Scarecrow Days 2018 – Salute to Protective Services By Darci Semeschuk Scarecrow Days is into its twentyseventh year and judging by the interest shown so far, it’s going to be a good one. “We want to have a lot of fun with our scarecrows this year,” explained Chamber member Loretta Turner who owns and operates LT’s Corner Store. “We’re holding a scarecrow building evening in conjunction with Pembina Co-op. We’re honouring our protective services and that’s something near and dear to people’s hearts.” In fact the Chamber has designated 2018 Scarecrow Days theme as a Salute
to Heroes – Honouring our Protective Services. According to Chamber president Bonnie Radcliffe, that can be anyone from police, to firemen, to first responders to armed service members. “All of these segments of our population lay their lives on the line to protect us,” stated Radcliffe. “We want to show them that we appreciate their service and with Scarecrow Days, we can have a little fun with it as well.” LT’s Corner Store and Pembina Coop will be the site of a scarecrow building evening on September 21. Scarecrow stands will be provided and people are asked to bring whatever they may need
to create a unique scarecrow. There will be twelve at each location and people are asked to register with the Corner Store to take part. The weekend, which runs September 21 – 23 begins with a kick-off barbeque at Western Financial on Friday afternoon. There will be town wide yard sales on Saturday and once again the cost to register and be included on the map is $5.00. For that you receive a map and stick as well as balloons. The Souris Fire Department will be holding their annual barbecue at the Fire Hall and the Fly Ball Agility Dog Show will be in town Saturday and
Sunday. J & S Meats food truck will be in its usual location outside the Complex. There’s a barn dance on Saturday evening as well. The AAA Midget Cougars will be hosting their preseason tournament at the Complex all weekend. On Sunday there is a flea market and St. Mary’s Catholic Church is resurrecting their Fall Supper. There are many other activities in the works and more details will follow. Yard Sale participants are asked to look in next week’s Plaindealer for registration information. Maps will be available on September 20 at various locations in Souris.

Trudeau setting the stage for a spring election? Maguire thinks maybe want to know what that’s costing Canadians.” Another issue Maguire says his party is asking for clarification on is the carbon tax. “We have repeatedly asked for documents under the freedom of information act and when we get those documents they are heavily redacted. Canadians want to know what the government’s plan is going forward.” Maguire believes that Prime Minister Trudeau could decide to move the federal election up to spring and is that happens, the Conservatives will be ready he says. “We can see this happening,” stated Maguire. “Trudeau could table a budget, prorogue parliament and call an election. We are even with them in the polls right now and I believe if an election is called, Andrew Scheer could be the next prime minister of Canada. Canadians are disappointed right now.” The Canadian Press reported that a battle is brewing between Quebec MP Maxime Bernier, who tweeted his view that promoting too much diversity is bad for Canada. Scheer and other party members denounced the tweet and called out Bernier. This could overshadow the policy convention. Some of the resolutions up for discussion include a policy to scrap supply management of agricultural products, an issue that will highlight the Scheer-Bernier squabble

as they have taken opposing stances. Other resolutions deal with regulating abortion, repealing gender identity legislation “which compels Canadians to utter made-up pronouns like ‘ze’ and ‘zir,’ and attempting to change the wording of the party’s policy promoting equality for women to equality for “Canadians.” The party membership has approved 74 resolutions for consideration, dividing them into three lists to be debated by groups of delegates in workshops. Only about 10 resolutions from each workshop will then be presented for debate by the entire membership. Maguire and Rempel made stops in Souris, Killarney and Brandon before heading out to Halifax.
Preparing for election
Brandon Souris MP Larry Maguire and Calgary Nose Hill MP Michelle Rempel were in Souris to discuss issues facing Canadians as they made their way to Halifax for the Conservative policy convention. A crowd of apPHOTO/DARCI SEMSCHUK proximately 80 was on hand for the occasion.
Youth absent from political event
The crowd of people that attended the barbeque held by Larry Maguire and Michelle Rempel on August 15 was mainly seniors, as pointed out by Lyall Edgerton who is concerned that the lack of youth attending political events and voting could have detrimental affects on the future of the country. Maguire was quick to point out that while there wasn’t a big turn out of youth at this particular barbeque, he has noted a marked interest from that demographic. PHOTO/DARCI SEMSCHUK

ANSWER:
By Darci Semeschuk Conservative party members, Larry Maguire and Michelle Rempel and other party members from across the country will join party Leader Andrew Scheer in Halifax for their first policy convention since Scheer was elected chief last year. According to Maguire, who was in Souris on August 15 at a luncheon at St. Paul’s United Church, the goal is to focus on becoming the next governing party of Canada. “We will be discussing a lot of issues at the policy convention including the problem facing Canadians because of illegal immigration,” stated Maguire. “We are all in favour of immigration as most of us are from immigrant families and we value those who want to come to Canada legally. It’s just costing a fortune dealing with illegal immigration.” Maguire says his party wants to know what the governments plan is in dealing with illegal immigration. He says that over $173 million has been spent since January on this issue with no end in sight. The problem is also slowing down the process for legal immigrants as resources are being diverted to deal with the issue. “This is a popular issue and people are concerned. More than 300,000 new Canadians arrive legally every year,” he said. “That is being slowed now because of the illegal crossings and we

