We are so glad to be back after such a long time of not printing. When we last published a magazine, back in March, we had no idea that we wouldn’t publish another one until now. What a difficult and stressful time it’s been for everyone. I really hope that life returns to normal soon. Thank you so much to all the school staff for helping to hand out Primary Times this month. We’ve worked really hard to be able to publish this issue. Thank you to all our staff, advertisers, suppliers and schools who have supported us. Our magazines were delivered wrapped in protective bags and packed in cartons so thank you to our printers and distributors too for taking such care. September is when we publish our comprehensive Choosing your New School feature, designed to help Year 5 and Year 6 pupils decide on which secondary school to choose. Some schools are hoping to hold open days at the schools while others are going to hold virtual open days. (Some schools didn’t know at the time of us going to press.) We haven’t been able to publish our open day tables this year, but we have included a table of secondary schools so do check when and how they are organising their open days this year. Many businesses have been hit very hard with the lockdown and sadly not every business will survive. Now that times are hopefully getting a little easier do try and support your local businesses. They really need you. Stay safe and well.

The decision to become a Foster Carer can take years, and a lot of careful consideration. Foster Carers have a shared motivation and desire to make a difference but come from a diverse range of backgrounds, and often choose to begin their fostering journey at unique and differing life stages. Dave, 45, gained valuable experience through his 15-year career in education, but felt the time was right for him to help change the future of one young person at a time. “I loved my job, but I love being a Foster Carer even more. I’ve been able to use my professional experience to help guide the young people in my care.” Choosing fostering as a career provides an opportunity to work in a field where you can directly change a child’s life for the better. For many people, fostering is lifechanging not just for the child in care, but for the carer, too. There are a wide range of professions, such as teaching, that provide the skillsets that can enhance your ability to foster. Prospective carers receive extensive training to ensure they have the skills and expertise to feel confident in the role. Dave says, “The training was incredibly thorough and I’ve felt supported at every step.” Becoming a Foster Carer does not have to mean giving up employment altogether. It’s true that foster carers are expected to be available to care for children, but depending on your circumstances, you can sometimes foster and continue to work flexible part-time or even full-time hours. It may just make a difference to the type of fostering that you can do. Whether you are looking to change your career or channel your professional experience into a fostering role, Brighton & Hove City Council would love to hear from you. To learn more about becoming a Foster Carer e-mail fosteringrecruitment@brighton-hove.gov.uk to arrange a call or visit www.fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk. The team are holding regular virtual information sessions.

FREE Colour Brochure
Children and young people across Brighton & Hove and East Sussex have been offered free music lessons to encourage them to take up an instrument when schools return in September. The taster sessions are accessed online for families to try out different instruments with the potential to sign up for paid lessons in the autumn term. The sessions include a Garageband app workshop; drumming without the need for a drum kit; and an informal introduction to playing the ukulele and guitar. The education music service run by Brighton & Hove Music & Arts (BHMA) and East Sussex Music (ESM) normally teaches over 4,000 pupils each week with instrumental and vocal lessons in schools. Physical lessons had to be cancelled when schools closed in March and social distancing measures were implemented due to the coronavirus pandemic. Parents who register their children to take part benefit from free interactive BOUNCY demo sessions, virtual music workshops and 50% off musical instrument CASTLE hire. Lessons cost from £10 and commence in school, at home and online from the autumn term. Previous musical experience isn’t necessary and are HIRE suitable for children aged 7 and above. Subsidised fees and bursaries are available for families on low income. Explore England’s Castles this Autumn
For the first time, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, will be filmed in the UK at a ruined castle location. For those who prefer their castle visits without the threat of a Bushtucker Trial, we’ve rounded up some local alternatives in England to visit this autumn. Hever Castle in Kent has a history spanning more than 700 years and was the childhood home of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. Initially a moated defensive castle dating back to 1270, this romantic setting is packed full of Tudor portraits and tapestries, and features fine views out over Hever Lake. Set within the 125 acres of grounds is a 100-year-old Yew Maze. See the website for details of family attractions and special events. Choosing your New School
Choosing your Child’s Secondary School
It’s been a strange year – there’s an understatement if ever there was one. However, some things still have to happen and choosing your child’s secondary school is one of those. If your child is in Year 6, you still need to submit your application by the end of October. If they’re in Year 5, it’s also good to get your ideas together now. Choosing a secondary school may at first appear to be a daunting and complicated decision faced by parents. However it doesn’t need to be. Although it’s important and with so many schools to choose from, with so many variables and specialisations, there are ways to make the process of finding the best school for your child easier. We have lots of ideas here as well as a table of local school websites to help you. Schools are telling you about themselves in different ways. Some are still holding open days but numbers are limited to maintain safe social distancing and booking is almost always required. So make sure that you register nice and early so as not to miss out. Others are doing virtual open days but numbers may still be limited and attendance and appointments to speak online to staff may still need to be booked so don’t leave it too long.
Chailey School -‘Everyone the Best They Can Be’

