Registration opens 13 December 2017 More than half a million people across the UK are expected to watch and count their garden birds for this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch, organised by the RSPB. Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. Now in its 39th year, it takes place on 27, 28 and 29 January 2018. Kent Pupils’ Road Safety

The Untold Story of Father Christmas

Have you ever wondered where Father Christmas came from and how he came to live in Lapland making toys for children the world over? Now we may have the answer in this tale where an old toymaker meets the elves, becomes Father Christmas and gladdens the hearts of children and parents everywhere. This new book from Alison and Mike Battle, the brains behind the LaplandUK attraction is the first in a planned series and it’s fitting that it should start with the story of how it all began. The story will be enjoyed both by children and anyone who’s reading it aloud to them. The book itself is beautifully produced and illustrated, almost more coffee table book than typical children’s storybook. This does have the effect with high quality, thick paper and sturdy hard covers that it will survive many years of little fingers running through it. It could well become a family heirloom and Christmas tradition across the years. The Untold Story of Father Christmas is available from high street and online book shops or of course from LaplandUK’s own Elf Emporium at www.laplanduk.co.uk at a recommended price of £15.

Toyota Dream Car Art Competition

Toyota knows that when it comes to creativity, children know no boundaries. That’s the evidence from its annual Dream Car Art competition, which has produced such visionary creations as a van designed to cheer people up, a car which cleans the environment and a vehicle offering relief to those in need. Entries are now open for the UK round of the 2018 Dream Car Art Competition Young people are asked to draw or paint their dream car, presented against a background that shows where they imagine it being driven. The artwork should be accompanied by a short explanation of how the car works and what makes it special. Submissions must be hand-drawn or painted, not computer generated. Paper must be A3 size or smaller. Entry forms can be downloaded and more information, including inspiration from previous winning designs and full competition terms and conditions, can be found at the Dream Car Art Contest page at www.toyota.co.uk/dreamcar. The closing date for entries is 16 January. The age categories are: under 8, 8 to 11 years and 12 to 15 years. All entrants must live in the UK. For full details and terms and conditions refer to the Dream Car webpage, www.toyota.co.uk/ dreamcar.

Two budding artists, seven year-old Zeph Mangat from Riverhead Infants School near Sevenoaks and eleven year-old Ellie Kidd from Snodland CEP School have been named winners of Brake’s road safety poster competition. The pair wowed judges with their road safety designs which have been turned into large professional banners that have gone on display outside their schools. The messages will raise awareness in their community about the dangers of speeding. As well as having their designs turned into large banners, Zeph and Ellie also won a trip to their local fire stations and a visit from Brake mascot Zak the Zebra. The project, which included free resources for teachers, aimed to inspire and engage children about the need for drivers to slow down so kids can walk and cycle to school safely. It challenged children to create a poster about the dangers of adults speeding - something that puts kids’ lives at risk every single day. Dave Nichols, community engagement manager at Brake told Primary Times, “The poster competition was a fantastic opportunity for schools, children and parents to work together to help raise awareness about the dangers of speeding in their local community. We were really impressed by the high standard of entries we received and Zeph and Ellie’s designs showed real talent and knowledge about the subject for such a young age. A massive congratulations to them both and their schools.”

Changing the World through Breakfast

Primary Times’ charity of the year for 2018 will be Mary’s Meals. Mary’s Meals provides life-sustaining and life-changing meals to more than one million of the world’s poorest children every school day. Their idea is simple. They provide a nutritious daily meal in school which attracts chronically hungry children into the classroom where they will receive an education and learn skills that can offer them a route out of poverty. In Malawi, the charity’s largest programme, Mary’s Meals provides a mug of vitaminenriched maize porridge to more than 800,000 children every day they attend school. World Porridge Day in October celebrated the huge difference a daily mug of porridge can make to the lives of desperately hungry children. More than one million children are already receiving life-changing meals every day, but with 61 million children across the world out of school and many more hungry, the work is just beginning. It costs just 6p to provide a life-changing meal to a chronically hungry child so every penny raised for Mary’s Meals really makes a difference. Find out more about Mary’s Meals, donate and get some great fundraising ideas from their website www.marysmeals.org. Three generous donors have pledged to match up to £1.9 million worth of donations between 1 November and the 31 December. That means that donations are doubled!

