Souris gearing up for epic Canada 150 Page 2, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, May 26, 2017
By Darci Semeschuk Preparations for an epic Canada 150 don’t happen overnight. The committee in charge of the 2017 celebration has been working at this project since last year. A committee was formed, grant applications were filed, and details were arranged and will culminate in what is sure to be a tremendous occasion in Souris. According to Mayor Darryl Jackson, there’s quite a bit of fun coming our way. “The timing has worked out pretty good with Canada Day falling on a Saturday this year,” he said. “We kick off the weekend with a party in the “bowl” at Victoria Park followed by our fabulous fireworks.” In fact, the band Swamp Gas is slated to perform on Friday night. Swamp Gas is a Neepawa-based band formed in 2003. They play acoustic folk, Irish, and East Coast music. Their playlist consists of toe tapping traditional tunes, old familiar sing-a-long favourites, and contemporary numbers full of lively energy. While celebrations of such an auspicious occasion as the country’s 150th birthday don’t come cheap, Mayor Jackson says they have had a little help with the expenses. “We did receive a grant of $4000 towards our expenses and the municipality has set aside $10,000 to help make this a great weekend,” he ex-
plained. “You just don’t let something like Canada Day 150 go by with some celebrations.” In addition to the music in the park by Swamp Gas, Friday will also feature a meat draw at the Souris Legion. Saturday, July 1 is a full day in Souris. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce has committed to sharing the cost of children’s entertainment in conjunction with the Souris Recreation Department. There will be lots of fun activities for the kids to take part in the entire day beginning with Motion Zone. There are separate times for younger children and older children. Fit Kids Healthy Kids is a free play zone with awesome equipment and games supervised by staff where kids get active in an unstructured free play setting. Other kids activities include a bounce house, basketball jump and more. There’s fun for the adults as well. The community is holding a beardgrowing contest. Individuals can take part in the fun despite the length, or lack of, their beard. Just register the day of and take part in the fun. “We didn’t plan anything formal,” explained Mayor Jackson. “It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been growing your beard. Just come out and be judged.” There will be a beer gardens on Saturday from

3:00 – 11:00 p.m. This is the Pub in the Park, hosted by Murphy’s Irish Pub. The outdoor stage will feature a selection of entertainers on Saturday including Corey Francius, Ross Roteliuk and J4K. Hillcrest Museum is celebrating fifty years as a tourist attraction in Souris. They are having a celebration in conjunction with Canada’s 150th on Sunday, July 2. “We are inviting everyone out to Hillcrest at 2:00 p.m. for cake and iced tea on the grounds,” explained Jackie Kirkup, museum chairman. “We have a small program planned and hope as many people as possible come out and enjoy the event.” One special item on the agenda is the opening of a “time capsule” that was created fifty years ago by the first museum board. Two of those board members were Jean Dornian and Jean Diehl. While Mayor Jackson explained that holding an opening ceremony for Canada Day 150 would be difficult, the committee instead chose to hold a closing ceremony. This will happen at Hillcrest Museum on Sunday after the opening of the time capsule. The Souris Campground is fairly booked for the weekend and organizers believe that a campsite will be a scarce commodity come June 30. If you’re planning to enjoy the pool and campground, you’d better get your spot as soon as possible. Canada Day 150 will be an event to remember so plan on being in Souris for the weekend.

Road work season underway
Like a blacksmith who strikes when the iron is hot, the construction crew has a tight window of their own when it comes to road repairs. Summers in Manitoba are all about getting to and fixing potholes, pipes, and the odd sunken manhole. 100-year Celebration of St. Paul’s United Church Casavant Pipe Organ No. 727 submitted On Sunday, May 14 St. Paul’s United Church celebrated the 100-year anniversary of their Casavant Freres pipe organ. The organ has had extensive restoration, voicing, and tuning done over the last eight years by organ technician Bill Thurmeier of Saskatoon. Many pipes had to be replaced, repaired, and carefully voiced along with the reconnection of the set of tubular chimes that originally were part of the organ. To celebrate the restoration of the pipe organ a church committee of seven people planned a special concert, featuring a guest organist, Don Menzies from Winnipeg, to perform. A Trip of a Lifetime
Page 4, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, May 26, 2017
Part 1 – May 26 By Don Oddie Editor’s note: The following is a timeline into a trip taken by Don Oddie, former pastor with Faith Community Baptist Church in Souris. He spent sixteen days visiting historically significant religious areas in Israel and, at the request of the Plaindealer, agreed to share his experiences with our readers. We have decided to spread his story out over three weeks. This is part one - Enjoy! Trip of a lifetime! What might that look like for you? This is my story. I had resigned my position as pastor at Faith Community Baptist Church effective December 31, 2016 and began an extended time of sabbatical January 1, 2017. On January 14, I left for Winnipeg and at 10:35 in the morning, January 15 I flew to Toronto and then direct to Tel Aviv, Israel. Why Israel you ask? I have been a pastor for 27 years and a Bible teacher for 36 years. Israel is where the story all happens and continues to happen today. I went on an educational tour with Bridges for Peace, a Christian group based in Israel but with offices in eight

