Judging the Blue Peter Book Awards

Children from the Priory CofE School in Wimbledon have helped to judge the prestigious Blue Peter Book Awards during January, voting on their favourite fiction and non-fiction books from the six titles shortlisted.

Polka Redevelopment

Polka Theatre has taken a significant leap towards achieving its plans for redevelopment with the award of investment from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2019, Polka is the UK’s leading theatre for children up to the age of 12. The redevelopment will be the first since the charity opened its doors back in 1979 and will ensure Polka remains at the forefront of children’s theatre for future generations, providing innovative, challenging and thoughtprovoking work for an increasingly culturally diverse young audience. The development includes a new Adventure Theatre specially designed for young children up to age 5, a new rehearsal and development studio, and a creative learning studio designed with particular reference to children with sensory needs, as well as improved access facilities. This funding award means Polka has less than £800K to raise to reach their total fundraising target. Polka is one of the few theatres in the UK dedicated exclusively to children. Based in Wimbledon since 1979, Polka creates world-class theatre to entertain and inspire young audiences. Over 90,000 children visit Polka every year to experience engaging, fun and exciting theatre, often for the first time. They strive to spark the imagination, stir the emotions and fuel a sense of discovery in all children. Learning and participation is at the heart of Polka’s work, encouraging children to explore and develop creatively. www.polkatheatre.com

101 Dalmatian Street

An exciting new series 101 Dalmatian Street, is coming to the Disney Channel. It will introduce a whole new generation of children to the wonderful, spotty world of Dalmatians, inspired by Dodie Smith’s timeless 1956 novel and Walt Disney’s classic 1961 film, 101 Dalmatians. The new series has been reimagined for the 21st Century and is set in modern day London in the borough of Camden. The series follows the adventures of eldest siblings Dylan and Dolly, their parents Doug and Delilah, and 97 younger puppies, whose names also begin with ‘D’, in an epic comedy about family life, multiplied one hundred and one. Disney are looking forward to the forthcoming launch by airing a series of BTVP shorts during half term (18 -21 February) at 7.55am. In the first of these, Muddy Pups, Dylan tries to clean up whilst Diesel has his heart set on digging, spreading dirt and mess all over Dylan’s clean floors. So reserve your ‘spot’ on the sofa and get ready to watch.

Although adult judges chose the shortlist, the winners will be decided by children from 12 schools around the country. The Priory is the only school in London taking part. Since early November, 25 Priory children in Years Five and Six (aged 9-11) have been reading more than a book a fortnight and writing a review for each. The winner will be announced on Blue Peter on 2019’s World Book Day on 7 March. Peter Haddock, Head Teacher at The Priory, told Primary Times, “The whole school is so excited to be involved with Blue Peter and we’re delighted that we were chosen from all those schools. I’m pleased that it’s not just the 25 judges who are being encouraged to read more. Our school now has a real buzz for reading and all the kids are growing keen to pick up a book.” One judge, an 11-year-old girl in Year Six, told us, “I enjoyed learning about digestion at school but I’ve learnt even more reading Professor Astro Cat’s Human Body Odyssey. It’s amazing being a Blue Peter judge and I can’t wait to get a Blue Peter badge.”

Happy Birthday CLAPA

This year the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) is celebrating its 40th Birthday, and they’d love you and your family to get involved in celebrating too! In early pregnancy, different parts of a baby’s face develop and then join together. If they don’t join properly, the baby is born with a gap or ‘cleft’. This can be in the top lip, the roof of the mouth, or both. It has no single cause, and can happen in any pregnancy. One in 700 babies is born with a cleft. That’s around 100 babies every month in the UK alone. These babies and their families can face a gruelling 20 year treatment pathway involving multiple surgeries to address the problems caused by a cleft, including speech and hearing difficulties. Sadly, stigma, prejudice and isolation are experienced by many children and young people growing up with a cleft. For 40 years, CLAPA has worked to improve the lives of children, families and adults affected by cleft lip and palate all over the UK. The charity aims to be there every step of the way with personal, local support at the moments when people need it the most. To keep doing this, CLAPA needs your help. Whether it’s holding a bake sale in your school hall or staff room in aid of CLAPA, spreading the word at work and with friends or hosting a birthday party for CLAPA and collecting donations, having fun with your fundraising this year can help ensure CLAPA is here to help the UK cleft community for many years to come. Interested in getting involved? Contact CLAPA’s friendly fundraising team at fundraising@clapa.com or call 020 7833 4883 to plan your activity. You can find out more about CLAPA’s work by visiting www.clapa.com

Mrs Bun the Baker’s Ratatouille Bake FROM KITCHEN ZERO

TO BAKING HERO!

