Book launch a huge success By Darci Semeschuk Becky Smith, who writes under her pen name of Rebekah Lee Jenkins has launched her second book, Hope in Oakland, a prequel to The Night They came for Til. The event was a book signing at Hillcrest Museum on June 8 with approximately 200 guests in attendance to pick up a signed copy of the newly released and long anticipated novel. Becky Smith says she was overwhelmed with the support she received at the event and despite being completely exhausted, is out delivering copies to various stores in Brandon and surrounding areas. “I can’t believe how many people came out to the launch,” she stated. “”I am so honoured to have the support of everyone and I can’t thank them enough.” Hope in Oakland is an historical fiction based on actual fact and real people, the first divorce in Canada and Canada’s first female lawyer, Clara Brett Martin. It’s based on real life events that happened right here in and around Souris and documents the story of Pricilla who was introduced to us in The Night They Came for Til. The story covers Pricilla’s divorce, the first divorce on record in Manitoba from 1917 and although Smith has taken liberties with the dates, Priscilla’s story is true, every heartbreaking sentence. “In the interest of privacy, I don’t disclose who Priscilla’s character was based on, but I will continue to think of her as her trial transcript absolutely haunts me,” says Smith “She lived in Haywood, Manitoba in the early 1920’s which I found even worse, this trial took place less than a century ago.” Pricilla’s lawyer, Cora Rood actually developed into the book’s main character but in the beginning Becky didn’t know that was going to happen. “I didn’t know it when I first started writing this story that my character, Cora Rood would become my main character,” she explained. “It wasn’t my intention but as the story evolved, she had so much to say and I had to put

it down on paper.” Becky’s accomplishments with her first novel drew the attention of the people who run the Margaret Laurence House in Neepawa. She was invited to be the author in residence in that historic location and Becky says she was honoured and humbled to be in that atmosphere writing

her book. “It was an inspiration to just be there in Margaret Laurence’s house where so much of her inspiration would have come from,” remarked Becky. Hope in Oakland is available on Amazon, Timeless Treasures, Lady of the Lake, Dundee Design and Poor Michael’s Bookstore.

Food Bank to share in supper’s proceeds By Darci Semeschuk The Souris and Area Food Bank is set to profit from an initiative that is being planned by organizers at St. Paul’s United Church. The group is asking local gardeners to plant an extra row of vegetables and donate them for a community stew and biscuit supper to be held there in September. The proceeds from this event, date to be announced at a later time, will be jointly shared between the Souris and Area Food Bank and the United Church’s Mission and Service fund. For those unfamiliar with the Grow-ARow program, it was started in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1986 when Ron and Eunice O’Donovan produced more potatoes in their backyard garden than their family could consume. They decided to donate the excess to the local food bank, Winnipeg Harvest. Their idea was met with such enthusiasm that the O’Donovan’s decided to encourage their friends and neighbours to also donate their surplus produce. Since then, over 1.4 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables have been given to Winnipeg Harvest through the Grow-A-Row program. Plant a Row • Grow a Row combines the strength of all of the above initiatives.

Through the experience of these communities and their sharing of existing information and communication resources, it is hoped that other places across Canada will establish a Plant a Row • Grow a Row campaign in their own Community. Other United churches in the area are planning similar suppers around the same time. Backgrounder: Plant a Row • Grow a Row has a number of objectives: • To support the continued development of a positive and lasting relationship between the community and its food banks and soup kitchens • To encourage our communities to plant, grow and harvest an extra row of specific vegetables for local food banks and soup kitchens • To ensure that the produce is delivered to the food banks at specified local dropoff locations and times • To have the food distribution agencies weigh and record the weight of total donations to provide some measure of success • To enlist the support of master gardeners, home gardeners, garden clubs, youth groups, seniors, schools, churches, local growers, community gardens and the media.

It takes hours and hours of back-breaking work to grow a garden as lovely as this one. This gardener has set down his rake and taken a break from weeding but he’s obviously given this patch some tender loving care. St. Paul’s United Church is asking gardeners to plant an extra row and donate the produce to the church and the Food Bank. There will be a fundraising supper in September but people need to be thinking about PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER the Grow a Row program now.