other countries around the world, Canada being one. This trip, for me, what a life-changing experience. Monday, January 16 – Day 1 I only knew one other member of our group, Reverend Don James from Winnipeg, who is also the National Development Director for Bridges. There were 19 altogether from right across Canada. Upon our arrival in Tel Aviv we met four other members of our group from Zimbabwe and Isaac our Israeli tour guide. We went through customs, claimed our lug-
gage, loaded on the bus, and immediately headed for our first stop on the tour the Seaport of Joppa (Jaffia) just south of Tel Aviv. Joppa is one of the oldest if not the oldest seaport in the world. A number of biblical events happen here. This is the place where the Cedars of Lebanon where unloaded for transport to Jerusalem for the building of Solomon’s temple. Here too, was where the prophet Jonah tried to catch a boat to try to run away from God only to be swallowed by a large fish. Many of you will know the story.
There is a statue of the fish there to commemorate the event! Following our visit there we headed north to the seaside city of Netanya to check into our hotel for the first night. Tuesday, January 17 – Day 2 Today we followed the “via maris,” the highway north along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, making our first stop at Caesarea. Here, Herrod had his summer palace at this ancient Roman seaport, and here, Pontius Pilate, the one who condemned Jesus to death, had his base. Many of the original ruins have been uncovered including an incredible theatre and a great velodrome where crowds would gather to watch chariot races which, apparently, were much more violent than Hollywood has pictured. According to our guide there was only one winner left standing at the end. He really brought the history to life. Many incredAncient Canaanite Gate, Tel Dan, dates back approximately 4,000 years to the time of ible things Abraham. excavated here including the inner harbour where the apostle Paul likely left Rome on his final journey. We travelled farther north, through a Druze town to Mount Carmel, the site of the prophet Elijah’s great confrontation with the 450 profits of Baal. We were very close here to the modern city of Haifa. Our next stop was Tel Megiddo, which is the Hebrew word for Armageddon, the place where many historic battles were fought because of its strategic location and where many believe the last great battle is to be fought. The word Tel simply means “mound,” as historically, cities were built on the ruins of previous cities. This was one of Solomon’s famous chariot cities; built to protect his kingdom from northern invaders and much excavation continues today uncovering more and more history. Finally we arrived at Nof Ginnosar, originally a kibbutz, but now a tourist hotel on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, our home for the next three nights. Wednesday, January 18 – Day 3 We began our day with a visit to the Bridges for Peace assistant centre at Karmiel, in the north of Israel not far from the border with Lebanon. Karmiel is 60% Russian speaking, home for many Jews who have come home, (made Aliyah) to Israel from Russia and surrounding areas. Bridges feeds about 22,000 people a month and helps them to settle in Israel, as immigrants must first learn Hebrew to be able to work in Israel. We had lunch in Tiberias then enjoy the boat ride on the Sea of Galilee where Jesus’ first disciples made their living as fisherman. That afternoon we headed up to the north shore. Here we learned that 80% of Jesus’ ministry took place within a one-hour walk of Capernaum, where He made His home. Our first stop was at Tabgha where
a sign listed the number of Jesus’ miracles that happened there, including the feeding of the 5000 and the 4000 and walking on the water. Then we headed up to the top of the Mount to the traditional side of the Sermon on the Mount, and today home to a large Catholic Church and Retreat Centre. Next stop was Capernaum where a large sign declared that this was the home of Jesus for the three – three and one-half years of His ministry. Today there is a Greek Orthodox Church, a Franciscan Monastery, and the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter, where Jesus would have lived. We sat in the ruins of a synagogue that was built over the ruins of a synagogue where Jesus would likely have taught. Today we walked in the footsteps of Jesus. Most memorable! Thursday, January 19 – Day 4 We followed the Hula Valley into Upper Galilee, beginning with a visit to Hazor, where excavations are giving a glimpse of over 5,000 years of civilizations! Many Old Testament stories happened here and Solomon rebuilt the city in the tenth century B.C. Our next stop was Tel Dan, now a national park but biblically the place were King Jeroboam I erected one of two golden calves, leading the 10 northern tribes into idolatry, following the reign of Solomon. Following the path around to the far side of the park, we stood at an on-going excavation of an ancient Canaanite city where, we were told, Abraham likely entered the city after liberating his nephew, Lot. What an incredibly humbling experience for me. We went from Caesarea Philippi, to the source of the Dan River and the grotto to the Roman God Pan. Nearby was a very large cave that went into the hillside and down out of site. Continued on Page A7

