The Souris Sabre varsity girls basketball team wrapped up a stellar season with a silver medal finish at the AA Provincial Championships held last weekend in Boissevain. Sabres grab silver at Provincials submitted The Souris Sabres varsity girls basketball team saved their best basketball of the season for the Provincials last weekend in Boissevain. The ladies opened the tournament on Thursday taking on Goose Lake from Roblin. The Angles feature a young line up, with a 6’4 post player. Our ladies had a very strong start to the game as they ran out to an early 10-1 advantage. The team would continue their strong play as they rolled to a 67-50 victory. Tanja

Gohl had 16 points to lead all scorers, while Aly Kowalchuk added 15. Lisa Gohl chipped in with 11 points and 4 assists. With a shot at the finals on the line Friday, the Sabres simply played their most complete and inspired game of the entire season. The ladies took on the Morris Mavericks in the semi-final and from the opening tip they showed they meant business. The team played a smothering defense, holding Morris to only 19 second-half points as the girls punched their

ticket to their second consecutive gold medal game winning 72-47. Aly showed why she is a player of the year candidate as she poured in a career high 37 points, including shooting 6/9 from the 3pt line. She also added 8 rebounds and 7 steals in the game. Kendra Roberts, playing in her first game action of the season, added 10 points and 7 rebounds and Tanja put up 9 points. On Saturday, the ladies faced the Gimli Lakers in the championship game. The Lak-

ers feature a huge line up with two players over 6 feet tall. The game was a classic as both teams traded the lead several times through the first three quarters. Our girls showed so much toughness throughout the game, picking themselves up off the floor several times and continuing to battle. In the end they would fall just short of the repeat as they fell 69-60 claiming a silver medal. Aly was again superb for the Sabres. In her final high school game as a Sabre, she again led all scores

with 33 points and added 7 rebounds. Tanja added 12 points and 7 rebounds and Parker Janz had 4 points and 10 rebounds in the game. For their outstanding play over the three days, Aly and Tanja were named to the Provincial All-star team! It was a fantastic finish to an incredible season for the team. The ladies would like to thank all the family, students, staff, and community members who made the trek to Boissevain. It was awesome to see the stands full of Sabre blue and black!

History of the Deleau Community Women’s Group Compiled by Florence Robson & Lucy Ramsey There had always been a Women’s Group in the Deleau area until Bethel Church closed Sunday worship in 1965 and the Bethel United Church Women’s Group disbanded. The need for a local organization was recognized when Franklin McDowell approached Lucy Ramsey with a question, “Did she think the local ladies would serve lunch for his sale September 29, 1967?” He wanted the profit to remain in the community. Lucy contacted the community ladies telling them of a request to serve lunch at the McDowell sale. She invited the ladies to come to her home September 5, 1967. Those joining Lucy were Gertrude Logoet, Ada Walker, Janet Robson, Bea Robson, Roween Kenward, Audrey Jasper, Annette Robson, Naomi Jasper. That was the beginning of the Deleau Community Women’s Group. Lucy chaired the meeting and Naomi agreed to be secretary treasurer. The

ladies discussed whether or not to organize. They agreed to serve the lunch and set up a temporary committee representative of the area and to meet later in the fall to consider a permanent committee. The first lunch served by the Deleau Community Women’s Group was ham sandwiches for .25¢; egg sandwiches were .20¢; pie was .10¢ and tea and coffee .10¢. We asked for donations of pies, eggs and cream but everything else was purchased. The first lunch sale had receipts of $87.68 and a profit of $48.38! The next meeting was November 5, 1967, with nine ladies present. The group made the decision that is wasn’t necessary to organization but they would always be prepared to work on any community project offered. Seven ladies attended the February 13, 1968 meeting. The Deleau Curling Club asked if the Women’s Group would serve bonspiel lunches the week of February 19. Detailed

PUBLIC NOTICE

REGARDING THE 2017 FINANCIAL PLAN PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given pursuant to subsection 162(2) of the Municipal Act that the Council of the Municipality of Grassland intends to present its financial plan for the fiscal year 2017 at a Public Hearing at the Elgin Hall in Elgin, Manitoba on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Council will hear any person who wishes to make a presentation, ask questions, or register an objection to the financial plan, as provided.

by Darci Semeschuk Souris and Glenwood Chamber of Commerce held their annual general meeting on March 15 at Murphy’s Irish Pub. On the agenda was the election of officers. Bonnie Radcliffe will assume the role of president; Sande Denbow will remain as secretary; Kim Dekoning will remain as treasurer and the position of vice -president is vacant. The executive will continue to search for a volunteer to fill that position.

