is in serious condition after a collision west of Souris Thursday morning. Early investigation by RCMP shows a pickup truck

veered across the centre line of Highway 2 and struck a semi truck. The collision occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. on August 10. After the patient was initially treated at Souris Health Centre, he was transported by Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, a spokesperson with the air ambulance said. He described the crash,

three kilometres west of Souris, as a “highway speed head-on collision”. The driver of the semi truck was not hurt. Police had closed the highway around the incident that morning. A forensic collision re-constructionist was on site. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Police said.

Work continues on the replacement of the old Bailey Bridge located on the east side of Victoria Park. Another project to remediate the banks of Plum Creek that was on hold to accommodate fish spawning is now underway. Both projects, jointly shared between the Provincial and Federal governments through the Disaster Assistance Program, are expected to cost $2.7 million. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Bridge construction and creek bank remediation continues in Victoria Park

by Darci Semeschuk Many people in Souris are curious about the activity that’s occurring in Victoria Park. Last week super sandbags and portable fencing were deposited,

stemming the flow of Plum Creek and bringing back reminders of the devastating flood of 2011. Town officials confirmed that the work is being conducted to restore the banks on

the creek after the severe erosion of the past floods. The job was to be done in conjunction with the new bridge construction that is currently underway on the east side of Victoria Park,

or the Kirkup Bridge, as it was known. Unfortunately, a wet spring put the job on hold and once the ground was dry enough to carry the heavy equipment and trucks required to com-

plete the work, fish spawning once again held them back. The time is now right for the project to commence. The creek bank remediation is projected

to cost $1 million and the current bridge replacement is in excess of $1.5 million. These projects are cost shared between the federal and provincial governments. Pleased to introduce

by Reena Dear Reena, Whenever I purchase household items that have thick packaging encasing them, it takes me a mountain of time and frustration to remove the plastic, often my scissors can’t cut through the thick plastic. Do you have any ideas to make this easier? Gloria Dear Gloria, Run a manual can opener along the edge of the plastic, you won’t believe how much easier this task becomes. Dear Reena, We installed new appliances recently and I could remove the thin film protective coating on all but the microwave. The remaining film on the microwave seems thinner than the other protective coatings that I removed. Any suggestions on how to remove the remaining film? Jill Dear Jill, Without knowing the microwave brand, I can tell you that some manufactures install thin plastic film that is peel-able only when certain screws are removed. Other microwaves have a thin plastic coating that is added as a permanent part to the microwave. Please double check the manufacturer’s instructions. If the film is removable, here are a few tips sent in by other readers in this predicament; wipe the microwave with cook-

ing spray and scrape with a plastic credit card. Or wipe with household ammonia, peel and wash with dish soap and water. Test on an inconspicuous area first. Dear Reena, I can’t seem to make my white socks remain white after laundering. Any suggestions? Urma Dear Urma, Some lower quality socks pill and darken after laundering. Purchase medium quality socks and toss them in a pot with one tablespoon lemon juice or a half lemon. Boil for 5 minutes. Cool and wash as normal. Dear Reena, I have used the same plastic containers for 25 years and they are still in good shape. The problem is that they carry a food odour that I can’t get rid of. I need your help! Michelle Dear Michelle, Use a pastry brush and smear the plastic interior with either mustard or toothpaste. Make sure that you cover every corner. Fill the container with water and leave for a few hours, the smell should be gone. If the containers continue to smell, stuff them with crumpled newspaper, seal and leave for a few days. Remove the newspaper. Contributor’s Share • To remove clown make-up from

I now have another tip for you. If you have a bottle that you would like to remove the label from without frustration, it is easy to do, and very environmental. Take a tissue that is wide enough to cover the bottle and long enough to completely wrap around it. Soak it with just enough Williams Lectric Shave so that it is well soaked. Cover with a plastic film and let sit for 5 or 6 hours. Depending on the glue and length of time soaking, the label should slide off as if it was held in place by oil, with little, if any, subsequent clean-up. If I a guy can use it on his face before shaving, it ought not be too harmful like other products!

Please help me to rectify an embarrassing situation. In my report to you last week regarding Souris Railway Museum’s latest acquisition, I forgot to include two special volunteers names. Superstore set to film commercial in Souris by Darci Semeschuk One of Souris’s most famous landmarks, the Souris Swinging Bridge, is about to become a focal point in a commercial. According to the production company, Steam, based in Toronto, their client Real Canadian Superstore is filming a commercial right across Canada and selected Souris because of the iconic bridge. According to Laura Neufeld, a representative for the company, an actor will be walking on the bridge with produce from Superstore. “Representatives from Steam are flying to Winnipeg on August 16 and we’re driving out to Souris to just get a feel of the place and have a look around,” she explained. “I am still waiting to hear back from the municipality on a few details about the bridge.” While the crew will be filming for about six hours,

the Souris portion of the commercial is just a small segment. The shoot is slated for Thursday, August 24, and the street around the bridge and access to the bridge will be cut off for the duration of the shoot. There will be approximately 15 crew and they will be using public parking near the bridge for the crew vehicles. “We are excited to be coming to Souris for this shoot and hope that the disruption won’t affect too many people while we’re there,” stated Neufeld. As far as when the commercial will air, Neufeld is not sure as yet. “They will be shooting for a week or so and then once production is done the commercial will be released,” she explained. “I will know more after I meet with the company on August 16, but for now I don’t have an exact timeline.”

