Maguire launches petition to save Blood Donor Clinic Over 1,000 signatures in under 24 hours Brandon, MB - Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, launched an online petition yesterday afternoon on his website calling on the Canadian Blood Services to reverse their decision to close the Brandon clinic this June. Maguire hoped to get 1,000 signatures from Westman residents to show how serious the region is about keeping the clinic open. Much to his surprise, the petition has already been signed by over 1,000 people in under 24 hours. Maguire is still

encouraging those who want to join him in fighting to keep the clinic open to do so by visiting www.larrymaguire.ca/blood Maguire said, “It is evident Westman residents are serious about keeping our blood donor clinic open. I will continue to stand up for the many donors who roll up their sleeves and the employees who will be laid off. I am asking folks to take a couple minutes out of their day and sign the petition to save our blood clinic.” Last week Maguire met with representatives from the Canadian Blood Services

in his Parliamentary office to stress the need for the Brandon clinic to remain open and for rural mobile clinics to continue to be made available. In that meeting he reiterated his position that they should reverse their decision to permanently close the clinic and layoff the staff. Even though the federal government has no direct say on the matter Maguire has been a vocal opponent of the closure since it was announced. He said, “I have heard from hundreds of Westman residents in the past couple weeks and it is evident

we are ready to fight to save our blood clinic.” Maguire has pledged to keep the pressure on the Canadian Blood Services in the weeks ahead. He is encouraged to see that many people have already sent letters and emails and is hoping to present his petition to Canadian Blood Services sometime in April. Maguire concluded, “I will continue to be a strong voice for Westman and ensure that our concerns are heard loud and clear in Ottawa.”

Rural residents keeping a close eye on pets and stock after reports of “serial animal killer”

by Darci Semeschuk Rural residents are keeping a short leash on their pets this week after reports of animal cruelty have surfaced causing outrage all over the country. The reports first surfaced on March 27 when Glen Kirby of the online news source, Southwest Post, reported that RCMP had found the mutilated bodies of a goat and a miniature horse in a ditch near Minto, a small community in the RM of Grasslands. Both the animals had their ears sliced off. Tuesday, although it’s not known if the case is related but it does speak to more animal cruelty, a dog from a rural property near Carmen was taken from its yard, stabbed with a screw driver and then dragged to its death behind what is believed to be a smaller SUV or pickup truck. The stories were picked up by CBC and other news sources and since that

time, RCMP admit that four other animals have been found mutilated in the same municipality as the goat and the horse. Three coyotes and a racoon have been found, all with their ears sliced off. The news is sparking reports of “serial” animal killer, as reported on MyToba.ca RCMP aren’t sure exactly how long the latest animals have been dead as they are under varying amounts of snow. According to news reports, the Chief Veterinary office, which oversees animal welfare in Manitoba, dealt with 952 complaints regarding animal welfare in 2016, of which nearly half were investigated. A small percentage involved inflicting “acute suffering, serious injury or harm” upon an animal. An even smaller percentage of cases involved goats or horses. RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact the Blue Hills Detachment at 204-7267522.

Brandon University Alumni Spotlight

submitted Souris-born Debbie Baker (nee Morris) was motivated to succeed in sports and thanks to perseverance and dedication she did just that during her time as a Bobcat. Then Women’s Athletic Director Nancy Stanley played an instrumental part in bringing Baker to BU where she excelled in field hockey and basketball from 19751980. “It was really because of the sports that I decided to enrol at Brandon University and see where that would take me,” said Baker. Baker’s tenure with the BU women’s basketball team was tested with adversity but the challenges only fuelled her strength as a competitor. “After a couple of really rough seasons and only seven players on the team, you had to battle really hard everyday. I took that with me through all my years of playing at BU,” she said. In 1976-77, Baker was co-winner of BU’s Female Athlete of the Year Award. However, she did not get the chance to build off that success after being forced to the sidelines for the entire 1977-78 season due to injury. Instead, Baker put her strong leadership skills on display as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball team. She also credits long-time Athletic Therapist Steve Dzubinski

in helping her on the road to recovery. “It was traumatic for me at the time because I did not want to miss a season. It was not a major thing; I had the meniscus removed in my right knee. Steve was very instrumental in helping me rehabilitate and I certainly appreciated his efforts,” said Baker. Baker did not miss a beat when she returned to the Bobcats line-up in 1979-80. She guided the basketball team to their best-ever season at the time in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Brandon posted a 9-and-7 GPAC record and Baker finished third in the conference in defensive rebounds. “We were able to get some recruits that had some talent and that really helped to spark everyone’s feeling about the game. I think I have always been a hard worker and committed to trying to be a good team player. We seemed to gel and found some success,” added Baker. Success for Baker at BU reached its pinnacle at the end of the season when she became the first-ever recipient of the prestigious H. Stewart Perdue Memorial Award for sportsmanship. “Shock was my first reaction. You are sitting there and are happy for all the award winners and then all of a sudden they call