Here is a yummy and healthy recipe for Ratatouille from Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker. It’s a twist on the classic recipe – taking out the aubergines – but it’s still just as nice.

The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.

Ingredients

1 pepper - any colour 1-2 celery sticks Half a small courgette 3-4 mushrooms 1-2 spring onions 1-2 tablespoons of oil 6-8 small cooked potatoes 1 tablespoon crème fraîche Handful of grated cheese 200g tinned chopped tomatoes Basil leaves

Method 1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 6 or 200°C (fan 180°C). Grease a

15 x 15 cm ovenproof dish or a 2 lb loaf tin.You will need a baking tray for roasting.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

2. Chop the pepper in half and take out the seeds. Now chop

the pepper into chunks. Cut the celery into 1cm chunks. Slice the courgette into circles of 1cm thickness then dice. Using your fingers tear the mushrooms into 4-6 pieces – not too small! Cut the spring onion up into small pieces. 3. Place all these ingredients on a baking tray. Splash the oil over them. Roast in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes. 4. Whilst the vegetables are roasting, chop the potatoes into slices - they need to be ½ cm thick. Place the potatoes into a bowl and mix gently with the crème fraîche and grated cheese. 5. When the vegetables come out from the oven ask an adult to place them into your ovenproof dish or loaf tin. Pour in the tomatoes and tear in the basil leaves. Mix it all together. 6. Place the mixed potato mixture over the top, trying to cover all the ratatouille below. If you have extra cheese or some breadcrumbs scatter them over the top for added crunch. 7. Place in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Leave to cool and serve with a green salad. If you don’t like tomatoes leave them out – it’s still as good.

Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net.

Southbank Centre’s Imagine Children’s Festival

The Imagine Children’s Festival turns eighteen this year, but it’s nowhere near growing up. The annual festival returns 13-24 February for a half term week of the best in children’s theatre, comedy, family parties, hands-on activities, DJs, dance, immersive experiences and full-on fun for children and their grownups. With more than 180 events jam-packed into twelve days and fifty percent of the festival completely free, Imagine is the biggest festival of its kind in London. The line-up for 2019 includes former Children’s Laureates, Jacqueline Wilson, Malorie Blackman and Chris Riddell. There will be an interactive sensory SoundPit installation, Sue Perkins conducting the Orion Orchestra’s Noisy Notes, a city-wide game of Consequences involving 600 students, and Peppa Pig’s first concert with a full-size orchestra conducted, for the first time ever, by Mummy Pig. The Kids Takeover returns for another year, giving a group of children the chance to take the reins of the festival alongside the Southbank Centre team in all areas of the festival production, from contributing to the line-up to selling programmes, making tannoy announcements and ensuring shows start on time. Free events include this year’s Book in a Day, How To Train Your Dragon, by Cressida Cowell. The whole book will be read over the course of the day, and a free book signing from Cressida Cowell herself on 23 February in the Clore Ballroom. There will also be events and activities popping up all across the Southbank Centre site every day. For more information and to book your tickets, please visit www. southbankcentre.co.uk. Based on the bestselling books by Liz Pichon, the brand new story of Tom Gates is brought to you by the award-winning team behind Horrible Histories and Gangsta Granny, and for the first time ever it’s live on stage at Richmond Theatre this spring. This amazing world premiere will then be touring the UK throughout the year. Tom’s doing everything possible to stay out of trouble but somehow he’s got three sad faces on the school achievement chart. Getting another sad face means Mr Fullerman won’t let him go on the school trip. Moany Marcus Meldrew is making things worse and now Tom’s annoyed his grumpy sister Delia. Even Amy Porter (who’s smart) won’t talk to him. Can Tom’s best friend Derek help? Will Rooster the dog stop eating his homework? Will his grandparents, the Fossils, ever make something he can actually eat? Mum, Dad and sister Delia are doing everything to make his life difficult, which means Tom will need all the help he can get to save the day! This exciting and hilarious new adventure brings Liz Pichon’s fantastic characters to life and is perfect for all the family whether you are a lover of the books or new to Tom and his friends. The Metro described the Birmingham Stage Company as “the masters of children’s theatre” and the Telegraph described the Tom Gates series as a “British publishing sensation”. Tom Gates will be at Richmond Theatre from 20 - 24 March. For more information and to book tickets, please visit www.atgtickets.com. Photo credit: Mark Douet

