You should dance! Why you need to forget about your two left feet and hit the floor

ave you ever sat back at a family celebration and watched a group of dads and granddads doing the chicken dance with complete abandon? Or a toddler dancing the “Nae Nae”, the Hip Hop craze that took the world by storm last year? These budding Baryshnikovs have one thing in common: they’re dancing like no one is watching and they are having a ball. Throughout time, dancing has played an integral role in celebrations, religious rituals and entertainment. What is it about dancing that continues to captivate humanity regardless of age, culture or background?

H

Dancing in the womb

Psychologists believe that the origins of humanity’s love affair with dance stems back to well before we are born, when our developing ears and bodies become accustomed to listening and moving to the rhythmic beat of our mother’s heart. In utero, this dominant sound fills every moment for the developing foetus, thereby

establishing what will be a life-long attraction to moving to the beat of music. Ancient Greek Philosopher Plato said, “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.” It seems that consciously or subconsciously, people see dancing as a lifegiving force that feels both natural and mystical. Dancing is a tightly woven thread throughout the tapestry of human history. In India, 9000 year old cave art displays scenes of dancing, alongside other aspects of life such as hunting and childbirth. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks used dance as part of their spiritual rituals, as evidenced by archaeological finds including stone carvings and the written word. These days, there are more dance styles than you could ever hope to poke a stick at. Line Dancing, Hip Hop (street dancing), Jazz Ballet, Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Tap Dancing, Ballroom, Salsa, Nia and even line dancing all mean that there are options for everyone, regardless of age or ability.

Burn up the floor and the calories

Scientists from the University of Brighton have found that swing, contemporary and street dancing are more efficient tools for weight loss and fitness than running, swimming or cycling. What’s more, dancing improves spatial orientation, balance and peripheral vision; it wards off osteoporosis; and it reduces the risk of coronary diseases and high blood pressure.  Page 8

Holiday in style Packing for your country weekend away “Brisbaneites” love to get away at Easter. Back-to-nature style holidays are trending now more than ever. Going slightly inland or up the mountains means the temperature can drop slightly. So it’s always tricky to know the best items to pack for your getaway, and how to add a little bit of glamour and style to your weekend. Here are a few essentials to match practical pieces back with a glimpse of elegance.

A GREAT T-SHIRT STYLE DRESS. With this style you can layer and add leggings underneath and a cute cardigan for the cooler evenings. You can also accessorise if you need something feminine and pretty for a casual dinner. I LOVE The Great Beyond 100% Bamboo navy Bianca Shirt Dress; it is so soft and falls beautifully. Have a long-sleeved on hand too, in case the weather turns cold. A classic Hermes scarf can dress this one up, and it even looks good with your Akubra hat. With this one dress you can create a few styles and pack lightly. Biance Shirt Dress www.the-great-beyond.com

COMFORTABLE AND PRACTICAL SHORTS. At some stage you might need to go hiking, pitch a tent or run around with the kids. I love Kathmandu’s stretch cotton longer length canvas cargo shorts. They are a great length and have a nice stretch. Made of organic cotton they are super soft. Johore Women’s Stone Shorts www.southcitybulletin.com.au/shop

A STYLISH TOP: Wearing hiking shorts does not mean you can’t match back with a stylish top like a Review Check Dorothy Bodice. I love to add a scarf detail to give that extra ‘je-ne-saisquoi’. Dorothy Bodice Midnight www.southcitybulletin.com.au/shop

LIGHT, FRESH FRAGRANCE: Finally, you can smell great while getting back to nature. FROM THE EXPERTS

SKIN HEALTH with Claire Mason

Hormones and our skin health Our body is filled with hormones and they all affect us in many ways. This month we’re taking a look at the main hormones that affect our skin health and what they do. Insulin Insulin regulates the glucose in the blood. We need to keep our insulin levels balanced as excess insulin accelerates wrinkling of the skin. A healthy diet that excludes high-sugar foods will keep those insulin levels in check.

Have any questions for our experts? Drop us a line at AskExperts@southcitybulletin.com.au

To keep healthy oestrogen levels and to stay young, vibrant and healthy-looking, all you need to do is eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and do everything that composes a healthy lifestyle – including not touching alcohol or tobacco. Life will also be much more enjoyable once you’re taking care of your body and mind. Testosterone Testosterone is the main androgen hormone in males, and is in females to a lesser extent. Excess testosterone can cause acne breakouts on the face, back or chest, skin tags and weight gain. As women age, they see a rise in testosterone and a decline in oestrogen. With men, it is the opposite. To keep testosterone levels healthy, avoid stress, exercise regularly and eat foods high in phytoestrogen like chickpeas and lentils.

