BENEATH the veil

Art Director & Stylist, Sarah Hussain of Breath of Henna has created a story that every woman has experienced. The ‘Everyday Bridal’ narrative portrays the woman of today; the working woman, the Artist, the Doctor, the Linguist. Whoever she may be, she is motivating, enchanting and leaves a memorable impression for decades. She is the Bride of the Era. Photographer, Henny Hwang of Hennygraphy captures our beautiful muse, Danika Kinnear’s gaze in every alluring still. Traditionally, South Asian Brides are shown with long luxurious hair. Styling this shoot, we decided to transform the norms using a short haired model which leaves the viewer curious. Stepping away from the traditional Bridal look, the viewer now realizes the Bride for who she is and wants to know what lies beyond the stereotype. Devoted to tradition, the gorgeous, four-piece Sabyasachi Lengha from Chandan Fashion was the syrup on the gulab jamun. This blossoming trend has encouraged many brides to now take on their own stories and voice them through their weddings. Decor details display a personalized ambiance filled with lavender incense. The engagement ring and fresh water pearl bracelets by Alexis Gallery are set into intimate casings to signify memoirs which are defining elements for a bride when journeying onwards. Allana Davis of Makeuplady.ca enhances Danika’s features with a dewy, spirited look. The seducing subtle movements of her eyes are in sync with her henna-covered fingertips as she approaches the camera from beneath her veil. The warmth in the ambiance created on set is astounding. Paisleys, rich woods and natural light create an uplifting still. The Bride begins to dance and invites the outsider to be a part of her moment. The floral crown and bouquet by Floraville accentuate her forever free spirit and are refreshing elements. In short time, under pressure without any other hand, she prepares for her greatest leap of faith. Danika has you on your toes with her contorted poses as she welcomes the world with her playful, yet powerful gaze. We enjoy the eclectic mix between traditional and modern references seen in the set design and props. The veil gives life to the woman underneath, uplifting her essence and refreshing her roots. When up close, it is seen as an enclosure to the foreigner but it is an enticing and ethereal cosmos known only to her, and if one were to steal a glance they would surely be overwhelmed by its expansiveness. The portraits leave one breathless and forever remembering the woman under the veil. The portraits relinquish our physicality and captivate our souls; the beholder retains the imprints and they are infinitely engraved into their senses.

Tamanna Roashan INTERNATIONAL BEAUTY MOGUL

Meet Tamanna Roashan, the woman behind the globally acclaimed DressYourFace empire, and the #1 single most sought-after International Beauty Educator in the world. Coming from a family of musicians, writers, poets, painters and photographers, Tamanna Roashan was always surrounded in a world full of creativity and art of all mediums. It was only natural for her to explore and excel in anything related to art and creation. In the perfect setting of California’s glamorous facade, she dove right in to the beauty industry and obtained her professional cosmetology license by age 18, as well as several certificates from the Makeup Institute for Advanced Makeup Techniques, Bridal Makeup, and Photography/Fashion Makeup, all while pursuing a BA in Marketing. Immediately upon obtaining her credentials and launching her business name, “DressYourFace” started becoming the talk of the town. Landing gigs with nationally published magazines, fashion shows, high profile weddings, and international celebrities, Tamanna started to realize how widely her brand was spreading… not just because of her work and talent, but also because of her willingness to share all her exclusive beauty secrets with her followers. Student demand grew, and she began her career as an instructor teaching at her private studio daily and touring the world to certify her students who wish to carry the DressYourFace name in the bridal industry. Thanks to social networking sites online, she was able to reach millions in her daily audience around the globe, and has quickly become one of the most recognized makeup artists and beauty instructors in the world! With 13 years of professional experience in both hair and makeup artistry, and after dominating the bridal industry for so long, she had conquered all there was in her hometown and decided to pack up her business and permanently relocate to Los Angeles to achieve her biggest goal: To make her Hollywood debut in 2014. Within just weeks of settling in, she was already creating buzz amongst Hollywood celebrities and agencies, and quickly started gaining exposure on the red carpet for events and award shows. Her lifelong dream was finally coming true. But her true passion remained... To continue to create for her audience and her students. She used her global reach to brand her business as one of the most respected names in the industry, and started to collaborate on custom products with leading cosmetics and beauty labels to create products under her umbrella to fit the needs and demands of her clients and students. Little did she know how strongly her audience would react to these launches! Starting with the Anastasia Beverly Hills "Tamanna Palette" sold in all major department and cosmetic stores in record-breaking numbers nation wide and online, her brand literally shook the world of beauty. Following the launch of her palette, she branched out with professional hair styling tools, lashes, and even henna tattoos, all designed by her personally in collaboration with brands she trusted. Then, she broke the mold yet again. By Fall of 2014, Tamanna launched the world's first and #1 most subscribed-to Live Online Makeup & Hair School on DressYourFaceLIVE.com and changed the world of beauty education forever, bringing affordable top-tier education right to your home, 24 hours a day. Members from all over the globe, including professionals and beginners and even members who simply wanted to learn more about makeup for their own use, began to flock to her page to sign up to watch her live interactive weekly classes online and gain access the library of past recorded sessions for more study time. Students quickly coined the title of being a part of Tamanna's "DYFL Army" as a prestigious group of people who have been trained online directly by her. With over 30,000+ active members and students worldwide and counting, Tamanna Roashan is now the #1 ranked makeup and hair artistry educator in the world, teaching more students as a single instructor than most beauty schools combined. Her View and Mission: “Becoming a global beauty instructor is probably the most significant and most honorable role in my life thus far. Growing up, I didn't have a role model or mentor in the beauty field to look up to and help me. I was entering a career which, at that time, not many people had the guts to enter... and if they did, "making it" was not really a realisticly attainable goal so people didn't think much of it. All I knew, was that I loved it. But even after going to school, I felt as if I was thrown in the industry with very little real-life knowledge. Schools were very "by the book", teaching basic techniques which didn't hold up in the real world. I was thirsty for more. Everything I learned, I had to learn on my own, through experience. And now, 13 years later, I am finally where I always dreamt I would be, but it doesn't have to be this hard for others. That's why I always shared my experiences and knowledge openly, with the goal of helping the young struggling artists achieve their lifelong dreams as I did. My entire career is devoted to them, to providing REAL quality education and products, to nurturing my students and spreading knowledge, inspiration, hope, and beauty... But most of all, to promoting togetherness. Why be lonely when there's plenty of room at the top? ” – Tamanna

