Souris on the receiving end of Conservative investments By Darci Semeschuk Souris is set to receive over $70,000 in grants thanks to the Progressive Conservative Government. According to a press release issued July 23 from Cliff Cullen’s office Spruce Woods Constituency is to receive funding in the amount of $ 177,405.00 through community development programs such as Community Places, Partner 4 Growth, and Hometown Manitoba. This will allow for 15 upgrades and improvements in Souris-Glenwood, Killarney Turtle Mountain, Glenboro South Cypress, Argyle, Prairie Lakes, Cornwallis and Whitehead Municipalities. “I am very pleased that our government is making these investments in the Spruce Woods constituency,” said MLA Cullen. “Projects like these make our communities stronger and improve the quality of life for Manitoba families.” Mayor Darryl Jackson is also pleased to see some government dollars come Souris’ way. “It’s always good to get outside money,” stated Jackson from his office of July 23. “Most of our organizations and people work hard to gather local funds and when you get some outside money to help those funds go further, that’s good.” The $70,000 announced for Souris includes five local projects. These are the North End Outdoor Warming Shelter Replacement (Community Places Grant) $9155.00; Glenwood Memorial Complex Lighting Project (Community Places Grant) $28,902.00; Souris Minor Ball 2018 Diamond Enhancement Project (Community Places Grant) $13,346.00;

Hillcrest Museum was one of five government grants announced for Souris on July 23. The museums received $14,667.00 for restoration of balconies on east side of the building and roof repairs. They have already done extensive upgrades to the main entrance balconies and they look amazing as seen here. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER Hillcrest Community Corp Inc. Restoration of Balconies on East side of Building & Roof repairs (Com. Places Grant) 14,667.00; Souris Community Development Corp. (Hometown Manitoba Grant) $4559.00. Kris Doull has been working with the former Skate Park committee and they’ve come up with a plan to use the left over funds from that project to build a new warming shelter at the outdoor rink. Using that as seed money of $7900 they applied for and received a grant of $9155. Andrew Hamilton heads the project up and now that they’ve received word that the funds have been received, the committee will meet to select a design

and will have it completed by fall for the 2018 – 2019 winter season. “We are pleased to have this money in order to move forward with the warming shelter,” stated Doull. “Going forward the committee will look at a range of options to ensure safety and visibility at the warming hut.” The funds received for the Complex lighting project will be added to an as yet to be determined Manitoba Hydro grant. According to Jackson these lights will result in a reduction of hydro costs providing they do what the experts say they will. Souris Minor Ball was also thrilled with the grant of $13,346. This will go a long way towards completing their project. “This

new grant will afford us to replace the dugouts, repair and improve the infield with new shale on Diamond 2, and pour concrete slabs in the dugouts of 2,3 and 4, explained Minor Ball representative Loretta Turner. “That’s another $33,000 plus.” The Ball Club has been hard at work over the past few years upgrading the ball fields. Those upgrades include: Diamond 2 received a new fence and backstop fall 2017 through grants from Souris Glenwood Foundation, Community Places Program and Souris Minor Ball in excess of $22,000. Last year they completely rebuilt Diamond 1, now Richardson Pioneer Diamond, a project

that cost approximately $60,000. That money was raised through grants, business sponsorship and private donations, fundraisers and Souris Minor Ball. “These last project should have all our diamonds in good position to be in maintenance mode for a good number of years,” explained Turner. “As for what’s left to be done? We’re still working on the signage for the Richardson Pioneer Diamond and then we’ll be working with and supporting the Agricultural Society in the new washroom and canteen project, bleacher repairs. Souris Minor Ball hosted the Barn Bar at the fair this year. Organized by Darren Janz with music sponsored by Cement Entertainment,

we were able to raise $3940. We are pleased to announce that money will be donated to the washroom and canteen project.” EDO Julie Russell applied for the grant for the CDC in her short time with the CDC. That money will be put towards a fund for signage, benches and floral displays on Crescent Avenue once that project is complete. Hillcrest has already repaired one of their balconies and this grant will allow them to continue with the other balcony and roof repairs. This funding announcement is part of a major investment in community development programs that support important community projects across Manitoba.

Over 500 visitors to The Plum By Nicole Lee We are three weeks into our tourist season and The Plum has already welcomed over 500 visi-

tors! I have had the pleasure of talking to people from Elgin to Australia. Other international visitors to Souris call places

such as Belgium, China, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Trinidad, and the United States home. Many Canadian visitors, like those from Ontario, Newfoundland, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, have included Souris as a stop on their cross-country road trips. The most frequent question I get asked at the Visitor’s Centre is “where is the Bridge?” For those who live or have grown up in Souris the answer seems obvious, however, one visitor did point out that the signs to the Swinging Bridge (which start on Highway 1) suddenly disappeared once they entered town – however, he, and many others, were able to find their way with a few simple directions. Another visitor told me her approach to finding the Bridge without signs, “we decided to try and find the low point in town where the water was, as we crossed the [iron bridge] we looked left and, wouldn’t you know it, there it was!” The second most common question is, “what’s with the peacocks?” The

Peacocks are The Plum’s most frequent visitors, including this peahen and her four chicks.