They have high expectations of students in both their work and behaviour and know students as individuals. Results are how schools tend to be measured. Chailey’s record over many years for the attainment and progress of students is excellent. The standards achieved in English and Mathematics are high and form the bedrock for all other learning. The school is passionate about the whole child and the progress they make in all aspects of their school life, regardless of their academic ability. Whatever a student’s talents or abilities, Chailey’s reputation as an inclusive school ensures that all needs are met – for those who are gifted and talented and for those who need additional support. The true measure of Chailey’s success is seeing a school full of happy, confident, independent young people, fully engaged in their education. Choosing your New School
Self Managed Learning at SML College
SML College prepares young people for the tests of life, not a life of tests. They have been providing Self Managed Learning programmes for young people aged 9-17 in Sussex for 19 years. This vibrant learning community of 40 students offers a real alternative to schooling - students develop the confidence and skills needed for their futures in a stimulating and nurturing environment. Dr Ian Cunningham from SML College has a new book out this month where he sets out the principles behind Self Managed Learning. Self Managed Learning and the New Educational Paradigm proposes revolutionary change to the educational system. Balancing theory, evidence and practice, this ground-breaking book demonstrates that current structures in education are ill-equipped to support a learning-based approach. It establishes the case that learning, as a core human activity, is too important to be left to schools and other educational institutions. The book goes beyond just a critique of current practice in showing how a New Educational Paradigm can work. Self Managed Learning College (for 9–17 year olds) has no classrooms, no lessons, no imposed timetable and no imposed curriculum. This is a place where students can learn whatever they want, in any way they want and whenever they want. And it works – as evidenced by the lives of former students and from academic research.
Developing Personal Excellence
Willingdon Community School places ‘Developing Personal Excellence’ at the heart of what they do. Their goal is that all of the students leave not only having achieved their personal best academically but also as well-rounded members of society. Willingdon works closely with the local community to ensure that learners understand the world beyond the classroom. The enrichment programme is key to the students’ experience of school. The school hosts trips to Alpendorf in Austria, Barcelona in Spain, Krakow in Poland, Morfa Bay in Wales and they are currently planning trips to Uganda and New York. Staff also devote a significant amount of their time to running after school clubs, sporting fixtures, theatre trips and cultural activities. They have a well-established transition process at Willingdon Community School and work closely with local primary schools to ensure the move into secondary is seamless. The school hosts additional transition sessions, beyond the standard taster days, for those who need it. Willingdon Community School is a warm and welcoming environment. The six principles of nurture are key to the learning environment. They believe that all children deserve to experience excellent lessons, and supporting staff to deliver these is central to ensuring each learner’s progress.
to 16 are meeting the UK Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations of at least 60 minutes moderate-vigorous activity per day across the week. Parking away from the school and walking, scootering or cycling the remaining part can reduce congestion in the immediate vicinity of a school. In a bid to help families follow social distancing guidelines, East Sussex County Council has submitted a bid to the Government Emergency Active Travel Fund. This could mean a pilot of “School Streets” outside a limited number of schools, where roads would be temporarily closed to vehicles during drop off and pick up times. Those travelling by bus are encouraged to check for updates on East Sussex County Council’s website. A number of revised arrangements are in place for the start of the new school term. King’s Academy Ringmer
King’s Academy Ringmer has been rated a good school by Ofsted with outstanding leadership, management, pupils’ personal development and welfare. The academy has been transformed since it began working with King’s Group Academies three years ago. Ofsted reported that students have made ‘rapid progress’ as a result of ‘outstanding leadership and management’ from their inspection in May. The report highlighted the students’ confidence and the calm and orderly environment for learning. It also noted the academy’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare, which was rated as outstanding. All aspects of the academy’s provision were graded at
Walk, Cycle or Scooter to School
As children and young people head back to school, families are being encouraged to travel by foot, bike or scooter. With roads a lot busier now, parents and carers are being asked to play their part in cutting congestion, reducing carbon emissions and boosting children’s health. The health benefits from changing your school-run routine can be significant. Currently only around half of East Sussex children aged five 10

