Page 2, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, March 25, 2016 On Wednesday, March 16, we used six tables for our Cribbage players. Once again, Viola Logan and Ken Ryckman finished the evening with the highest score. But this time, Ken did not win the 50-50 draw. Alva and Don Doherty claimed second prize and the third spot went to Mona Canning with Les Morris. The 50-50 draw went to Evelyn Harlton. On Thursday, March 17, 21 optimistic noise makers showed up to play Bingo and there was a

lot of noise. Making three shouts were Linda Swaenepoel, Marion Morris and Lee Johnson. Double hollers came from Joan Phillips, Gladys Skoc, Betty Devins and Alys Will. Norm Davis sat very quietly through most of the evening and then yelled on the Little House to receive $33. On Friday, March 18, our meat draw was well attended and winning tickets were spread over the clubroom. In fact, the only person to be able to collect two meat packages was Scott Murray. Delores Genaille held the lucky number for the 50-50 draw and received $172. The pot for “Chase the Ace” totalled $3,792.50 and the opportunity to take it home was won by Gladys Lovatt. Once again, the Ace refused to cooperate and so we will offer it again next week. REMEMBER - Friday, March 25, is Good Friday
missing youth from the rural area of Souris-Glenwood was reported. All of the youth were located and returned home on both days. At some point between March 14 and 15, a brown Ford F350 was stolen from the transfer station (Town dump) off of Highway 2. Police are seeking info regarding this crime. On March 20, an unknown complainant reported that a fight was going on outside a local bar. Police attended the location and found 40-

so our meat draw will be on Saturday, March 26, starting at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, March 19, was our fun curling day and it was very apparent that all who participated in it had a good time. We had 18 teams playing two 6-end games. Thank you to all of the teams who came from other areas to be a part of the fun. The highest score was made by Darren Janz’s team but that only meant that they got to pick their prizes first. Everyone who curled received a prize. Everyone was able to partake of a hot lunch and a supper of ham, sweet & sour meatballs, baked potato, macaroni salad, marinated carrots, buns, all the trimmings and Black Forest cake. There was a bit of hollering and booing when the “stand alone” cooler was won by Gale Collinson. I am sure that this curling event will be on again next year.
50 people outside the bar, waiting for rides. No fight was observed. After interviewing several patrons, it was determined that it was just a verbal tiff between pals. Police made patrols in and around the area afterwards but determined that their presence makes everyone happy! All is peaceful in our sleepy, little town. Fraud Alert: Part 5 Internet Scams The internet isn’t just for teens.
To quote Nat King Cole, it’s now for “kids from one to ninety-two!” (forgive the Christmas reference, it’s snowing!) If you spend even a little bit of time on the internet, it’s time to brush up on jargon! Spam is unsolicited emails send to people every day. Be wary of replying, even just to “unsubscribe” because that will give the scammer confirmation that they have reached a real email address.
Sierra swings through Souris Souris and District Arts Council was pleased to present Sierra Noble in concert on Thursday, February 25. Sierra remembers, as a child, competing in Souris in a fiddling contest, and now, as an adult, has returned to our Community Hall as a wellknown fiddler and an accomplished singer/ songwriter. Kris Ulrich on acoustic guitar and vocals and Paul Yee on bass accompanied her on stage. Sierra now spends much of her time in Nashville but still enjoys “coming home” to Manitoba. Watch for details for the final concert of the 2015- 2016 concert series in April, when the Royal Canadian Air Force Showband “Jetstream” will take the stage in our Community Hall. PHOTO/SUBMITTED

Well, that last snowfall sure brightened things up. It is still snowing and gently blowing around. It smells so fresh and clean outside, and I’m sure the snow will be gone by the time you read this. It’s slushy outside and the snow is really wet and heavy for shoveling, so go slow and take a break as needed. Walking outside today will mean rain boots or duck boots to keep you feet dry! We had Dale and Brenda Lyons here to entertain us with their keyboard and guitar. They both sang and it was a real treat and enjoyed by all those who came. We had a wonderful turnout. Having some help is like having a new friend. Words To Think About: It seems we always want what we don’t have. Here is a prime example: If only I was slim one girl cried, ignoring her kind heart inside, her lovely hair, her silky skin, she only wished she was thin! Another one said: These awful lines make me look old, another cried, whose heart was gold, her gentle face and blue-eyed twinkle, have lost their fight with many a wrinkle. Another’s legs were too long, her figure great, but her straight hair was her pet hate. Though beautiful and fair, she wished she had curly hair. Not satisfied, we want the lot, not grateful for the things we’ve got. But none of these should cause us pride. Real beauty is what’s there inside. Written by Chrissy Greenslade. Wise thought here - To be happy you should have something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for! Love, hope, wisdom, friendship, all are great gifts. But the greatest by far is love. Hoping this finds everyone well and happy. We hope to hear from you soon. Call the office and we will come to you or you are most welcome to come by the office.