20 Minutes with Ruth Mary Johnson

Family Theatre

Tom Gates Live on Stage

Rachel Benson from Primary Times was lucky enough to meet with Ruth Mary Johnson, former teacher now turned director, actor and general creative genius. She is currently directing Justin Audibert’s adaptation of The Winter’s Tale at the National Theatre. The new version for younger audiences has been condensed into an hour long play which will be performed at the Dorfman Theatre before starting a tour of schools.

Ruth greeted me early one morning with a big hug and an even bigger smile, despite having a particularly stressful day ahead of her – the show is about to go into its technical rehearsals. She is incredibly passionate about theatre for all ages, coining the term ‘Family Friendly Theatre’. She is humble, hard-working and her fiery passion is contagious.

Does being a former teacher and being a director influence each other?

Yeah. As a teacher I had a Performing Arts A-Level class and we were going to the theatre all the time. Then 10 years ago when I left teaching, I started by being an actor. Teaching informed that so much because you have an audience six times a day and lesson planning for me is like telling a story. It gave me a lot of confidence. And when it came to directing, even more so. Work for young people is what I love most, I just adore it.

Tell us a bit more about the show.

So in this remount (of The Winter’s Tale), Perdita has more control over the storytelling. We start with her wedding and she stops it and rewinds to work out how she got there. So there’s a connection with the audience as they process it with you. We see her see what’s happened. It felt really important that we give her a voice and control.

Why is this programme of work by the National Theatre important?

The National Theatre really understand the increasing difficulty faced by schools through cuts and assessment demands, and they believe in the importance of young people having access to explore theatre as a way of developing skills, confidence, curiosity and creativity. It’s really special. And I think in terms of where we’re at with arts education and how it’s viewed. It’s not about being actors, it’s about problem solving, communication and teamwork and I don’t know a single job that doesn’t ask for that.

Any nuggets of wisdom for any aspiring creatives?

Ask questions, be playful, and keep trying out different ideas. Get things wrong and celebrate this as it is often one step closer to getting it right. The Winter’s Tale will run from 6 – 21 February. For more information, please visit www.nationaltheatre.org.uk. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

Paint your own Money Box at Squire’s

Whether your child’s approach to saving money follows the habits of the wise old owl or if they are as quick as a fox when it comes to spending, saving money is a good habit to encourage from a young age. Painting their own money-box is a great way to get them even more engaged with the idea. Half term week, 18-22 February sees the return of the very popular Create & Grow workshops at Squire’s Garden Centres with two of the most popular woodland creatures - the Owl and the Fox taking centre stage as the types of money box to paint and start saving. There’s no need to book in advance, just turn up on the day and, subject to availability, you can get painting straight away, anytime between 10am and 4pm. The cost is £4.75 per child. For more information, visit www. squiresgardencentres.co.uk.

Kew Orchids Festival: ¡Hola Colombia! Colombia’s landscape is as diverse as the flora and fauna that inhabit it, from tropical beaches to snow-capped mountains and everything in between. Home to more orchid species than anywhere else in the world, Colombia’s unparalleled biodiversity and vibrant culture is the inspiration for Kew’s 24th annual Orchids Festival from 9 February to 10 March.