Brandon University has shone the spotlight on alumni Debbie (Morris) Baker. Souris-born, Baker has displayed leadership skills in sports at BU and in the Brandon School Division for the past 37 years. your name and this look of disbelief comes over your face. At the time, you do not really think about it, but as the years have gone by it has become a very special thing.” The Baker connection to the Bobcats tops all the accolades. Daughters Kellie and Jodie continued the family tradition by playing

Canada West volleyball at BU. “I take tremendous pride in that. There is nothing more special then watching my girls play and following in my footsteps. They both got to play in the Healthy Living Centre and Kellie also experienced the Henry Champ Gym where I played all

my years.” The Baker sisters echo those sentiments. “When I was first deciding where to go, having Kellie as a teammate and my mom as an alumni was something really exciting,” said Jodie. “It was really cool for us all to be able to play at BU.” “I was privileged enough to have her support at every game and her competitive nature instilled in me,” said Kellie. Debbie has displayed those same leadership skills in the Brandon School Division for the past 37 years. She spent 14 years at Harrison, one year at Waverly Park and the past 22 at Kirkcaldy. “The kids, they bring out the best and the worst in you at times. You start each day with a fresh slate, whatever happened the day before you try to learn from it and try to improve on it and see how you can help the kids.” The sporting spotlight also shines on Baker beyond BU, which includes induction into the Softball Manitoba Hall of Fame in 2009. Baker started playing competitively at the age of 13 with her hometown Souris Blues senior ladies team. She later joined the Winnipeg-based Smitty’s Terminators and won numerous western Canadian

championships. She also gives back to the game by grooming the next generation of stars by having served on the coaching staff of the Westman Magic. “One special time was when Kellie and I played in a western Canadian together in Carnduff, SK. She was only 15 at the time and we picked her up to play.” Debbie seemed destined to excel at any sport she picked to play. Field hockey with the Bobcats even left its mark on her memory bank. “It was a gruelling sport. That is a really tough game. If you have not played it then you would not understand. I remember taking a penalty corner on the chin and that ball is made of solid wood. I had a bone bruise for months. Everyone thought I had ink on my chin. I will not forget that for a while.” Looking back on the trail she blazed as a Bobcat, Baker’s best memories were the ones built off the field. “The camaraderie amongst all the teams and the friendships made. I continue to be in touch with a lot of those people. I consider many of those to be lifelong friends.” Debbie Morris Baker is the daughter of Marion Morris of Souris.

Letter to the Editor Dear Souris, It has been almost 3 weeks since the big storm that stranded my daughter Ally and her fiancé Evan in Souris, Manitoba. Now that our lives are back to normal with Evan back on the military base in Minot, ND and Ally back at the University in Philadelphia, PA, I felt it was time to publicly thank all that was part of their rescue on Monday, March 6. As any of you can imagine, when you get a distress call from one of your children, your mind goes a million miles a minute. In this case, being about 2,000 miles away, it was the most helpless feeling that my husband and I had. Ally knew that they were having trouble driving in the snow about 4:00 p.m. and reached out to me to let me know. By 6:00 p.m. she called in a panic when the car slid to the left and the tires ended up stuck in the ditch and a snow drift. Not knowing exactly what the weather was up to, calling 911 was the only option at that point. Needless to say…they were quite busy elsewhere and couldn’t get to them as quickly as we

all would have hoped. By 8:00 p.m. when I knew that this could be the longest night of my life and when no rescue was in reach, I reached out on Facebook to the Souris Manitoba Talks page. Within minutes I had such wonderful responses from the community about trying to help. It started out with Kris Pearce volunteering to drive out and get Ally and Evan, and then not too long after Robin Blecker responding back by offering her home, giving them a warm meal and a place to stay until the storm passed. Little did we know that an overnight turned into a mini vacation of 3 days! Meagan and Scott Perkin helped by keeping everyone updated minute by minute on what was going on. Then when Kris fell into the ditch, Reid Cowieson was his rescuer! Thank you to Jerry Hodgson and Chase Hodgson for assisting too with the convoy back to town! Lastly Cheyenne Cullen-Dagg who coordinated the paramedic call to Ally and Evan making sure that they were not in any medical danger. Almost 5 hours later the rescue took place and the cou-