Cortisol Cortisol is linked to stress and can have terrible ageing effects on your skin and immune system, causing a myriad of problems. To keep your cortisol levels in check, learn to relax and do things that make you happy.

6

Oestrogen Oestrogen is primarily produced in the ovaries and is abundant in females; however, it is also found in males. A decline in oestrogen can affect skin moisture and elasticity, wrinkle formation and skin thickness. During periods of extreme hormonal production, such as pregnancy, oestrogen can create melasma – small dark spots. But these disappear once oestrogen regulates.

HEADACHES & MIGRAINES with Bertrand Doeuk

Have you found a solution for your headaches and migraines that works? Is this the year you determined to finally do something about your headaches and migraines? Knowing how to confidently manage these debilitating migraines is the key to you succeeding with yours resolutions to live pain free. In my Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic, I often find sufferers trying all sorts of intervention that only treat the secondary issues, rather than treating the primary underlying cause. Research and evidence have revealed a link between chronic headaches and migraines and an irritated and sensitised brainstem. Fortunately, with this research there are now safe and effective treatment solutions to desensitise the brainstem to significantly reduce, if not stop, headaches and migraines for good. The best thing about this treatment is that it does not require any surgical intervention, electrical devices or even medication. Either a previous injury to the neck or head, or poor postural issues are the main culprits in causing the brainstem to become hypersensitive.

As a result when the brainstem is sensitive, it reproduces headache and migraine-like pain into the head. The brainstem is located in the upper three cervical spine of the neck. Treatment is highly effective if the patient’s headache and migraine pain can be reproduced and resolved by applying specific pressure along the upper three vertebras of the neck. If this can be achieved in the first consultation, there is a high probability to significantly reduce if not stop headaches and migraines. Have you had your neck and brainstem assessed by a headache practitioner? If not, contact my clinic now and book in for a consultation. The solutions to this debilitating condition could be quite simple.

BEAUTY with Sam Lee

Create and maintain perfect eyebrows urning your brows from blah to beautiful will change everything about your face. Your eyebrows have the ability to completely change your face but unfortunately are usually forgotten in the makeup routine. When your eyebrows are properly shaped and sized for your face not only do they make your eyes pop, they balance out your face and make you appear more youthful.

T

Locating your individual perfect eyebrow shape.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a one-size-one-style-fitsall for eyebrows. But with this method it’s easy to create your perfect brows.

Find the beginning

Start by lining something straight up against your nostril towards your eyebrow (Line A). This will help determine the beginning of your brow.

Arch

www.southcitybulletin.com.au | March 2016

For the arch (Line B), line up your ideal arch peak spot with the outside of your iris. This will indicate the natural spot your brow should peak at. If your arch isn’t sitting on that spot have no fear as that’s what we have brow products for.

Ending

To find where your brows are meant to end, make a line (Line C) from the outer nostril to the outer corner of the eye.

Bold brows

Anastasia Beverly Hills FIVE PIECE BROW KIT $99.00

Growing out your brows can seem daunting and the approximate length of time to suffer through it is 6 months. Then go and see an eyebrow specialist to get you back on track and to make sure you get it right. If you think you can handle the DIY they, following the above diagram will aid in getting the perfect brow shape.

L’OREAL PARIS Brow Artist Genius Kit $24.95

Bold brows have never been so on trend, but unfortunately a lot of us are holding onto our thin brows for no good reason. One major reason to abandon the days of over plucking is bigger brows literally shed years off our face.

Brow maintenance

When choosing between tweezing, waxing or threading, it’s always advised to stick to tweezers because you have far more control over every single hair you intend to get rid of. Waxing can pull at the skin and cause unnecessary injury. Threading is a preferred method as it pulls the hair but the thread is held away from the skin.

When tackling your brows you need to be well equipped with a clean spoolie brush, brow pencil or powders and brow gel. Choose the right brow pencil for your hair colour then it’s simple to fill in any sparse gaps with a light brush stroking motion.