Maguire urges Liberals to drop idea to eliminate farmers’ cash ticket deferrals
Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, May 26, 2017
submitted Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, rose in the House of Commons during question period to urge the Liberal government to drop any plan that would eliminate farmers’ ability to defer cash purchase tickets to the following tax year. However, in response to Maguire’s question, the Liberal Minister completely avoided the question and did not even acknowledge the issue in his answer. The idea to eliminate farmers’ ability to defer
cash purchase tickets to the following tax year was first floated in the Liberal’s recent budget and has been roundly criticized from westman farmers, and farm groups, including the Keystone Agricultural Producers. Numerous farmers from westman have already written the Liberal government asking them not to proceed and Maguire is encouraging every farmer to follow suit. “It’s seeding season for farmers and they don’t have time to worry about Liberal politicians in Ot-
tawa thinking up ways to make them less profitable,” said Maguire. “If the Trudeau Liberals eliminate the ability for farmers to defer cash tickets, it could be financially disastrous for many westman families.” The current cash purchase ticket system helps farmers to stabilize income from year to year to ensure the long term sustainability of their operations. For example, a farmer could have a bumper crop one year, and a drought the next. The current system allows for some flexibil-
ity in dealing with these fluctuations by preparing for things outside of their control and filing taxes accordingly. If farmers can no longer defer cash tickets for their crops, it will limit their ability to cash manage their income and operating expenses. The Liberals are currently holding consultations with farmers regarding the government’s proposal to eliminate the provision that allows farmers to defer cash ticket purchases of listed grains to the subsequent tax year. The consultations are only
from now until May 24. In response to the timing of the consultations, Maguire said, “Either the Liberals are so unaware of when farmers are busy seeding or they are intentionally doing this when they know farmers are more focussed on getting their crop into the ground earning a living than dealing with harmful government proposals.” Since the Liberal government announced they were looking at eliminating the possibility to defer cash tickets, Maguire’s office has been contacted
by several dozen westman farmers who are deeply concerned about this change in policy. Many stated that they feel they are being abandoned by the Liberals and this change would handicap their ability to deal with factors outside of their control. Maguire concluded, “I will continue to stand up for westman farm families in the House of Commons. I will fight the Liberals every step of the way until they drop their destructive plan and stop threatening the livelihoods of hardworking farm families.”
By: Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I am not only getting tired of replacing numerous plug-in air fresheners around my home, but it is also becoming expensive. Do you have a recipe for homemade air fresheners? Thanks, in advance. Ruth Dear Ruth, Here is a very simple air freshener that you can make yourself. In a spray bottle, mix half cup rubbing alcohol, one cup water and ten drops lemon essential oil. Spray room as needed. You can even add a few drops of this recipe to your vacuum bag. Also, placing sprigs of eucalyptus around your home will leave you with a nice aroma. Or put a bowl of vanilla in rooms that need freshening. Another option is to purchase a catalytic lamp, although a little pricey, it should last for many years. These fragrance lamps are said to actually purify the air, eliminate unpleasant odors and leave behind wonderful fragrances that will fill your home or office. One more solution, I love the smell of beeswax
candles, what a wonderful scent when lit. This is another great way to make a room smell nice without adding a bunch of unhealthy toxins into the air. Dear Reena, Is using vegetable oil on new butcher block a good idea? Or do I need to pick up some mineral oil or something like that? Thanks, Max Dear Max, For everyday cleaning, wipe butcher block with dish soap and water. Rinse with water. To sanitize butcher block, combine 1 part white vinegar into a spray bottle with 4 parts water. Spray and leave for 10 mins. wipe. When the time comes to oil butcher block, food grade mineral oil is recommended. This prevents wood from smelling rancid over time. Butcher block is beautiful and durable, and can last for many years, if cared for properly. Why didn’t I think of that! • Whenever I go to the beach or head on vacation, I roll my bills into an empty lip balm tube. I