The Chamber is strong with 67 members, a very healthy number. This is a great accomplishment for Souris when taking under consideration communities like Melita had folded their Chamber of Commerce due to lack of attendance on members part. It has since reorganized. “We are thrilled to have so many loyal members who help us keep our Chamber strong,” remarked newly minted Radcliffe who moved up to the position of president after

her term as vice. “This allows us to continue to serve the community and our businesses by planning major events and being their voice on committees such as the CDC, Canada 150 and others. We are also very grateful to the Municipality of Souris Glenwood for the grant that helps keep us funded along with our memberships.” In fact, Municipality of Souris Glenwood gives a grant in the amount of $5,000 a year to the Chamber and that amount, along

with membership fees makes it possible for the Chamber to take a leadership role in planning events and have a very strong role on various committees. They plan the Spring Fling – Town Wide Yard Sales, are sponsoring children’s activities at the Canada Day festivities, will organize the Scarecrow Weekend as well as a Christmas Campaign in 2017. They are also the business voice for the community and with the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a major stakeholder in the Community Development Corporation and has two representatives on that committee. They will also join the committee that is planning the campground expansion. A representative to sit on that board is currently being sought by the Chamber. The big change at the meeting and going forward is that the Chamber is combining their two monthly meetings into a single meeting to cover both the open meeting and the executive meeting. Low attendance at the meetings has made the executive examine why numbers are low and they have decided that with the busy schedule that is most people’s lives, two meetings a month could be too much. With the meetings combined, this makes it so that there is only one meeting, the third Thursday of each month at noon. The next Chamber meeting will be April 20 at the Sunflower Tea House.w

The CPR section bunk house was moved to the park and converted into a cookhouse and booth. There were many suggestions by the ladies given to the handymen on how to make it into a convenient work space! Sometime later, a larger outdoor booth was added to the side of the cookhouse. Over the last 50 years, this women’s group has raised money for maintenance of the park, play-

They would also support the park, ball diamonds, and other agencies as required. While they did not sponsor showers, they did try and see that the young people were honoured by their neighbours. The easy way for the Group to get lunch variety was to use the CP rail line going through the community. Families living north of the rail line brought cake and dainties while families living south of the rails brought sandwiches. This

Power of the People to make change Page 4, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, March 24, 2017

by Darci Semeschuk It sounds like a line from the sixties but it rings true even today. It’s time for people to take a stand, stop sitting on your hands and accepting things as status quo. I’m talking about Canadian Blood Services (CBS) decision to close the Brandon office and along with that all eleven rural mobile clinics. These clinics, including Souris, were responsible for 2,900 hundred donations a year according to CBS. Follow that with an additional 2,100 from Brandon and

you have 5,000 blood donations. Image that number and try to picture CBS making that up in Winnipeg. According to CBS we only meet 75-85% of that goal which to me doesn’t seem too bad. Their response - to close the clinics instead of working harder to meet that goal is ludicrous - at least in my opinion. Next - who isn’t meeting the target? Is it rural people or is it the City of Brandon? What are those numbers because I happen to know that Souris, at least, was a very busy clinic?

You have probably high paid staff members that are responsible for donor relations. Work harder - if you aren’t meeting your targets, talk to local media – send out challenges to communities to come up with more people, do something. Rural Manitoba always rises to a challenge. Don’t just shut us down effectively sending the message that we just don’t matter. Do a better job. It’s kind of vague to me - are they losing money? How much? That’s something they haven’t

by Darci Semeschuk More questions than answers have arisen since the announcement from Canadian Blood Services (CBS) that, as of mid-June, 2017, they would be closing the Brandon collection site, which includes the mobile units that service southern Manitoba. These include mobile clinics in Dauphin, Deloraine, Erickson, Glenboro, Hamiota, Killarney, Minnedosa, Neepawa, Souris, Virden, and Boissevain, which collect a combined 2,900 units of blood per year. The balance of the 5,000 units that was set as a goal come from Brandon. CBS says that the clinic has only been meeting 75-85% of that goal and as such, the decision was made to shut it down. Additionally, 17 staff members will be affected by the closure. CBS say they will replace the clinics with a mobile clinic that will travel from Winnipeg to Brandon to an as yet undetermined location. The clinic will be held on two Thursdays a month and be four hours in length. They encourage all rural donors to attend this replacement clinic. Mike Choi, Territory Manager, Donor Relations Prairies, and Northwest Territories notified Souris Complex manager Heiko Zinn, in a letter dated March 14, that the final clinic in Souris would be

