Why we love it

ustralians love overseas travel, and there’s nowhere we won’t go. You’ll find us in popular destinations such as Disneyland and New York, and the most far flung, including Antarctica or Africa. When it comes to seeing the world, we love it all: the adventurous, the exotic and the mainstream. Australians will stay for a week, or a month, sometimes we’ll relocate for a year. Last year, we made over 8 million overseas trips, and the number continues to rise.

Logistically, travel is a big deal for Australians due to our isolated geography. The US and Britain are among our favourites, despite the fact that the associated flights are lengthy and expensive. Thailand and Indonesia are a desirable option for those seeking something more affordable, and New Zealand remains the most popular destination of all.

Last year, Australians aged between 30 – 40 years of age spent $11.3 billion on overseas travel. Most saved for around 8 months to cover the cost of their trip, and our preferred modes of travel are vast and varied. We love structured tours, but we also enjoy going solo off the beaten track. Recently, the popularity of cruising has risen, and over the past few years, the number of Australians taking a cruise has doubled.

Our reasons for travel are many. We travel to visit family, for work, for pleasure, and even to shop. According to popular web-site Traveller, there are a number of reasons why our love of travel has become a deeply entrenched part of our culture. As a multicultural nation, we have many connections with other countries, and long to explore these. Our isolated location seems to work in our favour, because it necessitates lengthy travel times and this makes us feel justified in staying longer and exploring further. We are also a wealthy country whose four week annual leave entitlement provides the opportunity to travel far and wide. According to Traveller, the “cultural cringe” which is part of our national psyche, also plays a part. It refers to the belief that what we have in our own country isn’t nearly as interesting as what lies overseas, a kind of “grass is greener” philosophy that many Australians adhere to.

FACTORY DIRECT Benefits of travel

A family education

According to American author John Lehrer, travel fulfils a vital human need. “We travel because we need to, because distance and difference are the secret tonic of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything”. Travel makes us more interesting people, and almost guarantees we’ll never be stuck for conversation topics again. When someone asks what you’ve been up to, there’s nothing like coming back with “Well I’ve just returned from a trip to Antarctica where I fed penguins and slept on the ice”. The thrill of travel is such that returning can even lead to a case of the “post travel blues”, where our brain struggles to cope with the mundane after a period of constant stimulation while travelling. Seasoned travellers become aware that there are many different ways of interpreting the world around us. They accept people’s differences and avoid getting locked in to closed mind sets. The act of going overseas to “find oneself” is often joked about, but travel, particularly when undertaken solo, can put you in touch with yourself in a way that few experiences can.

Travel also provides an education that it is almost impossible to get from school, which is why a growing number of families are travelling overseas together. This may seem daunting initially, but following some simple tips can make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

VERTICALS | VENETIANS ROLLERS

1. Ensure that everyone has a say in the day’s activities. 2. Allow plenty of down-time, even when you are in the most exciting places on earth. Schedule time to chill out at a park or in the hotel room.

L SPECIA OFFER

3. Eat healthily and don’t have too many late nights. This keeps everyone calm and nourished. 4. Allow plenty of time – for everything. Rushing creates frazzled families. Allow extra time at airports, queues, and everything else. 5. Go ahead and do it.

Future of Travel According to Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic Airways, there are big advances ahead for overseas travel: “I have no doubt that during my lifetime we will be able to fly from London to Sydney in under two hours, with minimal environmental impact. The aweinspiring views of our beautiful planet below and zero-gravity passenger fun will bring a whole new meaning to in-flight entertainment.” Others predict that tourists travelling to other planets isn’t far off. When it comes to our desire to discover and explore, it seems that even the sky isn’t the limit.

FASHION with Carly Vidal-Wallace

Brisbane gets fashionable

UNE PIECE

COMING UP in the month of October, a month-long festival of all things fashion is happening in Brisbane, from runway events to pop up shops to information sessions. In celebration of Queensland’s blooming industry I thought I would take a moment to look at some of the local greats and the best buys at the moment for the coming season. All these local labels and more will be available all month of October in the Brisbane Fashion Month pop up store in the Wintergarden Shopping Centre.

