Crescent Avenue upgrades delayed until 2019 The $1.5 million Crescent Avenue upgrades that were slated to take place this summer have been put on hold until 2019. Delays in tendering the project have pushed the dates back so far that municipal officials say it would be impossible to complete the project by winter. Pictured here: work crews reline the sewer pipes under Crescent Avenue on July 7. This is the first phase of the project. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Crescent Avenue project delayed by a year By Darci Semeschuk It will be a year before residents will see any changes to the main business district in Souris. The long-awaited Crescent Avenue upgrades have been delayed by a year due to delivery of materials and the fear that the project may not be completed by winter. According to municipal officials, other than the sewer relining that took

place July 7, no other work will commence in 2018. “The worst case scenario is that if we begin the above ground work that it might not be done in time for winter,” explained Souris Glenwood CAO Charlotte Parham. “Council doesn’t want to be put in the position as to have winter come early and the paving and sidewalks not be completed.”

Souris Glenwood released the following press release on July 17: Crescent Avenue Infrastructure Renewal Project Municipality of SourisGlenwood update on the construction schedule for the Crescent Avenue Infrastructure Renewal Project: The tendering process was completed and contracts have been approved. Contract schedule was

to commence in July 2018, but due to timing of delivery of materials and the risk of not completing the paving and sidewalk installation prior to winter weather conditions, it has been agreed between the municipality and the contractors to delay the construction until summer of 2019. Contract time has been adjusted as follows:

Underground Renewal – including water main, service connections, fire hydrants, and storm sewer installation: Shall commence work by May 21, 2019 and attain substantial completion by July 13, 2019 Surface Renewal – including sidewalk renewal and pavement: Shall commence work by July 1, 2019 and attain substantial

U14 Cardinals earn bronze at Provincials submitted The Souris Cardinals U 14 girl’s team played in the Softball Manitoba Provin-

cials in Winkler from July 13-15. After round robin play they had a record of one win, one loss and one

tie. This advanced them into the playoff round with 16 other teams, first facing Virden where they

won 10-5. They then beat Killarney in the quarter final with a score of 8-5. This put them in the semi

final where they lost to the Brandon Heat 10-3. Brandon went on to win gold against Hamiota. Souris

then faced Glenboro in the bronze medal game with an exciting extra inning finish, winning 10-9.

the Legion activities were Legion noted for me. Our meat Ladies draw of FriAuxiliary day, June 29, was, again a slow evening but that did not by Gale Collinson stop some peoI was away for a couple ple from being extra lucky. of weeks so appreciate that Lyle Edgerton took home

three meat packages and Marion Morris collected two packages. The 50-50 draw amounted to $86 and went to Gladys Skoc. Eleanor Thompson attempted to find the Ace of Spades and put $1,852 in her wallet. This she could not do, so it will be hunted again next week. On Friday, July 6 our

clubroom was a very busy place during the meat draw and after. I understand there was a 40 Year School Reunion in town and many found their way to our Legion. Winning tickets on the meat draws were well spread out and only Marie Neilson was able to go up for two packages of meat. One of the winners was

Betty Lou Davies from England. Don’t suppose she will try to get it home. Danny Belbas held the lucky number on the 50-50 draw and received $236. The Ace of Spades was worth $2,011 and Laurie Strath tried very hard to get it. The Ace had other ideas and so someone will get a chance again next week.

On Saturday, July 7 the family of Cec Kelsnik proudly held a bingo afternoon in her memory. They graciously gave our Branch a generous donation and we sincerely thank them for it. We appreciate the clubroom being quite busy on July 6 and 7 and we hope that everyone had a good time and that you will come again. All are welcome. Our meat draw of Friday, July 13 was a little quieter than last week. Wonder if it was partly due to the date. Multiple wins were very difficult to get. As a matter of fact, the only family to accomplish that was the Genailles. Ed collected twice and Delores went up once. The 5050 draw, worth $96 was won by Odile Furet from St. Claude. Bob Edgerton attempted to find the Ace of Spades but couldn’t. He was a little disappointed cause he wanted to take the $2,094 home. A cold plate of chicken, ham and salads, with dessert was offered for supper. Just a note to keep in mind, after this Ace is found the price of a strip of tickets will be going up to $2.

