Be Confident! Make 2017 your year to shine

CONFIDENT PEOPLE are easy to recognise. They are self-assured and have a way of holding their heads high, whilst radiating a sense of ease that is noticeable to everyone who crosses their path. They leave many of us wishing that a little of that confidence would rub off on us,

and that we could glide through our lives in a similar state of poised buoyancy. The good news is that according to Confidence and Life Coach Lisa Phillips, confidence is like a muscle which grows with use, and it is also a skill that can be learned.

What is confidence? In her book, The Confidence Coach, Lisa explains that confidence means something different for everyone. For example, being confident for one person might mean being capable of effectively speaking in public, while for someone else it might mean being able to enter a crowded room without feeling nervous and self-conscious. For many people, simply being able to get through the day with a feeling of purpose and empowerment would be a dream come true.

Why is confidence important?

She defines confidence as a form of selfacceptance. “Confidence means standing strong in who you are. It’s about releasing the need to seek happiness and approval through others and having a knowing that you are not broken, in fact you are OK just as you are – warts and all!”. She adds that confidence also means taking the time and effort to care for ourselves, rather than prioritising the feelings of others. Being confident could be interpreted as a way of life, in which you are the central character, rather than simply existing for the purpose of meeting the needs of others. “Confidence is about honouring your own judgements, preferences and needs. We stuff down all the things we want in life. We become people pleasers, just doing what other people want us to do, and chameleons in that we change who we are just to keep other people happy”, Lisa explains. She adds that we can be our own worst enemies in this regard. “Focus on yourself. Focus on approving of yourself. We don’t do it enough, but it really feels good”.

! W O

N

How can we become more confident? Tips to build confidence: 1. Acknowledge the fact that everyone suffers from a lack of confidence at some time in their life. 2. See increasing your confidence as a step-bystep challenge. 3. Let go of old beliefs and stories. Focus on how good you are going to feel with increased confidence. Write a confidence goal if you wish. Imagine how your life will be different when you have inner confidence and you feel good about yourself! 4. Let go of worrying what other people think about you. 5. Write a list of things you need to do in order to increase your confidence.

6. Give up the need to criticise yourself. Every critical thought knocks your confidence. Every positive thought about yourself increases your confidence. Why not start by writing down five nice things about yourself every day, or even praise yourself every time you look in the mirror? 7. Give up the need to be perfect. You are human, so perfection is never going to happen. 8. Face a small fear. Start small and build yourself up. 9. Accept that it is OK for you to shine and feel good about yourself. When you shine, you also give other people the incentive to shine! Regardless of your age, your circumstances, or your past experiences, it appears that it is never too late to begin to practice a confident outlook. Lisa explains that accepting responsibility for your own thoughts and feelings, rather than giving others the permission to dictate these to you is key. “Don’t give away your power to situations or people who may have crushed your confidence in the past. Take responsibility for your own life. You are so worth it”.

Most of us agree that being more confident would have a direct impact on our well-being. We realise that it is our lack of confidence that is usually the main factor which holds us back from making a career change, taking up a new hobby, or ending a dysfunctional relationship. In over a decade in the industry, Lisa asserts that the most common problem she assists clients with is the lack of confidence, and agrees that a lack of confidence essentially prevents people from living the life they want to live. Despite its commonality, it is certainly a problem that is worth addressing, because the rewards of even a slight increase in personal confidence can bring about major life improvements. These benefits can include experiencing less anxiety, and having more resilience and compassion for yourself.

BEAUTY with Kylie Eustace To create this look I used Kylie’s Professional mineral Goddess foundations and products. Hair products sponsored by Urban tribe AU

Sporty Beauty

Eyes & Brows Bronzer also looks great swept along your eye socket in replace of eyeshadow. Only use a minimal amount of rosy blush for a healthy fresh look. Brows are best to be gently filled and avoid any harsh edges. Use a shadow to match your hair colour and if you have missing areas or gaps in your brows simply correct the shape. Water resistant mascara is ideal to prevent any smudging as you may perspire significantly if you’re really going hard!

Breakdown

THIS MONTH’S COVER MODEL is carefree and sporty! Here are a few sporty make-up tips to keep you looking on top of your game. To look great in the heat of the summer months it is important to keep hydrated inside and out. Drinking plenty of fresh water and consuming fruit will keep your summer skin looking beautiful.

Face If you are out and about exercising or enjoying the summer sun it is important after cleansing to start with a facial sunscreen for protection. When it comes to Foundation you will need to use a product that allows your skin to breathe and will not clog pore’s. My favourite outdoor foundations are loose Mineral Powders as they contain natural sunscreen and are healing on the skin. Another added bonus

is that the quality formulas will not melt off your face while you are working out. If you are being active keep your makeup simple by covering imperfections and allow your skin to shine though by applying a sheer application of product to the remainder of your face. You may also use a bronzer to give a little definition in your facial contour areas, just under your cheekbones and blending up towards your temples will give a lovely summer glow.

