Laughter The best medicine for body and mind and how we can do more of it

W

ho doesn’t love a good giggle? History suggests that we’ve loved to laugh ever since ancient times. Jokes from the ancient roman book Philogelos (Laughter Lover) still make us chuckle today. One such tale describes a barber who is reputed to talk incessantly while working. When he asks his next client how he would like his hair cut, the client swiftly replies, “quietly”. It’s a gag that could easily be found in a modern television sitcom, and demonstrates both the timelessness and universality of a good laugh.

What happens when we laugh? Laughter is a physical process that engages our entire bodies. Put simply, muscles throughout our

face, respiratory system and core body contract to force air out of our lungs. The vocal chords vibrate, and our hearts beat faster. Outer muscles become weaker and we lose coordination, impairing our ability to walk or sit straight. Described on paper, it sounds like a bizarre act indeed, yet the benefits of a good cackle are numerous.

Benefits of laughter When we laugh, the sudden influx of oxygen-rich air heightens our alertness, boosting memory and cognitive function. Stressful thoughts are banished, and our thought patterns are re-set to a healthier path. A Stanford University study found that twenty seconds of intense laugher increases blood flow to

Laughter Yoga

the heart and can help prevent heart disease and heart attack. On a social level, laughter improves relationships and bolsters your connection with others. It is impossible to stay angry when you are laughing. Unsurprisingly, a Norwegian study found that those who have a sense of humour have greater longevity than those who do not, particularly when battling terminal illness. Children laugh over one hundred times a day, but unfortunately for adults the number drops to under fifteen. Given all the benefits, the need to incorporate more laughter into our lives is a “no brainer”, making the laughter groups that have sprung up throughout Brisbane a great option.

Heather Campbell is a laughter yoga teacher who runs a weekly “laugh out” with The Gap Kookaburras each Saturday morning. Laughter yoga is practiced in over 100 countries world-wide, and arrived in Australia around 15 years ago. It is thought that it originated when an Indian physician, his wife and three friends began laughing in a park in Mumbai in the 1990’s and were joined by others who quickly recognised the benefits of the experience. Contrary to popular perception, a “laugh out” does not involve standing around telling jokes, but rather combining the deep slow cleansing breath of yoga with simulated laughter exercises. Sessions, which last around 40 minutes, incorporate the four key elements of clapping, playfulness, laughter exercises and the breath.

Heather believes that the laugh outs balance out the stress of everyday life whilst providing vital social contact. “Laughter yoga provides a release valve. Worries fade away. We’re playful, we’re having fun, we’re exercising, and it feels good! Laughter clubs also create social connections. Over a casual laugh, real new friends can be made”. But does “forced” laughter have the same benefits as spontaneous, natural laughter? Heather explains that our bodies don’t know the difference. “The body just knows that when we laugh, a series of physiological functions flow, including the release of happy hormones like endorphins. Just twenty minutes of hearty belly laughs can have you feeling like you are on vacation. However, one laughter session does not ‘fix’ you. It’s like any exercise, it requires repeated practice”. Even if you don’t feel “in the mood” for laughing, Heather says laughter yoga is still effective. “You don’t need to be in a good mood. You don’t need to have a reason to laugh. In fact, I went along soon after my mum Image by Michelle Wright

died because I knew it would do me good, physically and mentally. Some people (not laughers) thought it disrespectful. It wasn’t. It helped me get on and cope”. Heather encourages everyone to give a laughter club a go, even those who are initially sceptical. “Working in a circle, as a group, with good eye contact and smiles, it’s hard not to laugh. You may start out going through the motions initially, but burst those banks of seriousness and laughter may well flow freely”. Heather goes on to explain that the laugh outs provide a relaxed experience without judgement. “There’s no right or wrong way to laugh. I often encourage someone who is unsure just to smile because a smile is a laugh that’s waiting to burst”.