ple was dropped off to surrogate mom and dad Robin and Chuck Blecker. I am sure that there were many others also who helped but it was the almost 300 responses on Facebook that night that kept us going on this side of the world. That night was one of the longest for my family. After you think about the other things that could have gone wrong…no cell service, no one answering on Facebook, and not being able to reach Ally and Evan, your mind runs wild. I have to say that after the community reached back out to me on Facebook, our nerves were calmed immediately. The warmth of the community with comments on Facebook cheering everyone on was more than my husband and I could have hoped for. So THANK YOU to Kris, Robin, Chuck, Scott, Meagan, Reid, Jerry, Chase, Cheyenne and all of the other many supporters from Souris that kept our family calm. You will forever be part of our family in our hearts. Sincerely, Lori and Herman Gonzalez

Cruizin’ the Crescent gears up for 2017-03-27 by Darci Semeschuk Prepare for a classic car invasion as the Southwest Classic Cruizers finalize their plans for 2017. Scott Murray, who hails from Souris, is the current president of the fledgling club newly formed in 2016. There are approximately 20 members in the Southwest Classic Cruizers, named so to accommodate all of southwest Manitoba. According to Murray, the club has members in several communities and they wanted the name to reflect that. “This name was chosen so we could incorporate not just Souris but the entire southwest region of Manitoba. We have members in Souris & Killarney,” he explained. After their inaugural year, the Club realized a profit and wanted to make a give back. They selected several charities to contribute to Murray said. “Last year, we generated approximately $1,500 of which we will donating back to the community,” Murray said. “We are giving $900. The Palliative Care Equipment Fund will be getting $300,

the Town Beautification Committee will be getting $300, and each of the three museums will be receiving $100 dollars each. The shows that are scheduled for 2017 include the following locations and dates: Three shows in Souris consisting of Cruizin’ the Crescent, June 15 and August 17, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The main Show- n -Shine will be on Sunday, July 16. This will also be held on the Crescent and will start at noon and run until 4:00 p.m. at which time awards will be presented and the rainbow auction and 50/50 draw will be made. According to Murray, last year’s attendance in Souris was over 130 cars, trucks and motorcycles. Killarney will feature four different events: June 8, July 14 and August 10, Cruizin’ to Killarney will take place from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on the Main Street and on June 18, Father’s Day, we will be Cruizin’ the Beach Hut. Make sure you check out some of these great events later this summer.

Numbers not adding up in CBS closure

Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, March 31, 2017

by Darci Semeschuk It’s not all about the lower donation numbers, according to Canadian Blood Services representative Deb Steele-Kretschmer on the decision to close the Brandon Blood Services office. “In Brandon, we are introducing a mobile donor clinic in the community, replacing the underperforming and poorly located permanent site with mobile clinics that provide donors with the choice of a variety of locations,” explained Steele-Kretschmer. “We are closing the permanent clinic as of June 8, 2017. The closure is not a reflection of the quality of the work of our employees or the dedication of our donors in Brandon. “ This will also impact 11 communities currently served by a mobile team from Brandon SteeleKretschmer said. “While we will run mobile clinics using employees from Winnipeg, it is not feasible to continue to run mobile clinics in the 11 Westman communities.” Although CBS is

funded by tax dollars, provincially and federally, Steele-Kretschmer wouldn’t say exactly how much money is budgeted for the Manitoba CBS each year. “We would suggest you contact Manitoba Health directly about their budget for Canadian Blood Services,” she advised. Whether or not this move will save CBS money is also uncertain. “Fiscal responsibility was only one of the contributing factors,” she said. “This closure is part of Canadian Blood Services’ ongoing efforts to ensure a reliable blood supply that meets the highest safety standards at the best possible cost.” Although the initial announcement by CBS cited low donations as the reason the clinic was closing, those numbers don’t add up. Steele-Kretschmer said that low numbers were a contributing factor but not the only reason the decision was made. “Low donation numbers contributed to the decision; however, they were not the only reason. The location of the existing clinic in

Brandon made it difficult to achieve our targets and it is not feasible to operate mobile clinics in Westman communities out of our Winnipeg location.” All clinics results are (trailing 12 months) Brandon perm - 105 units 83% Boissevain - 190 units 82% Dauphin - 347 units 85% Deloraine - 172 units 74% Glenboro -154 units 89% Hamiota - 274 units -95%

Who will “Survive” the 19th Survivor Bonspiel?

