New owners at Woodfire Deli, host open house By Darci Semeschuk The very popular Souris Woodfire Deli has new owners. Carlos Munaz and Diana Brana have purchased the business and will take ownership on December 1. Running a business isn’t new to Munaz and Brana, who both hail from Torreon, Mexico, nor is running a successful restaurant, they have done and are doing both. The couple has just sold their Brandon based restaurant, Brandon Hispano and they still own Hey Brandon and Hey Portage quarterly magazines. Carlos has a degree in marketing and Diana has a degree in human resources and both have their MBA. According to Munaz, purchasing the Woodfire Deli wasn’t on his radar the first time he came to
Souris. However, both her and Diana just happened to fall in love with the Woodfire and in fact the entire community of Souris when they came here for a day trip from the city. “We just were amazed at how beautiful Souris was,” explained Carlos. “I actually came out to Souris to take part in an art class at Lagasse’s Studio and I just fell in love with this town. We came back just for a get away and loved the Woodfire Deli when we ate there.” Munaz later got a call from a real estate person, Kit Harrison and he told him that the Woodfire was for sale. “I couldn’t actually believe it had come up for sale. Diana and I just knew we had to buy it because we loved it so much,” stated Munaz. Continued on Page 2
New owners look forward Carlos Munaz and Diana Brana have purchased the Souris Woodfire Deli and take ownership December 1. They are planning a grand opening and ribbon cutting at 5:00 p.m. A blessing will follow and food samples are on the menu. They’ll follow that up with live music so stop in on Saturday, December 1 and say hello to Carlos and Diana. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK

Open house to be held December 1 Continued from Page 1 Outwardly, Woodfire customers won’t see too many changes. The staff, which Carlos says are amazing will remain the same. The menu was a main attraction for Munaz and Brana and that’s something that they are going to stick with going forward. They will add a bit of Mexican flavour to the list because it’s something that people have
been asking him to do. “This place is so great that we don’t want to change it. What we want to do is enhance the menu and add some things,” Munaz said. “Our additions are a fuse between Italian and Mexican and I think that people will like what we offer.” In addition to the slight menu enhancements, Carlos and Diana want to add some more
items to the retail part of the business. “People like the unusual food items and things that are for sale here,” stated Munaz. “We plan to add a few more things that we have access to with a more Mexican flair such as vanilla. You’ll have to come in and see what else we have.” If Tortilla soup is something you have a yearning for it’ll be on
the menu. Additionally Carlos and Diana plan to add a Mexican pizza, beef and pork tacos and a very special Cochinita Pibil (Mexican pulled pork.) As they purchased only the business and not the building, the couple will continue living in Brandon and commute for the time being. They hope to move to Souris and build a home in the

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

future. For now they will move forward and continue to forge a relationship with the community. “The people here have been so kind and welcoming that we just feel like we are home,” explained Munaz. “We attended the Multicultural Festival last week and people kept coming up to meet us. We’re so excited to be here.” Carlos and Diana have some big things planned for Saturday, December 1 when they hold their grand opening. There will be Tortilla soup on the menu and a ribbon cutting at 5:00 p.m. followed by a blessing and
refreshments. “This is a meet and greet and we’ll have food samples and live music,” stated Carlos. “We hope people will stop in a say hello while they enjoy the Santa parade later in the evening.” Going forward, there will be a special New Years Eve supper on December 31. It will feature a four-course meal and there will be two seating times, one at 5:30 and one at 8:30 p.m. Reservations need to be made by December 22. Remember to stop in at the Woodfire Deli and welcome the new owners December 1.
Souris Legion Chase the Ace climbing to $5000 by Gale Collinson Cribbage players occupied seven tables on Wednesday, November 21, and the ladies decided it was their night to win. Joan Phillips and Betty Devins finished the evening with the best score. Evelyn Harlton and Deb Robinson again won second place and Evelyn Bowles with Margaret Edmunds claimed third spot. Joan Dufily held the lucky number for the 5050 draw. A small group of 17 came out to play bingo on Thursday, November 22, and we had quite a few multiple winners. Loudest in the room was Marie Neilson with four yells. Close behind her with three shouts were Barb Gordon and Marge Rose. Making two hollers were Lil Atchison, Cindy Janz, Doreen Edgars, Darlene Dooley and Gale Collinson. Gale made her last call on the Little House to get $26. Our meat draw on Friday, November 23, was very well attended and Lady Luck did not favour many. Only the household of Cindy and Bill Scott was able to take home two packages of meat. The 50-50 draw amounted to $199 and Lorie Howe was the lucky winner. Todd Carlisle had the opportunity to find the Ace of Spades and receive $4,570. However, the Ace refused to cooperate and someone will have a chance at a little more
money next week. A roast turkey supper with trimmings and dessert was on the menu. Nice to have Evelyn Harlton here on her birthday and Ferg Devins will celebrate his 89th birthday on November 24. Also heard that Marie and Larry Neilson had a wedding anniversary this week. Just a note to keep in mind – after this Ace is found, the price of a strip of tickets for the “Chase the Ace” draw will be going up to $2. At our General Meeting on November 20, our Nominating Committee put forth the following list: President – Bob Aussant, Bob Balbar; 1st Vice President – Sam Phillips; 2nd Vice President – Mark Gillis; Secretary – Kathy Nylund; Treasurer – Don Smith; Executive-at-Large – Lee Johnson, Darrin Janz, Sam Matiowsky, Perry Van De Kerckhove, Gale Collinson. Now these are just suggestions. Any of these people can say No at our meeting in December. Nominations will be taken from the floor on December 18. So, if you know of others who would be willing to be on our Executive, bring them out and nominate them so that we can be sure of having a full Executive for 2019.