This Brass Peacock Serving Tray belonged to Mr. H.E. (Al) Wright, Mayor of Souris from 1954-57 & 1960-65, it can be viewed in the lower level of The Plum. Does it suggest that the peacocks have been in Souris longer than we think? peacocks were originally brought to Souris to add exotic variety in Victoria Park’s bird sanctuary. They have become more comfortable and more commonly sighted downtown and outside of the Park since the 2011 flooding. Peacocks do not fly south in the winter – they are kept in a barn and, thanks to donations from local farmers, are fed seed throughout the colder months. I have yet to find an answer to who originally brought in the peacocks and when they

first arrived. The brass serving tray that is on display at The Plum belonged to Mr. H.E. (Al) Wright, Mayor of Souris from 1954-57 & 1960-65 suggests that they could have been here since the late 1950s-early 1960s, although the locals I have spoken to cannot confirm when the peacocks arrived in town. If you have any further information about the peacocks please let me know! I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all of The Plum’s

visitors and supporters. Special thank you to Parks Board members and Mayor Darryl Jackson for your efforts in helping keep the Plum Grounds clean and welcoming. If you would like to volunteer at The Plum – talk to visitors, answer questions about the museum, or help with the gardens and grounds, please contact Nicole either in-person at The Plum, by email: sgvisitorcentre@gmail.com or via facebook @ThePlumVisitorCentre.

EDITORIAL Manitoba Crop Report By Manitoba Agriculture Hot temperatures and rainfall last week has advanced crop quickly with earlier than normal harvest dates expected. Winter cereals are at hard dough stage and starting to ripen. Spring cereals range from milk stage to ripening. Moisture stress seen in fields across Manitoba where rainfall has been inadequate, areas with lighter textured soils

have prematurely ripening crops. Hay yields are below normal and producers are indicating rainfall needed for regrowth to allow for second cut and continued pasture grazing. Specific information on weekly weather statistics as well as seasonal statistics to date at Crop Weather Report Information on specific insects and disease at weekly Insect and Dis-

ease Report Southwest Region Normal to hot temperatures and variable rain events throughout week progressed crops rapidly. Subsoil moisture conditions have recharged with recent rains and provided crops with much needed moisture. Winter wheat and fall rye typically are at the soft to hard dough stage, with some very advanced

fields ripening. Fusarium infected kernels in heads are rare. Spring cereal crops have completed flowering. Staging ranges from milk to hard dough in earliest seeded barley and wheat crops, but majority of staging is milk. Canola, field peas and flax fields are finishing flowering. Seeds are forming developing nicely and disease looks to be

minimal in these crops. Soybeans continue to flower with majority of crop at R3 (early pod) stage. Corn crops have tasselled are starting to show silks. Sunflowers are starting to have flowers open (R5). Hay yields are average to below average and quality is good to fair. Recent rains may encourage regrowth for a second cut in some areas. Producers

in the drier areas have started to seek out alternate feed sources. Past hay reserves were utilized during cool spring conditions, which has reduced feed inventories this summer. In some areas the pasture or water source will be a limiting factor for extended grazing and will further put pressure on this seasons hay crop. Most dugout are about 50 to 60% full.

Manitoba Public Insurance releases first quarter financial results Manitoba Public Insurance reported net income of $33.7 million for the three months of its fiscal year ending May 31, 2018 – a decrease of $5.2 million over the same time period last year. Net income of $14.9 million is reported for the Basic insurance line of business, which is a decrease of $0.6 million from the first three months of the 2017/18 fiscal year.

“While the first quarter results are favourable, net income remains subject to change throughout the year based on variations in investment results affected by the financial markets and weather-related factors that drive claims and claims costs,” said Mark Giesbrecht, vice-president, Finance and Chief Financial Officer, Manitoba Public Insurance.

“Historically, the first two quarters of the Corporation’s fiscal year generate a profit, which is then offset by an increase in claims during the winter months. Summer hail storms, such as the one that struck the southwest area of the province in mid-June, can also have a significant effect on overall claims costs and the resulting financial picture

for the Corporation.” Total earned revenues for the first three months rose by $23.2 million from the same period last year, driven mainly by an increase in the number of motor vehicles insured, the value of those vehicles and a 2.6 per cent overall Basic rate increase ordered by the Public Utilities Board effective March 1, 2018. Last month Manitoba Public Insurance applied to the Public Utilities Board for an overall increase of 2.2 per cent in Basic insurance premiums

for the 2019/20 insurance year. The majority of that increase consists of a proposed Capital Maintenance Provision which will ensure an adequate Basic rate stabilization reserve is maintained throughout the year to absorb unexpected variations in revenues, claims costs and investment income. “Manitoba Public Insurance remains committed to delivering on its mandate to provide exceptional coverage and service at rates that are affordable, predictable and stable over the long-term,” said Gies-

brecht. “Maintaining an adequate rate stabilization reserve, combined with holding sufficient reserves will ensure we meet our financial obligations and are prepared for events such as hail storms. “Prudent claims management practices, including an increased focus on detecting fraudulent claims, along with management actions to control operating costs and maximize operational efficiencies, will ensure we continue delivering on this promise for the benefit of all Manitobans.”