by Darci Semeschuk For the 19th year in a row, the Souris Curling Club has taken over the Complex to host Survivor. Each year the committee comes up with a fun theme to follow and this year is no different with Mardi Gras taking centre stage. The huge bonspiel, dubbed one of the largest around with over 100 teams entered, is a major fundraiser for the entire Complex with annual gross sales of $80,000-$100,000 and annual profits in excess of $25,000 as reported by the Souris Curling Club. Over the years these profits have enabled the Curling Club to fund various projects throughout the Complex including last years $14,000 in hall and plumbing repairs and upgrades. On top of the annual profit, the Survivor Bonspiel rents the Complex for the week paying $9,000 in rent. This is a real community event with hundreds of non-curlers attending every year to support the Complex and celebrate the end of winter. St. Paul’s Organ reaches 100th anniversary submitted St. Paul’s United Church plans to celebrate the 100th

year of their Casavant Freres pipe organ in Souris with a concert on the evening of Sunday, May 14. Plans are underway to mark this special occasion, bringing in a guest organist, and paying tribute not only to the organ, but also to the many people who have played this organ over the years. This organ, #727, was originally purchased from Casavant Freres at a total cost for construction and delivery of $3,000, and a ten-year guarantee on workmanship and material. The contract was signed by James McCulloch and Francis Charles Saunderson on March 9, 1917. And what makes the Casavant Freres pipe organ so special? The firm was founded in 1879 by the two brothers, Claver and Samuel Casavant (the Casavant brothers). They had grown up observing their father’s love of the craft of organ building. In 1878, Claver left for France and worked for John Abbey in Versailles. His brother joined him later,

and together they spent time visiting various builders and significant organs in France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and England. On their return to Canada, they established their firm on the site where the present workshops stand in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. The instrument that firmly established Casavant Freres as organ builders of international repute was the one completed in 1891 for the Church of Notre-Dame (now known as Notre-Dame Basilica) in Montreal. During their career, the brothers received much recognition for their work, including being awarded the Grand Prix at the International Exhibition held in Antwerp, Belgium in 1930. In addition to the numerous organs in North America, they installed organs in France, the West Indies, South and Central America, South Africa, and Japan. Casavant Freres has now built almost 4,000 organs since its humble beginnings in rural Quebec 138 years ago, and to this day, is still one of the best known and most respected pipe organ builders in the world. Casavant’s organs con-

tinue to be made mostly by hand, by skilled craftsmen who turn out only about 8 or 10 a year. The church market remains solid, but Casavant would be foolish to miss out on a worldwide

boom in building concert halls. Interestingly, China is a key centre of that activity, with plans for dozens of new halls with organs, due to their more recent interest in Western musical tradition.

Maguire urges Canadian Blood Services to keep Brandon Clinic open Page 8, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, March 31, 2017

Statement by Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris “Yesterday afternoon I met with representatives from Canadian Blood Services in my Parliamentary office to stress the need for the Brandon Clinic to remain open and for rural mobile clinics to continue to be made available. I reiterated my position that they should reverse their decision to permanently close the clinic and layoff the staff.” “Since the Canadian Blood Services made the unilateral decision to close the clinic, many donors have highlighted concerns with the current location and the lack of days the clinic was open for blood donations. These

issues were raised in our discussions and I believe they should be further explored.” “When asked if their current lease is up at the Town Centre or if they need to break the lease when they close, and the costs associated with breaking the lease, they did not have an answer. The issue of how much money will be saved by permanently closing the clinic and running a mobile clinic out of Winnipeg came up and unfortunately that information was also not available. However, they did promise to respond with the information in the near future.” “In media reports, one of the main reasons the Canadian Blood Services raised for closing the clinic

was the fact they were not meeting their donation targets. When asked what those specific targets are, I was not given an answer and they will also get back to me with that information.” “I asked for firm target numbers as I believe that Westman residents will rise to the occasion and show that there is a sustainable donor base. Furthermore, I believe that if they would work with the community in relocating and having more available days to donate, their targets will be met.” “In our discussion I also brought up the issue that Canadian Blood Services will cease to travel to rural communities to operate clinics and residents

will now have to come to Brandon when the mobile unit is sent out from Winnipeg. I am concerned that they are abandoning many of their longstanding blood donors who live in rural areas.” “In the weeks ahead I

will continue to urge Canadian Blood Services to reverse their decision and I will stand up for the donors who roll up their sleeves and the employees who will be laid off. I am asking everyone in Westman to send an email to

Canadian Blood Services and ask them to reverse their decisions to close the clinic. You can reach them at feedback@blood. ca and please CC my personal parliamentary email at Larry.Maguire@parl. gc.ca.”

Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon Souris, is urging Canadian Blood Services (CBS) to reconsider their decision to close the Brandon and subsequently, the rural mobile clinics. He has met with CBS representatives and is awaiting answers to his questions. He is concerned that they are abandoning many of their longstanding blood donors who live in rural areas.