Stepping into the Princess of Wales Conservatory, visitors will find themselves transported to an entrancing paradise evoking the sights, smells and sounds of Colombia. Colombia is famed for its wildlife diversity and boasts the greatest number of bird species of any country in the world. To celebrate this, the central display of the festival will be a ‘carnival of animals’ depicting a toucan in flight, a hanging sloth and swimming turtle, all composed of stunning orchids, bromeliads and other tropical plants. La Batalla de Flores (Battle of the Flowers), part of the Barranquilla Carnival will serve as the theme for the February Half Term activities on offer for families. Carnival workshops during half term will feature flower costume making, drumming and dancing, with an hourly carnival parade leading to the Princess of Wales Conservatory. Half term activities will run from 10.30am– 4pm daily.

Marvel Inspire Next Generation of Engineers

Education News

The Study Prep, Wimbledon

The Study Prep, Wimbledon, is a leading prep school for girls

aged 4-11 based on two sites on the borders of leafy Wimbledon Common. Non-selective at Reception, it is renowned for its caring, creative ethos and superb academic results at 11+. Last year saw a record number of senior school offers and scholarships with 39 scholarships awarded, beating the previous year’s record of 35. Sport, music and the performing arts are all impressive as well as the creative curriculum followed in the early years. Go and see for yourself what makes The Study Prep such a special, nurturing and inspirational learning

The Government’s Year of Engineering campaign has teamed up with superhero comic brand Marvel to launch a set of fun educational resources. These are designed to help KS2 students aged 7-11 identify the superhero qualities needed to solve the global challenges we face. The campaign features a wealth of inspiration for keeping kids busy and entertained. The resources include an aptitude test that helps young people identify which superhero they share the most aptitudes with, and how these would suit a career in engineering. There are also real life superhero case studies featuring the aspirational stories of engineers, as well as a curriculum linked lesson. The free lesson plans will help teachers run the superhero session including a fun classroom activity with role play challenges. The free Marvel resources aim to challenge engineering stereotypes, encourage a re-evaluation of gender roles in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths careers and showcase to young people that they have what it takes to be real world superhero engineers. It will also encourage skills such as resilience, resourcefulness, collaboration and curiosity. The exciting new More Heroes Needed Marvel resources, which feature iconic favourites such as The Hulk, Black Panther, The Wasp and Iron Man, can be found in the schools hub of the Year of Engineering website at www.yearofengineering.gov.uk.

Ever Thought of an Independent School?

If you would like to consider an independent school but are not in a position to pay the full fees or are worried about the cost, then do take a look at the bursaries that schools such as Wimbledon High School GDST offer. There is sometimes confusion over scholarships and bursaries. A bursary is an award of financial help to families. It is means-tested, so you provide proof of income and financial resources and (in Wimbledon High’s case) the Girls’ Day School Trust assesses whether each student meets the criteria for assistance with the fees. A 100% bursary would mean getting all school fees paid plus often other expenses such as uniform, school lunches and help with travel costs. Some bursaries awarded are more like 30%, so the family has to pay the remainder of the fees. In each case, the student still has to pass the entrance exam at 11+. Scholarships, by contrast, are not means-tested but are awarded to top performers in the entrance exam (for an academic scholarship) and in Music and Sport. So if you are starting to think about options for secondary education for your child, don’t discount the independent route. Excellent teaching married with a high level of pastoral care and lots of co-curricular opportunities in Music, Drama and Sport make a great combination. Get in touch with schools to ask what they offer. “My time at Wimbledon High was life-changing” says one former bursary student. It could be for your daughter, too. For more information on how Wimbledon High can help you with fees, visit www.wimbledonhigh.gdst.net/admissions/help-with-fees