Hair 3

Wearing hair in braids is on trend and great for active girls, the sections of hair pulled into a braid is evenly distributed so they don’t tend to drag and be as heavy as a ponytail.

FASHION with Carly Vidal-Wallace

A New Year A New You WITH A NEW YEAR COMES the possibility to start in a positive mind set, and to kick the dust off those sports shoes and get active. Sometimes a great new outfit that you feel really good in, is the only inspiration you need. If you have invested in a great new outfit, you are more likely to want to wear it, feel good in it and go on a run or get to the gym. Every January I love taking a look at the trends to help you pick that outfit that is going to get your mindset ready to get in shape. These days it’s hard to come by something “new” in the activewear market, but thanks to SupaCore – a Melbourne company they are pushing the limits when it comes to compression activewear. Never seen before in sportswear (1) – they have a pretty amazing seamless design. Yes, that’s

3

right – no horrible uncomfortable stitching! They fit like a glove, are super comfortable (and yes they hold you in tight in all the right places). 7 years in the making – well worth checking out. If fashion is more your thing and you just need to have all eyes on you for the best looking activewear (2) in the entire gym than you can’t go past PE Nation. I literally could buy and love anything on the entire website from swimwear, boxing shorts, track pants to crop tops. Choosing only one picture to display will be hard. Great block colours, use of lines to thin down your shape and so fashion forward. Want a QLD locally made option? Allira Designs are by Townsville born, Allira who fuses great tropical QLD colours into some unique prints – you’ll feel quite unique in Allira’s designs as they are limited!

1

2

Lastly, if you want to raise the game on glamour sportwear take a look at Track and Bliss straight out of Florida (3) – these feminine designs which accentuate your figure in navy and black are as luxury as you can get in activewear. Remember it’s just about moving your body and giving it a go. Try and set small goals and stick to it. There are so many great apps these days to help you build a routine. Look after your body, when you feel great on the inside it shows on the outside.

HEALTH & FITNESS with Cameron Corish

Ready for a health change? Tried before and not succeeded? Here’s a simple strategy that works.

T

he main reason for most of us not being successful in implementing a new health change is that we carry forward the same old thinking and strategy. As a result, we get the same old results (or lack of them). So to be successful this year we need to change our thinking and strategy! is doing the “ Insanity same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

So how does it work?

What is the secret to long-lasting change? Is it high motivation, planning or will power? According to Dr B J Fogg of Stanford University, an expert and researcher into human behaviour change, it is none of these. The secret is in TINY HABITS. Most of us tend to set outcome goals like losing 10 kilos and rely on determination, willpower and motivation to push to our health goal. But Dr B J, who devised the Fogg Behaviour Model, says, “Relying on motivation as a long-term change is a losing strategy.” Using motivation is only successful in short bursts; hence, why people yo-yo diet or start and stop exercising. So to understand his “Fogg Behaviour Model” of B=mat (Behaviour = motivation, ability and trigger), here are some of the simple concepts:-

6

• Behaviours lead to outcomes. • 3 elements are required at the same time for a behaviour to occur: motivation, ability and triggers. • High levels of motivation are required to do hard-to-do things. • Low levels of motivation are required to do easy-to-do things. • Starting new behaviours works best after existing habits or “triggers”.

1. Determine the change. 2. Break it down to tiny behaviours e.g. for weight loss it might be to drink an extra glass of water per day or one push up per day. 3. Add this behaviour after an existing preestablished habit like cleaning your teeth. 4. Reward yourself by celebrating immediately by saying “I’m awesome”, “Bingo” or a small happy dance. 5. Repeat and add one extra each day. 6. Give it time for behaviours to become life-long habits rather than short motivational changes. This new strategy may seem too simple to work, but it so effective because it does not rely on high motivational levels and strong willpower. It relies simply on tiny and easy changes that do not overwhelm and focuses on repeated and improving behaviours for long-lasting habits. Brisbane welcomes the world for Global Rugby Tens

I

n just over two months, over the weekend of February 11 and 12, Queensland is set to host the inaugural Brisbane Global Rugby Tens tournament at Suncorp Stadium - a blockbuster weekend of world class rugby featuring 14 of the best teams from around the globe. Ten Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby clubs and four elite invitational teams including famed French team Toulon, the Bulls, Samoa and the Panasonic Wild Knights will compete in 28 matches over the two days – all up, 16 hours of compelling live rugby that will also signal the beginning of the Super Rugby season. To be held annually, the event is sanctioned by the Australian Rugby Union and New Zealand Rugby and will be broadcast live across Australia, New Zealand, UK, Japan, Africa, France and other major international markets. www.southcitybulletin.com.au | January 2017

Featuring a similar structure to the 15-a-side game, but with more space on field for players to showcase their skills, Tens rugby is the perfect format for what will be a hugely entertaining launch of the Super Rugby season in Brisbane for at least the next four years.

