Souris Minor Ball hits it out of the park! By Darci Semeschuk The Souris Minor Ball Association has hit a home run in their quest to complete fundraising for the expansion to Diamond 4 and are on their way to Project Diamond 3 thanks to a final donation from Western Financial Group. The fundraising campaign, which had a lofty goal of raising $34,000.00, began in the fall of 2016. Ac-
cording to Minor Ball president, Loretta Turner, the campaign began with two small barbecues and quickly grew to a community project. They have now raised over $40,000.00, meeting and exceeding their goal. We started a very large project, and now, just over a year later, I am happy to announce that our fundraising goal has been met - at over $40,000.” Stated Turner on the Minor
Ball Facebook page. “And the physical project of building a new diamond, The Richardson Pioneer Diamond, is almost complete too.” The Souris Minor Ball Community held four fundraisers where they raised $7,700.00. Grant applications awarded the project were over $16,000, and the remainder has come Continued on Page 3

Please take note; we do need some drivers who don’t mind driving to Winnipeg for doctor appointments. Please come and see us if you would be able to help us out in this way. It’s never very often, but it usually pretty last minute we get the calls, so if you could come in and register with us, we’d be all set to call you as needed. Operation Christmas Child box number low in Souris, up in region By Darci Semeschuk The annual Operation Christmas Child Shoebox campaign has wrapped up in Souris for another year. In total, only fifty-five boxes were collected between the community and Souris School according to local Operation Christmas Child director, Karen Fraser. “We are pleased to receive the fifty-five boxes from Souris,” stated Fraser. “While some people might worry that the number is low, we are actually up across my region.” In fact, 386 boxes were collected between Boissevain, Souris and Minto, up 40 from 2016. “Sometimes the number of boxes in a community goes up and down depending on the year,” Fraser remarked. “We may have high numbers from a re-
gion one year and low another.” Fraser also says that while she has no number until March, online orders could be the reason that numbers are lower in some communities. Fifty-five boxes from Sours is a huge disappointment to local organizers. Carol Turner has worked on this particular campaign for many years and she remembers when there were 275 boxes collected in Souris alone. “I don’t know why the number is so low from Souris,’ she said. “I would like to see more but maybe it’s a sign of the times.” While the collection date has passed, you can still be part of Operation Christmas Child by going online and fill a shoebox at packabox.ca

Continued from Page 1 from donations from businesses, organizations, groups, families and personal. The final donation towards the project, a compilation of projects through the Western Financial Group’s (WFG) Western Communities Foundation has resulted in a donation of $2423.85. This is a result of half the proceeds, $966.75 from their annual “Support The Cause Day” held in May and the balance, $957.10 and $500.00 from WFG’s Matching Grant Program. “The Souris Minor Ball board is overwhelmed with the support we received, and thank everyone who supported us,” stated Turner in closing remarks on her November 3 post. The Association is well on their way to their next goal, upgrades to Diamond 3. The old fence is down and a new one is up!

Christmas Cheer boxes out in community Christmas is coming and the Souris Christmas Cheer Board has had their first meeting of the 2017 season. The board consists of representatives from St. Mary’s, St. Luke’s, St. Paul’s, Souris Gospel Chapel and Faith Community Baptist Church as well as members from the community at large. There are families in our community who need our help at this time of year. Unemployment, illness, low income and loneliness all contribute to hardships some face at Christmas. The Christmas Cheer Board tries to make even just one day a little brighter for families and individuals in our community. The Christmas Cheer Board delivered fifty-five hampers last year. Donations of food, clothing, and toys are gratefully accepted. Donations of money can be dropped off at the town office and a charitable donation receipt will be issued. Monetary donations are used to buy turkeys, grocery items, fresh produce and gifts. Bev Sobry’s Grade 8 class helps us by wrapping the hamper boxes in Christmas paper. We appreciate the effort of these students in making the hampers look festive. Collection boxes will be placed in all the above mentioned churches as well as the Legion Clubroom, the Souris Health Centre, Bigway, Murphy’s and LT’s Corner Store after November 11. A typical hamper includes everything a family would need for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Christmas day, as well as some extras. Donation suggestions include non-perishable food, boxed chocolates and candy, breakfast cereal, cookies, pickles and juice. The hamper will include gifts for every member of

the household. We ask that toys and children’s clothing be new and unwrapped. We provide for children and adults of all ages so any gift will be appreciated. Knitted mitts and hats are very welcome donations. Gifts for men and teens are often in short supply. Christmas Trees will be placed at Woodfire Deli, Royal Bank, Westoba Credit Union, Western Financial and Lagasse’s Studio of Fine Arts. On December 1st, tags (indicating the gender, age (if it is a child and a couple of gift suggestions for that person) will be placed on these trees. You can choose a tag(s) from any of these trees to purchase a gift(s). Once you have made your purchase, return the unwrapped gift with the tag by December 15 to any of the businesses displaying a Christmas Cheer Tree. A group or individual may wish to sponsor a family and look after making up their own personalized hamper for that family. Contact the Cheer Board and we can provide you with the information needed to put together a hamper for a specific family. The response in past years has been overwhelming. The board is hoping for continued support from the citizens of Souris and surrounding area. The Souris Christmas Cheer provides hampers for the Municipality of SourisGlenwood, and the villages of Carroll and Elgin. If you have any questions or concerns about Christmas Cheer or know a family in need you can contact Margaret Bond (Board Chair) at 204-483-7318 or 204-483-0180. The hampers will be distributed this year on Friday, December 22. Sincerely, The Souris Christmas Cheer Board