Who will you vote for? Council elections are looming and it’s time to get to know the Candidates he time is coming soon when you can tell your local Council who you wish to represent you and lead your ward or Council – through your vote. Candidates for both Logan City Council and Brisbane City Council are campaigning strongly, putting their vision forward wherever and whenever they can. Decisions! Decisions! What defines whether a politician is good or not? Is it whether they actually GET the job or their ability to DO the job? This was a question put forward by author Kaye Lee, who then came across an article written by former member of the US House of Representatives, Lee Hamilton. He said, “The press and public often pay attention to what politicians say, but less to how well they do what they’re supposed to do.” He went on to say that “relatively little attention is focused on examining closely whether someone serving in or running for Congress has the personal attributes it takes to be an effective member of the institution.” Hamilton lists some of those attributes: honesty, high energy, focuses on the job, embraces challenges and listens carefully to those on the ‘other side’. LUKE SMITH Candidate for Mayor of Logan Tel: 0409 345 793 Email: luke@lukesmith.com.au Website: lukesmith.com.au

Which suburb do you live in? I live in Windaroo. I am married with three daughters aged 19, 15 and 5.

What qualities do you bring to the position? I was born and raised in Logan City and have the local knowledge and experience in leadership from my ten years as a Logan City Councillor, including eight years as Chair of Finance, Governance and Economic Development. I have delivered seven surplus budgets and city-wide initiatives such as the popular Eats and Beats events. Over the past decade I have gained a unique understanding of the challenges Logan faces and the resources and infrastructure needed to address these challenges. Logan City Council and Brisbane City Council elections tick a lot of these boxes and have some things in common: a strong focus on community, a history of residing in their area, and experience in business and not-for-profit management positions – and above all passion. With such a quality line-up of candidates it won’t be easy to decide whose box to tick on Election Day. Rest assured, these candidates are devoted to serving the communities in which they live. More information on the candidates can be found online in our ‘Council Election 2016’ forum. www.southcitybulletin.com.au

What will be your key priorities if you are elected? As Logan Mayor, my direction and policies are all about what our city, and our residents, need in the coming years, whether it’s investment in public transport, responsible economic management or public safety initiatives. At the same time, I will not make multi-million dollar commitments that I know Logan ratepayers cannot afford. Having been the Chair of Finance for the past seven years, I am acutely aware of what we, as a city, can afford to deliver and what we can’t. One of my greatest priorities will be getting Logan on the state and national agendas to ensure we are not left out of key infrastructure funding like the roll out of the NBN or much needed transport connectivity such as the Pacific Motorway and Mount Lindesay Highway.

Which suburb do you live in?

I live in Regents Park with my wife of 36 years. I have three adult children and two granddaughters.

What qualities do you bring to the position?

What qualities do you bring to the position?

I will bring a higher standard to representing the ward of Runcorn. A lot of decisions have not been carefully considered nor executed properly. Further, I bring my entrepreneurial drive. This spirit of moving forward allows us to change things for the better. Many politicians are constantly struggling to keep up with reactive problems. I will strive to conduct preventative and proactive solutions, rather than reactive, to the issues of the ward.

I have held community, church leadership and business ownership positions since my late teens and have successfully demonstrated a unique ability to build and grow teams to bring out the best in those whom I serve. I have pioneered and run many organisations and chaired numerous for-profit and not-for-profit company boards. I am a down-to-earth man, of transparency and integrity, who has a passion for people to reach their individual best.

What will be your key priorities if you are elected?

What will be your key priorities if you are elected?

Tackle traffic congestion and improve development planning and public transport: Our city will continue to grow and we cannot afford to improperly approve developments without adequate and appropriate public infrastructure in place. This is critical. The execution of public transport service has been poor and our city has lost 2.2 million passengers in the past year. This can’t continue as it will ultimately cost us a lot more. That’s why we are introducing an interim measure called ‘Fare Free Friday’ to keep people on public transport until further reforms roll in.

My core objective is to be a transformational change agent within community, while recognising I don’t have all the answers; nobody does. However, I do see the residents of Logan as my greatest resource with whom I must collaborate in order to lead this great City of Logan forward.

More infrastructure: I am committed to fix Coopers Plains Rail Crossing, which is much needed. I have also proposed a free public Water Playground for all the young families residing here. From my research, 47.5% of all residents in this ward are associated with a young family with children. Properly executing the basic services: These include potholes, bins in parks, toilets, footpaths, tree maintenance, upgrading school drop-off zones and the likes.