How you can incorporate laughter into your life: • Display amusing quotes and stories in your living space • Surround yourself with people who have a sense of humour • Read a joke book and share your favourites • Treat yourself to a funny movie • Learn to laugh at yourself For more information about the laughter club visit www.laughterclubsqld.com.au.

FASHION with Carly Vidal-Wallace

Winter is coming The cool months are creeping up on us at an alarming rate – before we know it the windy months of August will be upon us. Here are a few of the top trends to see you into the winter months. I am really loving the floral long sleeve dresses; these designs make them perfect for Brisbane weather.

Similarly, with the ever-popular loafer – like top pick from Nine West. Apart from being on trend, the loafer is great for these in between months, not quite cool enough for boots, but you need to keep those toes warm!

With all the extra jackets and layers we tend to wear, we need a great bag that has enough room for the extra scarf, as well as a great handle with enough room to get up and over our shoulder. Top pick would be the suede collection from Brisbane company Lounhide – great caramel colours as well which are key.

A few final picks – no winter is complete without a new scarf or shawl to keep those necks warm, or as an alternative in Brisbane to a jacket while the weather is still warm enough. You can’t go passed one of the collection from Louis Vuitton – like this silk/wool combo.

Lastly … don’t forget to treat your skin ladies – your face is your real beauty – treat yourself to some hydrating serum (your face will be glowing!).

One of the hardest thing in Winter is sometimes choosing the best jacket for the season. I have selected my ideal Winter wardrobe items. I know it always pops up – but you can never go passed a classic trench coat – these are so in demand there is a waitlist. These jackets go with anything from jeans to into the office.

I have also taken a liking to the full length grey wrap/maxi coat. This just makes me want to crawl up into it to get warm, and yet very stylish. In a complete opposite style the Sacha Drake short navy button up I think it perfect to add a little class to your wardrobe.

are delivery to seniors at home underwent a significant change on the 27th February this year. Older Australians were finally awarded the respect they deserve by having the autonomy to choose a provider who can create individualised solutions to meet their lifestyle needs and goals. Recently at Elements, we made a strategic decision to partner with Heather Hill Home Care (HHHC). HHHC was chosen over many of the larger care organisations for the simple reason that our values align. Elements and HHHC are both family owned and operated by women with strong business acumen and plenty of love and respect for seniors. Our businesses flourish because we understand that the needs of our clients are multi-faceted. Just as Elements do not just provide housing, HHHC does not just provide nursing care. Care at a most basic level is fundamentally about providing support and services to improve a person’s wellbeing. And wellbeing these days no longer refers to optimal physical functionality. A simple exploration of the elements of wellbeing will point towards psychological, social, financial

www.southcitybulletin.com.au | May 2017

and spiritual attainment, in addition to the more common physical wellbeing concerns that plagues most seniors. Finally, holistic wellbeing has woven into our political policy framework and the changes made to care delivery on the 27th February are making our industry an exciting space to be in. Over a period of 24 to 36 months, Australia underwent several major improvements in the senior care sector as we brace ourselves for the tsunami of ageing Australians. Firstly, nursing homes removed the arbitrary segregation of high care and low care. These days, when you move into a nursing home, it is simply because you need care and mostly because you are not able to receive care at home. This could be due to the fact that your care needs are complex and you either do not have a competent or willing carer to provide this care or your care needs cannot be safely delivered in the comfort of your own home. Secondly, delivery of home care changed from the cumbersome split of funding from State and Federal purses and definitions that befuddle care recipients. We now have a simplistic breakdown of 4 levels of care with level 1 being more supportive and pre-emptive