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

EDITORIAL Westoba Becomes First Credit Create safe play areas for Union in Canada to Launch children on your farm AI-Based Cyber Security submitted This summer, Westoba Credit Union Ltd. became the first credit union in Canada to launch artificial intelligence (AI) based cyber security through an agreement with Darktrace, the world leader in enterprise immune system technology. “Protecting members information is of the utmost importance to Westoba,” says Jim Rediger, Chief Executive Officer of Westoba. “We are entrusted with extremely private and personal information, and as our members move to do more of their banking activities online, we need to ensure those digital channels and spaces are safe and secure.” Darktrace uses machine learning (ML) to keep up with criminal behaviour in the cyber world. Through artificial intelligence, the cyber security system is learning and evolving in real time. This is different to other systems, which re-
quire updates from an external source to be able to identify threats within your environment. “The system is designed to monitor normal patterns of life in your corporate ecosystem and will identify abnormal patterns that are detected, as they happen,” says Norman Neil, Senior Director of Information Systems at Westoba. “This is important because the hackers, fraudsters and criminals out there are now using AI and ML to break into corporate systems.” Westoba Credit Union (WCU) is the eighth largest credit union in Manitoba with 16 locations. WCU is committed to enriching lives and communities by helping financial dreams come true. Darktrace was founded in 2013 by mathematicians from the University of Cambridge and government cyber intelligence experts in the US and UK.
Especially during harvest, there is equipment moving around the farm constantly. Children may perceive the farm as a gigantic playground if they are not given clear rules to follow about safe play areas. Clarity and consistency is key. Little ones do not always recognize or understand dangers even if they have been explained before, and developmentally, often cannot apply rules from situation to situation. Because children are not ready to consistently make safe decisions, and as agricultural work and environmental situations are always changing designated play areas should be
created. Play areas should be: • Designated by boundaries, physical (or visible for older children), and barriers such as fences, gates or shrubs • Away from car/truck/ machine traffic • Have maintained, soft grass footing • Away from unstable structures or items leaning against sheds • Away from loud noises, livestock pens and open water • Within sight and sound of a responsible adult • Close to first aid supplies and a washroom Children 2 to 6 years of age need constant supervision during play. They are slowly developing their muscles and balance. They are learning
Jasper family takes four generations to Hopper days
Hartney Hopper Days is a weekend full of fun and activities each year. One of the traditions is the parade. Pictured are four generations of the Jasper family with the team – Annie and Hope. Connie (Jasper) Aitchison is standing, her dad Ken is holding her son Wade and her grandpa Bill is driving the team. Connie tells me at last year’s parade, there were four generations of Jaspers driving four different teams. What a wonderful tradition for all the generations. PHOTO/COURTESY WENDY WHITLAW
about spatial relationships and how to solve problems. Children this age are entirely dependent on adults: • Take questions seriously • Explain consequences of unsafe play • Be firm and consistent and promote respect for safety rules • Explain how and where to contact an adult quickly in case of emergency Children 7 to 9 years of age have increased mobility and require larger spaces for play. They should have constant or intermittent supervision during play. • Set and enforce consistent rules and explain consequences of breaking those rules • Explain how and where to contact an adult quickly in case of emergency It is extremely important to remember that non-farm children who are visiting will have even less understanding of the risks, so be especially clear when orienting them on the rules. Your own children should not be relied upon to relay those messages. Play areas evolve as children grow older. For example, children younger than 5 can use relatively small areas whereas older children need larger zones for activities such as riding bicycles. Keep in mind that children tend to use equipment or structures in creative ways, other than for what they were intended!
Although no farm-based play area can be guaranteed safe, effective adult supervision and having a realistic knowledge of a child’s developmental capabilities will go a long way.

Harvest well underway in southern Manitoba
Producers are hard at work rushing to get their product into the bin. According to Manitoba Agriculture, spring cereals are average, with good quality and higher protein levels. PHOTO/MICHELLE SEMESCHUK
Harvest in full swing - Manitoba Crop Report By Manitoba Agriculture Warm, dry conditions continue and advance harvest. Moisture stress is evident, causing premature ripening; crop wilting and limited pasture regrowth. Winter cereal/field pea harvest complete. Spring cereal/canola harvested underway. All reported harvested yields highly variable, dependant on amount of in-season rainfall. Baling of pastures, hay land, ditches, sloughs, green
feed and harvested cereal straw continues, to provide livestock winter-feed. Farmers encouraged using Manitoba Hay Listings and Alternative Feed Listing to find additional feed sources or the Pastures for Rent or Wanted listing. Southwest Region Dry warm conditions over the past week continued to ripen crop prematurely.

