Brighton Fringe Seeks Budding Artists

Children from across Brighton and Hove are being invited to design the cover of the 2018 Brighton Fringe Family Guide. Next year’s Brighton Fringe will run between 4 May and 3 June and Primary Times are again the Family Friendly Media Partner. England’s largest arts festival is challenging children under 11 years of age to create a piece of original cover art inspired by the tagline for Brighton Fringe 2018 - ‘Set Yourself Free’. They should use an A4 piece of paper to design what they think ‘setting yourself free’ looks like. The final cover image will be shrunk down to A5 so they should make sure not to write or draw too small. The winner will see their work on the front of 80,000 Brighton Fringe Family Guides and receive a gift voucher worth £200 to spend on tickets at Brighton Fringe 2018. They will also receive a Gold Friends membership entitling them to 2 for 1 offers on events and many more benefits. Three runners-up will win two tickets to a Brighton Fringe children’s show of their choice. This year’s judging panel includes Child Friendly Brighton, Door22 Creative and The Pebble Trust. The closing date for entries is 20 December. Entrants should include their name, age, school, and parent or guardian’s email on the back of their picture and send the A4 artwork to ‘Set Yourself Free’ Competition, Brighton Fringe Ltd, Brighton MET, Pelham Street, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 4FA. For more information or to ask any questions email marketing@brightonfringe.org. 4

Looking for a thrilling party idea? If singing is commonplace and routine then this experience simply cannot be beaten. The renowned Pop Star Parties comprise of a two hour group singing session in a professional recording studio in Frant near Tunbridge Wells. After a brief introduction at their cool facilities, an exclusive studio party producer will get your new ‘super group’ into the live room to go about recording their chosen hit pop song. There will be fun, laughter, and lots of singing on the way. Time is given to sing practice recordings, decide who’s singing what bits and tweak those high pitch notes to perfection before recording the real deal. Pop Star Parties then mix, master and print everyone a CD to take home with them whilst you bring some buffet snacks or birthday cake to enjoy. Drinks are included. Every CD has your inventive band name printed on it, together with a photograph of the group taken in an additional portrait studio. For more information visit www.popstarparties.co.uk or call 08005 677 297.

Bedtime Story Winner

Brighton boy, Frasier Cox has been announced as the overall winner of Book People’s Bedtime Story Competition. Frasier’s winning story ‘There’s a Little Boy the Same as Me’ was selected from more than 1,300 entries into the nationwide competition which challenged young authors aged between five and 11 to create a book on the theme of friendship. Frasier will get the chance to work with publisher Little Tiger and top illustrator, Alison Brown to turn his story into a picture book which will be available in 2018. Frasier, will also receive £250 in books to enjoy at home plus £250 worth of books for his school. The judging panel was led by Head Judge Claudia Winkleman and also featured author and radio DJ Christian O’Connell. Nine-year-old Frasier, who has autism, centred his entry around a hypothetical friendship with a boy who is just like him. However, the boy in question is a refugee who shares the same interests and childhood hopes as Frasier. Frasier enjoyed a day out in London where he got a chance to meet judges Claudia Winkleman and Christian O’Connell and was presented with an exclusive drawing of ‘There’s a Little Boy the Same as Me’ by Alison Brown, before being announced as the overall winner of the Bedtime Story Competition by Head Judge Claudia Winkleman at an exclusive lunch. Head Judge, Claudia Winkleman told Primary Times, “I was blown away by the standard of the stories and writing from all the entries into Book People’s Bedtime Story Competition. Frasier’s story, is incredibly touching and thought provoking and it’s absolutely remarkable a 9-year-old boy has written such a thoughtful story. Frasier is a very worthy overall winner and I can’t wait to see the final version with Alison Brown’s brilliant illustrations once it’s been made into a real book next year.”

The Highway Rat

Published in 2011, The Highway Rat is a firm favourite among the books of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. It’s now been brought to the screen by Magic Light Pictures, the Oscar-nominated entertainment company. The animated half hour adaptation airs on BBC One as a festive family highlight this Christmas and will be released on DVD and digital download in February. The Highway Rat is about a ravenous rat who craves buns, biscuits and all sweet things.Tearing along the highway, he searches for sugary treats to steal, until his sweet tooth leads him to a sticky end. “Give me your pastries and puddings! Give me your chocolate and cake! For I am the Rat of the Highway, and whatever I want I take.” It’s a swashbuckling tale of bandits and biscuits the whole family will enjoy. It features a host of British acting talent including David Tennant as the Highway Rat, Rob Brydon as the narrator, Nina Sosanya as the Duck,Tom Hollander as the Squirrel and Frances de la Tour as the Rabbit.