Come along to one of our upcoming events! MAY EVENTS: Chicken and Champagne Saturday 6 May, 10am - 11:30am Volunteers Appreciation Lunch Friday 12 May, 1pm - 3pm Happy Hour Friday 12 May, From 4pm Special Happy Hour: Ukele Musos & Sing-a-long Friday 26 May, From 4pm

to level 4 being more corrective and reactive. Finally, with this latest change allowing choice of care providers, seniors no longer depend on care fund allocation based on geographic boundaries. Instead, care funding will follow the “caree” and not the carer. And this last point is critical in optimising our tax contributions as, in the past, too much have been earned by paperdefined care providers receiving care fund allocations and brokering these funds to real carers and keeping up to 30% of funds. At Elements, we are just beginning to see the benefits of our partnership with HHHC. Our residents are encouraged to pool some of the care dollars to pay for accredited exercise physiologists to keep their bodies supple and healthy. We are also exploring using care dollars to pay for nutritionists giving us cooking classes

Join us for the fun! To book visit elementsliving.com.au or call 3299 3775 so we eat the right diet for our age. We will soon meet the team of cleaners from HHHC who will be dedicated to our village so we can build trust with the people whom we welcome into our lovely homes. Receiving care is no longer because you are old and sick. It is about caring enough about yourself to take care of the one life you have and live it to the fullest. Lest We Forget

H

undreds of people gathered around outside Diggers Services Club for their annual Anzac Day Dawn Service. Commemorating the 100th Year Centenary, this years’ service proved to be one of the most popular and one of the club’s busiest days of the year. The day began at 5:20am with The Band playing Waltzing Matilda, followed by a Catafalque Party from the Australian Defence Force, Lament by Piper Dan Bromley and speeches from the traditional owners and the formal addresses. Descendants from the Pioneer/ Maori Battalion performed the Hakka to Ancestors, recognising the Maori troops who served as part of the Native Contingent.

If you are an unaware of the history, major changes were made to the nature and form of the Maori military service in late 1915 and early 1916. The Native Contingent ceased to exist and the Maori troops were incorporated in the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, sometimes referred to now as the Maori Pioneer Battalion. In February of 1915, the first Native Contingent sailed from Wellington aboard the SS Warrimoo. They landed at Anzac Cove on 3 July 1915 where they joined the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. During the assault on Chunuk Bair in early August, 17 men of the Native Contingent were killed and 89 wounded. The Contingent was also involved in the assault on Hill 60 in late August and by September only 60 of the 16 officers and

461 other ranks who had arrived in July remained at Gallipoli. When the contingent was evacuated from the peninsula with the rest of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in December 1915, it had only two officers and 132 men. During the campaign 50 Maori lost their lives. Many ancestors, family and friends attended Diggers Dawn Service to pay their respects, placing flowers and poppies at the memorial during the laying of the wreath. After attendees stood for One Minute’s Sacred Silence, Arthur Bristowe sung the New Zealand National Anthem and Canterbury College Students sung the Australian National Anthem. The service was followed by a gunfire breakfast in the club’s restaurant. From 11am, club goers were entertained by performances from Andrews Sisters Tribute band and the Pipe Band, as well as Two Up in the Crystal Palace. Then after 2pm, club goers were delighted by performances from Mantra Trio Band and Bensen (Soloist from Soul Cutz Band). Diggers Services Club would like to thank everyone who attended the service – it was a very special day!

Whether it’s your local coffee shop, the hardware store on the corner or the lovely florist down the road, we all have that one place that we continue to go back to time and time again. The Chamber’s Business Distinction Awards are held every year around August, and in lead up to the awards night happy customers or clients can nominate their favourite businesses for awards in a range of different categories.

