Summer in Brisbane Our best tips to have fun and stay cool
D
o you have an extra spring in your step in the warmer months? If you feel more enlivened and energetic as summer approaches, it is with good reason – several, actually. Working up a sweat in the heat gives our circulation a boost and this lifts the overall feeling of wellbeing. In summer we are more likely to swim, and this gives one of the best workouts around. Water provides natural resistance and aqua themed exercises are suitable for all ages. The delicious variety of fresh fruits available in summer boosts our likelihood of eating healthy, and the looming Christmas holiday period puts us in a relaxed state of mind. Summer in Brisbane means longer, hotter days, with temperatures reaching 31 to 33 degrees on an average day, and the sun usually doesn’t set until after 6.30pm. Despite the heat, you certainly don’t need your own pool or air conditioning to enjoy the Brisbane summer.
Afternoon Activities Wynnum Foreshore – Where can you sit on your very own humpback whale, and have fun dodging its water spray? At the Wynnum Water Park of course. Wynnum has something for everyone. Enjoy a casual BBQ at the facilities provided or take a relaxing stroll along the jetty. A salt water wading pool complete with water slide is also popular. The best part about Wynnum is that it is almost guaranteed to be a few degrees cooler than Brisbane on any given summer’s day.
Redcliffe Lagoon
Southbank – As if the Lagoon and Australia’s only inner-city man-made beach weren’t enough, the Aquativity interactive water park adds a new dimension to this much-loved oasis. Enjoy markets, live entertainment, easy access to the city and a range of restaurants or facilities for outdoor fun. Good times can also be had at the Redcliffe Lagoon, which boasts shade and close

Sun Safe Chic
What do you do when you can’t find a stylish sun-safe rashie to wear in the harsh Queensland sun? You design your own of course!
WELL, that’s what Kate Davis-Steer of SunSoaked did and now her business is revolutionising the swim and resort world - offering pieces that are not only practical with UPF50+ Italian lycra, but fashionable and chic too. Kate’s SunSoaked venture all started back in 2012. “I went searching for a stylish rashie for a beach holiday back in 2012, because I was tired of getting burnt and the reactions I would get to sunscreen, as I have quite sensitive skin. On investigating, I was aghast at the lack of attractive options,” Kate says. From there, Kate - who has a background in design - put her skills to the test, taking the traditional sporty rashie and turning it into something fabulous. SunSoaked was born. SunSoaked pieces are now becoming instantly recognisable for not only their sun protective styling, but also their sophisticated print and ability to flatter any body type. Kate says the SunSoaked aesthetic is one of effortless chic.

“When I am designing each collection, I am inspired to create a range that complements our easy going Australian way of life and relaxed beach culture. Where your swimwear can take you from beach to street with ease, removing the need to have multiple changes of clothes throughout your day. Instead you have a summer wardrobe that transitions from the beach/pool to whatever you are doing next with family and friends.” Kate is inspired by the Italian Riviera and the glamour of old Hollywood, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren. “I like to inject a sense of glamour into my pieces but glamour that is relaxed and accessible so everyday women can incorporate it into their lives,” she says. The SCB team were given the pleasure of shooting some of Kate’s popular pieces in action. Take a look… To find out more about SunSoaked or to purchase these pieces visit www.sunsoaked.com.au

Rustic Cafes
I
t’s become a trend in Brisbane cafes - pallet tables surrounded by paint-scraped chairs, bare-brick walls and industrial looking ceilings, low-hanging exposed lightbulbs, and menus made of anything from old children’s books to clipboards. You’re either smiling, because you can already think of the numerous cafes you’ve been to that match this description, or you’re curious to know why cafes likes this have become so successful. Whichever category you have just fallen into, we have collated a list of some cafes that epitomise the rustic, boho style that we have grown to love.
St Coco Cafe
Burrow
Located on the South side of the river, Burrow offers the most rustic of venues - whether you’re looking for a coffee stop, somewhere for lunch or a place for Friday afternoon drinks. With mismatched chairs and tables of any height, deciding whether or not to eat outside or inside can be a challenge. The menu (which comes as a storybook - try to avoid getting sidetracked with the pictures and enticing storyline) is delightful, with a huge range of classic favourites and some sneaky exotic options for those who are a little more adventurous. No matter what you get, everything is delicious! theburrowwestend.com.au 52 Russell Street, WEST END

