Scarecrow and skeletons, winners announced Lots of effort and fun from many businesses and residents made this year’s Souris Chamber of Commerce Scarecrow contest especially difficult to judge. The criteria that each scarecrow was judged on included: how well it represented who you are and what you do; how much time, energy and creativity went into the cre-

ation; that the scarecrow was scary but not dangerous; that it did not have traditional stuffed clothing. Kurtenbach Trucking was the hands down winner for Best Overall scarecrow as the design incorporated all the above criteria and the fact that it was just plain awesome. Angie and Lon Kurtenbach of

Kurtenbach Trucking incorporated an old truck into a skeleton graveyard. Bones, bones, bones everywhere, enough to earn them the top prize of $300 in Souris Bucks! In the Business category, Scott and Betty-Lou Noble of Souris Home Hardware created a unique motorized painter who was out in front of the store welcoming

customers all week. They earned $100 in Souris Bucks for their effort. Finally in the Residential category, Linda and Dave Swaenepoel showed the community who they were with their lawn care design. One rides, one rakes and they do it rain or shine! Their efforts earned them $100 in Souris Bucks.

Souris Glenwood is looking for board members by Darci Semeschuk If you’ve got some time on your hands, the RM of Souris-Glenwood would like to help you fill those extra hours. The Municipality recently put out a call for volunteers that may be interested in sitting on one or more of the boards that help keep the

community running. Some of these boards include the Beautification committee, Parks, Community Development, Complex, Cemetery, Victoria Park Lodge, Library, Airport Commission, Avalon Theatre, Souris Glenwood Foundation, Health Foundation and the Recreation

Commission. The time commitment isn’t much, according to Souris-Glenwood CAO, Charlotte Parham. Most of these boards meet monthly or bi-monthly, usually in the evening and meetings last about two hours. The appointment is either one or two years, depending on

the board. While Parham says that there may not be positions open on every board, the municipality compiles a list of names and as other board members retire or move on, new people are appointed. “It’s a very fulfilling job, sitting on some of

these boards,” explained Parham. “Just knowing that you have input in your community, that you’re helping get things done is very rewarding.” Parham knows that people who might be newly retired are often looking for something to do, or maybe someone just

wants to know how things happen in the municipality. This is the type of role that they can fill. If you have a few hours a month to spare and you have a vested interest in Souris Glenwood, stop in at the municipal office and leave your name or call 204-483-5200.

So glad those who came enjoyed it and got a lot out of it, too. We’ll try and do it again next year. I went to a Seniors Resource Coordinators Conference in Winnipeg last week. They had some really good information for us, and ideas, some yoga and regular exercises that can be fun to do, but not too hard. One really important topic was “Moods”. We all have different moods for different reasons and we all must remember that we can’t control others moods, but maybe, just maybe by being kind we can help them through a tough time. Some moods are good, and those people can smile, say hello and help others, even if it means just sitting quietly with them, and letting them talk out their problems so they can

move on to a happier place within themselves. All of this is good common sense, we just need to be reminded of it and follow it. So everyday, try to be just a little kinder, pay someone a compliment, say they have done a good job at work that day, or been a good parent, anything, be sincere and you too will feel better. So to all of you reading this from me, I hope you have a wonderful day and you can call our office anytime to say hello or give us an idea of something you would like us to try and

do! Cancer Care patients registrations and rides are now being booked through the Winnipeg office. From now on please call 1-800-2636750, and give them three days notice, when possible. Our office can no longer book rides. But please do not hesitate to call us at 204483-3106 if you need the Cancer Care number again, or any other way we may be able to help you. If you are younger and would like to do housecleaning and yard work we can always use more workers, too. Continued on Page A8

Brandon Wheat Kings have an impressive start to season by Brandi Pollock The Brandon Wheat Kings opened their 201718 season campaign strong with an 8-1 win over the Memorial Cup host, Regina Pats, Friday, September 22, at Westman Place. “The team got off to a great start,” said Brandon

Wheat Kings play-byplay broadcaster, Branden Crowe. “To knock off the Memorial Cup hosts 8-1 on opening night was a perfect start to the season. Over 5,000 plus people filled the building, they were fired up from puck drop and it was all around a great night.”

