More to a supper than just buying a ticket

When you line up to buy a ticket to an event such as the Grow A Row Supper that was held at St. Paul’s United Church last week, you often don’t see the work that goes into making such an event a success. You’re only thinking about how good it’s going to taste. For the volunteers there are hours and hours of planning, marketing and preparing that go into it. Pictured here you see just a few of the volunteers (L-R): Nancy Birks, Lois Brown, Louise Lawson, Bill Lawson all hard at work preparing the supper for a large crowd who came out to enjoy the evening.

Souris Presence Strong in Virden’s Mamma Mia! Production submitted The Virden and District Chorale organization has become very well known for its polished productions that audiences have been enjoying for many years, including most recently, Footloose, Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Sound of Music, Crazy for You, and Legally Blonde. The Chorale is pleased to announce that a number of performers with Souris connections will be taking the stage in their fall

production of Mamma Mia! The Musical at the historic Auditorium Theatre in Virden. Grant and Cherilyn Jackson, Sharon Brown, and former Souris residents, Rob Lovatt and Bev Towler all appear in this sensational megahit show which showcases the music of 70’s megastars, ABBA. Westman performers and a large crew of passionate individuals are already preparing for the shows that will take place November 21 – 25, with matinées scheduled for both Sat-

urday and Sunday afternoons. Mamma Mia’s lead trio of women will be played by three of Westman’s very finest singers. Marla Fontaine, a dearly loved Brandon music educator, will appear as Donna Sheridan. Marla’s last appearance on stage in musical theatre was as Daisy Mae in Flin Flon’s high school production of L’il Abner. We are so excited that she is taking the leap with us. At her side will be rockstar Mariah Phillips as the sexy Tanya, and vi-

brant Sandy Jasper as the hilarious Rosie. Mariah is the entertainment reporter for the Brandon Sun Social Column and lends her powerhouse vocals as the lead singer for the band Misty Street. Sandy Jasper is a professional choral musician previously singing with the National Youth Choir and currently with the Juno-nominated Canadian Chamber Choir. Sandy definitely knows how to sing, and her presence always ensures that everyone has a great time. We are convinced that we

have a dynamite combination in these incredible women. The three possible Dads in Mamma Mia! will be played by a handsome and talented trio of men. Dean Munchinsky appears as Sam the architect. Dean serves as an assistant director in many local productions (including this one), and he is a Brandon resident, Virden businessman, and an absolute dramatic genius. Veteran performer, Dave Simard, will play the role of Harry Bright. Dave is

Our bingo evenings started on Thursday, September 13, with 20 optimistic noisemakers in attendance. Outdoing everyone with four shouts was Darlene Dooley. Two hollers came from Cathy Ewen, Dave Johnson and Joan Phillips. Cindy Janz waited to yell on the “Little House” and received $34 for her patience. On Friday, September14, our meat draw was well attended. Winning tickets were spread over the clubroom and only Marnie Heath was able to collect two packages of meat.

The 50-50 draw was worth $145 and the lucky number belonged to Joan Harlton. Joan drew her own ticket to have a chance at finding the Ace of Spades and take

home $2,959.50. This she was unable to do and so it will be up for grabs next week. A roast turkey supper with all the trimmings and dessert was available.

Just a note to keep in mind – after this Ace is found, the price of a strip of tickets for the “Chase the Ace” draw will be going up to $2.

EDITORIAL Taxpayers just bought a pipeline Dear Editor, Souris taxpayers just bought and nationalized a pipeline. When Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister, three major energy companies had pipeline projects in the works – Northern Gateway, Energy East and Trans Mountain – they were prepared to build in Canada. Now thanks to Liberal policies and decisions we have none that are ready to go forward. Last week, the Federal Court of Appeal found that

under the Liberal government, they had failed to properly consult indigenous peoples on the Trans Mountain Expansion. The Trans Mountain pipeline is crucial to oil and gas workers across Canada and to the regional economies that stand to benefit from its expansion, including the 43 First Nation communities that have benefit agreements worth $400 million which now hang in the balance. Just recently, Prime Min-

ister Trudeau was given multiple opportunities to outline his plan to get the Trans Mountain Expansion built and Canadians back to work. Instead, he chose to rely on empty rhetoric. This comes after he forced Liberal MPs on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources to shut down a study of the government’s handling of the Trans Mountain Expansion. When the Liberals announced that they were nationalizing the existing Trans

Mountain pipeline, Canadians were told that their $4.5 billion would allow construction to begin immediately. The reality is that now taxpayers are the shareholders of this monstrous Liberal boondoggle and not one new centimetre of pipeline has been built. Thousands of Canadians have lost their jobs because of the Liberal government’s failure. It is absolutely unacceptable that taxpayers are on the hook for a $4.5 billion pipeline that may never be

built. Worse still, Prime Minister Trudeau’s failure to get the Trans Mountain Expansion built is now threatening other expansions in the oil and gas sector, adding to the total number of jobs at risk. The Liberal government needs to immediately outline a concrete plan to ensure that the Trans Mountain Expansion is actually completed. Workers deserve to know when construction will start and when the project will be completed.