FARAH DHUKAI Hello SAB readers! My name is Farah Dhukai and I'm a 27 year old beauty blogger from Toronto, Canada. I have been a beauty blogger for about 5 years now, but my passion with beauty started from a young age. I remember being 4 years old and going into my Mom’s vanity to wear her lipsticks, eye shadows, blushes, and let's not forget all her beautiful Indian outfits! Of course she loved it, because what Indian mom doesn't love dressing their kids up! As time passed, I became the biggest tomboy and completely forgot about my hidden talent as a beauty enthusiast. My passion sparked again while I was in high school and I was in that stage of figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. I realized that I had this fire within me to pursue cosmetology and with the encouragement of my loving and supportive family, and my now husband, I took the plunge and went to school to graduate in makeup artistry and cosmetology science. My family and friends would always ask me how I did my makeup and to teach them my tricks, which I happily did. Eventually I discovered YouTube and felt I could share all my tips and tricks with the world! I grabbed my camera and started filming myself, and I started my blog www.dhukai.com, not knowing what would become of it. I wasn't expecting over 700,000 people to follow me and find my tips helpful! I have to admit, it was a tough start, as I am a very shy person; at the time, I wasn't fully confident in myself. I was extremely introverted and kept to myself, and found that by being on YouTube, I was able to come out of my shell and find the true me. I couldn’t thank all my viewers enough for how they have changed my life and how they have changed me for the better. I wish I could thank and hug each of them individually! I feel very blessed to have the support of my loving family and husband, and to have gained a new online family, that shows me love each and every single day! My channel took off with me showing my grandmother’s turmeric mask recipe and other homemade remedies--which I still regularly share on my YouTube channel. I guess you can say, I became obsessed with natural skincare; with the help of my husband, we were able to create our natural skincare line: FARSALI (www.farsali.com). Although our company started with humble beginnings, we have quickly become a creditable natural skincare brand, that our customers love and trust. Thank you to everyone that has supported me and has encouraged me to live my dreams! Sometimes we just need a little positive encouragement to believe in ourselves; so to everyone that is reading this: don't ever let anything get in the way of your happiness; be yourself, chase your dreams, and don't forget to have fun along the way!

SHARIFA EASMIN Sharifa Easmin is a Bangladeshi-born makeup enthusiast who makes easy-to-follow tutorials on Youtube. She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and their two year old son. While her parents had hopes of her becoming a doctor, Sharifa had much different goals. At a very early age, she developed a love for the arts. She wanted to act, dance-be creative. But because of societal and family pressures she decided to put off those dreams and went on to get a bachelor’s in Psychology. It wasn’t until her early 20s that she finally decided to find her true calling and do what made her happy. Around August of 2014 she started to play around with makeup while her son would nap. It was a way to relieve stress from her hectic life as a stay-at-home mom. While most of her day was centered around her son, she took two hours of it to focus on herself. She started sharing the looks on Instagram and gathered a small following. Soon people were requesting tutorials. While she didn’t feel like she was the best at makeup, she wanted to share all the things she was learning. So, in October of 2014, she uploaded her first video and started a new chapter. What started out as a hobby, quickly turned into a passion. She uploads frequent videos that show simple steps on achieving many different looks. She especially loves doing South Asian inspired makeup tutorials. While watching her videos, you’ll

find that she uses many affordable products. She believes you can create just as beautiful looks using drugstore makeup as high-end makeup. While her makeup skills have definitely improved over the months, she is still learning and still makes mistakes. She wants people to know that you don’t have to be experts to know how to look great-you just have to practice. When she’s not filming makeup tutorials or running around after her son, she’s doing short comedy skits on her Instagram page: skitsbysharifa. After getting so much positive feedback from her makeup videos, she decided to share more of herself with her followers. Since she’s always loved to act, the skits came naturally. The 15 second comedy sketches are an outlet for her to vent on things we can all relate to. From desi soap operas, to random happenings in everyday life she finds humor in everything. Sharifa’s Youtube channel recently hit 6K subscribers and her Instagram has almost 15K followers and steadily growing. But her true happiness comes from all the comments and support she gets from her followers. She wanted to find something fun to do and along the way, unexpectedly, gained a small community of her own. She has big dreams for herself and wherever she ends up, she knows she’ll be doing something that makes her happy. And along the way she hopes to inspire and, simply, make people smile.

