Open for Business

Nadine Dietrich mans the front desk at the brand new Souris Hotel. The hotel is open and plans are in the works to celebrate with a grand opening at a later date. For now, people are welcome to stop in and ask for a tour or have a look around. They only ask that you come between the hours of 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. or 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. when staff will have more time to show you around. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Souris Hotel opens for business By Darci Semeschuk The awaited Souris Hotel has opened for business and according to manager Darlene Janssen, the rooms were fully booked on the weekend. “It was a busy weekend for us as we are still working out the kinks,” she stated when she stopped at the Plaindealer to purchase a subscription for the hotel. “We are excited to move forward with this and look forward to showing everyone around.” Janssen says many people have been stopping in at the Hotel to offer their congratulations and ask for a little tour. “We are so happy with our Hotel and are

pleased to share that excitement with people who stop in,” she said. “We’ve set up a few times when we’ll be free to do that because we don’t want to disappoint anyone but there are times when we can’t get away from the desk.” Janssen says that if people want to stop in and have a tour they can do so between 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. or between 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. There will be a formal grand opening but she is still planning that event. Situated in the heart of Souris, the Souris Hotel has 29 rooms and attached to an 18 Suite Active Adult living complex.

The Souris Hotel is close to all the amenities in the community, a “walk anywhere” location that has a variety of rooms available for rent. The brand new rooms are numerous enough to allow for many different types of events, that in the past had to go elsewhere, to occur here. People looking for a weekend away will have a spot to stay while they take in the local attractions such as the Swinging Bridage, the variety of museums, the Rock Shop and of course stroll with the famous peacocks. They also have a unique “To Have and to Hold” wedding package available. Check out their website for all the information and details, the sourishotel.ca

ANSWER:

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

EDITORIAL Recycling may be doomed Right in the centre By Ken Waddell Recycling is a wonderful idea and everyone is in favour of it. For some it is a passion, for some, it is a duty, for some it is a begrudging obligation and for some, it is just a pain. It doesn’t matter how you view recycling. It may well be doomed, dead as a dodo bird and here’s why. In spite of huge efforts by MMSM and Recycle Everywhere and most towns, cities and municipalities, recycling is not working out very well. We pretend to recycle glass but, in actual fact, we are storing used glass, not re-using it. Some places it’s ground up and used for fill at the landfill or for roadways or whatever, but it is a very expensive myth that is being propagated. Just about any place ground glass is used, it would be cheaper to use sand. Municipalities can buy all the new, shiny recycling wheeled dumper bins and dumpsters they want, but they simply don’t work all that efficiently. Here’s why. Some people are basically lazy. Open up a wheeled recycling bin or dumpster and look inside. There will almost always be garbage dumped in with the recycling and that means the whole load is contaminated and will be diverted to the landfill.

There has been multi-tonne loads of recyclables go to our local landfill and someone, by mistake or by being lazy, has dumped a jar of pickle juice or other garbage in the blue bin. It will all be crushed up together and the whole five tonnes is ruined. More fill for the landfill. The only way recycling will work is if there is a financial incentive (real, not tax dollars) at each stage to get the job done. The municipalities should probably get out of the recycling business. The marketplace might be able to look after tin, cardboard, old newspapers and magazines, lead and aluminium if the government got out of the way. The current container levy is a waste of time and money. If the government really wanted to get aluminium cans out of the waste system, the levy would have to be 10 cents like it is for beer. Most other containers have little value, unlike aluminium and tin or steel. A side story to recycling is the islands of plastic forming in our oceans. Individual people can’t be blamed for ocean garbage. That is the fault of cities that can’t or won’t cope with their mountains of garbage. There have to be huge amounts of garbage being barged out to sea. That is just plain criminal when some countries can do the clean-burn thing to create heat, to steam, to electrical energy. The little bit of ash by-product can go into roads.