The Jam Pantry
Timber furnishings and enough greenery to make it seem like we were in the wilderness, yet humble and minimalistic, St Coco offers its diners a warm and cozy dining experience with some of the best burgers you’ll ever have. Complete with exposed floors and rustic stools, St Coco fits our description perfectly, and is only just down the road so you don’t have to venture too far for your caffeine fix! And with an exuberant offering of vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free eats, there’s no reason that St Coco shouldn’t go to the top of your brunch list this weekend! stcococafe.com.au 3 Cupania Street, DAISY HILL
Not quite as ‘exposed’ as Burrow, but just as quaint and cute, The Jam Pantry prides themselves on fresh and local ingredients and a fascinating, constantly changing menu. With blackboards that ‘flip’ on a regular basis, no two visits are ever alike. With uniformed waitresses smiling and ready to take your order, there’s no pressure to choose from the extensive menu of both food and coffee, as well as the feature wall of blackboard with the weekly specials. The Jam Pantry is your one-stop shop for your daily dose of perfectly decorated eateries, homemade jams, and deliciously decadent coffee. thejampantry.com.au 2/575 Logan Rd, GREENSLOPES
Billy Kart Kitchen
What was once a little corner shop is now something bigger and better than you’d ever image! Billy Kart Kitchen has taken a place that we once bought our newspapers and gumballs from into the home of the best pancakes you’ll ever have. Billy Kart Kitchen has so much history in the building and the staff, and is another one of those amazingly rustic cafes that we love. It’s also the trailblazer for its sisters in West End, which makes it even more special. Its seasonal menu offers diners something for every taste preference and palate, and it’s even open for dinner on Friday nights! Who knew you could do all of that with an old corner store! billykart.com.au/annerley 1 Eric Cres, ANNERLEY

Is the secret to great health found in your gut?
F
rom weight loss, disease prevention, mental health and our immune system, our gut health or more specifically our microbiome is looking like the secret to great health!!! With over 90% of scientific literature published on gut bacteria completed in the last 5 years, the understanding of the importance of our microbiome has significantly shifted. “Suddenly, we have come to understand that events going on within the gut, and specifically within the microbiome, have a dramatic effect in terms of virtually every important metabolic process that occurs within the human body,” explains Dr David Perlmutter, US neurologist and brain-gut health guru.
So, what is Microbiome? Simply, it is approximately 100 trillion bacteria
living in our small and large intestine. They help break down foods, help release certain nutrients such as vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, A, and K and play an important mportant role in protecting our immune system. tem.
How do you know if you have a problem? ? There is a fine balance between our good and our bad bacteria and if the balance (approx 5 to 1) is not maintained, we can experience symptoms such as gas, bloating, headaches, burping, rping, fatigue after eating, abdominal nal pain, constant hunger, and poor-quality or-quality stools or irregularity.
IF YOU DO HAVE A PROBLEM HERE IS FIVE SIMPLE TIPS FOR BETTER GUT HEALTH 1. Include foods that support and promote good bacteria – a. Prebiotic foods – carrots, sweet potato, onions, garlic, asparagus, leeks b. Probiotic food – (fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, kefir, kombucha, miso, and fermented vegetables 2. Probiotic supplementation – look at the number of strains and the overall volume eg. 5 strains and 25 Billion as a guide. 3. Reduce the use of antibiotics. As well as killing the bad bacteria it also kills the good bacteria. 4. Reduce stress. Elevated stress has a direct impact on the balance of our gut bacteria 5. Reduce processed foods and sugars from your diet. These support the growth of our bad bacteria.
Gut health is now one of the fastest growing areas in Nutritional Science and can very well improve your health and longevity with some simple steps and modifications. Core Health Coaching | corehealthcoaching.com.au

Young Fashionista’s Label Explodes WHAT STARTED OUT as a hobby for 22-yearold Laura McCulloch - designing clothes for her and her friends – has exploded into a full-blown business, making unique festival wear for young women all around Australia. Laura McCulloch started her fashion label ‘ZAliE’ in 2015 after graduating with an Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design from the Australian Institute of Creative Design. Laura says at first, she was just looking for a designer job, until she noticed a huge interest in the outfits she m made ade and wore to festivals.
my studies and festival-wear lets me add a little bit of craziness to people’s figures.” Laura says. “I love being in fashion, when people purchase my things it’s crazy to think that they’ve planned a whole look around one or more of my pieces and they’re so excited to wear it to their event.” At the moment, Laura is as one-woman-band making everything herself – when she’s not at her other design job. “One of my main priorities is making ZAliE big and I therefore work every morning and night and all my days off on it,” she says. We were lucky enough to do a photo shoot with Laura, repping some of her most popular outfits! Take a look at what this young whiz on the sewing machine can do!

