Benefit social raises $90,000

The community of Souris and indeed, the entire hockey community, have rallied around Braden Pettinger since his accident that occurred in his first game with the Portage Terriers in November. Braden went awkwardly into the boards and suffered a spinal injury that has left him paralyzed from the chest down. His fellow graduates held a benefit social in Souris on December 26 and raised $90,000 towards assisting with his recovery. Pictured: A volunteer holds up Pettinger’s Waywayseecappo jersey, which garnered $2,400 at the auction. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER by Darci Semeschuk It was more than organizers dreamed possible but when the last bid was in, $90,000 had been raised for the Braden Pettinger fund. Twenty-year-old Braden Pettinger, from Elgin, has suffered a life-altering injury while playing hockey and is now paralyzed. Braden’s Graduating Class of 2013 decided to host a benefit social in hopes of raising money for Braden and his family. The event was booked for December 26 and once the word was out, items for auction were donated

to the cause. Some of the top money makers included: Connor McDavid Oilers signed jersey $4,000; 10 hours use of a combine - $3,200; MazerGroup, 10 hours use of combine - $3,150; Braden Pettinger game worn Wayway jersey- $2,400; Jets team signed jersey and four tickets - $2,400; Four Minnesota Vikings tickets for 2016 - $2,200; Evgeni Malkin signed jersey - $2,100; Jonathan Toews signed jersey - $2,050; Pettinger Portage Terriers jersey - $2,000; Pettinger Triple A Midget jersey $2,000.

The event drew friends, family, hockey players and fans from across Canada, each of them wanting to help in any way they could. Close to 575 people were in attendance and many more tickets were sold on a “unable to attend basis”. In addition to the social, a GoFundMe page, started by MJHL official Bryden Hutlet, raised over $150,000 in just over a month. Braden and his parents remain in Winnipeg where he is undergoing extensive physical therapy.

Christmas Cheer wraps it up for 2015

The Souris Christmas Cheer Board would again like to thank the citizens of Souris and surrounding area for their generosity this Christmas season. Every year we are overwhelmed by the support this project receives. On Friday, December 18, 59 hampers were ready for delivery or pick-up at St. Paul’s United Church. The Board would like to thank St. Paul’s for allowing them to use some of their space for our work. The cash donations, the donations of food and gifts from individuals and organizations in Souris and surrounding area, helped to

make Christmas a little brighter for many families in our community. Westoba and Royal Bank patrons provided a lot of the children’s gifts and the Grade 8 class spent a few hours of their time wrapping all the hamper boxes. Local churches, the Royal Canadian Legion, and Souris Valley Bigway provided boxes for donations and a few families were adopted by groups or individuals who provided all food and gifts for their hampers. Many people outside of the Cheer Board itself helped to pack hampers and make deliveries, which is no small task. We wish to thank ev-

eryone who donated their time so willingly. Also thanks to the people who contacted the Board to submit the name of someone in need or just to offer a helping hand. We should be proud of the fact that we live in such and caring and generous community. I hope we all remember that the things we do for one another at Christmas are important but we need to keep doing “Christmas things” all year through. God bless everyone and Happy New Year from the Souris Christmas Cheer Committee.

Is it the flu or your flue? Many of the symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning have people thinking they are suffering from a common flu. However exposure to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can lead to brain damage or death. Sometimes called the “silent killer”, CO is a toxic, odourless and colourless gas. It is produced when wood and fossil fuels, including heating oil, kerosene, gasoline, diesel, propane or natural gas, burn without enough oxygen. How can CO form in my home or garage? CO can build up in a home because of faulty appliances, a buildup of engine exhaust, blocked chimneys or air vents, or back-drafting of flue gases. It can also happen when fireplaces, wood stoves, kitchen and bathroom fans, clothes dryers, central vacuum systems and heating equipment compete for air. What are symptoms of CO poisoning? A low exposure to CO can result in shortness of breath, and slight headache. Higher concentrations can result in severe headache, dizziness, nausea, mental confusion, difficulty hearing and seeing, fainting, and in extreme cases, death. How can I protect myself and my family from CO poisoning? Preventative maintenance can help you avoid a CO emergency. Have your heating system checked regularly, make sure external vents are unblocked from snow or debris, and if you have a fireplace or chimney, make sure it has a fresh air intake duct. Never use a generator or barbecue indoors as they can create dangerous levels of toxic carbon monoxide very quickly. How can I tell if there is CO in my home? Because CO can’t be detected by the human senses, have a CO detector on every floor in your home. And, if it goes off, don’t turn it off. Treat the alarm as an emergency and call Manitoba Hydro immediately. Test your detector(s) regularly as recommended by the manufacturer. What can I do if I suspect CO poisoning? Leave the house immediately to get fresh air and call 911 for help. If you suspect equipment malfunction, call Manitoba Hydro for an emergency inspection at 1-888-MB HYDRO