My clothes end up smelling like lavender which helps repel mosquitoes. After the sponge is dry, I place it back into the fabric softener until the next time I need it. Oddie’s trip of a lifetime Continued from Page A4 A sign identified this cave as the “gates of Hades,” a location where, biblically, Peter identified Jesus as the Messiah. From there we travelled up to the Golan Heights, not a highway for the faint of heart, to Mount Bental, an area taken from Syria in the 1967 war. The trenches where the Syrians used to shoot rockets down onto Jewish towns are still there and today there is a UN observation post. Some of our group actually spoke to soldiers on duty there. On the way home we visited Olea Essence, perhaps the largest olive oil manufacturing facility in Israel where we were introduced to the many products produced from olives and many of our people bought a number of things to bring home. Friday, January 20 – Day 5 We left Nof Ginnosar (would love to go back there!) and travelled down the Jordan valley to Jerusalem, our home for the next five nights. One the way we made a visit to Nazareth, to a place in the middle of the modern city called “Nazareth Village,” a recreation of a typical village of Jesus’ day. It was a most interesting village where we saw an actual olive press like what would have been used

at the time of Jesus. Cana, the place of Jesus’ first miracle recorded in the Bible, is today a suburb of Nazareth. Next we came to Bet Sh’ean, the largest archaeological dig in all of Israel. Here, they have uncovered the ruins of the Roman era, one of the ten Roman cities of Decapolis. An earthquake destroyed it in the eighth century and the theatre that was uncovered was almost complete as it stands. Today this theatre is actually used for performances. The excavations have uncovered some amazing mosaic floors, part of an extraordinary entire city. At the far end of the Centre Street they are beginning to excavate the huge Tel (mound) of the Philistine city where the bodies of King
Saul and his three sons were hung on the wall of the city after that the Philistine victory over the Israelite army. We arrived in Jerusalem in time for supper then boarded the bus again for an experience called ‘Shabbat of a Lifetime,’ a Sabbath meal in the home of a Jewish family. They began this ministry to Gentiles (non-Jews) some six years earlier and every Sabbath they have a group (we were 23 but the week before they had 50) into their home for a typical Shabbat meal. The joyous occasion went on to past 10:00 p.m. when a very weary group headed back to the hotel. (To be continued in next week’s issue)

Piano “balladeer” to perform at Woodfire Deli submitted Jeffery Straker will debut his new album, Dirt Road Confessional, at the Woodfire Deli in Souris on June 1. On his new album, the Regina SK singer-songwriter continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be a piano balladeer. With themes both contemplative and joyous, the 12-song collection encapsulates the seasoned musician’s experiences of playing over 200 shows around the world since the release of his previous album, 2015’s North Star Falling. Straker regularly draws comparisons to a young Billy Joel or Elton John, with touches of Rufus Wainwright and Harry Nilsson thrown in but on Dirt Road Confessional his personal storytelling style has evolved firmly into his own. At the same time, he was determined to explore different approaches in the studio, which led the album to be constructed out of five separate recording sessions in Lake Echo, NS, Regina, SK, Toronto, ON and Los Angeles, California. Despite so many hands being involved in the end result, the foundation of Dirt Road Confessional
is Straker’s unwavering sonic vision for the record, and its story about finding love while at the same time finding courage to pursue one’s art. Straker says, “When I was writing these songs I didn’t realize how cohesive the theme and inspiration was. A strange result of being away so much is that you gain a perspective of what’s most important to you. That led me to call the album Dirt Road Confessional. It consists of songs that came to me while I was touring, and more specifically, from all the time you have to think while driving from show to show.” “From the release of my first album to now, I’ve tried to balance my inner feelings with chronicling the stories of people around me,” Straker says. “Characters have popped up on all of my albums and a few do on this one too. But this album feels more personal. Lyrically I share more about myself than I have before, and musically I’ve moved in a more rootsy direction, in some ways because that’s the sound I grew up with. It seems like a really natural progression—dobro, banjo and acoustic guitar are featured, but piano is, of
course, still at the core of most of the songs.” Straker, in fact, grew up listening to country music on his family’s rural Saskatchewan farm at the same time he was studying classical music and performing full sonatas and concertos by composers such as Beethoven and Grieg. Eventually, the work of fellow Saskatchewan native Joni Mitchell prompted him to begin writing his own material, and Straker’s focus shifted to poetry and pop hooks, a genre where he’s certainly found some success. Following his critically acclaimed 2012 album “Vagabond” (receiving 4 out of 4 stars from The Toronto Star), his 2015 release “North Star Falling” hit the Top 10 on iTunes’ Canadian singer/songwriter charts and strengthened his ever-growing fan base across Canada and Latin America. Admittedly, the push-and-pull between a career in music and a desire for more stable life— as portrayed on Dirt Road Confessional—won’t likely be resolved anytime soon as his touring calendar is solidly booked for the next 18 months. At this point, Jeffery Straker is giving all he has to his mu-

Straker regularly draws comparisons to a young Billy Joel or Elton John, with touches of Rufus Wainwright and Harry Nilsson thrown in but on Dirt Road Confessional his personal storytelling style has evolved firmly into his own.