RIBA Architecture Programme for Schools

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has launched the National Schools Programme – the UK’s first nationwide architectural learning programme for schoolchildren. The programme partners schools with expertly-trained architects (RIBA Architecture Ambassadors), who volunteer their time to deliver bespoke and creative, curriculum-linked workshops for children aged 4-18. The programme is free of charge to schools, thanks to the generosity of its supporters. The RIBA’s National Schools Programme will help thousands of children to explore and understand the built environment – its impact on people and communities, how it is shaped and developed and why good design is important. The aim of the programme is to inspire a generation and fill them with the confidence, knowledge and skills to make their voices heard. The launch of a comprehensive nationwide programme follows a successful pilot phase that engaged a diverse range of 18,000 young people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, in over 200 schools across England. The pilot was delivered by 349 Architecture Ambassadors from 170 architecture practices. The RIBA’s National Schools Programme offers a bespoke variety of workshops, matched to the individual needs, resources and interests of the school. Projects can involve exploring the local area and understanding key issues affecting the local community. Projects in the pilot phase have also included huge large-scale models made of bamboo and proposals for creating ‘a city of the future’. For more information, please visit www.architecture.com.

Parents, get reddy! Friday 15 March is Red Nose Day! Comic Relief’s Ella Large offers ten top tips to help your children bake, dance, splat and sing their way to a fantastic fundraising day. Red Nose Day is all about people of all ages coming together to make the world a better place. Last Red Nose Day, schools and nurseries helped raise over £5 million to help vulnerable people in the UK and the world’s poorest communities. And this year Comic Relief wants to do even better! At Comic Relief, they recognise all the hard work that lies behind children’s fundraising. Whether it’s baking, making donations, creating costumes or face painting at 7 o’clock in the morning, it’s hard to overestimate parents’ efforts. So why do it? What difference does it make? First of all, all the money your child’s school raises this Red Nose Day will be used by Comic Relief to change countless lives, both here in the UK and worldwide. The charity funds amazing organisations that provide brilliant solutions for people living in desperate situations. Secondly, taking part in Red Nose Day can have a profound impact on children. It’s an exciting, memorable day when everyone lets their hair down and comes together to make a difference. As well as being great fun, for many children it’s the first time they understand they have the power to change things in the world. So as a parent, what can you do to make sure your child has a Red Nose Day to remember? 1. Get the date on the calendar. Red Nose Day is Friday 15 March… Don’t be caught by surprise! 2. Get costumes ready. Schools across the UK will be asking pupils to pay £1 to wear something red or go non-uniform. Avoid the lastminute panic and get those red costumes reddy! 3. Buy a tee-hee-hee-shirt. For a simple dressing-up solution, why not by a Red Nose Day t-shirt? Children’s designs feature Disney characters and are available from TK Maxx stores (www. tkmaxx.com ) or www. comicrelief.com/shop 4. Go wild with accessories. Face paint, red hair dye, red socks, scarves, ribbons, jewellery… Dig out what you’ve got and decorate your child! For instant solutions,

you’ll find everything from wristbands and badges to deeley boppers and spinning wands at www.comicrelief.com/shop and in Sainsbury’s stores 5. Pick your child’s Nose. This year there are eleven new Red Noses, each of which comes in its own box your child can use as the building blocks of a castle. 6. Get baking. Red Nose Day bake sale? Never fear! There are a range of savoury and sweet recipes at www.comicrelief.com/free-downloads – all easy to make and with a Red Nose twist. Or just buy a cake and take the credit (nobody will know…). 7. Support with sponsorship. If your child comes home with a sponsorship form, help them to contact family and friends to ask for support. 8. Visit the Red Nose Day website. Spend time looking at www.comicrelief.com/primarytimes with your child. You’ll find everything from stories about the people their fundraising will help to colouring sheets and dressing-up masks. 9. Watch Blue Peter together. In the run-up to Red Nose Day, Blue Peter will be asking kids to share their favourite rib-ticklers and side-splitters for their ‘Make your teacher laugh for Comic Relief’ campaign. 10. Help out on the big day. Find out what your child’s school is planning for Red Nose Day and offer your support. Could you run a disco? Sell cakes? Or just shake a bucket at the school gate? At the end of the day, sit down with your child and watch a massive night of comedy and entertainment live on the BBC, knowing that together you’ve played your part in changing people’s lives for the better. Schools and organisers can order their free primary school fundraising packs stuffed with everything you need to get inspired and involved at www.comicrelief.com/ primarytimespack
