Peloquin’s Spook Spot Once again Peloquin’s Spook Spot is up and running for yet another Halloween. This year’s theme is carnEVIL and they are encouraging you to “step right up!...if you dare!” This Halloween will be their fifth year of transforming their yard into a spooky atmosphere for all to enjoy. Past years they have had many people stop in or simply drive by and honk. Last year they added a donation box with all the proceeds to go to Strays That Can’t Pay, bringing in approximately $50 and will be doing the same this year. Please drop in and enjoy their creation and donate to a worthy cause. They are located approximately 20 minutes east of Souris on Highway 2. PHOTOS/SUBMITTED

submitted by Grant Moffatt The Manitoba AAA Midget Showcase weekend took place in Portage this past weekend with all 13 league teams taking part. The Cougars had a 2-1 win over Interlake on Friday night, and slipped by Kenora with 3 third period goals in a 4-2 win. The Cats travelled to Winnipeg but saw the Winnipeg Wild skate away with a 7-1 win. Rylan Gudnason hooked up with Jared McCorrister with 40 ticks left on the clock for the win. The teams had played a scoreless first period. Lightning stuck early in the second as the Cougars dominated play. Leighton Holstein snapped a shot home midway through the period from Callum Fortin and McCorrister to even the score. The teams had a scoreless battle the rest of the way as Riley Wallace and Riley Buhay put on a goaltending clinic. The Cougars outshot the Lightning 42-20 in the game with Rylan Gudnason banging in a loose puck with 40 seconds to send the Cougars into a celebration mode. Saturday night the Kenora Thistles and Cougars hooked up. Jared McCorrister opened the scoring midway through the first
period with Matthew Ramsey and Leighton Holstein picking up assists and the first period lead. Kenora scored a pair of power play goals in the first ten minutes of the second period to take a 2-1 lead. The teams battled the rest of the period. The third period saw the Cougars tie the score when Callum Fortin hooked up with Dylan Fontaine and Matthew Ramsey to even the score. Tanner Lawrence snapped home a point shot 33 seconds later from Hunter Andrew and Josh Wiens to take the lead. Just over a minute later Jared McCorrister and Dylan Fontaine put the game away as the Cougars picked up their third win of the season. Riley Wallace faced 39 shots in the Cougar net, The Cougars scored 4 goals on 33 shots. Sunday afternoon, in Winnipeg, the Wild jumped out to a 5 goal lead before Josh Wiens scored a power play goal to start the third from Jordan Chudley and Callum Fortin. Randy Cook faced 34 shots in the Cougar net in the loss. The Cougars return to Souris to face Yellowhead this Friday before travelling to face Pembina Valley for the first time this Sunday.

It’s time to “pack a shoebox” for those in need by Darci Semeschuk It’s that time of year again when people all across Canada are buying toys, school supplies and hygiene items, and packing them in shoeboxes to be part of Samaritan’s Purse’s annual Operation Christmas Child ministry to struggling children in the developing world. Students at Souris School are also taking up this cause once again. In fact, thousands of individuals, families, churches, businesses, sports teams, and community groups begin packing shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items, plus personal notes and photos. Souris School has been the main collection point for some time now, in addition to those collected at the Faith Community Baptist Church and the boxes that are left at the Plaindealer. There has been as many as 280 boxes collected but that number, according to volunteer, Carol Turner has dropped significantly in recent years. “I know the number has been pretty low for a few years,” remarked Carol. “We’ve had a bit of a down turn since the flood but I do hope that there will be new enthusiasm for Operation Christmas Child this year. I’d like to see the number of donated shoeboxes go up.” Here is a bit of information from Samaritan’s Purse regarding Operation Christmas Child: Operation Christmas Child is an annual initiative of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and development organization with projects
in more than 100 countries. Thanks to all the items that Canadians lovingly put in their shoeboxes, and the $10-per-box they donate to cover shipping and other program costs, Samaritan’s Purse is able to deliver the boxes to children around the world living in the midst of poverty, disease, war, and natural disaster. Last year, Canadians filled more than 664,000 shoeboxes with gifts that shared God’s love and hope with struggling children in poverty-stricken countries. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and distributed almost 147 million shoebox gifts around the globe. “Every shoebox packed by Canadians enables us to reach into some of the darkest and most isolated parts of the developing world,” said Randy Crosson, director of Operation Christmas Child. “Please consider packing just one more box to increase the impact you and Operation Christmas Child will have this season.” Shoeboxes are given as unconditional gifts regardless of the child’s race, religion or gender. When given, they often open doors for Samaritan’s Purse to work with local community leaders in identifying and addressing important needs such as clean water, literacy and vocational training for women, school meals for children, etc. National Shoebox Collection Week is November 13 – 19. Each giftfilled shoebox packed, donated, and delivered to
one of hundreds of collection centres throughout Canada by November 19 will make a long journey into the arms of a needy child in Haiti, Latin America, or West Africa. Please do not include: candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; warrelated items such as toy
guns, knives or military figures; seeds; chocolate or food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items, such as snow globes or glass containers; or aerosol cans. About Samaritan’s Purse Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian relief and devel-
opment organization that takes its name from Jesus Christ’s biblical story of the Good Samaritan. Like that Good Samaritan, who found a beaten man and helped restore him, we aid victims of war, disease, disaster, poverty, famine, and persecution. Besides Operation Christ-
mas Child, our work includes providing safe water, vocational skills, and agricultural supplies and training to families in the developing world. Shoeboxes can be picked up at the Souris Plaindealer or Souris School, filled and returned by November 15.