I recently came across this lovely quote from a noted author: “A narrator should not supply interpretations of his work; otherwise he would not have written a novel, which is a machine for generating interpretations.” What an absolutely perfect description of novels: machines for generating interpretations. For me, this became particularly relevant with my reading of Yann Martel’s The High Mountains of Portugal. I have to confess, it was a book which sent me
off to find out what other people were seeing in it - and this when I was but part way through it. I was that lost. Thankfully, I discovered that most others were too and so felt somewhat better. I also have to confess that I remain confused, even after finishing it and thinking on it for several weeks. The confusion begins at the very outset with, of all things, the title. The High Mountains of Portugal. Well, as that same noted author (not Martel) stated: “one of the chief obstacles [in not revealing the meaning of novels] is the fact that a novel must have a title. A title, unfortunately, is in itself a key to interpretation.” Well, o.k. That gives us a clue. The high mountains referred to in the title turn out not to be mountains at all. Not even hills, but instead huge boulders located on a mythic plateau where, apparently, not only do men go seeking enlighten-
ment, but the mythic Iberian rhinoceros still wanders about. But I am getting ahead of myself. The High Mountains of Portugal is not a novel so much as a collection of three loosely linked short stories. At the core is a religious relic which finds its way into those high mountains. The first story tells of Tomás, a museum archivist, who learns of the relic and sets off to locate it. Almost the entirety of his story revolves around his attempts to reach the high mountains in his uncle’s car – a vehicle newly invented which he does not know how to drive. Some of his subsequent ‘adventures’ are humorous but they go on far too long and the chapter, for me, became boring very quickly. The second story was not boring, simply incomprehensible. Focusing on one very long night in the life of a pathologist, it starts with his wife engaging in some-
thing of a monologue relating theological concepts to Agatha Christie mysteries, then undergoes an abrupt shift as a strange woman arrives requesting an autopsy of her husband – whom she just happens to have with her in her suitcase. The third story tells of Peter Tovy who, grieving the loss of his wife, takes on the care of a research chimp, relocates them both to Portugal, and eventually visits those high mountains. The stories do share common elements: lost love, chimpanzees, walking backwards, and, of course, the high mountains. Ultimately an exploration of love and loss, the book was just too surreal in some respects and downright boring in others to appeal to me. I sincerely wish I could have liked it better. But it left me deeply unsatisfied and still rather confused. Which for any novel is the most unsatisfying ‘interpretation’ of all.

a fix on your spending, focus your attention instead on how you will spend going forward. For example, estimate every expense you expect over the next year, from your morning coffee to groceries to clothes to travel. Break those totals down to monthly amounts and start thinking about which expenses you can trim or eliminate. For example: • Buy online versions of magazines, which may be cheaper than print versions • Consider downgrading your cable subscription (do you really need all those channels?), • Opt for a less-expensive cell phone package or get a family plan that shares minutes • Switch to a slower Internet broadband speed at home • Bringing lunch to work vs. buying lunch each day • Choose the coffee over the latte Right away, you may see opportunities to save $50 or more per week. That’s at least $200 a month and, if you kick in a little more, you are well on your way to contributing sizeably toward that RRSP or TFSA. Worried you will forget to do it and fall out of the savings habit? Set up a pre-authorized payment into your RRSP and or TFSA on a weekly or monthly basis. You likely won’t even miss that $50 a week and will be surprised to see how quickly it may accumulate. Armed with this knowledge of where your money is flowing, you can begin working with your Edward Jones advisor to take small steps greater savings by idenDOLORES CALDWELL - 2006 PONTI- to tifying how you can reAC G6 direct your discretionary R0011212703 cash to fund your future CP01 retirement or other life goals. A systematic investment plan does not assure a profit or protect against loss. Such a plan involves continuous investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels. The next time you’re out with friends or travelling to work, look at the person on your left. Then, look at the person on your right. One of the three of you has absolutely no idea how much money he or she spends on a regular basis and is likely missing out on key opportunities to build-up retirement savings. According to a 2012 national omnibus survey commissioned by Edward Jones about one-third of Canadians do not keep track of their spending. The survey found 38.5% of the remaining respondents track every penny and about 30% at least monitor fixed expenses, such as utilities, car payments, housing costs and similar essentials. It’s no surprise young adults (ages 18-34) are least likely to track their spending, while those above age 65 are most likely. An interesting survey result, though, shows those earning below $40,000 annually and those making above $100,000 a year are both more likely to track expenses. This suggests good money management habits, such as tracking spending, are important regardless of wealth or income levels. So, what difference does it really make to know how much you spend on discretionary items like lattes, clothing and vacations? If you add them up over the course of a year, you will see small choices you make with money can affect your ability to reach goals for later years. Try tracking your spending for a while, but don’t stress about money mistakes that have already Phone 204-483-5200 happened. Once you have Fax 204-483-5203