held May 16. “At this time I want to formally inform you that after careful consideration we will be discontinuing all Westman mobile clinics, including the Souris community blood donor clinic. The last clinic taking place in Souris will be on May 16, 2017,” wrote Choi. “This decision was made after a thorough analysis of clinics in the region and is based on a number of factors including blood collection results, operational costs, the distance to the nearest production site, all of which are evaluated in order to deliver greater efficiencies.” Choi went on the explain that CBS does not expect the changes to affect their ability to provide a safe, secure blood supply for hospital patients in the community and across Manitoba. “I understand that this closure will be disappointing for many of our dedicated donors, partners and volunteers in the community. We will be encouraging donors in Souris to donate at our twice a month mobile clinic in Brandon or at any of our clinics across Canada when there is opportunity to do so,” he suggested. “We hope to have a celebration at the clinic on May 16 to thank the community.” According to Heiko Zinn, CBS held 4-6 clinics per year in Souris. As for attendance, Zinn says that

didn’t seem to be a problem here. “I believe it (the clinic) was well attended from what I observed when they were at the Hall,” stated Zinn. “Every pint of blood matters - now people have to go to Brandon when they should be even going to peoples homes to get the blood (just my opinion).” Cliff Cullen, MLA for Spruce Woods Constituency had this to say about the closure. “While disappointing, I am sure this was not a decision that Canadian Blood Services made lightly. Blood donations make a tremendous difference for many people, as they are used to treat life-threatening conditions,” he wrote. “Canadian Blood Services works hard to make sure their services are provided efficiently, in a coordinated way, and the decision to close the clinic was made by CBS itself, the province only provides funding. Any further questions should be directed to CBS, as the provincial government had no say in the closure.” In fact, CBS states on its website that they receive funding from provincial, territorial and federal governments. Larry Maguire is a former Elgin resident, now MP for Brandon Souris, and he was very disappointed to hear of the closure. “It was not that long ago that I par-

announced and that money comes from taxpayers anyway. Let the ones funding you know where the shortfall is. CBS says they will run a mobile clinic out of Winnipeg. They’ll travel to Brandon two Thursdays a month for four hours each time. That’s going to be cost prohibitive. They aren’t saying what those hours will be or where the clinic will be held but they expect rural people to travel to the city to continue making their donations. As busy as the Souris clinic was, how do

they expect to fit everyone who may wish to come in those few short hours? I don’t believe they expect – or care – if rural people travel in. They can manage without us. This is just another slap in the face to rural Manitoba. Looking at CBS website the national blood supply chart indicates that when supply is below 8 day, donations are critical. Every blood type, with the exception of AB positive is well below 8 days. B positive sits at just one day. To me these are critical num-

bers. Closing down clinics that bring in 5,000 donations a year is not smart – unless you simply don’t care and want to spend your budget elsewhere. Good luck making up those numbers in Winnipeg. Speaking to our local MLA and MP, I was encouraged to motivate people to write in a letter to CBS protesting the closure. If you feel strongly that CBS reverse their decision, please send an email to feedback@blood.ca Stand up for rural Manitoba.

Canadian Blood Services is closing the Brandon collection site along with 11 rural location including Souris, Virden, and Deloraine. This will force donors to travel to Brandon to a scheduled four hour clinic that will be held two Thursdays a month, if they wish to continue donating blood. We have more snow I think, than we had the last two years! There are lots of snow banks around. The town boys are busy plowing it and getting it hauled away as fast as they can. Some words to think

about: • Sometimes it seems like the road to the future is always under construction! • Each day is a page of life turn it with care! • Do not forget little kindnesses and do not remember small faults. Age and Opportunity from Winnipeg were out February 24, talking about safety in your homes and safety at ATMs, frauds, scams, and identity theft, as well as other good information to help protect yourself from falls and thieves. It was very informative. Those who came got some good information. Mostly I think it is geared more to private homes and apartments, but lots of information to help us all try and stay safer. I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. Opening a window for a while each day is a good way to get the stale air out and you will feel better with some fresh air, too. With all the colds and flu going around, you’ll want to let the nasty germs out to freeze. That’s all for this week. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.
