Hosted by the Riding Mountain PC Association, an evening of appreciation was held for former MLA Leanne Rowat at the Shoal Lake Community Centre. On hand to be part of the formalities was Premier Brian Pallister. Rowat’s service honoured in Shoal Lake submitted More than one hundred people gathered to celebrate the retirement of former MLA Leanne Rowat on Monday night. Rowat served our area as the Progressive Conservative MLA for the Minnedosa riding beginning in 2003 until the riding boundaries were redrawn in 2011. Hosted by the Riding Mountain PC Association, the evening of appreciation for Rowat at the Shoal Lake Community Centre included a speech from Premier Brian
Pallister, cocktails, dinner and speeches from friends and colleagues about her time as MLA. Rowat first forayed into provincial politics behind the scenes working as Special Assistant to the Minister of Education and Constituency Assistant to MLA Harold Gilleshammer. When Gilleshammer retired, she decided to run for his seat in the Minnedosa constituency and won a hard fought race during the 2003 election. At the time, Rowat and her husband Brad were liv-
ing in Souris with their two children Cameron, 8, and Mackenzie, 7. Justice Minister and close friend Heather Stefanson spoke about the huge role that Brad played in making it possible for Rowat to serve as MLA. Unlike Stefanson, who lives only 10 minutes from the Manitoba Legislative Building, having to travel almost three hours to Winnipeg each week and sacrifice time with her kids was a challenge Rowat faced head on. To justify this sacrifice, Rowat worked hard every
day that she spent in Winnipeg and proved herself as an advocate for all Manitobans. During her 13 years, she served as critic to portfolios including Culture, Heritage & Tourism; Aboriginal & Northern Affairs; Multiculturalism; Family Services; Status of Women; and Children and Youth Opportunity. Spending her whole MLA career in opposition did not stop Rowat from making an impact and passing four private members bills that gave grandparents rights to see their grandchil-
dren and created Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day on October 15 and Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month each May. Her private members bill passed in 2013 created the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Act was fully implemented by all regional health authorities this September. After speeches from her colleagues and former PC Association president Wilf Taylor, it was Rowat’s turn to speak. Her speech was about gratitude, with many people to thank individually

for all they did for her during this period of her life. Without her amazing support system at home of Brad, Cameron and Mackenzie, her parents Marion and Jack Kostuik and in-laws Joan and Don Rowat, this career choice would never have been possible. Rowat now resides at Lake of the Prairies with her husband Brad, where she will spend her retirement fishing, golfing and spending some much earned family time visiting her kids in BC and her sister in Texas.

Mother Teresa will be remembered as the tiny nun with love and compassion in her eyes as she held tiny babies in her arms and who worked until the end of her life helping the poorest people in India. I particularly like these thoughtful words of hers: “Everybody has something good inside them. Some hide it, some neglect it, but it is there!” That’s all for this week. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.
Souris boys excel at All-Star game
The AAA Bantam league held their League All-Star game in Winnipeg and the Southwest Bantams had three players selected to attend - Tyson Kozak, Landon Roberts, and Cory King. The game went to a shootout with Landon Roberts scoring the winner to make the final score 7 - 6. In the skills competition Tyson Kozak won the puck control contest and the breakaway shooting contest. Cory King got second in the rapid fire contest. It was an enjoyable day with some new friendships made. Southwest is currently in fourth place, two points behind Brandon with 10 league games remaining. My hopes of spending my holiday time reading were somewhat dashed. Instead of reading, I spent most of my time shoveling steps, blowing out the driveway, and clearing snow from the roof as, I suspect, did many of you. Hopefully we will now have a bit of a respite from all that and can return to more pleasant
tasks, and with that in mind I suggest the following books for your consideration. “Stranger,” by David Bergen, tells the story of Iso, a young Guatemalan woman who falls in love with the married but none-too-faithful doctor presiding over the fertility clinic where she works. Following a motorcycle accident, his wife takes him back to their home in the States, and shortly thereafter Iso discovers she is pregnant. The doctor’s wife discovers this
as well when she returns to the clinic for treatment herself, and seizes the child as soon as it is born, leaving Iso devastated. The remainder of the book relates Iso’s search for her child, a search that takes her through the illegal channels that spirit immigrants into the States. Locating the doctor, his wife, and the stolen infant, Iso sets about planning ways to re-take the child and return to Guatemala. The story isn’t bad but I found the characters rather onedimensional and many of
Storms continue to batter southwest Manitoba Classes were cancelled in many School Divisions and highways were closed across much of southwestern Manitoba once again as another storm pounded the Province on Thursday, January 12. The blowing snow advisory issued by Environment Canada which created blizzard-like conditions was replaced by an extreme cold warning with wind chills into the -40 to -45 Celcius range into Friday. Temperatures warmed up slightly by Sunday and warmer temperatures are on the way. Pictured: A Manitoba Highways Department snowplow hit the ditch during the blizzard on January 12 on Highway 250. the situations unrealistic. Bergen does describe the dangers faced by illegal immigrants well, if superficially. Overall, though, I’d have to say I consider this story just a so-so read. “The Spawning Grounds,” by Gail Anderson-Dargatz, was a book I considered several times before buying. It promised a strong thread of the supernatural and that almost never appeals to me. As it turned out, it didn’t this time either. At its heart is a polluted river and a contrast of cultures as Hannah and Alex, friends from childhood but steeped in different traditions, seek solutions that will save the salmon population. Added to the mix is Brandon, Hannah’s