EDITORIAL Letter: PC government needs to be careful what they ask for By Ken Waddell The Manitoba PC party is doing a number of good things. Unfortunately, those good things are being side swiped by some really silly things they are asking for. In the process, they have struck out four times on issues. In all four cases, they have incurred the wrath of the newspaper industry. The first goof-up came when the Manitoba government basically abandoned newsprint recycling and they did so in spite of a 25 year-old-agreement with the industry that worked quite well. By abandoning the old program, they have basically left recyclers, the newspaper industry and municipalities without a viable newsprint recycling program. That in itself is bad enough, but newspaper recycling has been one of the mainstays of the recycling industry. Then, the government introduced Bill 8, which basically says that about 25 provincial acts can be changed without giving anyone notice, except in the on-line Manitoba Gazette. Newspapers have no argument with the Gazette being on-line and free, but if an important piece of legislation is being changed, the public deserves to know. Some people don’t even have the Internet and few go scouring through websites to see what the government is going to foist upon them next. Then they followed up with Bill 19, which is a fairly good bill, but allows municipal planning districts to implement changes only by posting notice on their websites. This means that any city, town or RM could approve all kinds of re-zoning without actually telling anyone. When the Manitoba Community Newspaper Association (MCNA) mounted a challenge to Bill 19, many towns and municipalities expressed their support in writing for the MCNA stand. Over 60 people registered to speak against the offensive clauses in the bill at committee hearings. The official opposition forced the government to delay Bill 8 until the fall and the government did agree to not implement the “no newspaper” clauses until later. They can however put the changes into effect whenever they feel like it. To add insult to injury, PC members, including several publishers, got this little titbit by email last week. It was a standard fund-raising letter. It started out, “Dear Ken, I’m emailing you today to ask for your help. We have a lot of good news to share in Manitoba, but we’ve learned that we can’t count on traditional media to share the facts with Manitobans.” Traditional media?? That would be newspapers, I am thinking. Some will recall my column from last week about free votes in the legislature. There are a lot of MLAs who would like a free vote on Bill 8 and Bill 19, but they won’t get that right. MLAs don’t seem to know who wrote these bills and they for sure don’t know who slipped in the bits about newspapers. These clauses are so bad; nobody will claim responsibility for them. That tells us something for sure. There is an old adage that goes like this, “Never get into an argument with a man who buys his ink by the barrel.” It’s a wise saying and it is important to know that newspapers do have a lot of power. It is a fundamental principle of democracy. Having newspapers with differing opinions from each other and from the government is a staunch safeguard of democracy. Everyone knows what happens when a newspaper only spouts the government line or worse yet, is squashed and can’t put out the news at all. For the government to make these four separate, but related errors is simply a very bad case of judgment. We deserve better and ironically, most MLAs know that, but their hands are tied, their voices silenced and their effectiveness neutered. Sports Rambling By Dale McKinnon The NHL season is over. My prediction in November was correct that Las Vegas would crash and burn. I was only eight months off. It was an amazing year for an expansion team. The Jets also provided great entertainment and look promising for the future. They have some great young talent and Byfuglien is the NHL’s greatest bouncer! How often have you seen one player drag two opponents form a pile at the same time? Randy Turner of the Free Press observe “it’s official,” the Stanley Cup final featured one team from a city built on sin, corruption, con artist and unbridled greed. The other city is Las Vegas.” The drink advertised in Vegas was the “Ovechkin Special, a white Russian with NO CUP. They have taken down that sign. Will the Stanley Cup champions

go across the street to met the current President of the U.S. of A? Trump “disinvited” the NFL champs and the NBA champs have indicated they would not go to the White House. The Deloraine Royals lost their only game last week 7-3 to the first place Boissevain Centennials. Jordan Foote had 3 this fro Boissevain including a 2 run home run. Mitch Olson and David Hodgson had 3 hits for the Royals. The Royals hosted Reston June 12 and have a double header in town Sunday, June 17. The answer to last week’s trivia is Chris Nielsen. Chris played his minor hockey in Deloraine before being the #1 pick in the WHL Bantam draft. He played his junior hockey in Calgary and was on the Canadian team in the World Juniors before his time in the NHL. This week’s trivia asks what NHL referee Garrett Rank is doing this weekend?

A Year in the Life of the Souris District Arts Council submitted Ever since the seeds were planted to start an Arts Council fourteen years ago, one of our main goals has been to foster the arts in our own community. While planning a year of arts activities, we try to touch on different aspects in the arts, reaching out to new people as possible new concert goers, and yet encouraging our current season’s ticket holders and present attendees with providing another performance they will enjoy so that they will keep on coming back for more. In addition, we want to be able to expand on the artistic endeavours in the Souris area. During this past year, five performances were presented – The 18 musicians of The Mark Humphries Orchestra brought their music in great Big Band style; Gordon McKeeman and his Rhythm Boys of PEI had the audience tapping their feet to lively East Coast Music; in MTC’s rural touring production, Rod Beattie appeared in many different roles in his telling of the classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’’; Bob Cates wowed the crowd with his juggling and magic in ‘Comedy in Motion’; and Adam T. Elvis and the Good Rockin’ Tonite Band had everyone rockin’ and rollin’ with his tribute to Elvis Presley. Each performance brought its own special artistic talents to the fore, and we were so privileged to be a part of it all. We have also attended workshops, developed our own website, and begun the preparations for the coming year’s events. In addition, we were able to assist with funding to provide Concerts in Care for the residents of the Personal Care Home in Souris. It has been another great year! There are so many people to thank, including the Manitoba Arts Network for including us in their tours, Manitoba Sports, Culture, & Heritage for our Audience Development Grants, the Municipality of Souris-Glenwood for their on-going support, the Board of the Avalon Theatre who have worked with us to improve the facility for our performances, as well as all of our local sponsors, who so willingly helped us reach our goals by

providing their monetary support. Then there are all the volunteers who have helped us – the board members, our members-at-large and our friends of the arts – who have assisted us in being able to host the events we have planned. And now, Souris District Arts Council is thrilled to be able to announce the five performances that will be part of our next season: • The Beetles from Brandon, with the music of the boys from Liverpool - John, Paul, George, and Ringo • Don Amero, country-folk singer/songwriter and his band from Winnipeg, with ‘Amero Little Christmas’

• Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s rural touring production of ‘Buying the Farm’, a romantic comedy with rural roots • Cellist Chloe Dominguez and pianist Janelle Fung of Montreal who bring the music of the masters to life, and in the process, help us to understand • Casati, a folk and jazz trio from Winnipeg with their lush harmonies and inventive instrumentation We are looking forward to being able to bring the Souris District another year of quality entertainment and enjoyment at a reasonable price. More information will follow in an upcoming edition of this paper.

Town Tire donates to Souris Daycare

Larry McKinny of Town Tire and Auto has donated $2605.00 to the Souris Early Learning Centre. Earlier this year the Centre was struggling financially and was unable to pay for renovations done the previous year. A community wide call was put out for financial help and Town Tire was one of the businesses that stepped up to help. McKinny donated $5.00 from every car, truck and implement tire sold throughout March, April and May. He is seen here presenting the cheque to Daycare director, Amanda Wiebe.
