Glenboro at 12:00 noon. This team is comprised of 12 girls who just signed up to play hockey! With a group of wonderful girls, parents and amazing coaches, they have been very successful!
Junior Jamboree, a great success submitted Thirty 13 and under curlers gathered on Louis Riel Day to enjoy some curling. The players were from Forrest, Rapid City, Brandon and Souris. The day started with a six-end game. All participants where put into teams
with the most experienced curlers acting as skips. There were also one or two coaches on each sheet. Following lunch, there was a hot shot competition. This involved playing draws, taps and hits, throwing just beyond the clos-
est hog line. The participants would then re-organized into new teams and played a four-end game. This was followed by a fun activity called the “Great Canadian Shootout”. After the on-ice activities, all curlers re-
ceived a trophy. These are recycled trophies. This year’s trophies were supplied by Betty Couling, a former Souris resident. A special thank you to all volunteers who made this such a fun event for the curlers. See photos on page 5

Jonathan Filewich is a Souris-based personal trainer and holds a degree in Physical Education. Meet Our Athlete Ashton Bell Ashton was born December 7, 1999, in Deloraine, MB, where she lives on a farm with her parents, Tony and Teresa, and two brothers, Tristan and Samuel. She is a Grade 12 student and has been on the honour roll since Grade 7. She will be attending the University of North Dakota and playing hockey in the fall of 2017 and will be enrolled in the Pre-Vet program Ashton’s hobbies include horseback riding, cattle branding, water sports, and swimming. She enjoys all sports but due to her extensive hockey schedule is limited to her involvement in other sports. She has played baseball, volleyball, and has been active in track & field all through school. During the summer, Ashton works as a swimming instructor/ lifeguard at the Deloraine Pool and Lake Metigoshe. How long has training been an important part of your life? • Ashton – Training has been an important part of my life since I began playing AAA Female Midget Hockey 4 years ago when I was 13 years old. How long have you been training with Outperforme Athletics? • Ashton - I have been training with Outperforme for 3 years now. Outperforme – Ashton committed when she had to rely on family and friends for transportation, but she was able to take all of the information and pushed her-
self to do her individualized programs in her home community. Do you have any specific long-term athletic and training goals? • Ashton – My longterm athletic goal is to go as far as I can with hockey with hopes of being part of the National Women’s Team and my training goal is to continue to improve on my strength and conditioning and my overall athletic ability. Outperforme – We believe in you! What is your most memorable accomplishment since joining Outperforme? • Ashton - My most memorable accomplishment since joining Outperforme would be making the U18 Team Canada Women’s Team 2 years in a row. Outperforme - Please correct us if we are wrong but were you not the captain both times?! What is your favourite exercise and why? • Ashton - My favourite exercise is TRX Abs because it’s a different way of doing an ab workout but is still challenging and effective. Outperforme – If you have the core stability foundation to do the exercises, they are a great progression. What is your least favourite exercise and why? • Ashton – My least favourite exercise is single leg squats with your back leg raised on the bench because it’s a leg burner. Outperforme – Exactly why you do them and most likely will continue to do them in the future! What is your favourite song to listen to before working out or competition? • Ashton – My favourite song to listen to before competition is “Not Afraid” by Eminem. How do you describe the concept of the Outperforme

