Hillcrest Old Fashioned Christmas, a treat for all It was elegance and nostalgia at the recent Hillcrest Museum Old Fashioned Christmas held Saturday, December 12. Hillcrest volunteers opened the doors of the majestically decorated building to all who wanted to experience what life was like in days gone by. Guests who took part in the event remarked that they had a unique glimpse into what life must have been like before cable television and computers. They felt as though Squire Sowden himself had stepped out of the pages of history to welcome guests to his home. Pictured: Hillcrest Board member, Dawn Bowie, in Victorian era costume pours out the punch for the guests. PHOTOS/ DEBBIE BUTLER

Left: Diane Nelson, who travelled to Souris for Hillcrest Museum’s Old Fashioned Christmas, entertained, and was accompanied by, local man, Kevin Bowie. Top: Souris Swinging Bridge, a beauty in the night. Squire Sowden would be amazed at the sight of the new Souris Swinging Bridge. Many of his guests may have used his first bridge had he opened his house for Christmas like the Hillcrest Board did for 2015. Bottom: Hillcrest halls ring with the music of the old piano, specially tuned for the event on December 12. Glenda McConnell accompanied Kevin and Diane as guests enjoyed an evening of Christmas music.

Souris RCMP investigate fatal collision On December 18, 2015, at approximately 8:50 a.m., Souris RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Road 66N and 117W in the Municipality of Riverdale, MB. Initial investigation reveals that a northbound ve-

hicle collided with the side of a westbound vehicle, sending it into a ditch. The driver and lone occupant of the westbound vehicle, a 68 year-old male from Riverdale, MB was transported to hospital and later pronounced de-

ceased. A traffic analyst is assisting the ongoing investigation in order to establish all contributing factors to the collision. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. No other details are available at this time.

submitted ‘Making The Landscape Their Own’ is the fourth in a series of popular history books that arise from the stories of people taking on both the beauty and harshness of this land. Past Vantage Points have explored geologic, Metis, First Nations, fur trade and settler stories. These books aim to tie communities together through stories of a mutual love of landscape. VP 4 looks at the early Euro-settlement years, from the first farmers, to the towns that were meant to be but were passed by, to the courageous women who set up business and raised family. Ken Storie, retired teacher, and now TM-SPHA’s researcher/writer, chooses material to ensure every nook and cranny of southwest Manitoba is represented. He’s been at this for three years and is confident the stories will never run out. TM-SPHA already has plans for VP 5 and 6. Ed Ledohowski says in his Guest Editorial: “Vantage Points has become the Readers Digest of southwestern

Brandon MB, December 17, 2015 - Westman Communications Group (WCG) is pleased to announce that the winner of the Loyalty Contest Star Jet trip to Cuba is Joni Menzies from Carberry. The contest, which automatically qualified members of 5 years or more to be entered to win the trip, was announced as a part of Westman’s member appreciation initiative; a way of giving thanks to members who have shown loyalty to Westman as their communications provider. Joni’s name was randomly selected from over 10,000 ballots by Chief Marketing Officer John Quail on December 5 at Westman’s 2015 Annual General Meeting. Westman is proud to present Ms. Menzies, who has been a member for 10 years, with a trip for two (2) valued at approximately $4,000. She and her guest will luxuriate in 7 nights all-inclusive at the 5-Star Paradisus Varadero Resort & Spa in Varadero, Cuba. “Westman is always seeking new avenues to reward our loyal members and this is one of the ways we are saying thank you this year to those who have a long standing membership in our Co-operative,” said John Quail, Chief Marketing Officer at Westman Communications Group. In addition, Westman announced 2015 will be their third year making equity dividend payments to members totalling $500,000. “In addition to the equity members earn through membership with Westman, their continued patronage enables us to continue to grow the Co-operative, which benefits our members and our community,” adds John Quail. Westman values the trust members have placed in Westman as their service provider and hopes to continue to show appreciation in many ways throughout 2016 and years to come. Membership pays!

We now have Story Time at the library every Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Such programs help plant seeds for lifelong learning, stimulate the imagination, and broaden the mind.

Children benefit from hearing a different adult read to them, observing other children get absorbed in a story, and from being exposed to various authors and writing styles. Join our wonderful programmer, Cassie Quadrelli, for 30 to 45 minutes of interactive fun with stories, songs and crafts. Cassie reads various books and helps children get excited about each story. If kids believe they will find fun and excitement in stories, they will not only want to read, but also see it as an exciting social activity. This program is drop-in with no registration required. On Wednesday, December 16, we needed five tables for our cribbage players. Because this was our last cribbage evening of this year, we had free coffee and more prizes were given out. Alva and Don Doherty, again, had the best score of the evening. Next in line were Joan Dufily and Lorna Binions. Darlene Dooley and Isabelle Stephenson took third place. #4 – Mona Canning and Les Morris; # 5 – Viola Logan and Ken Ryckman; # 6 – Betty Devins and Joan Phillips; # 7 – Debbie Robinson and Evelyn Harlton. Mona Canning also won the 50-50 draw. Remember, our next cribbage evening will be on Wednesday, January 6. Our last bingo evening of 2015 on Thursday, December 17, was attended by 38 optimistic noisemakers. Making the most noise was Cindy Balbar with three shouts. Double yells came from Betty Devins, Gladys Skoc and Cheryl Edwards. Cheryl made her last holler on the LITTLE HOUSE, which was