EDITORIAL Canadian Taxpayers Federation reacts to corporate welfare handout to Maple Leaf Foods The CTF is Canada’s leading non-partisan citizens’ advocacy group fighting for lower taxes, less waste and accountable government. Founded in 1990, the CTF has more than 141,000 supporters and seven offices across Canada. The CTF is funded by free-will, non tax-receiptable contributions. Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) Federal Director Aaron Wudrick released the following statement in response to today’s joint federal-provincial announcement of a $62.5 million taxpayer subsidy
to Maple Leaf Foods: “Canadian and Ontario taxpayers just found out they’re getting the opportunity to make an involuntary donation of $62 million to a profitable, private business. “Usually, corporate welfare is rationalized as job creation, but this case is a unique innovation: 300 employees are getting fired. “While taxpayers have many questions, apparently none of the decisionmakers involved considered this glaringly obvious point: ‘Why would it be unrea-
sonable for a business such as Maple Leaf to simply pay for its own processing plant itself, especially in the dynamic innovative strategic industry of ‘cutting up chickens?’ “Nor is this about simply padding the bottom line for Maple Leaf - both the Ford and Trudeau government are hoping this announcement will deliver considerable political spinoff benefits for politicians, providing they can keep a straight face while saying the word ‘investment.’ “Following in a long legacy of bi-
partisan handout tradition that includes such infuriatingly memorable recipients as Bombardier and General Motors, why would taxpayers worry that the promised economic benefits may not materialize exactly as promised? “Here’s one result that’s a certainty: taxpayers will remember that the Ford and Trudeau governments are respecting their tax dollars by putting them where they are most obviously unneeded: into the pockets of a corporation for the purpose of building a chicken processing plant.”
RCMP issue safety warning for snowmobilers Every year, RCMP officers are called to scenes where snowmobilers have been badly injured or have lost their lives. Last year, six Manitobans died in snowmobile collisions. This year, we want everyone to ride safe while enjoying the outdoors so they make it home safely to their families. Here are some tips to help keep snowmobilers safe this winter: • Know your abilities and ride within your limits. This will allow you to always be in control of your snowmobile. • Always check the weather conditions before you leave.
• Always ride in groups and let people know where you’re going, the route you will be taking, and when you expect to return. • Always wear protective clothing, including a helmet, gloves, and eye protection. Wear layers of clothing to keep warm and dry. • When possible, avoid crossing bodies of water. If you are crossing bodies of water, be cautious of ice thickness, never ride in single file, and wear a life jacket over your outer clothing. • Ride sober. Don’t drink or consume drugs before or while snowmobiling.