Christmas Shows at The Marlowe

Shaun, a regular visitor to The Marlowe but perhaps best known for his roles in EastEnders and Extras, will play Captain Hook, while Wendi will take on the Mrs Darling, Mia the Mermaid and Big Chief Squatting Cow roles. Wendi, who was Cilla in Coronation Street, currently plays the Cook in the CBBC show, Hetty Feather. Both

Shaun and Wendi have extensive theatre experience, including roles in West End musicals. Gemma, playing Tiger Lily, presents the popular CBeebies show, Swashbuckle and Ben once again plays the Dame, who this year takes the form of Mrs Smee. Peter Pan writer, director and co-producer Paul Hendy told Primary Times, “We pride ourselves in giving Marlowe audiences a true family pantomime, and this has never been more true. We have someone for everyone of all ages, and, of course, we have real talent. The cast is very strong and will give another ‘wow’ production, as well as continuing The Marlowe quality brand.” For something in the New Year, Peppa Pig will be making a trip to The Marlowe. Join Peppa as she gets ready to go on an exciting camping trip to the woods with George and her school friends including Pedro Pony, Suzy Sheep and Gerald Giraffe. Big Garden Birdwatch

Half a million people are expected to watch and count their garden birds for the 2018 RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in January. The world’s largest garden wildlife survey takes place on 27, 28 and 29 January. Spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in your garden or local green space, then send your results to the RSPB. The house sparrow remained top of the Big Garden Birdwatch rankings, with starling and blackbird rounding off the top three. There was also good news for robins, with the average number seen visiting gardens at its highest level since 1986, helping it climb two places to number seven. As well as counting birds, the RSPB is once again asking participants to log some of the other wildlife they have seen throughout the year. This year, people are being asked to look out for badger, fox, grey squirrel, red squirrel, muntjac deer, roe deer, frog and toad. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2018, watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three days. Only count the birds that land in your garden or local park, not those flying over. Tell the RSPB the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour. For a free Big Garden Birdwatch pack, which includes a bird identification chart, plus RSPB shop voucher and advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden, text BIRD to 70030 or visit www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. Registration for Big Garden Birdwatch 2018 opens 13 December 2017. Photo credits: Andy Hay, Rahul Thanki & Nigel Blake (rspb-images.com)

Friends of the Earth Teaching Resources

Environmental charity Friends of the Earth has launched a Clean Air Schools Pack, a free educational resource to help primary school students learn about air pollution. The launch of the pack, endorsed by the National Union of Teachers, coincides with new guidance from the National Education Union which urges schools to monitor air pollution and learn about pollution in lessons. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Dirty air can cause and worsen asthma, impact brain development and even lead to smaller lung development. There are currently over 2000 schools, colleges and nurseries located in places with illegal levels of dirty air. Geared towards Key Stage Two, the packs contain three lesson plans to help transform pupils into budding scientists including air monitoring tubes which allow students to test for the harmful gas nitrogen dioxide. The pupils then get the opportunity to learn campaigning skills to make their voices heard. Muna Suleiman, Friends of the Earth air pollution campaigner told Primary Times, “We know the health effects of air pollution can be

On Demand in Schools complements trips to see live performances, enabling students to study plays day-to-day in their classroom. The plays are recorded in high definition in front of a live theatre audience by the National Theatre’s award-winning NT Live team and are available exclusively to UK schools. Teachers can study key scenes with students or show the full production over a number of lessons. Comprehensive learning resources produced by teachers and leading artists support each play. Spring Grove School

Spring Grove School in Wye have achieved two ‘firsts’ after being recognised as the first independent school in the UK, as well as the first setting of any type in Kent, to be approved by the Forest School Association (FSA) as a recognised Forest School Provider. This outstanding recognition comes following a rigorous review of Spring Grove School’s Forest School provision and programmes in line with the FSA’s six core principles of Forest School. To date only nine other schools and six dedicated providers in the UK have attained this high standard. The Forest School approach allows children to foster their problem-solving and cooperation skills as well as their confidence and self-esteem. This is definitely being witnessed at Spring Grove School where this alternative type of learning has tied in perfectly with their unique and creative educational approach and ethos. Their Forest School sessions have equipped the children, with not only an appreciation for the outdoors, but also a host of teamwork, wellbeing and practical skills valuable both inside and outside of the classroom. Spring Grove School is a family independent prep school for boys and girls aged 2 to 11 years. It is located in Wye between Ashford and Canterbury. The catchment area for pupils is within a 15 to 20 mile radius.