worth $50. Everyone received a Santa gift and free coffee and cookies. Remember, our next bingo evening will be on Thursday, January 7. On Friday, December 18, a large number of people came out to our meat draw. Lady Luck was not favouring many individuals. In fact, only Pat Murphy was able to collect two packages of meat. Plaza Petals donated two poinsettias for the evening, which were won by Ken McBurney and Irwin Harlton. A Christmas candle centrepiece was donated by Cheryl Edwards and Neil Janz. This lovely package was won by Ed Genaille. Lorna Binions held the lucky ticket on the 50-50 draw and received $115. The “Chase the Ace” pot totaled $2,148 and Cherilyn Jackson attempted to take it home. The Ace eluded her and so it will be chased again on Saturday, January 2, 2016. The meat draw will start at 5:00 p.m. The ugly Christmas sweaters were judged after the meat draw and the winner was Randi Noble. Our clubroom will close at 6:00 p.m. on December 24 and reopen on Monday, December 28. On Thursday, December 31, our clubroom will close at 6:00 p.m. However, we will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 1, 2016. All members and guests are welcome to come and enjoy the day.

Bridge results for December 8 were as follows: 1st Barb Janz and Marge Edgerton; 2nd Don and Alva Doherty; 3rd Gordon Powell and Sharon Zilky. Floor Shuffle results for December 9 were as follows: 1st Irene Schmyr and Roy Douglas; 2nd Mary Peterson and John Kuchner; 3rd Catherine Eisthen and Norval More.

There was no “500” on December 10 due to weather conditions. Tuesday, December 15 – Bridge: 1. Elinor Birks and Keith Davison; 2. Don and Elva Doherty; 3. Barb Janz and Marge Edgerton. Wednesday, December 16 – Floor Shuffle: 1. Norval More and Catherine Eisthen; 2. Robert Pearce and Joan Dufily; 3. Eugene Kowalchuck and Carol Urbanowski. Thursday, December 17 – 500: 1. Norval More and Pearl Marshall; 2. Pat Giesbrecht and Gordon Powell; 3. Ralph Jewel and Isabelle Stephenson. On Wednesday, December 16, six club members travelled to Reston for a Bridge Tournament. Don and Alva Doherty managed a third place score.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, As an open letter to Grassland Municipality ratepayers, I wish to explain two cases of what I feel, again, is non-accountability to us by our present council. 1. For the October 19 federal election, Elections Canada discontinued the poll in Elgin. Residents would now have to drive approximately 14 miles, one way, to vote in Minto. Feeling there could be lower voter turnout, Grassland council decided - in a discussion only, not a resolution - to hire the Hartney Handi-Van to run shuttle 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., every two hours, to Minto. This would be a “free service”, courtesy of all Grassland taxpayers. Grassland received a letter outlining my concerns with this decision, for the October 29 meeting. They follow: a) Why no formal resolution for an expense? b) Voters in my area live a comparable dis-

tance from Minto, it has not been an issue. c) It appeared partisan, when our MP’s former home base was - Elgin. d) It is not taxpayers’ duty to provide a service to a select group when this is a federal matter. e) After my 20.8% mill rate increase this year, over 2014, I see how expenses can be swept under the carpet in a large budget. f) I asked for a written reply, stating the total cost for the service and their reasoning. On November 9, the CAO said he had no information, and I would be getting a reply. To date - December 18 - no response. 2. In the November monthly Hartney News, now called Grassland, a full front page by Reeve Blair Woods states how the recycling program will soon see big changes. There is absolutely NO MENTION of any cost figures for their new plan. After budgeting $11,500/year over five years to purchase a building and skid-steer in Elgin, new

they have hired a SASKATCHEWAN contractor to provide recycling services for five years. Other than the MMSM $15,000 grant received for recycling, is it possible council is spending next year’s budget money, once again? The deal is a go, but does council know the total real net cost (before it decided)? This council may appear to be “Enviro-friendly”, but ratepayers need to know all the facts and figures; it should have been sooner, not later. With the concerns expressed by the Elgin Lions Club, why all the secrecy, Grassland? Meeting minutes on the website are about four behind to date, so no information available there since October 13. In summary, over 2014, $53,000 more is being spent on CAO and office staff, and $16,700 more for council. We deserve more professionalism, in my opinion. It appears, like bad politics, with out answers. What do you think? Respectfully yours, Norm Gruhn, Minto

The Selects beat Rylan Rommelaere at 9:54 to regain the lead, only to see Dawson Waddell bang in a loose puck from Brian Harris and Blake Jameson for an even strength goal. The Cougars took a 4-3 lead when Jared McCorrister hooked up with Garret Sambrook and Tristen Cross for the third power play goal of the game. The Selects tied the score at 6:44 and then scored the eventual game-winner on a delayed penalty when a blast from the point found the back of the net.