A lot of work has been done to date including tree removal, levelling of lots, building of road, and water and sewer lines installed.
They are anticipating to have these lots for sale this winter with some amazing views of the lake. Chase the Ace winner makes the cut for over $8,000 Jeanna Brady’s ticket was the fifth one drawn a the final Chase the Act on October 27 and it much have been her lucky number, as she cut the much sought after Ace of Spades, which was work a whopping $8,653.00. SG Fire Department purchases new QRV submitted The Souris Glenwood Fire Department (SGFD) was reviewing the replacement of their Command/Rescue vehicle due to the age and use of the vehicle. After extensive review and consideration, the SGFD members decided to complete minor required upgrades to the existing unit due to replacement costs of purchasing a new rescue being in excess of $250,000. The SGFD reviewed our fleet and decided to investigate purchasing a Quick Response Vehicle (QVR). After discussions with members and the RM of Glenwood Council, it
was approved to purchase a 1-ton quad cab truck. This truck will complement the existing fleet of vehicles SGFD currently has and will meet many needs. The truck will be first response to all calls to complete scene size up and will be utilized for traffic control, scene management, personnel carrier, hauling equipment and any other task required. The purchase of this vehicle and all associated accessories was completed using reserve funding and donations. The donation from Western Financial Group of $2552.25 was used towards this purchase and we greatly
appreciate their on-going support through the years. SGFD is extremely fortunate with the relationship that we have with Souris Glenwood council as well as the continual donations that we receive from community members as well as businesses. We are continually upgrading equipment to stay current with our skills and services we provide to our community and in turn are always grateful for donations that enable us to do this. The SGFD does numerous fundraising events throughout the year and each event is greatly supported by the community.

Mamma Mia!
Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, November 30, 2018
ABBA tunes, familiar faces in Mamma Mia Courtesty of Heather Reimer – Virden Empire Advance Mamma Mia the musical opened this past week at the Aud Theatre in Virden with a cast and crew recruited from near and far: Virden, Brandon, Killarney, Souris, and as far away as Winnipeg. Unlike most musicals that propel the story with
a leading man and leading lady, Mamma Mia has six lead characters who come together on a Greek island for a wedding and become embroiled in a mystery about which man will walk the bride down the aisle. Broad humour is blended with irresistible music and group dance numbers to create a light and fun evening at the theatre.
Behind (and in front of) the scenes is a live orchestra, costume managers, lighting and sound people, makeup and hair artists, and of course directors/ producer Michelle Chyzyk. The production ran evenings from Wednesday to Saturday plus matinees on Saturday and Sunday. This was a sold out performance for each night.

OBITUARY
Santa Clause Parade hits Souris streets December 1 HUNT Robert Arthur (Bob), July 17, 1932 - October 5, 2015
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Bob. He leaves to mourn his love and partner Sylvia Plawucki of over 25 years. Also left to mourn are Sylviaʼs children: son Wade (Jocelyn) Plawucki, daughter Tara, son Darren (Dino) (Linda) Plawucki and their children Ryan and Jamie. Granddaughter Kelly Capp and her family. Bob treated Sylviaʼs children as if they were his own. Also left to mourn is Bobʼs only sister Doreen (James) Logeot, sisters-in-law Irene (Bill) Hunt and Mary (Bert) Hunt; Aunt Alice Ardagh and Uncle George and Aunt Elva Hunt; and many nieces and nephews, and countless cousins, all of which Bob was so proud. Bob was a person who kept the family connected no matter how far away. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Kathleen Hunt, and by his three brothers, William (Bill), Albert (Bert) and Brian. Bob attended Forbes School (Glenwood Municipality) and one year in Hartney. In 1953 to 1956 he bused children to Hartney by car when Forbes School did not have enough students enrolled to keep it open, during those three years he worked part time at Atkinson Electric, C.C.I.L. Equipment and the Hartney Post Office. In the fall of 1956 he started to work with the Manitoba Hydro Commission as a timekeeper. He spent fourteen years in Boissevain as area clerk then moved to Winnipeg 1972 working as a clerk. In 1975 Bob moved to Jenpeg as a camp clerk. In 1979 he moved to St. James, Winnipeg as a caretaker and then to Gillam in 1985. After 35 years with Manitoba Hydro he retired in 1991. Bob loved all sports, and coached baseball while in Boissevain. When he was no longer able to watch the games in person or on television he continued to enjoy listening to them on the radio. He had a great love of horses, especially Belgians, and was thrilled when one of his geldings made it to the Royal Fair in Toronto.
