Closure of Port of Churchill could mean closure of community WINNIPEG – Yesterday the Port of Churchill, owned by Denver-based company OmniTRAX, laid off its workforce after the start of another season. Employees, who are in the middle of negotiating a new collective agreement, were caught completely offguard. “Our members were blind-sided,” said Teresa Eschuk, Regional Vice-President of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE), a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Union that represents the workers at the Port. “There was no discussion, no warning, nothing.” Members were called to a meeting at 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon and given the news. “Our concern is for the community as a whole,” said Marianne Hladun, Regional Executive Vice-President with the
PSAC. “It’s not like there’s another employer in town that can absorb these workers.” With the closure of the Canadian Wheat Board the number of employees at the Port of Churchill has been declining. There were approximately 60 unionized employees working at the port last year. UCTE/PSAC anticipated at least this number of people to return for the season. Churchill is a small community of approximately 800 people which can only be accessed by rail or air. The Port of Churchill was the largest employer in the town, employing approximately 10% of the population during seasonal operations. OmniTRAX, which owns the Port of Churchill, refuses to communicate with the Union. In fact, Merv Tweed is quoted as saying “to some
degree our business has been too much of a public interest. We’re a private company doing private business.” “We have been told nothing about this,” said Hladun of the layoffs. “For months we have been asking for information about the potential sale of business and they ignored us. I’m not surprised by the lack of communication on this one.” UCTE/PSAC is actively trying to get answers from OmniTRAX and is committed to working with other stakeholders. “The Port of Churchill is not just a place of work but an integral part of the town. The possible closure of the port could mean the end for a struggling northern community,” said Eschuk.
Port of Churchill layoffs a preventable tragedy Canadian Wheat Board Alliance (Pelly, SK., July 26, 2016) “The layoff notices to grain workers and others at the port of Churchill, Manitoba are a tragedy for both the workers and farmers in western Canada,” said Kyle Korneychuk spokesperson for the Canadian Wheat Board Alliance (CWBA), an independent prairie-wide farm group. “What is worse is they were entirely preventable.” Korneychuk went on to say: “Harper Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz understood this very well and provided a subsidy to create the illusion Churchill would remain a viable port
after he killed the farmer-controlled Wheat Board. Now that the subsidy is at an end, it is no surprise the layoff notices are coming.” “The Port of Churchill provided a significant freight advantage to eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba farmers. Because the single-desk Canadian Wheat Board could service premium customers they fully utilized the port’s facilities and preserved its rail link using a winter rail program to fill the terminal over winter. By coupling this program with on-farm storage premiums, the single desk brought more money to the farm community and kept this strategically vital asset eco-
nomically viable” observed Korneychuk who served on the CWB’s elected Board of Directors and earlier on the Board of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. “Our organization frequently warned in submissions to the Harper Government and in advertising during Federal elections that the giant private grain handling companies who control the majority of the world’s grain trade have no interest in using Churchill. For them it is a smaller volume facility which they do not own.” Korneychuk observed. “On the other hand, farmers represented by the single-desk CWB, which owned no port facilities, had no con-
flict of interest in using whatever port would return the greatest value to producers and Churchill was one of those ports” he said. “We recognized that shareholders and owners of the multinational grain companies and the two foreign owned railways have different priorities, and these do not include returning the maximum value of prairie grain to producers or maintaining shipments through facilities they do not own.” Korneychuk concluded by offering his sympathy to the many workers and their families who loaded prairie grain into ships to help prairie farmers feed the world.

On Friday, July 22, there were not very many people in attendance at our meat draw. However, it was still difficult to win more than one package of meat and only one person managed to win twice. That was Larry Neilson. Gale Collinson held the winning number on the 50-50 draw and received $61. She also drew her own ticket to have a chance at taking home $996. She could not find the Ace of Spades and so it will be up for grabs again next week. We enjoyed a supper of meat loaf, oven veggies, salad and dessert. We are planning a fun golf day on Saturday, August 27. It will be a Par 3 event with a steak barbecue at the Clubroom after all the swinging is done. I understand that the steak supper will cost you $20 and you are responsible for your green fees. Happy Hour – 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. - every Saturday in July and August. Please come and relax with us.

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, How embarrassing! I had a house full of company for supper and I thought that everything was organized and ready to go. As everyone came up to serve themselves the buffet style meal that I prepared, someone pointed out that my homemade gravy was runny. In a panic, I poured the gravy into a cooking pot, added some cornstarch and quickly stirred. The gravy thickened but the large lumps were something I will never live down. Where did I go wrong? Why was the gravy lumpy is it because I hadn’t stirred long enough? Patrice Dear Patrice, Here’s my first piece of advice, laugh about it. Secondly, who tells someone that their gravy is too runny? Further to that, you could have stirred that gravy for an hour and the lumps would have remained because the cornstarch became too hot, too

quickly which caused it to cook. Next time, even if you are in a hurry, dissolve cold water with cornstarch so that the cornstarch (or flour) liquefies. Slowly add the solution to your gravy and it will thicken. If time allows, cook gravy and other sauces in a double boiler to prevent items from burning. Dear Reena, I am looking for something I can spray on a cloth to act as a dust magnet. I like to use old socks and dusting spray but I can no longer find the brand that I like. Do you have any ideas for dusting? Thanks for your wonderful column and past help. Diane Dear Diane, The two easiest methods for dusting are either to use the dust attachment on your vacuum. Or purchase a good quality micro fibre cloth. Wet the cloth with water and dust your entire house, they are absolutely amazing. Be careful not to toss a dryer sheet into the dryer when cleaning micro fibre clothes. A sock is also a great tool for dusting, if mineral oil products are safe on Leslie Chudley your furniture, purSales Associate chase pure mineral Cell: 204-761-0421 oil at a pharmacy and mix half cup leslie.chudley with 4-5 tablespoons @century21.ca

