Fundraiser held in Elgin for Braden Pettinger submitted by Adelle Woods A fundraiser was held on March 5 in Elgin to support Braden Pettinger following his hockey injury in November 2015. We were pleased to be able to offer our community support from his friends and neighbours. Both attendance and support tickets were quickly sold for an evening of entertainment, auction and socializing. Corny Rempel provided his rendition of Johnny Cash that was equally impressive with vocals and humor. Corny even threw in songs as Ray Charles and Willie Nelson. Very impressive talent! The Committee would like to thank all the people and businesses that donated and sponsored auction and bucket items for the evening.

Bridge results for March 8 are as follows: 1st Don and Alva Doherty; 2nd Ileen Fenwich and Margaret Greaves; 3rd Sharon Zelkey and Gordon Powell. Floor Shuffle results for March 9 are as follows: 1st Eugene Kowalchuk and Carol Urbanowski; 2nd Dot Palmer and Elsie Kruk; 3rd Tom Draper and Ralph Jewel. 500 results for March 10 are as follows: 1st Ron Ramsey and Norval More; 2nd Don Doherty and Darlene Dooley; 3rd Grant Ewen and Elsie Kruk. On March 6 six members attended a Bridge tournament

in Reston. Don and Alva Doherty won first and Bob Arbuckle and Gordon Powell got second. On March 11 four members went to Oak Lake for a Table Shuffle tournament. On March 12 our annual Irish Stew supper was held when over 70 people enjoyed a delicious meal and the entertainment after was the Twilighters. It was a great Irish night! On March 14 two members went to Hamiota for a Floor Shuffle tournament. They won 3 of 5 games. A fun time was reported by all who attended these events.

We would also like to show our appreciation to everyone who bid on the live auction items and silent auction items, purchased bucket raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets as well those who made generous donations. The entertainment, lunch and hall costs were covered by sponsors as well. We are sure to miss someone on the list of generous people and businesses, so we will just give our genuine thanks to all!! We would also lie to acknowledge the Elgin and Area volunteer fire department for very capably manning the bar. They looked quite impressive in their new shirts that were generously given in recognition for their volunteer efforts throughout the year. Braden’s father, Rick, was able to be in at-

Short term fitness goals Short term goals can be one of the most powerful ones you can make. They give you an opportunity to start fresh and not worry about how long it will go for. Therefore, you know the exact end date you can strive for and you will do just about anything until that point. Why are they so effective? It is because you don’t have to worry about when you are going to do it again. It makes for amazing results and often even turns into more short term goals and even long term habits. Short term fitness goals are the most common at this time of the year due to new optimism from the great weather and the sun shining. Whether it be wanting to look good for your graduation, an upcoming summer wedding, you haven’t seen your family in ages and want to surprise them, and/or want to get a group together with friends/ coworkers, people want to start being active while the weather is nice! It is the perfect time and Outperforme is here to help. Starting in the month of April, Outperforme will be starting a new challenge called the April Attendance Challenge. We are calling for all of the individuals or groups we mentioned above to start a new short term goal and see if you can stick with it. We will help you track your progress for one month and hopefully get you started on your summer goals. Outperforme is always contacted this time of the year and we noticed that there is a great deal of people who want a short term goal that they want to reach by summer, but have no clue where to start. We invite you to contact us so we can help you in your process.

tendance and spoke of his son’s continuing improvement and therapy. Rick expressed how grateful and overwhelmed Braden and his family have been with all the encouragement, support and comfort they have received since Braden’s injury. Through the support and generosity of the residents and friends of the community, we are proud to say that we raised almost $39,000 to financially support Braden. We also send everyone’s personal best wishes in his future efforts on his journey. The Committee members were Maralee and Cam Dodds, Marg and John Spratt, Cherilyn and Darryl Jackson, Meagan and Scott Perkin and Blair and Ardelle Woods. What is the least amount of time needed for a short term goal? Training for a short term goal is similar to trying to cram for a final exam the night before, it just doesn’t work. You need to do it for an extended period in adequate doses. April is the perfect time to start thinking about your June, July, and August goals! The April Attendance Challenge will be happening both in our Brandon & Souris locations. Words To Think About: Instead of saying “ You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” why not say “You’re never too old to learn!” Another cute saying, “When retired at least you don’t have to get up so early”! to which came a reply of “If you can get up early to go to work, you can get up early to play”! Wise thought here! It was once said by George Bernard Shaw that firewood should warm you up three times: once cutting it down and carry it home, once when you chop it up and again when you use it to heat your home or sheds. Well, that’s all for this week so please take care and we hope to hear from you soon.