Navigate the Digital Waves Every marketing tool can be put in one of the two baskets: ‘Search’ and ‘Reach’. Overwhelming advances in technology has meant that Google Search has replaced Yellow Pages and classifieds in the ‘Search’ basket, while Facebook advertising has taken an increasing role in ‘reaching’ target audiences. Some fundamentals however have not changed, for example in the ‘search’ area:

1. Your business needs to be searchable in the right category / keywords 8 2. You need to be listed at the top of the pack 3. You need to advertise where people search for your product/service

f you run your own business, you’ll agree that sometimes things don’t go as planned and it can be quite tough. With changes in technology, legislation and new ways to improve your business, there is so much to learn and keep up to date with! That’s where the Springwood Business Owners Meetup comes in! Organised by Janice Porter and Rob Boon from the ABSS Business Network, the meetups aim to help local business owners grow and expand their business through educational presentations. Held on the first Wednesday of every month, the presentations focus on a range of different business topics. The current theme is ‘A Good Business’. Janice Porter says it all started as a way to reach other business in the Logan area. “We wanted to give businesses the opportunity to connect with others and build trusted relationships,” she says. Each presentation features a speaker who, depending on the topic, is an expert in their field. Last month, the group’s meetup presentation was run by Barry Hopkins of Victory Business Solutions who spoke on the topic ‘Why Businesses Fail – Protect Yourself’. The presentation ran through the problems businesses can face, gave useful tips on avoiding disaster and getting your business back on track. The presentation was then followed up by an online Q&A two weeks later.

Rob Boon and Janice Porter

Presented by Rob Boon himself, who is a specialist in Bookkeeping and Accounting, May’s presentation (May 4th) will focus on bookkeeping and what businesses need to know, including file disaster recovery services, general bookkeeping, payroll processing and BAS services. Then in June, the meetup will focus on Business Accounting and Balance Sheets. Rob says both are very important. “If you don’t know what your accountant is doing, you don’t know if somethings wrong until the ATO (Australian Taxation Office) start chasing you,” Rob says. Rob says he has many horror stories about people doing their accounts wrong. “It’s important you learn how to do things correctly, because your money could potentially be lost in the system.” Springwood Business Owners Meetup are held on the first Wednesday of every month and cost between $15 and $20 per person. For more information or to join the group visit meetup.com/en-au/springwood-business-owners-meetup

Calorie Counting is NOT Working!

C

ontinuing studies show “weight losers” regain their lost weight from 80% to 95% in the following 3 to 5 years. So, with the most commonly used weight loss strategy being calorie restriction or calorie counting, is it really working? Did you know other strategies have been proven to be more effective with long-term weight loss? The popularising of calorie counting can be traced back to a Californian doctor, Lulu Hunt Peters and her best-selling book from 1922–1926, Diet and Health, with the Key to the Calories. It has now become the mainstay of weight loss advice, yet obesity rates worldwide are being termed an epidemic. In Australia, our overweight and obesity rates have significantly increased from 56.3% in 1995 to 63.4% in 2015. These levels were around 15% in the 1980s.

Even the world’s largest diet company, Weight Watchers, dramatically changed their calorie counting system over five years ago because they found “calorie counting has become unhelpful”. David Kirchhoff, their CEO at the time, said they “needed a program that recognised that calories are most definitely not created equal”.

Weight loss strategies that DO work It is now better understood that losing weight is not just a mathematics equation with calories in and calories out equalling weight loss. The human body adjusts and adapts, and to get the desired long term weight loss, it has proven to be more complicated than first thought. Here are

some of the five best weight loss strategies to explore that do not involve calorie counting:

best diet will not overcome binge eating from emotional or stress based responses.

1. Specific macro-nutrients requirements: Determining the correct protein to carbohydrates for your body type.

5. Individualised exercise prescriptions for different personalities and body types.

2. Hormonal balancing: This includes the stress responses to our insulin (the fat storage hormone) levels. 3. Nutritional approach: Ensuring critical micronutrient absorption via quality unprocessed foods, essential fats and sugar intake. 4. Addressing emotional eating behaviours: The

I can safely say that counting calories is not working. If you are looking to lose weight long term and not be a ‘regainer’, you now have many more options to help you achieve better health and a better body. The Body Image Movement