Canada’s Conservatives are the only party fighting for the hardworking men and women in our resource sector, whose jobs and livelihoods depend on the projects that the Liberal government has failed to champion. Please let me know what you think about the Liberal government using your tax dollars to nationalize a pipeline by emailing me directly at Larry.Maguire@parl. gc.ca Larry Maguire, MP Brandon-Souris

Municipality of Souris-Glenwood Council notes

Manitoba needs to cancel its corporate welfare credit card Submitted by CTF Like an overly enthusiastic shopper with a maxedout credit card, the Manitoba government is on a corporate welfare spending spree that it simply can’t afford. Premier Brian Pallister just stopped by a new Canada Goose facility in Winnipeg with a gift of almost $1.5 million in taxpayers’ money. The government says money will support the “onboarding and technical training of the new sewing

machine operators.” In other words, Manitoba taxpayers are paying Canada Goose $1.5 million to hire people to sew thousand-dollar luxury coats. What tale of woe reduced Canada Goose to this need for taxpayer-funded charity? That’s a tough question. Right in the government release, Canada Goose cheerfully notes the total bill for the new facility is $15.8 million so it doesn’t seem to be short on cash. In fact,

Canada Goose’s total market capitalization shows the company is worth more than $8 billion. It’s a good bet the massive multi-national won’t even notice the taxpayer cash on its bottom line and it definitely didn’t need it. This wasn’t the only stop on the province’s corporatewelfare spending spree. The province is chipping in almost $12 million for the True North Square project. Much of the money will go

to sidewalks, greenspaces and a water feature. But the money will also go to a “194-unit residential tower at 225 Carlton St.” That’s a modest description of the tower. The 225carlton.ca website does it greater justice. There’s going to be courteous concierge personnel and 24/7 security. The countertops are quartz. There’s a yoga studio and rooftop lounge. If it weren’t for the taxpayer money, who knows what the

countertops would look like or where the residents would do their stretching? Once again, it’s hard to imagine why the government felt the need to lavish this corporate welfare on True North. The government triumphantly points out that the private sector will invest $550 million in the project. Are taxpayers to believe the developers could secure more than a half-a-billion in financing, but would have pulled the

plug on the project without the corporate welfare? Unfortunately, this recent corporate welfare spending spree isn’t unprecedented for this government. The provincial and federal governments teamed up to hand Maple Leaf $500,000 in taxpayers’ money to buy bacon-making equipment as part of a $35-million expansion. That happened mere months after the last provincial election. The corporate Continued on Page 6

The RM of Pipestone will become a one-stop shop for summer recreation including a full-service campground, spray park, man-made lake and golf course facility. “The impact on our communities economically will be dramatic through the increased traffic in our business and tourism sectors. This is an opportunity for sustainability and growth for the tourism and business sectors of our region,” informed Tanis Chalmers, Manager

of Economic Development, RM of Pipestone. The local population has been actively discussing the options for a pool over the past 30 years with many differing options. When the idea of an artificial lake was discussed there was optimistic response and excitement that this project would be successful. It is a unique and affordable option to provide a new service to the region. Development costs are a minimal, the annual deficit is minimal and the ability to hire staff is more effective than that of a pool. Construction is set to commence in September 2018 with an estimated opening of Summer 2019. Five Souris players on Southwest squad The Cougars hosted a seven-team league tournament last weekend with them playing four games in four days, going undefeated on the weekend. The new crop of AAA Midget Cougars will be in Brandon on the September 22 for a preseason game with the Midget Wheat Kings. The Cougars then travel to Kenora to start the regular season on September 29 and play a two game weekend before returning to Souris to host the Central Plains Capitals on October 6 in the home opener. By Grant Moffatt The Cougars hosted six teams from the Manitoba AAA League this past weekend. The team played four games and came out with wins over Brandon, Norman, Central Plains and Yellowhead. The Cougars carried 28 players into the weekend including four goalies and reduced the roster to 18 skaters and a pair of goalies after the weekend. The team will travel to Brandon this Saturday night before opening the regular season on the road in Kenora with a pair of games on the last weekend in September. For the first time in recent memory the Cougars will ice a team with all players from the region.

Thirteen players will return from last years team, with five moving up from the Bantam Cougars and two players who played High School hockey last year. Five players are from Souris, three from Virden and Boissevain, a pair from Killarney and Chater with players also coming from Oak Lake, Wawanesa, Hartney, Kemnay and Medora to play on the 2018/2019 team. If the first weekend is any indication the Cougars size and speed should make for an interesting season. The Scouts in attendance claim the team will be near the top of league standings after 48 games. More photos on Page 8

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