by Gale Collinson Our clubroom was quite busy during our meat draw of Friday, July 20. Lucky tickets were well spread and only Lyle Edgerton was able to claim two packages of meat. Steven Bresky, from Brandon, held the winning number on the 50-50 draw and received $238. The “Chase the Ace” pot was worth $2,211 and Ted Pierce had

the opportunity to put it in his pocket. The Ace of Spades turned out to be very elusive and so someone will be able to have a go at it next week. Just a note to keep in mind – after this Ace is found, the price of a strip of tickets for this draw will be going up to $2. Family and friends of Bill Strath managed to give him a big surprise on Fri-

day. His 90th birthday is on July 23 and family decided to start the party early by all coming to the meat draw. Family and friends came from many parts of the world such as Vancouver, Denver, and even from Switzerland. All in all, a great celebration! Barb Janz also celebrated her birthday this week. Believe she was 95 on Saturday, July 21st.

Flying Club breakfast exceeds Club’s expectations By Darci Semeschuk Members of the Souris Flying Club was thrilled with the turn out at their Fly In breakfast on July 8. “We had 425 people for breakfast and that’s more than usual,” explained long-time member and past president Wayne Gordon. “We even had so many people looking for plane rides that we just

couldn’t handle the number.” The Fly In Breakfast is held annually at the Souris Airport and always on the Sunday of Fair weekend. It has become a favourite of not only community members but from people all over the country. “Every year we make sure we put on a great meal and lots of it,” said Gordon. “It’s

still pretty inexpensive and people get their fill. They also like checking out the planes that are there.” Although there are only about ten members left in the Souris Flying Club, members form other clubs fly down to Souris to be on hand for the occasion. Gordon said that pilots from Ste. Rose, Miniota, Winnipeg, Russell, Carmen,

Shoal Lake, Dauphin, and even a floatplane from Selkirk flew in to Souris on July 8. While to number of members at the Souris Flying Club is fairly low, Gordon says the do get a lot of support from the Brandon Flying Club. Additionally, they do have a fairly young member coming up as Jordan Greig is in the process

just wasn’t enough time to accommodate them all and some were turned away. “We’ll look at that next year,” explained Gordon. “We don’t want to be turning people away so we’ll see what is decided going forward.” The Flying Club is very appreciative of the guests that attend the breakfast, the volunteers that make the event possible and the members and pilots that attend each year. They are looking forward to seeing everyone in 2019!

of getting his commercial pilot’s license. The Fly In Breakfast is the only major fundraiser that the Club holds. This is a well know and popular event and from the turn out in 2018, that popularity has not slipped. People come for the food, check out the planes and often they hire a ride from one of the pilots. This year, according to Gordon they had three planes available to give rides but there were so many people who wanted to go up that there

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Inaugural Field of STARS gala a major success submitted The inaugural Field of STARS gala, presented by Bayer, was a smashing success. Held July 17 in conjunction with Ag in Motion, the event raised a remarkable $526,000 to support STARS’ operations. Coupled with a donation of $100,000 from the Canadian Canola Growers Association, the evening’s final tally was $626,000. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the how the evening went,” said STARS president and CEO Andrea Robertson. “Any time you are holding an event for the first time there is certain degree of trepidation but, as they have done many times in the past, the ag community stepped up to support STARS.” Over 1,200 people were on hand for the gala, which was held at the Ag in Motion site near Langham, Saskatchewan. Along with a delicious steak supper, the evening included a moving presentation by STARS Very Important Patient Adair O’Grady and live and silent auctions. Capping things off was a performance by Juno and

CCMA award-winning recording artist Brett Kissel. “It was outstanding that we could raise that much money in our first year,” Field of STARS chair Ben Voss said in an interview with Golden West Radio. Voss, who is the president and CEO of Morris Industries and also a member of STARS volunteer board of directors, came up with the concept of Field of STARS after attending a gala fundraiser in Calgary that has been put on by the petroleum industry for decades. Voss felt that the agriculture industry should show its support of the charitable air ambulance organization in a similar way. “Everybody (at the event) was proud about agriculture,” he said. “There was a lot of great discussion about how agriculture is an amazing industry and how we can come together and support an event like this.” Kimberly Kroll-Goodwin, manager of events for STARS in Saskatchewan added the organization is incredibly grateful to their partners in agriculture for not only initiating the event, but also for ensuring it was a success.

Thank You Souris Flying Club would like to thank everyone who attended their Fly In Breakfast on July 8.
