World Book Day 2019: Save the Date World Book Day, this year on 7 March, is the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, dedicated to celebrating the benefits of reading for pleasure for everyone, everywhere. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. Catering for all age groups, from toddler to teen, the list has been created to appeal to the widest possible range of children and young people, tastes and abilities. The list brings together exclusive new stories by much loved authors Malorie Blackman, Patrice Lawrence, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Lauren Child. Designed to be as accessible as possible, the list is available in braille, large print and audio formats and there are two additional books in Welsh: Na Nel! by Meleri Wyn James and Cyw by Anni LlynY Lolfa. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a 3-year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. World Book Day 2019 will launch a rebranded events programme – ‘Share a Story Live’ – to bring major activities into National Literacy Trust hubs nationwide. Central to generating major regional excitement and bringing books to life for children, the tour is the ‘living embodiment’ of World Book Day. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. Are Children Key to a Healthier London? 28 Schools from across London have been celebrated by Transport for London (TfL) for their work championing active and safe travel on the journey to school. As part of TfL’s STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe) schools programme, the winners received awards for being the highest performing of around 1500 participating London primary and secondary schools in reducing car use, increasing walking and cycling and using public transport. The overall best regional schools included Gilbert Colvin Primary in Redbridge who have worked incredibly hard this year with their Stripey Strider campaign to get a zebra crossing outside their school. Herne Hill Primary also impressed by devising numerous fun and interactive travel initiatives including a Clean Air Day and inviting external speakers to speak to pupils. St Mary Magdalene School in Greenwich created a three-part Spokestars initiative that develops cycling skills from the bottom up. Stars is now in its twelfth year, and accreditation to the programme has grown from 180 schools in 2007 to 1,465 in 2018. Schools are judged on their success in changing travel behaviour with each school awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold accreditation. This year 686 schools were awarded a Gold accreditation - more than ever before. For more details on the Stars accreditation scheme, please visit www.tfl.gov.uk. Photo credit: Transport for London 4

When young Anna inherits a dilapidated once grand hotel from her Great Aunt Mathilde, she’s determined to restore it to its former glory. But this is no ordinary hotel – all of her staff and guests are animals. Anna soon rises to the challenge. Whether it’s a flamingo, a penguin or a hippo knocking at the door, Anna is ready to welcome them all – with the help of her trusty sidekicks T. Bear the doorman, Squeak the friendly mouse lift operator, and Lemmy the lemur receptionist. As she soon finds out though, running an animal hotel is no easy task. Can Anna make Hotel Flamingo a success once more? Hotel Flamingo is written by Alex Milway, who lives locally in South East London. He is a full-time children’s books author-illustrator and screenwriter. His most recent book series, Pigsticks and Harold (Walker Books), was optioned by Jam Media and presented at the 2014 Cartoon Forum. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is searching for primary schools and community groups to take part at next year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival (1-7 July).

This year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival Schools’ Competition will swap scarecrows with homes for wildlife as it looks to raise awareness of the decline in the UK’s insects, birds, mammals and amphibians. The competition takes on the theme ‘It’s a Wild World’ as local schools create a home for any wildlife that may be found in their garden or nearby park. From bug hotels and bee hives, to bird boxes and hedgehog houses, entries are welcome from pre-schools and primary schools across the South East. Visitors will vote for their favourite wildlife habitat throughout the festival with a penny drop. The design with the most amount of money raised for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening will be crowned the winner, with prizes awarded to the top three. To enter and to sign up to the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, schools should visit the website: schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/ Competitions/Hampton-Court-Competition

Mrs Bun the Baker’s Ratatouille Bake FROM KITCHEN ZERO

TO BAKING HERO!

Here is a yummy and healthy recipe for Ratatouille from Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker. It’s a twist on the classic recipe – taking out the aubergines – but it’s still just as nice.

The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.

Ingredients

1 pepper - any colour 1-2 celery sticks Half a small courgette 3-4 mushrooms 1-2 spring onions 1-2 tablespoons of oil 6-8 small cooked potatoes 1 tablespoon crème fraîche Handful of grated cheese 200g tinned chopped tomatoes Basil leaves

Method 1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 6 or 200°C (fan 180°C). Grease a

15 x 15 cm ovenproof dish or a 2 lb loaf tin.You will need a baking tray for roasting.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

2. Chop the pepper in half and take out the seeds. Now chop

the pepper into chunks. Cut the celery into 1cm chunks. Slice the courgette into circles of 1cm thickness then dice. Using your fingers tear the mushrooms into 4-6 pieces – not too small! Cut the spring onion up into small pieces. 3. Place all these ingredients on a baking tray. Splash the oil over them. Roast in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes. 4. Whilst the vegetables are roasting, chop the potatoes into slices - they need to be ½ cm thick. Place the potatoes into a bowl and mix gently with the crème fraîche and grated cheese. 5. When the vegetables come out from the oven ask an adult to place them into your ovenproof dish or loaf tin. Pour in the tomatoes and tear in the basil leaves. Mix it all together. 6. Place the mixed potato mixture over the top, trying to cover all the ratatouille below. If you have extra cheese or some breadcrumbs scatter them over the top for added crunch. 7. Place in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Leave to cool and serve with a green salad. If you don’t like tomatoes leave them out – it’s still as good.

Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net.

Blackheath Halls are introducing craft workshops into their fantastic season of family theatre this spring. Inspire children’s creativity and imagination when they attend craft workshops based on two of the performances. For Theatre Rotto’s Walrus and the Carpenter in February, using recycled arts and crafts materials, children can make their own hat and seashore creatures, including oysters - which can be fed to the Walrus in the afternoon’s performance. Take your creations home with you afterwards as a souvenir. In March’s production of Sourpuss, you’ll be able to make your own shadow puppet based on one of the characters in the show. Numbers for the workshops are limited and tickets can be purchased at the same time as making a booking for the show itself. Forests and woods are never quite what they seem in the fairy tale world. In March, Theatre of Widdershins return with Snow White, Rose Red and Bear Brown, the story of two sisters who have always lived in the forest, but as with Hansel and Gretel, presented by Norwich Theatre, children never do heed the advice and warnings of their parents and you never know what is lurking in an enchanted forest! Kids will be able to step into the role of a vet during a packed week of interactive family events. The Mouse and his Child

NOW Gallery (on Greenwich Peninsula) opens its latest exhibition. Running from 22 February to 28 April is The Mouse and His Child by artist-led creative practice Studio Morison. An immersive sculptural reading room houses a collection of children’s storybooks written by authors more commonly known for their adult fiction. The exhibition’s namesake, The Mouse and His Child, is Russell Hoban’s children’s novel that interweaves adult themes of politics and the dangers of reality within typically childlike characters and motifs. When a young person reads The Mouse and His Child, their experience of an exciting and fun tale contrasts against the adult experience of the tale’s cautionary undercurrent. 10

Congratulations Blackheath High School Students

Inspiring Teachers, Inspiring Children

Babington House School in Chislehurst was the top small independent school in England for A level results in 2018 and third in the UK with 68% A* and A grades. It is an excellent school achieving amazing results and inspiring pupils from the Sixth Form right down to the Nursery. Babington’s Early Years provision is top of the Bromley Borough league tables for the second year running. Babington continues to grow and develop. Building work has just been completed creating additional teaching space. The school is coeducational throughout. It has almost 400 pupils from age 3 to 18 and from September they will be accepting boys into the Senior School in Year 7. Being a small school has big advantages. It has high standards of behaviour, dress and conduct, benefiting from no more than 20 pupils in a class and a strong sense of community. Babington is committed to outstanding music, drama, sport and the arts and offers a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities. Headmaster, Tim Lello, told Primary Times, “Our commitment to provide an academic and well-rounded education with small class sizes, tailored to the needs of our pupils is really paying off, our pupils and parents are happy and we are achieving excellent results.” For more information about Babington House, please visit www. babingtonhouse.com.

Three students at Blackheath High School have received the Silver Duke of York Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA), the highest award available, from Buckingham Palace. To earn their award, the students completed online modules covering topics ranging from online safety to web design, cyber security, gaming, cloud computing and animation. Blackheath High School places a huge emphasis on equipping girls with the digital skills they need to succeed in the future. A recent £18 million redevelopment of the school’s facilities included creating a state-of-the-art Design and Technology learning environment which supports girls develop the skills needed to pursue careers in STEM industries. This year saw record numbers of girls in the school taking Computer Science at Year 10, bucking the trend of student numbers decreasing at GCSE level – especially for girls. Next month, students at the school will also take part in The Techathon, a ‘Dragon’s Den’-style innovation challenge focussing on artificial intelligence. Head at Blackheath High School GDST, Mrs Carol ChandlerThompson told Primary Times, “We are extremely proud of our students for achieving the top Duke of York iDEA award and are excited for more Blackheath High girls to follow in their footsteps. Technology is an integral part of life in our society. As such it is our goal to empower students to embrace technology and make it work for themselves and their communities.”

Marvel Inspire Next Generation of Engineers

The Government’s Year of Engineering campaign has teamed up with superhero comic brand Marvel to launch a set of fun educational resources. These are designed to help KS2 students aged 7-11 identify the superhero qualities needed to solve the global challenges we face. The campaign features a wealth of inspiration for keeping kids busy and entertained. The resources include an aptitude test that helps young people identify which superhero they share the most aptitudes with, and how these would suit a career in engineering. There are also real life superhero case studies featuring the aspirational stories of engineers, as well as a curriculum linked lesson. The free lesson plans will help teachers run the superhero session including a fun classroom activity with role play challenges. The free Marvel resources aim to challenge engineering stereotypes, encourage a re-evaluation of gender roles in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths careers and showcase to young people that they have what it takes to be real world superhero engineers. It will also encourage skills such as resilience, resourcefulness, collaboration and curiosity. The exciting new More Heroes Needed Marvel resources, which feature iconic favourites such as The Hulk, Black Panther, The Wasp and Iron Man, can be found in the schools hub of the Year of Engineering website at www.yearofengineering.gov.uk.