Family to someone who hasn’t trained here before? • Ashton – The Outperforme Family is genuinely concerned about helping me improve as an athlete and reaching my athletic goals. They make me want to be better. If you are serious about becoming a more complete athlete I would definitely recommend you visit Outperforme Athletics. Outperforme – We genuinely care and started this for our athletes. It will always remain that way because of athletes like you. What does being part of the Outperforme Family mean to you? • Ashton - Being part of the Outperforme Family means that I am with people who want the same things that I do and are willing to do what it takes to help me achieve that and reach my goal. What is something you have learned since joining the Outperforme Family? • Ashton – Since joining the Outperforme Family, I have learned that anything is possible with a strong worth ethic, commitment and dedication. Personal training is needed if you want to advance to the next level in your sport. What is your most memorable Outperforme Training moment? • Ashton – My most memorable Outperforme Training Moment would have to be the Track Sessions because the environment is fun but yet you are still increasing your agility and stamina. Outperforme – The speed, agility, quickness (track) sessions have the ability to get a group of committed athletes together and push each other while keeping it fun. You always, and your Deloraine buddy, make it very interesting. Who is your favourite Outperforme Athlete to train with and why?
Jon Filewich is seen here with athlete Ashton Bell in this month’s Focus on Fitness. Bell hails from Deloraine and trains with Jon at Outperforme Athletics. A senior at Deloraine School, Bell plans to attend University of North Dakota and play hockey in the fall of 2017 and will be enrolled in the Pre-Vet Program. • Ashton – My favourite Outperforme Athlete to train with is Jonathan Filewich because he is so knowledgeable and is a great motivator; he pushes me to be better. He always has a great attitude and is such a great athlete himself. He has helped me to be a stronger, more complete athlete. Outperforme – We are happy to see the words “athlete” and “Jonathan” in the same sentence! It has been far too long. Do you have a favourite post-training meal or smoothie? • Ashton - My favourite post-training meal is usually
chicken and pasta. Outperforme – Ye olde staple. Bonus questions: If you could meet any celebrity alive or dead. Which one would it be and why? • Ashton – If I could meet a celebrity alive or dead it would have to be Michael Jackson because he was an amazing performer and singer who died much too young. He was a true icon in the music industry and his music continues to be popular to this day. What is your favourite book and why would you recommend it to others?
PHOTO/SUBMITTED
• Ashton - My favourite book is “Bobby Orr”. I would recommend it to any athlete because he tells us about the realities of making it in the NHL and the things you have to watch out for. He was such a great hockey player and was a great person all around and it was very interesting to read about his life. Outperforme – Adding it to our reading queue as we speak. What if your favourite movie and why? • Ashton - My favourite movie is “War Horse” because it’s a story about never giving up on something.

Some of the current executive members are looking to step down and new blood is needed in the organization. by Darci Semeschuk Emily Tuttosi of Souris has helped her team win the Canada West conference championship of the University sports season. The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Alberta Pandas 26-5 in the final game of the series, giving them both the tournament victory in Victoria as well as the overall Canada West women’s rugby sevens series. A few months after helping the University of Calgary Dinos take the 15s title and a national bronze medal, Tutossi helped guide the Dinos to the inaugural rugby sevens conference championship. Even though the series was only two tournaments long, the impact of a competitive sevens series in the Canada West conference will be felt for a long time.
2017 marks the first season of the Canada West Women’s Rugby Sevens Series, which has been made possible thanks to Canada West’s partnership with B2ten and Rugby Canada. Through their joint support, which will include scholarship opportunities for players at all six competing institutions, B2ten and Rugby Canada are committed to helping Canadian female athletes pursue their athletic careers, including an opportunity to progress to the national team. A standout in the sport of Rugby, Emily graduated from Souris Collegiate in 2013 to pursue a science degree in Calgary. She is now in her fourth year Kinesiology degree. She is the daughter of Trevor and Christie Tuttosi and Lorraine and Richard McKay.

Souris man, Murray Cameron, shares some curling tips with two Silvertip players.
PHOTOS/DEBBIE BUTLER
Souris Curling Rink host to WHL’s Silvertips Looking for a little down time, the Western Hockey League’s West Coast Everett Silvertips were in Souris February 9 for a little R & R. Coached by former Sourisite, Garry Davidson, who was nowhere in sight last Thursday, the players took to the ice like they were born to it - which isn’t such a surprise. Local curlers including Murray Cameron handed down some tips to the boys. Not exactly dressed for the sport of curling, the boys took it in stride and had a blast. Unfortunately, their match with the Brandon Wheat Kings on February 10 did not go their way and they dropped the game by a score of 2-1.
Tanner Butler named Boston Pizza Athlete of the Week
Tanner Butler is in his third year of an Open Studies degree at Red Deer College. He has been named Player of the Week for his outstanding defensive skills on the College hockey team. Butler had a great weekend on the ice for the RDC King hockey team. He provided leadership, played well defensively, helped lead the power play and scored a goal. The Kings picked up 4-of-4 points in the standings and Tanner played a large role. Friday, the RDC Kings defeated the Portage College Voyageurs 4-2 and Saturday the Kings won 6-2. Saturday Butler helped quarter back the power play to a 2-for-3 success rate and Tanner scored one goal with the man advantage. Tanner is a graduate of Souris Collegiate and is the son of Brock and Debbie Butler and the grandson of Jean Hunter.