W

hen you hear the words ‘body image’, what comes to mind? Is it a positive or negative association you have with those two powerful words? In this modern world - where so many people are chasing that ‘perfect’ body - body image is often viewed in a negative light. With social media bombarding our screens everyday with flawless fit bodies and gossip magazines doing the same, it’s no wonder why. What if I told you there was a person, a body of people, an entire movement that embraced image positivity? Would you believe me? There are actually numerous social media accounts and body image communities out there doing this, and they’re all about learning to love yourself and your body - exactly the way it is! Normal human traits like stretch marks, bellies and non-existent thigh gaps are celebrated and accepted within this movement and so they should be. www.southcitybulletin.com.au | May 2017

IQ Testing Benefits and Limitations What is an IQ test? An intelligence quotient (IQ) test is a standardised test of an individual’s ability to think and reason. Usually conducted over a 1 to 1.5 hour period, the resulting score can be used to diagnose learning disabilities, identify learning needs such as giftedness, and provide insight into learning styles of children. There are many different tests available.

Which one is commonly used? The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, (WISC-IV) was first published by US Psychologist David Wechsler in 1955, and is used to assess children aged 6 years to 16 years. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adults is available for testing those over 16 year of age. The test provides scores that represent intellectual functioning in four main areas: Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning,

Processing Speed and Working Memory.

Limitations of IQ testing

once someone is “labelled” with a low IQ score, they may lose motivation for learning.

Experts caution that whilst intelligence quotients are good predictors of academic success, they are unable to provide insight into a wide array of other qualities and characteristics which lead to a happy and fulfilled life, such as social skills and coping mechanisms. Robert Sternberg, Professor of Psychology at Yale University, achieved low scores on IQ testing which was conducted on him as a child. He is now an advocate for the limitations of IQ scores, believing that they do not measure “practical” intelligence. As IQ tests are conducted within strict time frames, he also believes that

Is a balanced viewpoint best?

they disadvantage those who require longer periods of time to process information. IQ tests cannot measure creative problem solving techniques that could potentially lead to medical break throughs and discoveries. As such, experts advise that caution be exercised in using an IQ test as the sole indicator for determining whether a child is gifted. Experts also fear that

Roger Highfield, author and editor of “New Scientist”, cautions against reducing individual intelligence to a number. “The brain is a very complicated organ. We need to think of intelligence like the Olympics. Is the gold medal winner in the marathon fitter than the gold medallist in the 100m sprint?’ Many experts agree that intelligence is too complicated to be condensed into a single number, and that an IQ test result is best considered not in isolation, but accompanied by other relevant information such as willingness to learn, creativity and fortitude.

don’t usually pay particularly close attention to every release of a new mobile phone, as incremental revisions and improvements happen so rapidly in the industry that it can be hard to keep up. However, there are two companies that will always get my attention when they release a new phone: Apple when they release a new iPhone, and Samsung when they release a new Galaxy. The reason these two product releases will always perk my ears up is that in my opinion, these are the industry-leading devices that set the latest standard in mobile phone technology. We took a look at the new iPhone back in October last year, and now Samsung have announced their latest

flagship mobile device: the Galaxy S8. The first thing you’ll notice about the S8 is it’s huge, almost bezel-less screen. What Samsung have dubbed ‘the Infinity Display’, the S8’s screen takes up over 80% of the front of the phone and stretches from one side to the other with some space left at the top and bottom for an 8MP frontfacing camera, plus the necessary bits and pieces needed to make calls – as well as room on the bottom for a regular-sized headphone jack. All that screen real estate means the physical home button has been done away with, and in its place Samsung have opted for an oddlyplaced fingerprint scanner right next to the 12MP camera on the rear of the device. Or you could simply use the

facial recognition feature and irisscanner to unlock your phone. The dust and water resistant S8 will also debut Bixby – Samsung’s version of Apple’s Siri. The interactive assistant is designed to streamline your interactions with the device, however it won’t be available until sometime after the phone’s launch. The S8 will be available by the time you’re reading this.