with its bright fabric and sleek cut. Laura says she fell in love with the fabric and immediately purchased all the stock available (now she’s almost sold out). The Candy Mini was inspired by 90s icons such as Kate Moss, mixed with the bright colours of the 80s.
“Girls were constantly asking me about my outfits at festivals, which I had made from scratch for myself. From there I decided to create my own label, based on festival wear - for young girls who like to party hard, sing loud and turn heads. I always had a thing for Avant Guard’ throughout

Laura recommends: Wearing this outfit with Roc Boots knee lace ups and a fiddler cap. For accessories, some fluffy earrings would look perfect.

The Modern Resume Put your best foot forward with our essential tips
4. Remember that every single word in your resume should, wherever possible, relate to your experience, your skills and work experience. Keep it simple and avoid waffle. Your resume should be no longer than two or three pages in length.
R
ecruiters say that it takes a mere six seconds to make a decision about whether an applicant is right for the job based on their resume. Employers are usually inundated with applications for any given position, so it is vital that you make yours stand out from the rest. Breaking down your work experience and skills into dot points is no longer the only option available when compiling a resume. There are many different lay-outs and mediums available. Today’s resumes can be dynamic, living documents that are as original as they are innovative, or they can be simply structured without all the bells and whistles. Layout choices are infinite, ranging from conservative documents with straight-forward formats, to online versions through which prospective employers can view work samples and footage www.southcitybulletin.com.au | November 2017
of personal introductions and relevant details. Many websites offer examples of varied designs and content, and others will compile your resume for you for a fee. Regardless of which layout or technique you use, here are some essential tips for creating the most informative and relevant resume: 1. It is essential that you research the duties of the job you are applying for, and ensure that
your work history highlights your experience and qualifications in those specific areas. Make it easy for your prospective employer to make the connection between what you can offer and the role for which you are applying. 2. Feature your name and contact details at the top of each page, and add a simple covering letter to personalise the document. 3. Use key words, but not the clichéd ones such
5. Remember you are producing a marketing document and you are the commodity. Ensure your document is free from errors. Have a friend proof read it for you to make sure.

NEXT YEAR will mark a significant milestone for the Primary School at St Laurence’s College. From 2018, Year 5 and Year 6 will move into the newly renovated and purpose built Brother Hogan Building, which will create a selfcontained precinct that includes new contemporary learning spaces that will allow staff to deliver the curriculum in a modern and dynamic way. 21st century learners need to develop a different set of skills and will require different types of knowledge to be successful and wellequipped for future jobs. Our NEXUS Academy, a unique and exciting partnership with local universities, designed to expand students’ understanding of all the opportunities before them and to build the brightest of futures for themselves, has gone from strength to strength providing students with unique and exceptional experiences in the STEM area.
We take pride in offering a range of educational pathways for students across vocational and academic pursuits. In 2018 we will continue our journey of improvement, come see for yourself. Shailer Park High continues to shine!
DOING SCHOOL DIFFERENTLY Our “Success STARTS here…” vision has created a school with the flexibility to reduce barriers and offer individual programs designed for each student. Each of our students can combine work, training, certificates, family commitments and a multitude of other activities with their senior schooling in order to achieve a successful education. In 2010 we had 1 campus with 50 students. In 2017 we have 3 campuses, with a goal of 725 amazing students reengaged in Year 10, 11 and 12 with a 97% pass rate. Our focus is on passing as failing means doing it again and getting it right! We’ve created a school with 193 senior students in 2017 who will graduate with resilience, confidence and the right tools to move on to the next phase of their journey.