EDITORIAL Wild Burrowing Owl spotted

#17 Service Flying Training School part of Souris’ history submitted The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (B.C.A.T.P. ) of World War II was the largest infrastructure program Canada had ever seen, surpassing the construction of the transatlantic railway. The training establishments changed the social and economic conditions in many communities forever. The influx of 1,500 or more trainees and staff suddenly added to communities like Souris, and after the war ended many of the B.C.A.T.P. buildings became community halls, hockey rinks, housing, and business structures. Not surprising, with young men and women from all parts of Canada coming together during training, it was probably one of the greatest unifying forces in our history. #17 Service Flying Training School was a huge part of Souris’ history and your story is our story. That history is preserved at the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum and on August 9 we can see, touch and watch that history fly again!

The CATPM Air Display Event on August 9th will feature the air museum’s own WWII flying aircraft, including the Canadian and British Tiger Moths, our Harvard, our Cornell and Stinson. We are also very excited to have a number of private aircraft, two Stearman, a Harvard and a T-28 Trojan! Gates open 4:00 p.m, $10 per person, 12 and under free. The RCA Museum will have a display on site; food vendors on site. Come see the historic aircraft up close, bring a lawn chair, and a Flying Demonstration will take place at 6:00 pm, weather permitting. The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during WWII. The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is proud to be one of the seven Manitoba Signature Museums, a Manitoba Star Attraction and a National Historic Site.

By Nicole Frederiksen and Alex Froese Update from the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program, Working in Cooperation with Turtle Mountain and West Souris River Conservation District. It has been a very busy and exciting month for the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program. On June 3, a wild Burrowing Owl was spotted at one of our release sites. This was an exciting sight as Burrowing Owls numbers in Manitoba (and across Canada) have been on a steep and steady decline in the last 50 years and we have spotted very few owls on roadside surveys in recent seasons. The wild owl was observed digging outside one of our release pens where we temporarily house owls prior to reintroduction. Based on the behaviour of the wild owl, we knew it was female owl. She was very interested in the male inside the pen who had yet to produce a nest with partner. The male inside the pen was calling to this wild female which is likely what attracted her to his pen. As it was getting later in the breeding season and there were no wild males present, our program stakeholders approved temporarily holding this female with this male in hopes they would produce a nest. The captive-release female who had not nested at this point was relocated with another release male at another site in hopes that they might produce a nest. The wild female owl was so eager to get into the pen with the male; she was easily captured by entering a one-way hole under the pen (that we constructed), which allowed her to walk underneath the pen. Once inside, we banded and weighed her and then left to get further acquainted with her mate. After 10 days, eggs were found in the nest and she is currently sitting on a

clutch of five eggs that we expect to hatch in the next few days. She, her mate and some of her young will be released after the young are near fledging which is around four weeks of age. If you’d like to read more on this story, our program director, Alex Froese, was interviewed by CBC. Here is the link to find the story online. http://www.cbc.ca/ news/canada/manitoba/burrowing-owl-love-1.4693561 Since the end of May and beginning of June, four of five captive-release pairs have laid a total of 25 eggs and 14 of 20 have hatched. The last five eggs should hatch in the next few days. The weather has been dry and hot which is great for Burrowing Owls as they do not fare well in wet conditions (i.e., burrows flood and food sources decline) which the owls and our program have experienced in a handful of the last eight seasons in southwestern Manitoba.

There are a lot of grasshoppers around this season, which is usually a great sign for Burrowing Owls. Approximately 80% of the Burrowing Owls diet is insect and they definitely love grasshoppers in particular. As always, if you hear or see a Burrowing Owls on your land, don’t hesitate to call Turtle Mountain Conservation District at (204) 747-2530, West Souris River Conservation District at (204) 877-3020 or our direct Hoot Line at (204) 807-4668. If you are interested in keeping with what is happening with the program please follow our social media, at the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program on Facebook and koko.theowl on Instagram. Fair realizes $6000 profit submitted The Souris Fair took place on July 7 & 8 at the local fairgrounds. We had similar events to last year (team roping, barrel racing jackpot, antique tractor pull, parade, slo-pitch tournament, sand pit treasure hunt, scavenger hunt, face painting, roast beef supper, and 4-H cattle show & sale) with new things added such as the kids pedal tractor competition, vendor market, cow pie bingo and the human tractor pull. The fair was a great success considering the hot weather and the power outage! Thank you to those who provided generators to help continue running the fair and to Manitoba Hydro for coming to fix the transformer so we could continue with our events on regular power for the rest of the evening. Approximately 500 people came through the gate over the weekend and the fair made a profit of approximately $6000. This profit helps greatly to fund the costs of main-