Cribbage players needed 5 ½ tables on Wednesday, March 9. The best score of the evening was made by Viola Logan with Ken Ryckman. The second and third prizes were split between Amelia Morden with Cindy Janz and Donna Scott with Laura Symons. Ken Ryckman said he had gotten an unlucky ticket but somehow his number was drawn for the 50-50

prize. We had 22 people ready to shout “Bingo” on Thursday, March 10. Making three hollers were Cathy Nylund, Marion Morris, Roberta Dodd, and Gale Collinson. The Looney Pot was worth $22 and shared by Roberta and Gale. Double yells came from Alys Will, Joan Phillips, and Darlene Dooley. The Little House, worth $32, was won on Darlene’s last call. Our meat draw on Friday, March 11, was a busy evening. Some people had a little more luck than others. Able to take home two packages of meat were Marie Neilson, Lyall Edgerton, and Larry Robbins. The 50-50 draw was worth $130 and the winning ticket belonged to Chris Demer. Jeff Kohut attempted to find the Ace of Spades and put $3,600.50 in his pocket. However, the Ace stayed hidden and someone will get a chance at it next week. Four of our members, Amelia Morden, Evelyn Harlton, Cindy Janz and Gale Collinson,

travelled to Roblin on the weekend to compete in the Provincial Cribbage Tournament. The cards were a little unfriendly, and even though they finished near the top in each of the three events, they could not reach the winner’s circle. Despite this, they had a good time because the camaraderie at these events is always very enjoyable. Remember, our next meal will be on Saturday, March 19. This is also our Funspeil curling day. Hope you have signed up for the curling. If you haven’t, you will miss out on a lot of fun. If you only want to come out for a great meal, please contact the clubroom. The meal cost is only $15.

Solutions & Substitutions

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I was given several boxes of potato chips from my ex-husband. Other than stuffing my face with them or giving them to friends, what can I use them for and do they ever expire? Do they last longer if you freeze them? Why are potato chip bags only three quarter full (if that)? Sincerely, Ellen Dear Ellen, Store chips in a cool, dry place. They do have an expiration date which is printed on each bag. Stores are not allowed to shelve chips after the expiration date. Consumed slightly after this date, they are normally safe however, after a while they will taste stale. If you open a bag and smell a rancid odor, the oil in the chips has gone bad. The chips will then smell and taste (in my opinion) like feet. Unopened potato chips can be stored in the freezer for up to one year. Thaw in the fridge. Because potato chips are fragile, other than eating them, there isn’t much use for them. They work well for breading meats such as; pork, chicken and salmon. Or sprinkle crushed potato chips over a casserole to give it a crunchy texture. Potato chips are not individually counted; they are weighed using a computerized system before bagging. The reason why bags are only partially full is because a certain amount of air must be in each package to prevent breakage during shipping. Extra tip: If you ever have the desire to make your own homemade chips. Use