HOLIDAY ESCAPES with Vicki Smith
My Passion for Photography
12
ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END, this will be my final article for South City Bulletin and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my little holiday escapes with you all over the past 12 months. I pondered a while on what I was going to write for the last time and I decided to share one of my greatest loves and passions. You see, when I was young growing up in the Victorian countryside my father would get me up early on weekends and we would go and catch the sunrise. We would sit and chat about the past week and I would tell him about school and what conspiracies my friends were up to or we would sit and just take in the beauty of the early morning listening to the bird sounds. My father would often take pictures with his camera and at times let me take some as well. One day he handed his camera over to me and said “it is yours now”, from that moment I was hooked. Photography has brought me so much, from the days when I would save to buy a film and then save again to have it developed hoping that I would get some decent pictures, to developing black and
white photos in my father’s darkroom, to the start of the digital age and my first digital camera. With the new technological advances in photography the world is there to be captured, yes, I’m addicted to taking photos. I love all kinds, landscape, portrait, macro, black and white, but the one passion that remains my favourite is still to capture sunrises and sunsets wherever I go. I can’t help it, whether it’s out on an island and witnessing a magnificent sunset to getting up early to catch the start of the day before the mundane things like work get in the way. I guess my final message here is that I would love for you all to take time out of your busy days, get up early or finish your daily activities in time to capture the sunrise or sunset, it will brighten your day, it will make you feel alive, don’t just leave it for holidays, do it now. I wish everyone joy and laughter as another year comes to an end and it’s been a pleasure to share my stories with you. Photo: Vicki Smith | www.vsphotographyandart.com

Tinnitus on the Rise
W
ith the rise of interactive technologies involving the use of headphones and headsets, hearing loss and tinnitus is becoming more and more common in today’s society. For this reason, All Ears in Hearing have started a trial tinnitus program to help those suffering and are encouraging others to protect their ears! If you’re not quite sure what it is, tinnitus is a physical condition experienced as noise or ringing in the ears or head. Audiologist, Rachel Gibson says tinnitus can be caused by a number of things. “For most people it can sound like ringing or buzzing in the ear, sometimes it can even sound like crickets or a jack hammer. Everyone experiences it differently and for some it can come and go,” she says. “It can be caused by things like stress, excessive noise exposure (chainsaws, machinery, rock concerts, clubbing etc) and in more severe cases could be signs of an ear disease.” www.southcitybulletin.com.au | November 2017
For many, tinnitus can cause sleep deprivation and communication issues. Rachel says there is no cure for tinnitus, but it can be managed. “Unfortunately, there is no cure for tinnitus there are only strategies to help manage it. Some strategies we use include; sound therapy with soft background noise, relaxation strategies, hearing aids or devices and even an app on your phone.” “Our tinnitus program consists of five appointments, where you learn all about tinnitus - what it is, how it’s caused and what you can do to manage it. From there, we will put together an individualised management plan.” If you’re thinking tinnitus is just something the older generation suffer from – you’re wrong! Rachel says she sees younger patients coming in every day, including people in their 20s and young children.
work if you work in a loud environment or turning the volume right down on your iPod or music device.” Rachel says she follows two rules when it comes to determining whether an environment is too loud: •
If someone is yelling at you from just one metre away and you can’t hear them, it’s too loud.
•
If others can hear the music coming from your headphones, it’s too loud.
If you’re suffering from tinnitus or think you might be, All Ears in Hearing’s Tinnitus Program runs over 5 appointments, including hearing tests, counselling, sound therapy, relaxation strategies and a follow up test and is only $495. When you mention South City Bulletin you’ll receive your consultation free (usually $95). “It used to be that 1 in every 6 people suffered from hearing loss, it is expected to increase to 1 in every 4 due to leisure activities including video gaming, smartphone activities and things like clubbing,” Rachel says. “We need to be careful - especially children and teens - with our ears. We need to prevent excessive noise exposure and protect our hearing before it’s too late. Things like using ear plugs or muffs at

EB Expo returns to the Gold Coast
F
or the past six years, in early October one of the biggest video game events in Australia has taken place: the EB Expo. The two-day convention has been hosted in Sydney for the past few years, however 2017 saw the gaming extravaganza return to where it all started, at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. Running from Saturday to Sunday, the EB Expo is a celebration of all things gaming and geeky. Gigantic, flashy booths occupy the majority of the show floor where fans get an opportunity to play some of the most highly anticipated games from the biggest names in the industry such as Nintendo, Ubisoft, Sony and Microsoft. Or if you prefer something a bit more old-school, you could spend some time in The Arcade or Free Play zones where dozens of arcade cabinets, pinball machines and retro consoles are set up for you to try at your leisure – and you can always find someone up for a round of Street Fighter!
More Than Just Video Games If your feet need a break from running between gaming booths, arena shows run all day long so you can sit down to watch Exhibitor presentations, cosplay competitions or even a Buffy The Vampire Slayer 20-year fan party. You’ll also get a chance to snag a bargain at the world’s biggest EB Store
where sudden special offers are frequently l announced. Also worth the price of admission alone is getting to see the myriad of attendees flaunting incredible cosplay designs featuring characters from all forms of pop-culture (I’m already planning my costume for next year). I had a great time at this year’s EB Expo and I’ll definitely be heading back next year. If this sounds like your type of event, make a note in your calendar around June next year to check your local EB Store for ticketing and event information.