taining the fairgrounds and to reach our canteen & washrooms project goal. Speaking of the canteen and washrooms project, the roast beef supper fundraiser made a profit of $827.56 as well as $207.60 in donations! Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

An expanse of blue sky and yellow canola wake up a prairie landscape. Canola crops are in full bloom and some are showing the effects of very hot temperatures across Manitoba.

Manitoba Crop Report By Manitoba Agriculture Hot temperatures continue to advance crops across Manitoba. The majority of the province would benefit from a good rain. Majority of acres and crop types are in the flowering and grain fill stages of development. Disease pressure and

insect activity continues to be monitored as the growing season progresses. Haying continues, yields are below normal. Southwest Region Areas north of highway 1 received small amounts of rain over the past week; larger amounts fell in the southern part of the region. Melita, Virden, Pierson

and Wawanesa received around 25 mm of rain. Hot and windy conditions are drying up moisture very quickly and worsening conditions in areas that did not get recent rains. Crops are showing the effects of the very hot temperatures. The majority of the southwest region could use a good rain.

Solutions & Substitutions Reena Nerbas is a popular motivational presenter for large and small groups; check out her website: reena.ca. Ask a question or share a tip at reena.ca Dear Reena, How can I get diesel fuel odour out of upholstered boat cushions that have foam inside of the material? Mike Dear Mike, Begin by cleaning the cushions with dish soap and water. Blot the entire cushion and lay on the grass to air dry. When the cushions are dry purchase heavy-duty garbage bags and put one of the cushions inside of the bag with a sock filled with fresh coffee grounds (close with an elastic band), or a few dryer sheets or cotton balls soaked with vanilla. Use your vacuum nozzle to suck out all the air in the bag. Close the bag and leave for a day or two. Remove cushion and repeat steps with the next cushion. Dear Reena, I can’t seem to solve the problem of gravies and sauces separating after being frozen. I have tried cornstarch as the thickener instead of flour

with no luck. Any suggestions? Janet Dear Janet, Gravy may be frozen for several months. To prevent “skin” from forming on the top, lay a piece of wax paper or plastic wrap directly on the surface of the gravy before covering the container. If you know you will be freezing gravy, try to use as little fat and milk as possible so that it does not separate when thawed. You can reduce the chances of separation greatly if you run the gravy through a blender or food processor before freezing. Feedback from Wise Contributor Re: Cold Sores I use and follow similar directions as the previous contributor for getting rid of cold sores. Wash the area with liquid soap and warm water for less than a minute around 2 - 3 times a day. Just before bedtime, apply an ice cube wrapped in a tissue onto the affected area and allow to dry overnight. It freezes the cold sore because it’s just another virus. Bob Easy Solutions for Everyday Challenges • Yesterday, my

daughter got gum in her hair, and I was dreading the ‘peanut butter’ treatment! Rather than use ice, or cut her hair, I took the section of hair that was full of gum and put a paper towel behind it, then sprayed it thoroughly with Pam cooking spray, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and could

By Reena Nerbas

comb all the gum out. A quick hair shampoo, and problem solved! The paper towel was used to help catch the spray from soaking into the rest of her hair. Take care, Tina • Here is a great use for leftover rice. Sometimes I make rice pudding- place rice in a bowl, add 1-2 cups of low fat

cool whip, rinse half to 1 cups raisins and add about 2-3 tsp of cinnamon. Mix well and cool in fridge until needed. It is delicious. This would be for using about 2 cups of rice. Gail • When barbequing hamburgers this summer, don’t press down on the meat when the burgers

are on the grill. That will just press out moisture and you’ll end up with dry burgers. Dave Note: Every user assumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. Test all products on an inconspicuous area first.