The Southwest Cougars kicked off 2016 with a 3-1 win over Central Plains on January 2 and a 4-1 win over Interlake on January 3. The Cougars are back home on January 16 and 17 when they host Norman and the Wild. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Southwest Cougars by Grant Moffatt The Cougars got back on the ice in the new year and picked up a pair of wins. The Cougars knocked off the Central Plains Capitals 3-1 on Saturday night and cruised to a 4-1 win over the Interlake Lightning on Sunday afternoon to improve to 13-14-2 moving them into 8th place with 28 points. The Cougars now trail Brandon and Kenora by a single point. Saturday night the Cougars opened the scoring when Grady

Hobbs hooked up with Dawson Waddell and Quin Hobbs midway in the first. The Cats made it a 2 goal game when John Patmore scored from Brian Harris at 9:27 of the second. The Capitals broke Brady Gordon’s shutout bid when they banged in a loose puck at the 15 minute mark of the period. The third period saw the Cougars protecting the 2-1 lead. The Capitals got Duncan McGovern on the bench with just over 2 minutes remaining. The Cougars had a couple of chances

to end the game as Carson Boyechko hit the post and then John Patmore missed a wide open net with time winding down. Brian Harris finally sprang McCullough Park who went in and dented the twine as the Cougars picked up their 12th win of the year. Brady Gordon turned aside 37 shots in the win. Brian Harris had a strong game and earned the Subway Player of the Game. The Interlake Lightning rolled into town Sunday afternoon and opened the scoring 6 minutes into the game. John Patmore evened the score a minute later when Jared Janke set him up from behind the net to tie the game. The Cougars scored 3 unanswered goals in the second period

on their way to the 4-1 final. Tristen Cross sprung Dawson Waddell who went in all alone at the 8 minute mark and scored the eventual winner. Jared Janke gave the Cougars some insurance when he hooked up with Carson Boyechko and Jay Webber for the 2 goal lead a couple of minutes later. McCullough Park finished the scoring when he took a feed from Tanner Gaudry at 13:48. Brady Gordon picked up his third win in a row turning aside 22 shots. McCullough Park earned the Subway Player of the Game. The Cougars hit the road for games in Eastman and Interlake next weekend before returning to face Norman on January 16 and the Wild on the following afternoon.

OBITUARY MARTIN It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Jean (John) Joseph Nicolas Martin at the Souris Personal Care Home on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. John was born on the family farm in the RM of Cameron on July 8, 1926, the only son of Henry and Marie. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are Bernie, his wife of 63 years; children, Claude (Diane) Martin, Lionel (Bernie) Martin, Val (Darcy) Dunbar, and Gail Feser; grandchildren, Bryce Martin, Andrea (Derek) Rothnie, Dillon (Erin) Dunbar, Mylen Dunbar, Riley Feser, Kalli Feser and Shea Martin; great-grandchildren Asher and Aria Rothnie and Jaxon Dunbar. John attended Grand Bend School, and after his fatherʼs passing in 1955, John was left to manage the family farm. He was very proud of his roots, and was delighted when his farm received its Century Designation in 1998. John was a very active community member, serving as Councillor for the RM of Cameron for 10 years. He was also involved as a school trustee, and was a member of Manitoba Conservation, St. Jeanʼs Parish, and Manitoba Foresters. His 42 years as a Portage Mutual Insurance agent was his most rewarding venture, and he thoroughly enjoyed socializing with many of his loyal clients. Rural farm life meant hard work and countless happy memories - raising children, milking cows, stacking hay, taking his dogs for walks, and rides on his yellow trike. John loved music, especially Lawrence Welk, and he and Bernie attended many dances and card games. He was an avid sports enthusiast and regularly watched his children play ball. He also enjoyed watching curling and was a devoted Blue Jays fan. He will be remembered for his positivity, humour, and his “great smile”. He lived his life with meaning, kindness, and conviction. A celebration of Johnʼs life was held on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at St. Jeanʼs Catholic Church, Grande Clairiere. The family would like to extend many thanks for the care and compassion given to our husband, father, and grandfather over the last two years by the doctors and staff at the Souris Personal Care Home. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider the Souris Hospital Palliative Care Fund, c/o Prairie Mountain Health, Box 10, Souris, Manitoba, ROK 2CO. Kowalchukʼs Funeral Home, Souris, in care of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy dkowalchuk@mymts.net.