Win Brisbane Global Rugby Tens will be held on February 11 and 12 at Suncorp Stadium, and lucky for you we have 2 Gold Family Passes (4 tickets within a family pass) to give away! For your chance to win, enter at www.southcitybulletin.com.au

Fitness tech to kick start your New Year

W

hat better time than the start of a new year, to commit to a healthier and more active lifestyle? If your new year’s resolution is to get back in shape, lose a few kilos or to just be more active, there are plenty of tech tools to help you reach your goals. Fitness and lifestyle technology is a booming market in the tech industry, with many different companies offering a variety of products to help you exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Fitness tracking devices like the Fitbit are some of the most popular products in this market, as they are simple wearable devices that are jam-packed with features to help maintain an active, healthy lifestyle.

Any fitness professional will tell you that exercise is only half the battle, and that a balanced diet is just as important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Counting kilojoules and ensuring you are getting your daily-recommended nutrient intake can be overwhelming and time consuming – thankfully technology can help us out with that too. There are a number of great apps available for your computer and smartphone to help take the stress out of dieting by doing all the calculations for you. One of my favourite apps for this is MyFitnessPal, which features a huge database of nutritional information for almost every food you can think of. Long-time readers may remember MyFitnessPal, as we took a look at it earlier in the year.

Head to southcitybulletin.com.au to check out my other recommendations, including: the Fitbit Flex 2 with heaps of new features like a step counter and sleep monitoring and the Garmin Vivofit 3 with an incredibly attractive design.

HOLIDAY ESCAPES with Vicki Smith

Travel bucket list 2017

W

elcome to 2017, a new year of adventures and places you could put on your Bucket List. There are so many wonderful and exciting destinations in Australia which makes it almost impossible to narrow it down to just a few. However, here are four locations that may help with your decisionmaking.

Fraser Island Fraser Island, off the East coast of Queensland is a must, where 120km of sandy beaches, coloured sand-hills and stunning sunrises and sunsets are just a few of the abundant opportunities to choose from. Perhaps you’d prefer a dip in the pure organic fresh waters of Lake McKenzie, after which you’ll feel delightfully rejuvenated. Maybe you’d like to visit the wreck of the SS Maheno, where you can imagine a bygone era when this ocean liner was

once used as a hospital in WW1. There’s so much to do on this island that you can easily fill up a weekend or even a week.

Norfolk Island A place that’s often forgotten, but should be on everyone’s Bucket List for 2017 is that tiny volcanic speck in the Pacific, 1412km off the east coast of Australia: Norfolk Island. For the adventurous, the surrounding ocean is crystal clear lending itself to a scenic cruise or a little snorkelling amongst a wide array of sea life. For the history buffs this island is a must: the small population being a living part of a story that can make your hair stand on end! The avid golfer will enjoy playing on a course high on the hills overlooking the ocean and majestic cliff faces. These are just a small taste of the many activities available to keep you active. For the photographer, this place is a paradise where every corner is an outstanding view

of Norfolk pines, the endless sea and, wait for it, cows with right of way!

Tenterfield & Stanthorpe If you dream of some “country time”, why not check out Tenterfield and Stanthorpe between April and June. These towns, some 220kms west of Brisbane, come alive with the beautiful earth-tones and vibrancy of autumn along with cool frosty mornings. You can climb Bald Rock, the largest granite monolith in Australia, indulge in winetasting at some of Australia’s premier wineries or choose to visit Donnelly’s Castle, a rock formation the kids will enjoy as it was once Thunderbolt’s hideout! That’s my Four. But select your own Bucket List and make the time! See ya! Vicki Smith, Champagne Travellers www.champagnetravellers.com

Unusual Occupations: Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapist Lorna Jackson takes us through her interesting career choice‌.

What does a hypnotherapist do? A hypnotherapist uses hypnosis to help people change their thoughts, feelings, habits and behaviours to overcome problems or symptoms which can include fears, phobias, depression and trauma.

Do you have a varied clientele? I see children and adults, both male and female, with great results. Children respond really well to hypnosis and over the years I have helped children to stop biting their nails, wetting the bed, and gain confidence for sporting activities. I have helped adults to lose weight and overcome habits such as binge drinking, smoking and nail biting. fear was really claustrophobia. She said she felt trapped and couldn’t breathe when she was in a plane and when she was in the back seat of a car, and she had no conscious memory to explain it. While in a deep hypnotic state she remembered almost drowning while playing at the beach when she was age three. During this session of hypnotherapy, we brought the unconscious memories to the conscious and because of this powerful process fears generally dissolve very quickly, as hers did in only one session. This client got back to me a few weeks later telling me how wonderful her flight interstate was and how she is looking forward to her overseas flights.