A lot of information is out there about how Sweden has beaten back their garbage problem to the point they are importing garbage. They fuel their generators with trash and send only a very small percentage of the leftovers to the landfill. It makes sense and that is the main reason Canada and Manitoba may be so reluctant. To the great credit of Evergreen Environmental, the facility that serves Minnedosa, Neepawa, Carberry and several RMs, the clean gasification of waste. Hopefully, it will be a great success and lead the industry. Like a lot of processes, recycling and garbage disposal and utilization requires an integrated approach to regulation, financial incentives and education. Note I put education in the third spot, as most people already know what needs to be done. Mostly, the changes needed require financial [support?] and common sense. There is no common sense in polluting our land, air and oceans. A lot has to change or the consequences will be ugly and expensive. Our office hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., phone 204-483-3106. If we are not in, please leave a message. Resource Coordinators Mary Ann Carlisle and Teenie Carlisle are happy to get your calls and will do our best to get you the help you need as soon as we can. Oh what a beautiful day as I type this report, there is a cool breeze and it is not too hot yet hope it last for the rest of the day this way! It has been way too hot for me lately. Always remember to carry extra water in your vehicle, freeze it and drink it slowly as it thaws if needed. Stay in the shade as much as possible, and if out in the sun wear a big

straw hat to protect you from the hot sun. Even if you are going to be outside for only a little while drink some water before you go out and again when you get back inside. If you plan to stay outside longer take a bottle of water with you to keep from getting dehydrated. We have workers ready to help you out with yard work, housecleaning, odd jobs, and drivers to get you where you need to go, in town our out of town, (when the handi-van is busy.) We hope you use the handi-van often, but if they are busy we will do our best to get you transportation as quickly as we can. We enjoyed the talents of The Crowd Thinners last night at VPL. They were wonderful to listen to, and coming August 3, once again are Dale and Brenda

Lyons, come and enjoy their country music too. The Handi-Van is still taking you, if you want to go, in on the third Wednesday of the month, next trip will be July18. Give us a call if you want to go and enjoy the ride in and get your things done, and have fun visiting on the ride home too. Found this awesome idea when I was reading an article the other day! Apparently a mother had said to her children please do not buy me anything for my birthday and other special occasions as I have too many things already. Just come spend time with me for a visit when you can. So, what they did was clean her home from top to bottom and filled her fridge with fresh foods, and gave her a note that said “We prom-

ise to do this for you, for Christmas, Easter, Birthdays and for dear dad’s birthdays, too. Love your family!” Wow, now that’s what I call ‘home help’ at its very best! Words to Think About: J.M. Robertson once wrote: The pessimist is someone, who is rather keen to bring a strange philosophy that sees the gloom in everything. The optimist is someone, who can visualize a way to make the future bright, and keep the pessimist at bay! Victoria Lifeline could be for you. If you ever feel unsafe on your own, wondering how to get help at anytime if you have a fall give us a call 483-3106 and we will come and hook up the Victoria Lifeline which

is a service that can get you help 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Call the office for more information. Things To Do at Victoria Park Lodge: Monday and Wednesday 10:00 a.m. Victoria Park Lodge and Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Crescent Manor we have our Arm Chair exercises. Souris Fair weekend profitable for Souris Minor Ball By Darci Semeschuk The Souris Fair kicked off with a parade sponsored by the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce. Throughout the weekend there was a rodeo, calf show and sale, a slo pitch tournament and beer gardens. The beer gardens was a fundraiser for Souris Minor Ball and they raised nearly $4000 throughout the weekend. Volunteer Darren Janz said they were thrilled with that amount considering they only sold twelve beer on Sunday! Crowds lined the streets on Saturday in the newly designed parade route, diverted at the last minute to accommodate sewer line work that was to commence that day. Janz also reported that there were more floats this year and he was pleased to see the participation from area businesses such as Carlisle Liquid Starters and OK Tire. Winners in the float contest received a total of $250 in Souris Bucks. They are as follows: Judge’s Choice: Wayne Smith’s black car; First in Business: Carlisle Liquid Starters and OK Tire; Second in Business: LT’s Corner Store; First in Creative: Perkin Seed and Soil; Second in Creative: Scouts and Harvest Salvage; First in Non Business: Class of ’78; Second in Non Business: Faith Commuity Baptist Church. The Plum Museum and Visitors Centre Now Open! by Nicole Lee I am excited to announce that The Plum is open again for the summer! This is a special year, as The Plum will be celebrating its 135th birthday. Built in 1883 as St. Luke’s Anglican Church, The Plum is the oldest public building in Souris and functions as a Museum and Visitor’s Centre. The main sanctuary of this Heritage Building showcases the history of Souris’ churches and the people who attended them. Artefacts on display include: Mrs. Abe McCabe’s 1905 Anthem Book, Mr. Bob Coates’ 1890s era pump organ, and the Clevett Family Christening Gown – made by Alice Kathleen Clevett in 1920 and used to baptize her four sons, eleven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren – among many others. The Visitor’s Centre, located in the basement of The Plum, is also open. We have information about Souris and surrounding area available for visitors and locals alike. There is a wide selection of Souris souvenirs and memora-