brother, who apparently becomes possessed by a river spirit that previously claimed the life of their mother. The story describes differing cultural approaches to nature and does this fairly well, but I just could not buy into the premise of the river spirit and so never really became involved in the tale. If you don’t mind a touch of the mystical in your tales though, you might find this enjoyable. The best book I have read over the past several weeks was “Moonglow,” by David Chabon. It is written as a ‘non-fiction fiction’, relating the life of Chabon’s grandfather a man who rarely spoke of his life but on his deathbed shared his memories with his grandson. It is
difficult to adequately describe this story, let alone fathom which parts might be somewhat factual and which purely fiction. It takes us from WWII Germany to a POW camp to a Florida retirement village, with a brief stop in a US prison as well. It tells of a man consumed by his love of rocketry and of his wife and step-daughter; a man who killed his boss and spends time stalking a cat-eating python; a man who persevered, mostly with patience, in the face of mental illness, corruption, and failure – his own and that of others. It is at turns dark and funny, and left me wanting to read more – both more of this story and more from this author. I recommend it.

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, How can I brighten stainless steel cutlery to bring back the sparkle? Thanks. Sharon Dear Sharon, In commercial settings, it is very common to toss cutlery into a sink of plain old white vinegar, let soak and polish with a cloth or cut a potato in half and
sprinkle it with powdered laundry detergent, rub onto rust spots, rinse and dry. Doing this gets rid of water and rust spots. Bar Keepers Friend is another effective option. To make your own silver or stainless steel cleaner: Place crumpled aluminum foil in a pan or plastic bucket. Dissolve one quarter cup baking soda in enough hot water to

cover the cutlery. Place cutlery on foil and let stand for 5 minutes until the stains are gone. Rinse and polish dry. Dear Reena, What is the lowest sudsing laundry detergent for use in a top loading washing with an agitator? I also have a water softener. Sharon Dear Sharon,
Choose any HE detergent and you will have chosen a low sudsing detergent. Laundry detergent labelled HE produces fewer suds and is recommended for top and front loading machines. High Efficiency detergent is concentrated and less detergent is required thereby saving you money. HE detergent reduces the risk of mold growing

inside the machine; since less suds are produced. Most new washers use less water and when excess detergent is used it is not completely rinsed away which may shorten the life of textiles. Good Clean Fun Laundry Detergent Grate one Fels-Naptha bar soap. Boil 4 cups water into a pot. Switch stove temperature to low and add the grated soap. Stir until dissolved. Fill an ice cream bucket with 3 gallons of warm water; add one quarter cup Borax and one cup washing soda. Stir well; close lid and leave for 12 hours. The mixture will have lumps, stir before using (lumps dissolve in washing machine). Use one cup detergent per load. Dear Reena, How can I prevent rice from sticking to the pot while cooking and ending up with a ball of ‘glump’ (to use one of your words)? Thomas Dear Thomas, One way to prevent rice from sticking to the pot is to cook it in the microwave. For 1 cup of rice, add 2 cups of water. Season and cook in microwave on HIGH for 10-20 minutes. No sticky mess. If you prefer to cook rice on the stove: Rinse the rice before you boil it (until the water becomes fairly clear). Add a little oil or butter to the pot (rice in a pot should not be overcooked). Or boil your rice in lots of water and when done, just strain it through a sieve. Perfect rice every time. Feedback from Readers Re: Bedbugs With regards to Peter’s letter in a recent column, he can check out the
bedbug registry for online reports of hotel bed bug encounters: bedbugregistry.com. Jeannette Re: Cleaning paving stones I have very successfully used Dawn dish detergent to clean sidewalk stones. I dribbled it over the stains, added a very small amount of water and scrubbed it very well. I let it sit for half an hour and washed it off with the hose! Voila, a clean sidewalk! Nadine Bird feeder ideas • I save empty toilet paper rolls for birdfeeders. Smear the toilet paper roll with peanut butter and cover with birdseed. Hang them on trees outside. Submitted by Duncan • Repurpose empty plastic water bottles for birdfeeders. Cut holes on both sides of the bottle; fill the bottle with birdseed. Slide a wooden spoon through the middle for the birds to perch. Make the hole large enough for the birds to access the food inside the bottle. Submitted by Ladee • Instead of tossing out stale bread or bread ends; I smear them with peanut butter and bird seed. The birds eat the food in one afternoon.