Idaho Russet potatoes and either peanut or canola oil. The easiest way to slice potatoes evenly is either with: A meat slicer, food processor, cheese grater or a vegetable peeler. Hi Reena, I bought and used washing soda recently because of its mention in your column. I used it to whiten my white cotton t-shirts and shirts, and found it amazing! I love having crisp white cotton t-shirts in both my summer and winter wardrobes but so often they take on a grey tinge and become yellowish under the arms. I have tried everything; soaking in detergent, washing with a bit of bleach, hanging to dry in direct sunshine, etc. nothing was a real solution, and I often discarded perfectly good clothing because it looked so dingy. Washing soda is remarkably cheap, too! I soaked my whites in a solution overnight, washed them on a “whites” cycle with a small amount of bleach, and then hung them up to dry, to my delight, they actually sparkled. Now I soak many things my white cotton pillowcases, my cream tablecloth (with various stains attached), my light colored tea towels, etc. At present, I just soak items in a solution of washing soda (as directed on the top of the box), lightly wring them out and wash them in my HE washing machine. The box recommends adding washing soda to the wash too, but I haven’t done this because there are no HE washing machine instructions/amounts given. Can I add washing soda to my HE washer without problems? How much should I use? I’d love to do this to boost the overall cleaning of my laundry. Keep up the excellent work, glad there is Leslie Chudley a website to look at, too. Sales Associate Regards, Marilyn Dear Marilyn, Cell: 204-761-0421 I too have been impressed with washing

soda over the years and I normally add about one quarter cup to my front loading washing machine loads. I have not had any problems with my machine, because the washing soda actually cleans clothes and the washing machine hoses at the same time. Washing soda is sometimes hard to find, and in those cases either borax or baking soda make adequate substitutes. If I have a very bad stain, I normally make a paste of washing soda and water and apply it to the stain. Wait 15 minutes and wash as normal. Repeat if necessary. Dear Reena, My husband uses Tilex shower spray (the spray and walk away kind) by the gallon in his bathroom shower. There was a homemade spray recipe we had cut out of the newspaper and promptly lost and can’t find again. Can you help? Thanks, Edna Dear Edna, In a spray bottle combine: One half cup liquid laundry detergent, half cup vinegar and 3 cups of water. No need to rinse or dry. Continuing on with the Canada Reads books……… The Hero’s Walk, by Anita Rau Badami, is a rather ‘traditional’ book in both story and presentation. At its core is Sripathi Rao, a very conventional man increasingly faced with challenges to the beliefs he holds dear. We enter his life when his daughter and her husband are killed in a car accident. Estranged from his daughter since she defied his wishes and married outside the culture nine years previously, for Sripathi this is yet one more failure in a lifetime filled with such. Raised by very demanding parents, and still caring for an absolute harridan of a mother, Sripathi sees himself as having fallen well short of both expectation and potential. He strives to uphold outdated traditions of caste, class, and gender roles while these very things are being flouted (in his view) not only by his daughter but increasingly by his son, sister and wife. Even his best friend tries to gently move Sripathi toward a more inclusive and accepting view of life. As his world crumbles around him, Sri spirals into despair as he comes to recognise, however slightly, the magnitude of his losses and of his role in them. The women in this story are by far the stronger characters, and ultimately the dénouement arrives through their actions, with Sripathi emerging, one hopes, into at least a somewhat more progressive and accepting view of life. The author has stated that the novel is

about loss, disappointment, choices and the importance of coming to terms with yourself and the circumstances of your life without losing the dignity embedded in all of us. It has also been described as being about the difficult road towards forgiveness and self forgiveness, letting go and embracing new ways in the name of love. The final entry in this year’s Canada Reads programme is Bone and Bread, by Saleema Nawaz. It is the story of two sisters, Beena and Sadhana, extremely close in early childhood but following very divergent paths as young adults. The deaths of their father, when they are very young, and their mother, when they are teenagers, leave the two girls orphaned and scarred. Sadhana becomes obsessive and ultimately anorexic. Beena looks for love in the arms of a shop boy and becomes pregnant. As the book opens, Beena is mourning Sadhana’s sudden and unexpected death. Guilt plagues her for a number of reasons. Having assumed the mantle of care for her sister, Beena is consumed with the fear that Sadhana’s death resulted from a reoccurrence of her disease – a reoccurrence Beena failed to notice and deal with. She feels guilty for the jealousy she harboured toward Sadhana because of the easy relationship her sister had with her (Beena’s) son. And she is haunted by the knowledge that Sadhana’s death not only followed closely on the heels of a significant argument the two had but worse, went unnoticed for a full week. As Beena sets about the various tasks that necessarily follow the death of a family member, she inevitably uncovers much truth about their relationship, and of her relationships with her uncle, son and lover. It is a book as much about the solitary lives we all live even within close families as about sibling rivalry, and about how much we really don’t know about those we love, or indeed about ourselves.