bilia, such as: mugs, cups, hats, postcards, magnets, bumper stickers, and records from the Centennial Celebration (I highly recommend Swingin’ Bridge on side 1). Additionally, we have cold drinks, freezies, ice cream novelties, and popcorn for anyone who comes in looking for a snack. The Plum grounds are a great place to relax and enjoy the day! We have a picnic area with grape vine arbour on the east of the building that connects to the Victoria Park walking trails. You may even see the peacock that enjoys this secluded spot. I hope to see many of you down at The Plum this year. If you have any questions about the area, please contact Nicole at sgvisitorcentre@ gmail.com. You can also follow us on Facebook by searching for “@ThePlumVisitorCentre” to stay up to date on news and events happening in Souris. Learning from our past: Mother Knows Best The past is something we often look to for facts, stories, and lessons. This

story about Mary Elizabeth Smith and her son Walter provides us with a clear example of a mother’s ingenuity and resilience. “Joseph Smith and Mary Elizabeth Cooper were married in Orono church in Ontario on January 8, 1890. In the spring they journeyed westward with their few possessions

by rail to a farm located near the present site of Wawanesa. Nine years later, in 1899, with their five children (later eight) they again moved westward, to the east half of section 347-20. They erected a sod house, called a “soddy”, and lived in it until their new house was construct-

ed. During this period the family took shelter under their large table when it rained, for the sod shanty leaked “like a sieve.” During the time Joseph Smith’s family was growing up, Walter’s ear was almost cut off by a fence. His father wanted to cut it all off, but his mother would not allow that to happen. She

took a tin of shoemaker’s wax, softened it and stuck the ear together with the wax. It healed perfectly and left no mark on the ear.” This story was originally submitted to The Souris Plains 75th Anniversary book as “Mother Save Son’s Ear” by George Smith.

Call 483-0107 or 483-3848 The Souris Visitor Centre is located at The Plum. This quaint little building was recued and restored by a group of concerned citizens lead by Averill Whitfield close to twenty years ago. It was originally part of a church and was built in 1883, making it the oldest building in Souris. It is painted in the original Victorian plum and chocolate colours. The pre-restoration colours can be seen in a preserved area inside the building. Make sure you stop in and have a look around.

New simulator at Railway Museum By Darci Semeschuk With tourist season underway in Souris, the Souris Railway Museum is launching a new train simulator that is sure to please railroad history buffs. According to museum coordinator, Ferg Devins the new D5000 is a step up and it’s sure to be a hit with railway buffs. “We have our new diesel locomotive Simulator D5000 up and running now,” stated Devins. “She’s a dandy and Mark

Cranston has been hard at work getting it ready for us.” Installing the simulator didn’t come without its challenges. The first simulator wasn’t working so they were able to find another one in Texas. It has better technology and was donated to the museum by the New York Air Brake Company out of Irving, Texas. The museum requires high speed Internet in order to download different railway routes but

that’s something that is going to be put on hold until installation takes place. For now they are working with just one route. Those wanting to book a time with the simulator are asked to book a time slot. “You must book an appointment with us by calling at 204-483-3361 at least two days in advance,” explained Devins. “We can only handle groups of three or less. A group of three for 30 minutes is $20, two people

for 30 minutes is $15, and one person for 30 minutes is $10. She is a dandy, thanks to New York Air Brake Co. of Irving, Texas for this donation to our museum.” Souris is popular for more than just, Hillcrest, The Plum, and the Souris Railway Museum. It has many fine attractions including Canada’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, beautiful Victoria Park with sheltered campground, swimming pool,

kiddies playground, lookout tower, bowl, stage, skateboard park, North America’s largest agate and semi-precious stone pit, fishing, good eating places, picturesque and challenging nine hole

grass green golf course and a new 29 room hotel. Plan to visit this pretty town of friendly people in Southwest Manitoba, only 30 miles SW of Brandon. For more info call 204483-3361.

Thank you Deloraine Winchester Farmer's Market welcomes the following: • New or Returning Vendors • Buskers • Barbecue/Lunch Hosts

Ferg Devins (seated) and Mark Cranston are getting up to speed on the latest edition to the Souris railway Museum, a new simulator. They hope to have it completely operational for the PHOTO/SUBMITTED tourist season.