Tyler Guides A Townsville based label, I absolutely love how Tyler er captures his audience and continues to create designs gns n which are snapped up year after year. Tyler has been en known to dress local politician MP Kate Jones, in his is designs for the 35+ female market. I am loving the blu blue lue e floral skirt and top from his latest arrivals.

Sun conscious, but also looking for a sexy alternative to the standard rashie? Brisbane label UNE PIECE has taken the world by storm with its “sexy rashie” selling out within days of launching and waitlists in place for limited colours. Don’t get burnt this Summer, look out for UNE PIECE.

Sport le Moda I am loving this crop top – at a time when you thought it was impossible to find something a little different for your work out, Brisbane label has come up with this awesome design which forces heads to turn due to its unique eye-catching design. gn. g n.

Rosalbah This local Brisbane label brings the glamour back into sleepwear, owner Rosa created the line for those women to have comfortable and stylish sleepwear that can also get you well into the day. I love the bright colour and silky feel.

All or Nothing Objects A little bling is always needed and I love these handmade statement pieces from All Or Nothing Objects, each design so unique. I love how accessories can change the look of any outfit and add a little bit of extra personality to your day.

hether it’s working a full-time job or running around after the kids, life can get extremely busy at times and this is when we tend to push our personal goals and aspirations to the side. We shouldn’t. It’s in these stressful times we tell ourselves - we’re too busy for the gym, too busy to go play golf, too busy to work on that million-dollar business idea – we’ve all been there. Truth is, we are never too busy to look after ourselves or do the things we love doing. It’s really important we find the time to achieve our goals, no matter how big or small! Here are a few tips to help you get back on track, this month: • Write down your short-term goals, things you would like to achieve within a month or two. To avoid becoming overwhelmed or getting frustrated don’t go overboard with these, three goals a month is plenty. These goals could be as simple as ‘clean the spare room’, ‘be able to do 20 push-ups in a row’ or ‘finish the first part of my business plan’. • Now ask yourself ‘What steps do I need to take to achieve these goals?’ Write them down next to that goal. For example, steps for cleaning the spare room could include; www.southcitybulletin.com.au | September 2017

Win Resort Runway and Cocktail Party

1. Sort through boxes 2. Throw out or donate anything not needed 3. Vacuum floor and dust down furniture • The steps you put down do not have to be done in one day, they can be scheduled for certain days or weekends or even one hour you know you have spare. As long as you’re doing little bits throughout the month, you will get there! When you have an action plan written down on paper, things become clearer and less cluttered in your mind. Much like a to do list, if you follow a goals list each month and take the necessary steps for each goal, you will feel less pressured to get everything done all at once.

CELEBRATE ALL THE COLOUR AND VIBRANCY of Queensland’s swim and resort wear with a spectacular evening of fashion at the Sofitel Hotel soiree deck on October 18th. We’re giving you the chance to win tickets for you and a friend to mix and mingle with designers, industry and fashion lovers while taking in the city views and the freshest fashion from Queensland designer labels including Adrift (pictured), Black Milk, Une Piece, Hunt + Kelly, Sport Le Moda, Sunsoaked Swimwear, Maecheck, Mely Simwear, Sinerji, Mara Swim and Jimena Alejandra accessories. Why is core strength and function important for a runner?

hether you are getting ready for your next parkrun, fun run or marathon, ma m arath thoon, most runners forget to strengthen st tre r nggth t en their core. The importance your core function far exceeds the of you of ur cor look lo ook ooff a ssix pack, but it is the very foundations fo ounda dation of all our movements especially in high demand ppatterns pa pat atterrns es like running. eexercises xerci cises li easy to forget core exercises, It iiss eas they do not give the same bbecause ecaus usee th endorphin een ndorp rphi h n rrelease and sweat of a good ccardio ca ard r io o sess session. But, without a strong ffunctioning fu unctiooning core you could:

Breakthrough Hearing Aid Technology • Increase your risk of injury and pain • Reduced balance and stability • Reduced gait and stride • Reduced breathing capacity • Slower response reactions resulting in higher run times Most associate core exercises with the traditional exercises like sit ups or back extensions, but these can actually result in pain or injury due to increased forces on the spine. So, some of the best core exercises for runners, should incorporate and duplicate the movement patterns of the running gait such as an integrated movement pattern (e.g. arms swings and leg movements completed at the same time), dynamic (moving rather than holding), core endurance (rather than heavy weights), and contralateral movement (diagonal opposite sides of the body). For this reason, an excellent core exercise for runners is the Horse Stance series. They are generally safe and effective for those beginning a back and core strengthen program, but you should still consider exercise professional for your individual requirements or any pre-existing conditions. This particular exercises supports the spine in multiple planes of movements, while placing little compressive or gravitational stress on the structure. It also requires the small stabilizer muscles of the spine to resist the spinal torsion created by the diagonal pattern.

This is how you do the Horse stance vertical, according to one of the world’s leading strength and conditioning coaches, Paul Chek:

we have the answer

1. Place your wrists directly below the shoulders and your knees directly below the respective hip joint. 2. The legs are parallel and the elbows should remain turned back toward the thighs with the fingers directed forward. 3. Place a dowel rod along the spine and hold perfect spinal alignment. The rod should be parallel to the floor. The space between your lower back and the rod should be about the thickness of your hand (not essential but it is a great physical guide to correct form). 4. Activate the transversus abdominis by drawing the belly button inward. Lift one hand off the floor to bring your arm in line with your body. The opposite knee is then elevated off the floor to the same height. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 8-10 times on each side, or as many times as can be performed with good form. 5. When lifting the hand and knee off the floor, do not let your pelvis deviate toward the side of the support leg. This faulty movement pattern will shift the work out of the core into the hip.

Diverse Community, Stronger Inclusivity St Laurence’s College is a Catholic school for boys in the Edmund Rice tradition. This year we strive to the theme of ‘Building on Strong Foundations’. Foundations that have accumulated from 102 years of the College’s proud history. More specifically, the senior cohort this year are focusing on the diverse community within the grounds and how this makes us stronger. As seen in Edmund Rice Education Australia’s touchstones, ‘Inclusive Community’ is one of the four that is more prominent in the Laurie’s community, and as seniors, we believe we

are honouring this and have achieved our own excellence as a result. The 2017 Year 12 class have a comprehensive understanding that leadership is not just about receiving a badge, it is rather everyone’s responsibility to lead the College through upholding the morals, ethics and vision of the great school that Lauries is, through faith and action. The understanding of this and our diversity of culture, religion, and the wide demographic of socio-economic variance, allows us to develop into the best version of ourselves.

Curious, Courageous, Christ-Led At Redeemer Lutheran College, we strive to create a welcoming culture by aiming to lead curiously, courageously and ultimately led by Christ. These are values that the college promotes from Prep to Year 12. Curious leadership challenges those around us in our community to not be satisfied living lives without purpose and to seek the best for the community. By opening our eyes to the little and big things in our lives, we aim to positively influence and shape all who we come in contact with in our everyday lives.

Leading with courage at Redeemer is encouraging all of the students to step out of their comfort zone. We aim to empower the students to have the courage to try, courage to fail and courage to turn to other people for help. This could mean challenging students to try a new sport or join a music group. Throughout every aspect of Redeemer, we aim exemplify Christian values. With this, as a leadership team we endeavour to be servant leaders with kindness, love, peace and patience and live out our school motto, ‘Our Hope is in Christ’.

