National Kids Cancer Ride passes through Souris
Riders taking part in the National Kids Cancer Ride stopped in Souris on September 12 for a bit of much needed rest and a delicious barbecue donated by the RM of Souris-Glenwood. In addition to the lunch, both the Municipality and the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce made donations to the cause. Pictured centre and waving to the cheering bystanders is Bruce Crooks, a paediatric haematologist/oncologist at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, NS. Crooks is spending 18 days riding with the team and raising money for the cause. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK
Committing to Kids Cancer Ride is an epic challenge by Darci Semeschuk The National Kids Cancer Ride passed through Souris on September 12 and were met with cheers and support from the RM of Souris-Glenwood and the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Darryl Jackson and members of Council were on hand to shake hands and offer best wishes along with a very much appreciated barbecue. The National Kids Cancer Ride is one of the biggest and most ambitious charity cycling events on behalf of childhood cancer in the world. Now in it’s 10th year the 2017 event is an inspirational 18 day adventure beginning in Vancouver on September 6 and finish in Halifax on September 23, 2017. Riding in relay style, the selected national riders will each cycle approximately 150 km and 220 kms per day on selected routes across Canada. The cyclists will raise millions of dollars on behalf of charities that improve the quality of life for children, and their families, living with and beyond cancer. As of 2016, the National Kids Cancer Ride has raised $44 million. Twenty eight different kids cancer initiatives were directly supported across Canada including: camps,
scholarships, work placement and educational support for survivors and kids in treatment, financial support for families with a child in treatment, parent patient advocates, parent support groups and resources. Ground breaking research, pediatric oncology fellowships, critical clinical trials and satellite clinics for children living at distance from care centres rounded out the list of support. The 2017 National Kids Cancer Ride is an emotional and inspirational journey for the riders. Bruce Crooks was one of the riders who stopped in Souris last week. Crooks is a paediatric haematologist/oncologist at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, NS since 2002, when he came to Canada from the UK, has devote his time and career to caring for kids and families suffering from cancer and rare blood diseases. “I see first hand the massive impact a cancer diagnosis has upon a child and their family. Life is never the same when you face a diagnosis and treatment as devastating as this can be,” explained Crooks. “Fortunately the vast majority of kids – 4 out of 5 – can be cured of their cancer. But that leaves 1 out of five, whose cancer will kill them. Even for those who do survive, there is a price; there are
challenges and obstacles from the late effects of the cancer and the treatments which can haunt them for years and decades to come. It’s obvious why I would ride and support the National Kids Cancer Ride – to help this mission, to share the dedication of those volunteers and riders who feel this as passionately as I do, and to help kids be kids again and families be families again. The choice to do it is easy. The riding and the fundraising – now that’s difficult.” Completing the National Kids Cancer Ride requires commitment to prepare, train and fundraise. As a rider, you’ll have your own reason for taking on this epic challenge: maybe it’s to honour a special child or maybe it’s your commitment to making a difference in the lives of kids with cancer. It’s a challenge to ride 160 to 225 km per day, for 18 days in a row. And yes, it’s a challenge to raise $15,000 in support of kids with cancer. Yet, since 2008, more than 200 riders have signed up, ridden the distance and raised the funds. The RM of Souris Glenwood and the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce presented cheques totally $400 to the ride organizers.