The production company, Steam, out of Toronto, is set to shoot a commercial for their client, Real Canadian Superstore, on the iconic Souris Swinging Bridge. The commercial will shoot for six hours on Thursday, August 24.

The Carberry News-Express Suspect attempts to gain entry to school through hatch of roof One suspect gained access to the roof of the Craberry Collegiate and attempted to gain entry to the school through a hatch. An alarm was activated alerting personnel. The person did not gain entry. Carberry U14 girls win gold The 2017 season will be one to remember. The Carberry U14 girls softball team only lost three games all season. They finished standings with the Westman Softball League and got silver in the League’s yearend tournament in a close game (5-3) against a Brandon team. This team of local Carberry girls have played together since U8. Every season the girls return with an obvious love of the game and desire to get better. They’ve been chasing down a gold medal at provincials for the last few years and finally achieved it. At the conclusion of league play, the girls took time from their summer holidays to work hard and continue to perfect their skills prior to the U14B Girls Provincials in Steinbach on July 14-16. They were able to go through the 27 team provincial tournament undefeated to become the 2017 Minor U14B Girls Provincial Champs. The World-Spectator Constituency office doubles as an art gallery Moosomin hasn’t had a public art gallery for many years but the office of MLA Steven Bonk will now do double duty, hosting art shows by local artist. The Town use to have an art gallery in the back of the library before the new library was built as part of the town office. The original plan was to have bi-level library/art gallery on the south side of the building, but the art gallery portion was eliminated as a cost-cutting measure. Lots of Questions at the wind turbine regulation meeting There were lots of questions at an RM of Rocanville public meeting Thursday regarding the regulations of mind farms. The RM held the meeting to gauge public opinion on the bylaw regarding sitting of wind farms. The current bylaw limits the height of wind turbines to 100 metres, while new turbines are up to 200 metres high. Council members intended the bylaw to restrict wind turbines within 1.6 miles of a residence, although wording of the bylaw is unclear on that point. The Observer Adrian Paton’s ‘Legacy of the Land’ Prairie historian Adrian Paton hosted a unique commemoration at his Arcola-area farm on Saturday July 30, as over 100 family members and friend gathered for a ‘Legacy of the Land’ ceremony.

Shoal Lake woman hits grocery jackpot For Megan Hersak, it was smiles all around upon being presented with a banner declaring she was the winner of $10,000 in groceries at Bigway Foods in Shoal Lake last week. The Western Producer Smaller harvest likely to take longer Farmers and grain companies are preparing for a prolonged harvest and a below-average crop. Provincial specialists are forecasting smaller than usual crops in Alberta and Saskatchewan because of hot and dry conditions.

Canada urged to go on trade offensive over subsidies Hitting back should be an important part of dealing with Canada’s tricky agriculture competitors in negotiations, says a new report. Foreign competitors have been clever in appearing to abandon trade-distorting subsidies but have actually done little to minimize their actual production-distorting farm support spending. Diamondback moths pressure canola growers Diamondback moths are the big story in canola of late, says Canola Council of Canada agronomy specialist Keith Gabert. He said that farmer’s queries about the pesky insects have dominated his voice mail in recent days, and problems have been reported from Calgary to Winnipeg.

Save the bees one photo at a time by Brandi Pollock Winnie the Pooh would not be happy with the low numbers of bees in Canada. “A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside,” said Pooh. If we don’t save the bees, Canada’s honey pot will soon be bone dry. With recent concerns on the decline of bumble bees, Friends of the Earth is launching their second, “Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count.” The Campaign is asking for everyone’s help with the count. It is as simple as taking a picture of bumble bees you see and uploading them with observations to help scientists better track the bees and learn more on them. The count is taking place until September 15, 2017. “Bees are up against big stresses like habitat loss, climate change, pesticides, and diseases,” says John Bennett, Senior

Policy Advisor, Friends of the Earth Canada. “Canada has over 40 species of bumblebees but many of them are in trouble. Photos and observations on bumble bees from the Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count could signal changes in how bumble bees are dealing with the same issues you and I face–from heat waves to fires and floods. This is critical information and we need help from concerned citizens.” Last year there were 1,218 pictures submitted of bumble bees along with observations; 12 of these submissions were of the critically at-risk Yellowbanded bumble bee. Bumble bees play a huge role in our society, with over two-thirds of the food crops we depend on benefiting from pollination by native bees, and honey bees. “We know from our recent poll that Canadians

care about saving the bees but they know few of them by name,” says Beatrice Olivastri, CEO, Friends of the Earth Canada. The national survey, from June, found that almost seven out of 10 Canadians were ‘concerned,” or ‘very concerned,” about the health of bees. “We hope people will volunteer to go out with our Census Cards and take photos of the bumble bees wherever they are—cottages, national parks or their own garden. By sending Friends of the Earth their photos and observations, they’ll be helping us learn more about what needs to happen to protect bumble bees.” Let’s help save the bees by doing this little task, if you see a bumble bee, take a picture of it and send it in. Take one photograph to be one step closer to saving the bees that benefit our society in a great big way.