Bikers stop in Souris as part of Alzheimer’s Poker Derby By Darci Semeschuk Souris was the first check stop on the annual Alzheimer’s Society Motor Cycle Ride Poker Derby thatbegan in Brandon August 18. A hearty pancake breakfast kick started the morning followed by a poker derby, motorcycle games, awards, prizes and a delicious BBQ dinner to wrap things up. This was the twentythird anniversary of the event that saw approximately 100 riders taking part. The Derby lets bikers drive close to 300
kilometres around Westman, picking up poker cards at each location. Each rider gets one poker hand for every $25 raised. In addition to Souris, bikers made stops in Virden, Kenton, Rivers and then back to Brandon. Event Coordinator Whitney Strachan says the ride now only helps support the Alzheimer Society, but serves as a spot for local bikers to reunite. “Many people make this their ride for the year, and will get to see everyone and hang

The Public Works Dept. flushes fire hydrants to clean out iron deposits in the water lines, to verify the hydrants are properly working and to assure continued high quality drinking water. The process also provides the Fire and Water Departments with valuable information.
Will Hydrant Flushing Affect Your Water?
During the flushing process you may notice a slight discoloration or cloudy appearance in your water and the water pressure may drop when work is being done in your immediate neighbourhood. Once the hydrant flushing is complete, the water quality will improve.
What Precautions Should You Take?
Keep a pitcher of clean water in the refrigerator. Ensure the water is running clear prior to using water for cooking, using in automatic washers & dishwashers, or using for other projects.

Crossroads This Week Happy Campers in Hamiota Between the pool and ball diamonds, the Hamiota Municipal Park and Campground is a busy place in the summer. And thanks to the addition of 17 new campsites, it’s busier than ever this year. “Bookings have been amazing,” said Midwest Recreation director bonnie Michaudville. • • • The swimming program at Seech Lake is still going strong. First offered almost 40 years ago, the annual lessons continue to attract a high number of kids at the lake, located north of Oakburn. This year a total of 77 kids signed up – a large percentage of the students are seasonal campers at the lake. • • • Susinski’s office is in the skies Former Shoal Lake resident mans the controls of helicopters to help fight fires, among other work, in British Columbia. He has been employed by Yellowhead Helicopters Ltd for the past 15 years. Besides working a lot of forest fires the company also works for BC Hydro, BC ambulance, search and rescue, diamond drilling, mineral exploration, heli-skiing and just about any other helicopter work you can think of. Susinski is a 1987 Shoal lake graduate and he sometimes works 30 days
straight with 14 hourlong days. The Western Canadian Scuba divers in the Pembina River Scuba divers Greg Ritchie and Cody Johnston were in the Pembina River at La Riviere recently checking on Holiday Mountain’s snowmaking line. According to Bernice Later, the deepest spot they found on the entire corner was 7 feet. • •. • To raise the lake levels or not? The Tri-Lakes Group has been trying to secure funding to proceed with having feasibility studies done on both Rock and Swan Lakes. The primary goal is to determine the ways to improve the health of these lakes, providing long-term benefits to tourism and the recreation industry. Both Swan and Rock Lakes are relatively shallow lakes situated on the Pembina River system. A higher lake level would result in significant positive improvements to the current lake ecosystem in terms of fish habitat. The Carberry NewsExpress $339,718.87 raised in 4 years for CancerCare Manitoba Dawson Smart was thrilled to present a cheque totalling $127,397.85 to

Northern exposure quite different from Southern Souris for new EDO By Darci Semeschuk Echo Finlay left the north behind when she moved her family to Souris to start a new life. Coming from a job where she served as coordinator for Family Resource Centre, Parent Child Coali-
tion through Healthy Child Manitoba for ten and onehalf years, Echo believes that stepping into the position of economic development officer (EDO) is a perfect fit for her experience. “Much like an economic
development officer, it is all about community communication and helping the community thrive through a sense of engagement,” she explained. “The EDO is slightly different with more focus on tourism and the

economic scene.” The economic development officer position was posted online and Echo actually saw that posting before she moved to Souris. “I was excited to see the position open because it felt like a good fir for me,” she stated. “I have an outsider view of the community and did a lot of research through the website and Google Earth. The added bonus is seeing it for the first time and appreciating what you have here.” Finlay says that sometimes when you live somewhere you take it for granted but being new here or visiting you can see just what a treasure Souris is. Finlay says she has been busy going through records of the past year and getting up to speed on what former EDO, Lon Turner had been working on. In addition to that she has been planning the Southwest Business Expo that will take place in Reston in February. “I am looking forward to putting a bid together for Souris to host the Expo in 2020. With the new hotel operating, we should be successful in hosting events like this.”
Echo Finlay has brought her northern roots south to Souris and has accepted the job as Economic Development Officer for Souris Glenwood. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK
For now, Finlay will continue to work with the community, Chamber of Commerce and municipality to promote Souris. She is also organizing her office and is very thankful for the assistance she has received from the staff at the municipal office. Professionally, her next task will be to assist the Chamber with the annual Scarecrow Days and personally to get her children ready for school and life in Souris.
“Right now we are talking about stranger danger and that’s something we didn’t worry about in Churchill,” she chuckled. “All we had to be on the look out for were polar bears. Here it’s just getting my kids used to seeing spiders and to stop being thrilled whenever they see a cow or a horse!” Echo Finlay can be found in her office at the Souris Civic Centre and she hopes to be here for the long haul.