Free to Dream Loreto College Coorparoo is proud to introduce our Co-Captains of 2017, Olivia Rogers and Bridgette Ryan. In 2017, we have aspired to lead the Loreto community through a focus on the virtue of Freedom. As young leaders of the community, we acknowledge our Loreto legacy and the qualities that are encompassed in our founder’s message, “Women in time to come will do much”. This legacy, in combination with the virtue of Freedom, drives us to ensure that 2017 is a year of love, compassion and optimism.

ins

School Capta

Freedom stems from self-acceptance, the acknowledgement of our imperfections and the delivery of our talents. With acceptance of ourselves comes the ability to respect one another. It is with the support of the nurturing Loreto environment that we hope all students will allow themselves the freedom to take risks, to make mistakes and in turn, to have the strength to learn from them. We encourage all Loreto community members to embrace our 2017 vision, “Let faith and trust be your path to Freedom”, and to live by the motto, “Free to Dream, Loreto ‘17”.

Big Plans & Bold Ambitions Shailer Park State High School’s School Captains, Devlyn Roberts and Makayla Henderson, and our Vice Captains, Tegan Frei and Tiara Singh, are leading the way with their big plans and bold ambitions. As leaders of Shailer Park State High School, they endeavour to ensure students achieve their goals and aspirations. Fully aware of their duties as captains, and proud of the manner in which they lead the school community, students never fear to speak to them if they’re ever having issues at school.

Our leaders positively express our school values – safe, respectful and responsible – as they are always willing to provide a helping hand in the school. With each of them going on to further education after school, they aspire to leave a legacy for future students. Through the guidance of their teachers, the captains have been able to make big plans and bold ambitions for future success. With students and leaders like our captains, Shailer Park continues to prove that it is one of the best schools in Queensland!

The Runcorn Way 2017 The eight months of the school year so far has been a tremendous success for Runcorn State High School and our Student Leadership Team. Along this journey the School Captains, with leaders across a range of disciplines, have worked together to uphold the school’s motto of “Pride Success Excellence”. Together as a team, we have organised a variety of events, including Valentine’s Day, Shave for a Cure, the 2017 Runcorn Talent Quest and multiple student musical performances. These events have brought Runcornians together, raised funds for multiple charity organisations and helped to form the legacy that we plan on leaving with this school; individual effort, united as “Blues”. By interacting with students

of all age groups including our Transition and Junior Student Leaders, we have promoted High Expectations and the four C’s, Cooperation, Courtesy, Consideration and Common Sense, creating a support system for our students. By collaborating with our teachers we have promoted our school’s approach to personalised learning and excellent teaching. We have encouraged all students to commit to high standards in their student performance and built our ethic of care by mentoring younger students. This journey has built fantastic friendships and camaraderie between the Captains, Prefects, our peers and all Runcornians. We are continuing to work hard to leave our mark in the history of Runcorn State High School. September 2017 | www.southcitybulletin.com.au

The Importance of Social Media

I

10

n this modern age of communication and information, every day more and more people are learning about the power of social media and the impact it has on our lives. But, with so many social media platforms available, how do we know which ones to engage with? Let’s take a look at some of the biggest social media platforms and the features that distinguish them. Facebook is the current social media juggernaut that has become so outrageously popular, some people might think you’re strange if you don’t have an account! It’s a simple yet powerful platform that can keep you connected to everything from friends and family, to your favourite monthly news publication (make sure to visit the South City Bulletin Facebook page!). It’s a great way to keep in contact with people you may not see every day or to get in touch with someone you haven’t spoken to in years. Facebook is also becoming a powerful

and cost-effective tool for businesses to grow awareness and engage with users. If you own a small business, having a strong presence on Facebook is a great way to attract customers and gain recognition in your area.