Five players from Souris will travel to Ontario as members of the U16 Team Manitoba Rugby. The tournament will take place August 15 - 21 and the boys will hoping for attention from national scouts. Bottom Left: Colton Rosensteel hails from Souris but plays rugby with Crocus Plains School. Bottom Right: Chaz Will is a member of the Souris School Rugby team. PHOTOS/SUBMITTED by Darci Semeschuk They’ve worked hard and it’s about to pay off for five young men from Souris, and they are looking for some support. In a few short weeks, five Souris boys will be flying off to Toronto to represent their Province at the National Rugby Festival. Andrew Ross, Sam West, Chaz Will, Zack Thexton, who are all Souris Sabres, and Colton Rosensteel, who plays for the Crocus Plainsmen, have all been selected to play for the Manitoba U16 team. It has not been an easy road for the boys to get there. Most of them have battled at least one injury through the regular season but have pushed through to be able to qualify for selection. With five of the twenty-four players who will be traveling to Toronto hailing from Souris, it is the most represented community outside of Winnipeg. This is definitely a testament to the strength of the rugby program in the school and the commitment of our players. It is also a reflection of the community as a whole. The team will be flying to Toronto on August 15, returning on
August 21. They will spend the week playing teams from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. This festival will also have National selection scouts watching the games. Not only is it an opportunity for the boys to be noticed it is also a chance for them to make rugby connections all over the country. According to team manager, Belinda West, this will not be an inexpensive undertaking. The players will be fundraising for the trip as well as covering the expenses out of their own pockets. “It is not cheap for the boys to be able to do this,” explained West. “We will be showing the movie Invictus at the Avalon Theatre on August 2 at 7:30 p.m. The movie is free and is a very inspiring true story about the South African rugby team. Well worth a watch.” If you want to come and support our boys there will be having a silver collection to help towards the cost of the trip to Toronto. West anticipates that the cost for each of the players is $1,200. The players thank you for your support.

Oil Dome will represent Manitoba in Quebec
The Oil Dome Midgets, made up of players from Melita, Pipestone, Deloraine, Hartney, Boissevain, Wawanesa and Souris, won gold at the AAA Provincial Midget tournament held in Winnipeg at Charleswood Park, July 22-24. After winning all five round robin games, the only rural team in the tournament advanced to final game against Winnipeg South Chiefs. The game went into extra innings with Oil Dome winning 4-3. John Patmore of Pipestone was named Tournament MVP. The team now advances to the Nationals being held in Sherbrooke, Quebec, August 18-22. Pictured back row (L-R): Jordan Foote (Boissevain), Dawson Cullen (Wawanesa), Mitch Dillabough (Deloraine), John Patmore (Pipestone), Eric Sorenson (Deloraine), Jeremy Cory (Wawanesa), Shaun Cory (coach Wawanesa), Cole Kirkup (Souris), Brett Hammond (Boissevain), Jeff Smart (coach Waskada). Front row: Mavrick Morrow (Boissevain), Dawson Hole (Boissevain), Jared McCorrister (Boissevain), Brayden Teetaert (Hartney), Jack Kirkup (Melita). Good luck in Quebec! PHOTO/SUBMITTED submitted John Patmore of Pipestone threw three innings of solid relief as Oil Dome defeated the Winnipeg South Chiefs 4-3 in eight innings in the final of the Provincial Midget “AAA” Championship Sunday night at Charleswood Park. “They just came to play everyday,” said Oil Dome coach Shaun Cory who watched his ball club go 5-0 in Winnipeg this past weekend including a 10-6 victory over St. James in the semifinals. “Unlike some of the teams that play year round together - we didn’t have many practices with guys on senior teams. We kind of came in not really sure where we fit in but we just played every out, every
inning the way we had to and we came through.” Patmore got out of a bases loaded jam with none out in the bottom of the sixth, held the Chiefs scoreless in the seventh when they had the winning run on third and then set down Winnipeg South in order in the eighth to seal the deal. “I felt like we couldn’t lose,” said Patmore. “I kind of felt like it was meant to be when we got out of the sixth inning. It was awesome. The guys played great defense behind me. Couldn’t have drawn it up better.” Cole Kirkup scored the go-ahead run all the way from second base on an infield single with two-out in the top of the eighth inning. Chiefs sec-
ond baseman Devon Prive made a sparkling grab on Melita’s Jack Kirkup’s ground ball up the middle - Kirkup beat the throw to first base and Cole Kirkup raced home and beat Winnipeg South first baseman Carson Campbell’s throw to the plate. “It’s so surreal,” said Cole Kirkup. “We figured coming into the tournament we were going to be an underdog and we proved everybody wrong. It’s amazing.” Oil Dome beat South Central 6-4; Bonivital 6-2 and North Winnipeg 7-0 in the round robin. The National Midget “AAA” Baseball Championship will take place August 18-22 in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