What happens during a typical session? The client can focus on the things they wish to change and on the ways, they can best do so, free from critical or anxious thoughts. The client is not asleep nor are they unconscious when in hypnosis. Because the client is relaxed or otherwise mentally occupied, the suggestions given by the hypnotherapist will be acted upon more easily by the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy is safe and natural and feels just like daydreaming. In this state your mind can adopt new ways of thinking and feeling at a deep level.

Can you give an example of a successful outcome? A client came to see me recently because she had a fear of flying. She needed to fly interstate with her job and felt embarrassed because of the fear. As we discussed her problem we uncovered the

What do you enjoy about your job? I enjoy helping people to achieve their goals and make life changes. It is a career path that I find to be incredibly rewarding. Make your New Year’s resolutions stick!

A

s another year comes to an end, we start to get excited about a fresh new start, new goals and new opportunities – and why shouldn’t we – because, this year we’re all going to smash our goals‌. right? The problem with New Year’s Resolutions is that most of us get really excited about them for about week, until they die off and we go back to our old ways. So how do we make sure we are going to stick to them? Here are a few of our tips to help you stick to your New Year’s resolutions in 2017.

Limit Your Goals It’s all well and good to set yourself a million goals, but to try and change your whole life in the month of January is near impossible. Get a pen and paper and write down your short term and long term goals, making sure you limit them to just 10 – so 5 each will do. Short term will be things you want to achieve that month or within the coming months and long term will be within years. This way, you don’t get overwhelmed by thinking you have to do everything all at once, which many of us do. Take it step by step, goal by goal and you’ll get there.

decide to cut out absolutely everything you used to eat and hit the gym every single day, chances are you’re probably only going to last that week because your body and mind aren’t used to it. You really need to prepare yourself and start with small lifestyle changes to prevent from falling off the bandwagon so quickly. If your goal is fitness orientated start with a simple walk each day, if it’s to be more organised buy yourself a diary or planner and plan your week ahead or maybe you’re looking to get out of debt this year, why not seek a professional’s advice – just take the first step and the rest will follow! As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day, so just start by changing one thing at a time and you will reach your goals!

Going through these steps will help you figure out what your goal really is, why you’re doing it, why it’s important and how you are going to achieve it.

Share and document Sharing your goals with your friends and family or even on social media, can help you really set them in stone. Your friends and family will do their bit in helping motivate you (it may feel like hassling at times) if they see you doing the opposite or straying away from your goals – for example quitting smoking or doing more exercise. This will help you stay focused and accountable. As you embark on your New Year’s resolutions it’s also important to document your progress and wins, as well as your downfalls, that way you know where you need to improve. Make yourself a goals book and document everything! It will help you stay motivated!

Don’t beat yourself up Lastly, it’s important that no matter what your goals are you don’t beat yourself up for any slip ups or mistakes! We are all human and we all have slip ups from time to time, when you do just make sure you get straight back on the band wagon! And, make sure you reward yourself when you do hit those goals, because you deserve it! So, go out and smash those goals! Happy New Year everyone!

Sit down and run your New Year’s resolutions and goals through SMART: Specific – What is your goal? Why do you want it? What will it do for you when you have achieved it? Measurable – How will you measure your success? For example: healthy eating can be measured via a weekly diary or logging food into a fitness app. Achievable – Is your goal achievable in the time frame you’ve set? Is it achievable at all? For example: if you wanted to lose 100kg in 2 months that would be an un-achievable goal in that time frame and an unhealthy one.

Realistic – Is your goal realistic? Will it work with your lifestyle? Will it affect others? How will you make it work? What steps will you take?

3/54 Compton Road, Underwood Qld 4119

Timely – What time-frame would you like to achieve this goal in? What happens after that?

Get ready to MELT Although it would sum up Brisbane’s weather perfectly right now, we’re not talking about the heat when we say ‘MELT’. On from Wednesday 25th of January to Sunday 5th of February at Brisbane Powerhouse, MELT festival is an invitation to celebrate Brisbane’s wonderfully diverse queer communities. It’s a special time to reflect on the struggles these communities face and the achievements they’ve won together. And it’s a time to party! Brisbane’s LGBTI+ voice is loud and clear, bursting with pride, humour, humanity, and rebellion. The community is bounding towards equality in many vital aspects of life and MELT is a vehicle for these leaps. Help spread the love and check out some of these incredible shows and exhibitions on offer at Brisbane Powerhouse during MELT Festival.

Cake Face Cake Face is a video artwork, fresh from Brisbane’s own Claudia Riddiford. Switching make-up with cake ingredients, Riddiford presents a new type of make-up - a delicious one - for both male and female contexts. The visual metaphor for beauty products plays with gender association and identity in an absurd, abstracted form.