In second place to Facebook is Instagram, a growing platform that specialises in sharing photos and videos. Currently owned by the Facebook company, Instagram has grown in popularity over the years as smartphone cameras begin to rival the capability of traditional digital cameras, and Instagram allows users to easily edit their photos and share them with the world. It also has an intelligent algorithm that uses hashtags to aggregate topics, and can display a newsfeed of posts tailored to your interests based on photos that you have liked and shared. Next on the list is LinkedIn, the Social Media platform designed for professionals to connect and share their credentials. Users create profiles detailing their previous work experience, level of education, references and other important

credentials. Other users and potential employers can see this information and use it to contact individuals they may find suitable for an employment position. LinkedIn is an extremely powerful tool that has become essential for jobseekers. Last but not least is Twitter, a platform designed around sharing short messages or website links with the idea that everyone on the service can contact each other, and the choice is yours whether to respond or not. Every post is limited to 140 characters, which means you need to be concise and thoughtful with every post. Hashtags are used to connect topics and track trends, so you can always see what the world is thinking about. It’s a fun way to contact celebrities, corporations or high-profile personalities and get a response, rare as it may be.

HOLIDAY ESCAPES with Vicki Smith

T

rying to think of somewhere to take the kids in the upcoming holidays or just wanting to run away for a few days, the sunshine coast may be just the place to go. Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a few days in Noosa discovering the delights of this picturesque and fashionable seaside town. Noosa, once a timber and milling industry, started to attract tourists in the 1920’s who were longing for some seaside tranquillity. Nestled within a large reserve and ecosystem located approx. 130km north of Brisbane, Noosa is a hub of fashion boutiques, beautiful dining areas, relaxed beach lovers or avid bush walkers that set the scene for a perfect getaway. One of my absolute passions is to be in the water whether it’s just for a swim, to catch a few waves or go snorkelling. Main Beach Noosa may not be the Great Barrier Reef, but there

are plenty of fish and rocky outcrops to explore around the National Park headlands to keep any avid underwater fan entertained. When planning your escape to Noosa you may decide to treat yourself and stay in the action centre of Hastings Street or check out the surrounding quieter areas of Noosaville. For me I choose to stay at the Mantra French Quarter just at the edge of hasting street. From here I was able to walk across the road to sample some delicious ice-cream from Massimo’s Gelateria, trek 100 meters to stand on the beach or wander up Hastings Street to grab a coffee or a bite to eat at one of the many cafes and restaurants.

There are many hidden treasures in Noosa and one such treasure is the Noosa River and Canal Cruises which takes you along and around the Noosa Sound during the day or at sunset. I chose the sunset cruise and for anyone who is feeling a little romantic or wishes to celebrate an anniversary there is nothing sweeter than cruising for a couple of hours sipping on a champagne and watching the colours change in the sky as the sun sets in front of you. Great coffee, great food, picture perfect water ways and beaches, stunning views from the many walking tracks, pockets of rainforest to explore and wildlife to spot, who wouldn’t love to visit Noosa, suffice to say I will be going back as soon as I can and I hope that you to will be able to do the same. Cheers, till next time

USA-inspired Foodie Hot Spots

Inspired by the 5 boroughs of New York City - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and The Bronx - 5 Boroughs has harnessed fresh and local ingredients to recreate our favourite street eats from the Big Apple. This place is your one stop shop for burgers with the lot, with stacks featuring crispy onions and grass-fed rump and fried chicken katsu.

Unfortunately, not many of us have the ability to book a flight to the USA whenever we’re craving a stack of pancakes with bacon and maple syrup drizzle – sad, really. Luckily, we have the next best thing – our list of ‘go to’ American diners, cafes and restaurants in Brisbane.

nkb express If you’re on the West side of Brisbane, NKB Express should definitely be at the top of your list of American eats. The 1940s diner fit-out will transport you to the bustling streets of Brooklyn, and their menu definitely follows suit. For those of us that love a nice, hearty breakfast, and jump at the idea of a good ol’ American stack of waffles or bagel with the lot, then NKB Express has us sorted. Think waffles named after New York attractions (our pick is Coney Island, of course!), and hot dogs inspired by those you’d get from street vendors. www.nkbexpress.com.au 100 Coonan Street, Indooroopilly www.southcitybulletin.com.au | September 2017