Floral patterns add a country feel
Floral-patterned blinds are becoming extremely popular in the interior design world and many people are using the idea in their homes. “A customer of ours, recently changed the colour and texture of her kitchen bench to a lighter coloured Caesar stone and it has given the room a real lift. She paired this with a single floral-patterned roller blind and with her existing timber cupboards, the addition has given the kitchen a lovely contemporary country style vibe,” Lisa says.
R
enovations can be tough. Finding the right colours, styles and pieces to fit your interior, can be a lengthy process - especially if you’re doing it by yourself. Although, TV shows like The Block and House Rules give us great insight into what different styles and options are out there and what could work in certain circumstances, there are still a lot of style elements you need to consider. If you’re renovating your home right now, blinds could be a great and simple way to jazz things up. We spoke to expert Lisa Smith from Sun Stop Blinds to get her top blind styling tips…
Greys are back
Grey and plain colours were once a thing of the past, but according to shows like The Block they’ve made their way back into stylish homes all over Australia. Lisa says greys are an in-vogue thing now, with a lot of people painting their walls with a grey base.
A style change will do wonders
“Warm colours are popular, like charcoals and greys. I have found that instead of crazy colours on the walls, people are sticking to plain or warm colours and using cushions with textures or bits of wall paper to jazz things up and add a touch of colour. So, our plain coloured blinds have been quite popular,” she says. Lisa says a lot of people are wanting their blinds to match their wall colour, which is something Sun Stop Blinds can do.
“One of my friends did a complete renovation of her lounge room with new plaster, paint and timber flooring. When it came time for new blinds she wanted the blinds to match the walls, so that her dark lounge and flooring could be the feature of the room. I asked what colour the wall paint was and if it was Dulux - we can usually match the most popular colours with our Elegance or Vibe ranges. The paint she had used was “Antique White USA” and that was one of the colours in our Elegance range. Without even seeing the colour she trusted me and was very happy with the results when they were installed.”

Lisa says sometimes all it takes is a change of style to change the look of the house. “Try going from a vertical to a roller or a venetian to a vertical. Mix it up a bit. It could change the look of the house and really open up the space,” she says. “I find a lot of customers, want me to come in and just replace their old blinds with new ones and that makes a really big difference too. I love seeing the transformations and the finished look.” For more information or blind tips visit

Get Your Back in Action
M
illions of people worldwide suffer from spinal disorders, which include lower back pain, scoliosis, arthritis and disc disease just to name a few. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that 1 in 6 Australians are actually suffering from back problems and this can often lead to poorer quality of life, psychological distress and disability. Do you suffer from back problems too? At Andrew Gorman Chiropractic we are encouraging our patients and you - the Southside Community - to start a conversation about spinal disorders and take the necessary steps to improve your spinal health.
As healthcare professionals who focus on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, chiropractors are well-placed to offer preventative and lifestyle advice regarding chronic back pain. We aim to restore and maintain normal spinal function, collaborating with other healthcare professionals where necessary. Last month, we celebrated World Spine Day, which was themed ‘Your Back in Action’ – and the message is really important. Did you know, that our spines are not designed to be stationary for long periods? Just by keeping active and incorporating exercise into your daily routine you can actually improve your back problems.
We know what you’re thinking, this is going to involve strenuous and complicated exercises! Not necessarily. All you have to do is start with these simple, easy and effective tips… • • • •
Try parking further away from work or getting off a stop earlier to incorporate walking into your daily routine. Take a moment to assess and correct your posture if you are hunching or slouching. Stand up and stretch - your spine will thank you for it. Hold your mobile device at eye level to avoid looking down at your phone. Be mindful of your posture as you go about your day.
•
The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) has developed the Straighten Up app to help with improving posture and incorporating exercise into your daily routine. Download the Straighten Up (Australia) app to receive reminders and helpful tips on how to improve your spinal health.
World Spine Day is an initiative of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health (formerly Bone and Joint Decade) that aims to raise awareness about the serious impact of spinal disorders. This year’s theme emphasised the importance of healthy spinal posture and activity, which promotes body awareness and minimises the day-to-day wear and tear on the spine. Please, look after your spine! If you suffer from headaches, back pain, sciatica, disc issues or any other spine related problems, give Dr Andrew at Andrew Gorman Chiropractic a call and see if he can help you!