UMA PREVE Hello everyone! My name is Uma Preve. As a third generation Singaporean I grew up in the beautiful, clean and green city of Singapore. Since young I have always had a passion for everything related to beauty and fashion. I remember making clothes for my Barbie doll and dreaming of becoming a fashion designer. At the age of 18 I joined the Singapore Armed Forces and became a full time military woman for the next ten years. Even though I was constantly surrounded by men in the service and mostly performed not so feminine duties, I let my hair down during the weekends by dressing up and indulging in girly things. In 2005 I started studying makeup artistry at COSMOPROF Singapore in order to become a professional makeup artist. Since I was still in the military at the time I had to attend evening classes. After getting my diploma I started doing freelance makeup for bridal and other special occasions. This opened up a whole new world for me. A world which allowed me to play with colours and ideas inspired by the many things around me. It also let me meet people from all walks of life. In 2008 I married the most amazing man who encouraged me to pursue my dreams. This was the time I stumbled upon Youtube’s video tutorials. I recall watching makeup and fashion tutorials for hours after getting back from work. During this time I found that there were not that many brown skinned women making videos and sharing their knowledge. I told my husband about this and he suggested that I should start sharing my know-how since I was a MUA and had experience working with many different clients. He borrowed me his Canon Powershot camera and this is how my journey with Youtube started. In the first video I posted I was very shy and did not dare to say anything. Instead I made the video with text instructions. This video gained more than 200 views within the first 12 hours after it was posted. Something that really encouraged me to make more Youtube videos. After one month of posting makeup tutorials I started my website www.umapreve.com where I share pictures and post beauty reviews. My website is also a place where I share what is currently going on in my life. I have continuously improved the quality of my videos and will carry on doing so as this has enabled me to learn and keep up with technology. Youtube and blogging has opened up many new opportunities for me. I have, for instance, been approached by larger companies such as Sigma Beauty to review and promote their products. I enjoy doing this when time permits. To this day my channel has had over one million video views. Something I could never have imagined even in my wildest dreams. I also have the most loveliest followers and subscribers who are genuinely concerned when I go missing in action (something I occasionally do whenever our family relocates to a new country or a new family member arrives). Many of them have followed me from the start when I was still living in Singapore, onwards to Sweden where I had my first son, and finally to Hong Kong where I am currently doing my fashion design studies and also had my second son.

MEGHA AGRAWAL Growing up I was always interested in beauty, although I don’t know where it came from- none of the women in my family were that way, and as a result I never learned from anyone in my environment. I appreciated the fact that makeup could transform someone’s face, but most importantly, their sense of self. In college I happened to meet an incredibly talented makeup artist who selflessly took me under his wing and taught me everything he knew. He nurtured my inner creative, and insisted I always believe in myself. I always enjoyed learning, so I took to the internet to research and learn from the worlds best artists. I was really taken by one beauty vloggers’ channel on Youtube, and decided that I thought I knew enough to teach others. I started my beauty channel on Youtube by reading notes to the camera to teach people what I knew- and somehow, people listened. My goal always was to teach. Explain, demonstrate, do whatever I had to, to show people how easy it really was to feel good and understand that what they thought was abnormal about themselves, perhaps really was not. I genuinely really enjoyed sitting in front of the camera and doing what I innately loved. Why people were watching me was yet to be discovered, but I was absolutely thrilled that people took me to be the expert and watched me religiously. This strengthened my sense of community and I loved engaging with other girls like myself on topics that we shared a love for. My Youtube channel is a place for all women to come together and discover the world of beauty. Between makeup tutorials, product reviews on the newest and hottest products, and monthly favorites videos, my goal always has been to teach people what I know and what I’m constantly discovering. I discuss product wins, (and fails), and alternatives to what people already know about. I’ve partnered with many companies to get discounts for my viewers in an effort to make beauty products more affordable. Alongside Youtube, I also started a blog when I had zero clue what that meant. I took it to mean a forum through which I would be able to take my love for writing and combine it with other things I was interested in, such as fashion. This is how artistrybymegha.com was born, and today I use it as an alternative yet integral part of my vlogging. This is where I share stills from many videos I create, as well as “outfit of the day” posts to inspire women to want to look and feel their best. Makeup By Megha on Youtube has given me the outlet I always desireda place where I can be completely free to share my thoughts with my ever loving audience, and somewhere I genuinely feel at home. I really hope you too will visit and find something that keeps you coming back for more.