Forest School at Bishop Challoner

Bishop Challoner are now moving into their third year of offering Forest School and it continues to provide the most wonderful opportunities for the younger children to explore the great outdoors. Forest School is an innovative, educational approach to outdoor play and learning where children learn about the natural environment in a safe woodland setting. They are encouraged to handle risks and use their initiative to solve problems and cooperate with others. The Forest School promotes environmental awareness and understanding of the need for sustainability. Children are taught about respect and responsibility for the world around them and are encouraged to be aware of conservation issues. Under the careful guidance of Bishop Challoner’s specialist teachers, children learn to use tools while ensuring the safety of both themselves and others. They learn about teamwork and resilience and are given the opportunity to direct their own learning and take risks. At Bishop Challoner they firmly believe that the skills and experiences offered by Forest School are highly transferable to the classroom and equip pupils with confidence, self-awareness and a sense of independence from the youngest age.You are very welcome to go and see the Forest School for yourself. KeyStageFun

KeyStageFun’s series of educational Squeebles apps offer an interactive and engaging way for children aged 5-11 to master times tables, spelling, punctuation, telling the time and more. Whether you’re keen to build your child’s confidence, prepare them for tests, or simply motivate them in their learning, this app is perfect. With a reward system, fun mini-games, and different learning modes, players collect mischievous Squeebles characters as they are quizzed on questions relating to maths and literacy. The apps contain no in-app purchases or ads and the majority offer detailed stats, allowing parents and teachers to keep in touch with their children’s progress. The Spelling and Word Search apps also offer the option of dyslexiafriendly settings. The app has received great comments from parents, describing it as a “Fantastic app that has revolutionised spelling practice in our house – no more tantrums.” Another commented, “Absolutely brilliant. I would recommend it to all parents trying to get their 8 year olds to learn their times tables.” KeyStageFun is available through the app store on iPad/ iPhone, Android and Kindle Fire for £1.99 - £3.99. London Folk Tales for Children Do you like fabulous tales of magic and fantasy? Or do you prefer real-life adventure stories of scary journeys and narrow escapes? In this book you’ll find all of these and more. Storytellers Anne Johnson and Sef Townsend have collected some wonderful tales of ordinary Londoners, but their stories are far from ordinary. They tell of the mighty river, the streets, and the hills of London. But you’ll also find stories of babies that turn into flowers, of a grown-up who becomes a child again, and of a youngster who has to travel across the world all alone. Ever since the Romans, people have come to London from all over the world to become Londoners. They’ve brought delicious foods, funky music and hundreds of languages, but most of all great stories – London stories. Johnson has been a Londoner for fifty years. She is a professional storyteller and songwriter who is committed to bringing live storytelling and music into schools. Similarly, Townsend has been a Londoner for forty years and has been telling traditional tales from around the world almost as long as that. Together they have created a book with stories for all the family. London Folk Tales for Children is available online and from good high street stores for £9.99. 20

Mas de Saribou, France Nestled in a crease between the mountains of the southern Ardèche lies this four bedroomed modern eco-villa - the perfect hideaway for those looking to reconnect with nature. Each morning guests can awake to the sound of a freshwater spring trickling past your window, and to a glorious view of soaring mountain peaks. It’s a good way to start the day. Though totally private, Mas de Saribou is tucked away in the rambling gardens of a 400-year-old farmhouse, where owners Annick and Michel live. Details of the villa’s decor are a nod to the farm’s history - handmade wooden bedheads were once the roofbeams of the old barn, and a pair of sinks are crafted from ancient chestnut wood.Annick and Michel still harvest chestnut groves, as well as figs and an orchard of apple trees. There’s also an organic vegetable and herb garden which you can plunder for your dinners. Spend mornings chilling by the freshwater pool then tear yourselves away for adventures galore in the Ardèche. Return home to the setting sun and the stunning open fireplace. This is a paradise for kids, who can run free in the extensive gardens. The area is ripe with outdoor activities, including kayaking, canyoning and wild swimming. Day trip to the source of the Loire River, located at the top of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, then on your way down, go wild swimming in the turquoise Lac d’Issarles. Closer to home, play tennis on the courts next door or chill in the garden. Swing in the hammock, stroll among the roses, splash in the stream, and swim in the freshwater pool. In a region bursting with exceptional fresh produce, self-catering is a joy.The indoor kitchen is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need (even two huge teapots), along with basic ingredients, coffee and a huge selection of teas. There is also an outdoor kitchen which is smaller but very well equipped and ideal for prepping barbecues. An outdoor table means you can have lazy summer evenings on the terrace. There are numerous regional markets and great restaurants a 10-15 minutes’ drive away, as well as a bakery and grocery store in the village five minutes walk away.