Watson

Cecil Arthur “Art”

Cecil Arthur “Art” of Souris, MB, husband of the late Doreen Watson passed away on September 18, 2017 at the Personal Care Home Souris, MB. Art was born Elgin, MB to Bill & Eliza Watson on December 29, 1933. In 1942, Art moved to Souris with his family, he and his mother stayed at a boarding house while his Dad served in the Air Force. While attending school Art worked at Pollock’s Groceries stocking shelves and making deliveries. Art recalled a story while riding his bike across the swinging bridge to deliver a sack of sugar to the hospital. On route the sack ripped, spilling its contents. The nurses chipped in to pay for a replacement. Art returned to the store to confess to Mr. Pollock and to get another sack of sugar. Art never forgot that act of kindness for the rest of his life. Over the years Art belonged to the Elk’s Lodge, Legion and the 12th Manitoba Dragoons. With the dragoons is where Art developed his military stride. Good luck trying to keep up with him when he was in his prime. He was an avid walker throughout his life. In 1952 Art began working at Murrays in Souris first on the wash rack and eventually to the parts department, a profession that he would have until May 31, 2000 ending his career at Murrays in Brandon. On September 29, 1956 he married Doreen Lovatt and they had a wonderful life together until her passing in November 2009. Art always supported whatever his children Sandra and Wade were in to and attended many baseball and hockey games that continued with the grandchildren. Art was also in the stands when his wife Doreen was curling and obtained profound knowledge of the game. Art loved to read and was often found sitting in his favourite chair totally absorbed by the story. He introduced that passion for reading to his children by taking them to the library. Art also enjoyed playing cards and board games with friends and family. He would play marathon games of Monopoly in the winters with his children and was actually quite ruthless, often winning those games. From 1966-72 Art and his family lived in Estevan, SK while Art pursued his career at Foley Motors. Upon return to Souris in 1972 to work for Lang Motors, the family settled “across the river” living next door to their lifelong friends, The Doherty’s, until they moved “uptown” in 2009. When Art’s health declined he then moved to Victoria Park Lodge and finally to the Personal Care Home in August 2013. Art will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Sandra Watson, son Wade (Susan) Watson grandchildren/ great-grandchildren Twyla Mclean; Bob (Lucy) Mclean, Jakob, Austin, Averie, Jordyn; Dana (Krista) Mclean, Jayden, Ryder, Oakley; Devin (Tarissa) Moore, Grayson, Remi; Jordan (Keeley) Moore; Bryce (Hannah)Watson. In addition he will be missed by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Personal Care Home and Dr. Cram for their tender care and support given to our Dad over the years. We know Art is now sitting in a lawn chair on a sunny summer day wearing a ball cap, slightly askew, book in hand and a favorite beverage nearby. Rest in Peace Art. “Life is what you celebrate. All of it. Even its end.” A graveside service was held at the Souris & Glenwood Cemetery on Saturday, September 23, 2017, Rev. Jonathan Hoskin presided. In memory of Art donations may be made to Victoria Park Lodge c/o Municipality of Souris-Glenwood, Box 518 Souris, MB R0K 2C0 or Souris Personal Care Home c/o of Prairie Mountain Health Box 10 Souris, MB R0K 2C0. After being swept in the first round of playoffs last year the Wheat Kings are looking for a bounceback season. The Wheat Kings have 18 familiar faces back in the lineup, along with eight rookies to pave the path for a successful season. “For me, 16-yearold defenseman Braden Schneider has been the biggest standout,” Crowe added. “He’s a rookie and is playing on the top pairing against the opponent’s top lines. He’s a big kid, smart, physical and he does all the little things right. He is going to be a great player in the league and a good pro someday.” Crowe says a number of the veterans look very impressive; they look hungry out on the ice and have had a long off-season to get fired up for the 2017-18 campaign. “Ty Lewis and Stelio Matheos have come flying out of the gates, scoring points in bunches. Logan Thompson has been solid between the pipes and the second year guys like Cole Reinhardt, Rylan Bettens, and Garrett Sam-

brook, have all taken steps forward and look bigger, stronger and more comfortable,” added Crowe. Despite the lopsided victory in game one of the season, the Wheat Kings know there is lots of hockey to be played. “I think you have to look at it from both sides. Brandon certainly isn’t planning the championship parade after an 8-1 win, and Regina isn’t hitting the panic button on their end,” Crowe continued. “If anything, it showed that the concerns Brandon had about scoring and where they would get it from might not be warranted. The young guys have stepped up in the off-season and are ready to contribute and the home opener effort showed that.” The Pats got revenge on the Wheat Kings 24-hours later, beating them 4-3 in their home opener on Saturday night in Regina. The Brandon Wheat Kings are back at home Friday, September 29, against Red Deer and Saturday, September 30, against Swift Current.