The Book Shelf
by Alexis MacLean Mysteries abound this week. The two most notable are Sue Grafton’s latest, “Y is for Yesterday”, and ‘The Silenced’, by Anders de la Motte. In ‘Y is for Yesterday’, Grafton gives us the latest instalment in the ‘alphabet’ series, featuring Kinsey Milhone. I haven’t read many of Grafton’s books so cannot speak to how similar, or otherwise, it is to its predecessors. I will confess, though, that I did not enjoy this book much. The central mystery involves
a sexual assault perpetrated on a classmate by four high school boys. The assault is filmed, but the film is stolen. When the individual who took it is subsequently found murdered, one of the boys turns state’s evidence, two are subsequently convicted, and the fourth goes missing. Ten years later, when one of the incarcerated boys is released, his family receives a ransom note, threatening release of the film, which could well result in re-incarceration. It’s at that point that Kinsey Milhone is hired and the search begins for both the film and the extor-
tionists. I had a number of problems with this book. It was far too long and rambling for starters. The crime itself was presented at the beginning of the story, but then is recreated in chapters more or less randomly tossed in throughout the rest of the story. I found these chapters completely pointless and needlessly graphic, and ultimately just started skipping them. Completely apart from this central mystery is a subplot, wherein a vicious sociopath (apparently from a previous story) once again stalks Kinsey and his ex-wives, trying to kill the lot. Apart from the fact that this entire storyline was unbelievable, there was no point to it. Finally, there are a great many ‘asides’ dealing with Kinsey’s neighbour Henry, and two homeless individuals he takes under his wing. Apart from the fact that they are involved in the ultimate resolution of one of the mysteries – something which itself requires suspension of all credulity - the long sections involving them are utterly pointless. Overall, I found the book boring and disorganized. Unless you are a die-hard Grafton fan, I would suggest you pass on this one. In contrast to the above, ‘The Silenced’ by Anders de la Motte, was very good. At least it was eventually. I admit to becoming very frustrated with it
initially as it switches characters, time frames and crimes repeatedly, often from paragraph to paragraph. It also refers back to crimes committed in a previous novel, which, if you have not read it, as I had not, leaves you feeling rather lost. However, I persevered and eventually really ‘got into’ the story, ultimately considering it one of the best mysteries I have read all year. The story begins with the discovery of a dismembered body. The efforts to identify the remains and capture the killer take us on a rather wild ride, involving the aftermath of a terrorist attack on members of the Intelligence Unit, corrupt politicians, contract killers, escaped crime bosses, and so much more. If it sounds multilayered, that’s because it is. But it also becomes totally absorbing. Spoiler alert – I found myself truly hoping that one of the ‘bad guys’ would survive and make good his escape. I won’t tell you who, or whether he did, but I was cheering for him, albeit somewhat guiltily. The book was tremendously annoying to start with, but I eventually enjoyed it so thoroughly that I have ordered de la Motte’s previous trilogy because, if they are anything like this book was, they will be good.

submitted Health Canada is taking the final steps toward a ban on the main source of artificial trans fats in Canadian diets. The Department says it is banning partially hydrogenated oils, or PHOs, which are the main source of industrially produced trans fats in all food sold in the country, including food prepared in restaurants. The oils are used in the production of pastries, other baked goods and some packaged goods as a means of extending shelf life. The ban will come into force on September 15, 2018, in order to give the food industry enough time to find suitable alternatives. After that date, it will be illegal to sell any food containing PHOs. Health Canada says trans fats raise levels of so-called “bad” or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the blood, while reducing levels of “good” or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Shingles and other trash dumped in Souris-Glenwood by Darci Semeschuk Several rural residents in the RM of Souris Glenwood are incensed that someone has been using a municipal road allowance between their farm fields as a dumping ground. Over the September long weekend, a very large pile of shingles, shingle wrappers and trash including fast food wrappers from Brandon restaurants, and even a pair of shoes were dumped on the edge of the Souris River near the landfill site. Residents called Public Works Manager, Andrew Hamilton approximately September 6 with the report of the illegal dumping. In addition to the call to Hamilton, the local residents filed a report with Brandon RCMP. Corporal Michael Boychuk stated that as far as an investigation goes, police are still investigating but crimes like this one are very difficult to solve. “You may have evidence pointing to a suspect but unless someone actually saw a person dumping the trash, it’s very difficult to prove. Short of a confession, there really is nothing we can do. Unfortunately that is true for many crimes.” Corporal Boychuk says that officers will look at the evidence once they receive it from the municipality. Since that time, a little “home investigating” turned up a receipt from J and G with a Brandon roofing companies name, shingle wraps that point to a sale from J and G in Brandon and other incriminating evidence pointing towards a suspect. “It is a huge pile of junk and completely unacceptable,” stated Hamilton.