least good with two areas as outstanding – the highest grade given by Ofsted. Highlights from the report include the academy’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare and a statement that leaders’, governors’ and trustees’ actions have led to rapid improvements in many aspects of the academy. Pupils’ progress has improved substantially. They are confident learners and the most able are making strong progress in all year groups. Pupils are taught by knowledgeable and specialist staff and they value the opportunity to take part in a wide range of extracurricular activities including music, drama and sports.

As a new school year begins, and the effects of lockdown have left us wondering if life will ever be quite the same again, Claremont are reflecting on what they, as a school, achieved in a year before anyone had uttered the word ‘pandemic’. Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s work and remarkable address at the UN summit, pupils from Year 7 and 8 decided to launch the Claremont Eco Store and what they believe is one, if not the first of its kind in a school. Working with charity One Tree Planted, the children used their profits to ‘plant’ trees in areas of the world most in need, and by February over 225 new trees were donated to Kenya and Australia. Meanwhile, pupils up and down the school worked alongside a determined band of young ‘Eco Warriors’ to drive numerous other initiatives to educate and empower the whole school community to play their part in safeguarding the environment. Eco issues were addressed in Science, Art, Maths and even French, where a residential trip included a visit to the Nausicaá Sealife Centre in Boulogne and the chance to learn more about the problem of plastic pollution in the oceans. Older pupils researched the world of Fairtrade as part of their Geography curriculum before hosting their own all-school assembly. Global citizenship was highlighted during Fairtrade Fortnight, when the whole school took part in the 90kg Rice Challenge to show solidarity with rice farmers in Malawi. Beach cleans at Hastings and litter picks around the school grounds became a regular part of ‘Warrior work’, and ‘Switch off’ Week encouraged everyone to turn off unused electrical appliances at home as well as in school. Recycling of paper, card, plastic and batteries continued throughout the year and the school dining room became a focus of eco activity ahead of the ‘The Great British Spring Clean’. By Easter, the Newspaper Club produced a special Eco Edition of the school magazine to recognise and celebrate the ongoing work of the Eco Warriors and school community.
Claremont has been on a journey to embed principles of sustainability in all that we do. The children’s efforts were recognised in July, when the School received the much coveted, Green Flag Award. But this is just the beginning ... ‘All we have to do is wake up and change’! Greta Thunberg

Claremont School Given the Green Flag
Bede’s Prep School in Eastbourne is well known for its holistic ethos, which develops children as individuals and encourages lifelong learning. Alongside traditional learning in small classes, pupils are given a wealth of opportunity to discover, develop and achieve outside of the classroom environment through the school’s comprehensive Co-Curricular Programme. With close to 90 activity choices taking place across three dedicated afternoons a week throughout the school year, there really is something for every child to enjoy. With support from specialist staff, pupils can learn how to fly a drone, create works of art, tread the boards in performing arts, cook delicious dishes, and compete in a wide range of sports at regional and national level. Pupils also have the opportunity to enjoy activities off-site, from gaining a nationally-recognised kayaking certificate to competing in horse riding gymkhanas. The programme is varied each term and is shaped, in part, by suggestions made by the pupils. Children make independent choices and decisions about their participation, become involved in the organisation, management and leadership of activities and take part in activities for myriad reasons – recreational, competitive and educational. Bede’s Prep’s carefully crafted Co-Curricular provision also develops soft skills such as cooperation, negotiation and empathy – skills which are valuable in every aspect of life, from home to the workplace.