Solutions & Substitutions by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, We have a seven year old Sil Granite sink. Its colour has really faded. Before it was a very matt black now it is a very faded black with white smears streaks. We used a colour enhancer product provided when I bought the sink. I have used two bottles of that which has not helped. Any chance you have a gem of an idea to get the smears off and somewhat of the colour back? Damien Dear Damien, Your best bet is to wipe the sink with cooking or olive oil after use. This will remove all of the stains, repel water from sitting on the sink and forming white stains and brighten the sink. Dear Reena, I would like to prepare my own rub for meat. Can you give me an easy recipe that I can use on pork? Heidi Dear Heidi, Here is an easy recipe which is perfect for about 6 pounds of meat. Into a bowl combine one quarter cup sugar, 4 tbsp. black pepper, one tbsp. salt, one quarter cup paprika, 2 tsp. dry mustard and 2 tsp. cayenne pepper. Rub half of the mixture onto meat 12 hours prior to cooking. Rub the other half on right before cooking. Dear Reena, I so enjoy reading your column. We have a water stain on our popcorn ceiling and were told to try Kilz overhead stain sealer. Now we have a yellow discoloration on top of the stain! Any suggestions?

Wendy Dear Wendy, Kilz is a popular brand name but there are many products under this name, from Flat Wall and Ceiling Paint to Colour Changing Ceiling Paint to Paint with Stain Blocking. You may need to prime the area before painting the ceiling but your best bet is to explain your situation to your paint specialist and seek advice. Or contact the Kilz website and query which product is best for your situation. Dear Reena, How do I go about fixing my yellowed microwave door, help? Jen Dear Jen, This may be a permanent condition but don’t give up without a fight! Spread toothpaste onto the yellowed area. Dampen the brush with water and scrub with an old toothbrush. Rinse with water and wipe. Dear Reena, I have always read your column with interest and have used many of your helpful hints. I hope you can help me with this problem. I presently have a set of lamps given to me by my late parents. They have a glass base and I wonder if they can be painted as we have changed our decor/colors. If so, what type of paint might be used? Thank-you! O. Dear O, Yes, you can absolutely paint the glass base! Begin by unplugging the lamp and cleaning the base well with plain old dish soap and water. Dry and

cover any electrical wires. Spray on heatproof paint in the colour of your choice. Dear Reena, Why do people deep fry turkeys instead of baking them. I was given a deep fryer specifically for this purpose but I haven’t used it. Is it worth the effort? Nana Dear Nana, I have a friend that heads down to the US every November for American Thanksgiving just because her dad deep fries the turkey. She says it is the best way to prepare turkey and nothing beats the flavour. Deep frying turkey is a Cajun tradition that produces juicy meat and crispy skin. Many people agree it is out of this world. Fabulous Tips of the Week • Why throw out empty toilet paper rolls when you can use them to store messy electrical cords. Wind the cord and place it inside the tube. Some people even decorate the tube with wall or shelf paper. • Never let your toilet paper run away from the roll again. Either squeeze the roll in half before placing it on the toilet paper holder (great if you own an RV) or position the roll so that the paper hangs under the roll instead of overtop. Note: Every user assumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. Test all products on an inconspicuous area first. I enjoy your questions and tips, keep them coming. Need a Presenter on the topic: Effective Speaking or The Power of Words? Check out: Reena.ca

Snowmobile safe while having fun While snowmobilers expect the unexpected, they can help protect themselves from serious injury Long-time snowmobiler Joe Thievin knows that even if you’re riding with care, the unexpected can happen. “I was enjoying a beautiful trail in the middle of nowhere when a part in my suspension failed. It sent me crashing into the trees and pinned me under my sled,” said

Joe who works as a project coordinator at Manitoba Hydro. “I broke my arm, six ribs, my thumb and had a collapsed lung.” Joe explains that any number of unexpected things can happen out on the trails, including run-ins with wildlife. “I hit a deer once,” said Joe who added that he was glad it wasn’t a moose. “Wildlife hits are more common than you’d think, especially in low-visibility

We’re here when you’re ready. Call 1-855-662-6605 Manitoba Addictions Helpline

conditions since the animals tend to hang out on the trail.” Joe credits safety guidelines with keeping himself and many riders alive and healthy. “I have a GPS, a spot tracker and a cell phone with enough batteries on me when I head out,” said Joe. “I also tell someone where I’m going, when I’m going to be back and as a rule, don’t ride at night.” As a Manitoba Hydro employee, Joe also is very aware of some other hazards to snowmobilers. Keep these ground rules in mind when you’re hitting the trails this winter: Reduce your speed around utility poles. Guy wires attached to the poles normally have yellow covers to make them more visible, but sometimes the covers have been damaged or removed, or they are difficult to see because they are covered by drifting snow. Darkness, fog, and blowing snow can

make them difficult to spot and avoid. Stay off waterways near hydroelectric dams and generating stations where fluctuating water levels and currents may result in thin and unstable ice conditions. Steer clear of downed poles and power lines. Nearby objects can be energized by a live power line, so avoid the entire area. Report the danger by calling Manitoba Hydro as soon as possible. If someone does make contact with a downed power line, either directly or through their machine, do not touch them or any objects around them. Call 911. Avoid the areas around hydro substations and any other hydroelectric facilities. Private property and unmarked terrain can contain unexpected and deadly hazards. Find more information on snowmobile safety, visit hydro.mb.ca/ safety/outdoors.