What should be a beautiful overlook of the Souris River is now an eyesore since someone has been using a municipal road allowance between farm fields near Souris as a dumping ground. A very large pile of shingles, shingle wrappers and trash including fast food wrappers from Brandon restaurants, and even a pair of shoes was dumped on the edge of the Souris River and despite incriminating evidence found by the resident, no charges have been laid. PHOTO/SUBMITTED “We are waiting to see what the RCMP will do before proceeding with our own calls. Eventually, our Public Works people will clean up the mess.” Hamilton says that dumping fees are not that high so he doesn’t understand why a company would do this. The bylaw that is on the Souris Glenwood books carries a
fine of up to $2,000. Tim Oliver at Municipal Waste Management (MWM) has also seen the photos of the trash and he is disgusted by it. “For someone to do that, it’s just disgusting. “We have a great relationship with our Souris area contractors and none of them would do something
like this,” he remarked. “We also serve many other business people from other areas and this is the first time I’ve seen this.” Dumping fees at the MWM have remained stable for about six years but Continued on page 6

The Mark Humphries Orchestra Swings in Souris Souris District Arts Council is pleased to be bringing some top-notch musicians to Souris as the Mark Humphries Orchestra performs on Friday evening, September 29, at the SourisGlenwood Community Hall. In 2008, Mark, Jill, Thomas, and Jess Humphries moved from Doncaster, England to north of Kola, Manitoba on the Saskatchewan border, to raise cattle and sheep on what was once a PMU farm. Since then, they
have moved in ten greenhouses, acquired a variety of animals including zebras, lemurs, emus, miniature donkeys, horses, wallaroos, ostriches, parrots, pigs, lambs, mice, rabbits, fish, peacocks, pheasants, and swans, just to name a few, and started Westwood Ranch and Garden Centre. As if that wasn’t enough, Mark thought he would like to form a band in his spare time. “I joined the army as a musician in the U.K. – a
cheaper form of secondary education,” stated Humphries. “I then formed a band with former professional musicians. We were the only band working two to three times a week, doing stints for dancing at places like Masonic Halls. I also conducted a pit orchestra and toured with The Syd Lawrence Orchestra.” (This was UK’s premier Big Band.) “I toured with them as a spare player. That lasted until the late 1990’s. The

army makes you versatile. I went in with a trumpet and switched to trombone, which isn’t always easy. I regret not pushing myself on the piano,” said Humphries. Musical directing, as well as producing musical shows, were a large part of his early career. During the early 1990’s he would sometimes produce and direct up to seven shows a year. The Mark Humphries Orchestra was formed back in 1987 and toured the UK, until a big decision had to be made. “In 2008, we decided to sell our horse riding centre and fully licensed zoo and emigrate to Canada. For sentimental reasons, we decided to bring 1,000 plus music arrangements and equipment here, not expecting to use it again. We lived briefly in France but were impressed by Canada. We enjoy Canada and how it slows down in the winter months. I actually got back into the orchestra from a chance conversation with a good friend, Kent that worked at Ted Good’s Music, and he was part of a swing band in Brandon of mostly retired musicians,”
explained Humphries. “So I got my trumpet out and went to play for the Scotty McIntosh Big Band. I drove once a week to Brandon from Elkhorn. When Scotty McIntosh decided to retire, he approached me to take over. Because of family illness, the idea was shelved for 18 months. We then practically re-invented the orchestra, and musicians came from Brandon, Shilo, Reston, and Wawota to meet once a month in Virden at the Aud Theatre. For 12 months, it was strictly rehearsals. Our son, Thomas, works the lighting and sound-board; he started at a young age in the U.K. Our daughter, Jess, is the secretary and booking agent for the orchestra.” The 18-member swing orchestra is made up of 5 saxophones including alto, tenor, and baritone, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, the rhythm section - piano, bass, drums, guitar, as well as vocalists. Depending on the night, Mark may play anything from trombone to trumpet, or clarinet, and he may even do vocals. “Our show has integrated
with a bit of comedy,” continued Humphries. “I have been known to play a kitchen kettle when needed!” The gifts of music and comedy have opened many doors. “My father was a musician in the marines and later performed all over the U.K. using the alias Dick Van Winkle. The club circuit was busy in the U.K., and he also worked in TV and the movies, so I guess I followed in his footsteps, but I like to think of myself as a Jack of all trades,” said Humphries. If you would like to see and hear the Canadian version of The Mark Humphries Orchestra on September 29, you can find ticket information in the Coming Events section of this newspaper.