getta burger Stemmed from a humble food truck, the guys at Getta Burger have perfected the Americanstyle burger. With a slowcooked meat of your choice, a fresh bun, your additions and the best sauce you’ll ever have – Getta Burger’s will top all other burgers. They also have a range of sides, and even offer fries INSIDE your burger what’s more American than that?? www.gettaburger.com.au Various locations

california native Feeling like something more from the West Coast? California Native has you covered. Think Mexican meets American. Our fav dish is the chowder. If that’s not your thing though, there’s plenty of burgers and tacos to keep your grumbling stomach at bay. It’s also a boutique bar, so we’d recommend checking out their Californian cocktail menu to complete the Californian experience. www.calinative.com.au 420 Cavendish Road, Cooparoo

EDUCATION, SKILLS & TRAINING with Amanda Sheehan

Spring Clean your Workspace Increase your productivity by following our simple tips!

T

here’s no better time to give your workspace some attention. We recommend you start by clearing the clutter! If you can’t see your desk over piles of paper and halffilled coffee cups, then it’s time to take action. Bin or file every item, keeping only the most frequently used or relevant papers on your desk. It’s easy to build up the superfluous at work. Too many personal items can clog up your space. Limit yourself to one or two objects that are visually pleasing and ditch the rest.

from the staff kitchen or other high traffic areas? If you have your own office, could you work better if your desk was in a different position within that room?

Is your desk in the best spot? It’s not always possible to move your desk around, but consider what might be a better option. Are you getting a bit of natural light, are you far enough away

Hide the cables. They are completely essential, but when on display they make for a messy and chaotic workspace. Use cable ties and go wireless wherever possible. Keep the essentials at your fingertips. Items such as note paper, pens and post-its should always be within arm’s reach, and in good supply. Get green. An indoor plant will not only add a peaceful feel to your workspace, but the plant will actually work hard to give you cleaner and fresher air to breathe.

Allocate time for a clean-up regularly and put it in your diary. You may begrudge the time this takes, but when you consider how much more productive you will be as a result, it makes perfect sense. Check your ergonomics. Standing desks are all the rage now – have you considered this option? If you would rather sit, think about how well your chair supports your back.

Re-think your filing system. Is it working for you? If not, take the time to reorganise and adopt a system that suits your needs. It doesn’t have to be alphabetical, there are numerous ways to file. Adopt the one that works best for you.

At the end of the day, aim to leave your desk in a tidy state. Coming in to work each morning to a clean and ordered space will set you on a positive and productive path for the day ahead.

Our Future in the Outdoor Classroom A

s one of the oldest early childhood education and care communities, providing families with support for almost 30 years, Early Birds Education & Childcare knows what it takes to keep children moving forward. We’re always hearing about the importance of limiting our children’s ‘screen time’. And while technology plays an integral part in early learning, nature is still one of the greatest learning tools we have to develop a child’s knowledge, wellbeing and sense of self. With technology present in our homes, schools and greater communities, being in the outdoors, away from digital screens is more critical than ever.

Playing outside in an unstructured environment offers children a sense of freedom that only nature and fresh air make possible. Being able to enjoy these times of calm, in the ‘good ole outdoors’ without distractions, is a useful skill that’s quickly diminishing in modern learning facilities. But nature isn’t just good for ‘going wild’. It also provides a means for children to be taught through more structured activities, and to put their learning into action. As Early Birds Educator and Centre Director, Lara Van Ling says, “supporting a child’s sense of self and recognising their independence, interdependence and connectedness with their world … can only truly be achieved once a child

has been given the opportunity to participate in decision making at home, in their educational setting, in the greater community and being in their natural environment.” By using outdoor spaces to intentionally teach skills that are often associated with the indoors, children are provided with a more inclusive community, where they can learn in a way that has meaning to them. Early Birds Education & Childcare staff strongly believe children must be provided the opportunity to learn using nature’s tools in order to develop into a well-rounded, confident and involved learner.