Southwest Horizon School Division minutes continued from page 8 • Grief, Loss and Trauma - All SHSD guidance counselors will attend this CFS sponsored workshop in Brandon in May. • PD Plan for 2016/17 - Senior and School Administration plan to move forward in establishing Professional Learning Communities with interested staff in 2016/17. One of the largest hurdles to overcome in order for a PLC to be successful is finding time for collaboration. Our plan is to provide one half day a month for each PLC to work together in their own school while substitute teachers provide instruction to their students. We will use the Division PD budget to pay for teams of prebooked subs. -September 6 - Intro to PLC (prepared presentation from Senior Admin) -Division PD - September 26 - Restitution -October 21- SAGE/Lift – PLCs work in their schools -November - team of subs - Division will pre-book subs for school teams -December - team of subs supplied by Division -January - team of subs supplied by Division -February 27 - Division day for PLCs -March - team of subs by Division -April - team of subs by Division -May - team of subs by Division -June 30 – in school admin day Secretary-Treasurer report to the Board included the following: • Teacher Collective Agreement - the Collective Agreement between the Southwest Horizon Teachers’ Association and the Southwest Horizon School Division was officially signed and dated on March 1, 2016. We expect to fulfill our obligation for any retroactive payments by March 11, 2016. • Motor Carrier Enforcement Audit - Our Transportation Department was involved in a Motor Carrier Enforcement Audit on March 4, 2016. This audit is conducted every five years and looks at the Transportation Department’s entire process from how often school bus safeties are conducted, preventative maintenance

schedules and documentation, hours of service, driver logs and payroll information. I am extremely happy to report that our Transportation Department received a verbal passing grade of 100% and that it was noted that they go over and beyond what is expected. This is an amazing accomplishment and one to be very proud of. I truly believe this accomplishment is a result of the great teamwork in the Transportation Department and their dedication to their role in the school division. • Souris School Water Damage Claim – We have received the Souris School Water Damage Claim information from the adjusters, James Dube Spraggs. We have submitted our claim for the costs of the damages directly to James Dube Spraggs. • We have received a letter from Minister James Allum, Education and Advanced Learning, and Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross, Family Services, asking for proposals for new Child Care space within school divisions. The Family Choices Building Fund provides capital funding support to projects which will establish a new early learning and child care (ELCC) centre or will renovate to expand an existing ELCC centre to increase the availability of licensed non-profit child care spaces. The focus of this FCBF application intake is to support the creation of ELCC centres located within public school settings. The fund will provide up to 100% support for capital expenditures and the deadline for submissions is June 30, 2016. As such, we have begun discussions with two daycares in two of our schools. Highlighted calls for service in Souris RCMP area were as follows: • On March 7: A report of mischief to a vehicle on 1st St. S. was received by Souris RCMP. Unknown culprits smashed the vehicle’s window, while it was parked in front of a local business. At this time, it is unclear how the window offended someone. • On March 12: Souris RCMP received a dispatch of a missing youth, however the parent quickly called back to report he was found. On the same day, Police were dispatched to assist staff at the Souris Hospital with an agitated patient. Police aided transport to another facility. Fraud Alert: Part 4 Money Transfer Requests (aka The Advance Fee Fraud)

Money transfer scams are on the rise. Be very careful when someone offers you money to help transfer their money. Once you send money to someone, it can be very difficult, if not impossible, to get it back. Protect yourself: • If you have been approached by someone asking you to transfer money for them, it is probably a scam. • Never send money, or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust. • Don’t accept a cheque or money order for payment for goods that is more than what you agreed upon, even if it’s on local websites like Souris Swap & Shop or eBrandon. Send it back and ask the buyer to send you payment for the agreed amount before

you deliver the goods or services. Better yet, deal in cash which is much harder to counterfeit than a cheque or money order! • Examine the information on the Canadian AntiFraud Centre website for information on how to protect yourself against money transfer scams. • Ask yourself: Is it really safe to transfer money for someone I do not know?