Can I Teach My Own Child to Swim? Parents often ask how they can teach their child to swim, even if they are not good or confident swimmers themselves. Some parents question whether an external teacher or classes are really necessary. Parents teach their children many things every day and you may wonder why swimming should be any different. But teaching swimming can be more complex than most people think. If you know the science of swimming, the principles of teaching and have a good grasp of child psychology, plus, if you think your child will follow your instructions repeatedly without you or your child running out of patience, you may both find the learn to swim experience rewarding and successful. But it’s worth bearing in mind that there is a risk of getting it wrong and putting your child off swimming for a very long time or for a life time. Even with the best of intentions, parents may sometimes get things wrong. Experienced swim teachers know how difficult it is to build trust with a child in the water and this process cannot be rushed. If a parent knows how to swim but doesn’t have any experience teaching it, the risk of pushing a child too fast at the beginning is very high. An out-of-pace start could make children feel unhappy and unsure about being in water and swimming in general. That’s why most people enroll their kids in swimming lessons because professional swim instructors have the right experience and training to know what to do and when to do different activities. To enquire about the lessons at WetWetWet Swim School, email info@wetwetwetswimschool.co.uk or call 01273 388 247.

Join the Dots for Father Christmas The best way to join these dots is to look at the picture from a distance.Your brain will make the connections and Father Christmas will emerge. We spend a lot of time joining dots in our minds, making connections between events that happen together. If we hear barking and a scratching noise, we guess there’s a dog on the wrong side of a door somewhere. If we walk through a puddle and shortly afterwards our right foot feels wet, we assume our shoe is leaking. Life would be impossible without cause and effect. Everything we do has an effect somewhere and everything that happens was caused by something. For years astronomers were puzzled by the strange behaviours of several shiny dots in the sky. I mean stars. As they watched them through their telescopes, they noticed that every now and then their light went dim for a while, before recovering. But surely a star couldn’t grow dim then bright over and over? Exactly thirty years ago they realised the cause of the dimness was a planet passing between the star and us. Since then we have spotted thousands of ‘exo-planets’, some of which might have life on them. I wonder if Father Christmas visits them. Happy Christmas, Earthlings! It’s amazing how much fun you can have with science. The Brighton Science Festival runs from 10 to 18 February 2018. Brighton Dome

There are some wonderful things to see at Brighton Dome this Christmas. Enter a world of flying umbrellas, giant kites and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen. In Air Play, two siblings set out on an unforgettable adventure in which the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary and air, wind and space become agents of astonishment. Through it all, laugh-out-loud comedy is never far away. Air Play runs from 21-24 and 26 December. Following a barnstorming performance from their London choirs at Brighton Dome last Christmas, The Choir with No Name, an organisation running choirs for people who’ve experienced homelessness, will be returning to Brighton Dome with their unique and life affirming Big Christmas Singalong, on Friday 15 December. Two seasonal favourites will be coming together in a special Christmas event on 16 December. The story of The Nutcracker

will be brought to life with a special narration and newly created illustrations. This will be followed by the magical film The Snowman, screened with a live performance of Walking in The Air. Both pieces will be accompanied throughout by the SouthBank Sinfonia. Ballet Theatre UK will be bringing an enchanted retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s Snow Queen. Join Gerda on an adventure across the frozen north in search of her friend Kay. Can Gerda’s love for Kay finally break the Snow Queen’s curse of eternal winter? Find out on 29 and 30 December. Family Pantomime Comes Back to Brighton

The lavish new family pantomime, Cinderella, opens on Friday 22 December at The Hilton Brighton Metropole this Christmas and runs to Thursday 28 December. It features a stellar West End cast, amazing scenery and special effects and a huge LED video wall. The line-up, which will see David Essex appear on screen as Baron Hardup, also includes West End performers, Jon Robyns as Prince Charming, Joseph Peters as Dandini and Alasdair Buchan playing one half of the repugnant ugly sisters Donaldina and Melania. Completing the disgusting duo is none other than Cinderella co-producer and career Pantomime Dame, David Hill. The cast also boasts a host of local celebrities in Lou Nash and Alex Baker, from Juice 107.2, playing The Lord and Lady Chamberlain, Keris Lea from The Sundaes playing The Fairy Godmother and Dean as Cinderella’s happy-go-lucky best friend, Buttons.

Woodland Trust Scavenger Hunt

As winter approaches and temperatures get colder, it can seem even harder to get your kids outside and enjoying the fresh air. The new season brings fresh adventures for children to have and different aspects of nature to discover – some lessons can only be learnt in the outdoors. The Woodland Trust have come up with a creative way for your young adventure seekers to get outside and enjoy themselves. A scavenger hunt will inspire the nature hunter in every child, introducing kids to new and exciting aspects of the world around them, some of which only come out in winter. Plus, its festive-themed challenges will get children into the Christmas spirit. Look for something red like a jolly robin’s breast, something soft and fluffy like Santa’s beard, or for some festive mistletoe. Get your children outdoors this winter, they may even spot some reindeer hoof marks or a footprint left by Santa. The Woodland Trust have provided a colourful checklist with pictures that can be easily printed off from their website so it’s easier than ever to create a scavenger hunt, even for your own back garden. For more information about the Woodland Trust and to print off the activity sheet, visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk and choose Nature Detectives and Activities.