My primary objectives are to Listen, Learn and Lead, to nurture healthy and growing communities. I will build our city as a team where each player, resident and community is equally important. I will put families and their wellbeing front and centre because great families produce great children who become amazing adults that build a strong community. I will continue to lead the economic growth of Logan by making our city attractive to all levels of business, gathering around me community members with vision and aptitude for economic development. I have a vision for the creation of a Global Village in Logan – an International Stadium, Theme Park and Entertainment Precinct. March 2016 | www.southcitybulletin.com.au

The benefits are not all physical. Dr Nick Smeeton found that dancing also increases positive emotions and combats feelings of fatigue as dance classes usually take place in a group setting, Psychologists have found that dance students and professionals feel less isolated and have greater social skills and confidence when meeting new people. What really seems to set dancing apart from other forms of exercise is not only the outlet for self-expression it provides, but the capacity to create a routine that is beautiful to watch.

Transformative for mind and emotions

Lauren Georgiou, a nationally qualified dance teacher who has been dancing for over 25 years and now runs Vibe Dance Studio in Algester and Sunnybank, can testify to the transformative power of dance in her students. “I have had students who were hesitant to walk through the door or stand at the ballet barre. Over time they developed amazing confidence and have proven to themselves that they can do it.” Lauren believes that a lifetime of dancing has taught her the meaning of commitment, dedication and hard work, adding that it helped to boost her confidence while she was growing up. “I could do lots of things my friends were too scared to do. I wasn’t nervous talking in front of people; once you have gotten up and danced in front of a room full of people there’s really nothing you won’t have the courage to do”. The biggest excuse adults provide for avoiding dancing is claiming they have “two left feet”. Whilst it may be true that we can’t all expect to

dance like Michael Jackson, this should not be a deterrent. Lauren explains that “anyone can dance if they really put their mind to it. It is as much about the mind as it is about the physical ability to do the steps. I have seen absolute beginners turn into some of the best dancers as they are the ones who really appreciate the learning process. They love achieving a step and feel on top of the world when they get it right”.

The latest crazes

Dance crazes are born when you pair catchy music with a routine so simple a toddler could do it, and dance history wouldn’t be the same without them. In the 1940s it was the Jitterbug. In the 1960s it was the twist. Who can forget the Macarena from the ‘90s? Last year, Rolling Stone magazine reported that The Dab and Hit the Quan were the latest dance crazes in the US. The Nae Nae, a hip hop dance that uses only the upper body, scored 75 million hits on YouTube.

Closer to home, Lauren Georgiou believes that Tapfit dance classes will be the “next big thing” to hit Australia because they provide a fantastic outlet for adults who are new to dancing or haven’t danced for years. The classes will combine tap steps with a fitness based workout routine. Whether you dance in a class, in your lounge room, or on the dance floor at your local club, it doesn’t matter. Making it a regular part of your life has well documented social and health benefits. Lauren has the final word: “Dance is an art that brings people together. It does not discriminate. It is a way of communication

and expression that allows you to be whoever you want to be. Dance equals happiness.”

8 Retirement living with Chiou See Anderson

Friendships in Retirement ocial wellbeing is intrinsically linked to psychological and physical wellbeing. Our social wellbeing is greatly influenced by the company we keep and the depth of friendship and support we obtain from our network. For those of us who are more advanced in our years, we would have collected many friends along the way. We may have started life with neighbourhood friends, followed by school friends, then sporting / club / interest / religious groups friends, university/tertiary friends, work friends, children’s friends’ parents, in-law friends and situational friends - friendships that arise out of a particular crisis and/or a particular stage in life. We may even make travel friends. Retirement allows us to indulge in spending time with friends of our choosing. However, in order to surround yourself with the right type of friends in retirement, you need to start by imagining how you will spend your leisure time. Some may choose the path of the “grey nomads” and sign up to www.thegreynomads.com.au. There you will find many useful tips, forums and opportunities to meet up with other grey nomad

members whilst discovering the joys of the open road in this wonderful country. Others may seek an interest group like bowls, golf, craft, men’s sheds, garden clubs, Probus, Lions Club, National Seniors, Council of The Ageing, Volunteers Australia, etc and meet like-minded people that way. An interesting and increasingly common way for seniors to make friends is by living in a retirement village. With almost 10% of Australians aged 65 and over living in some form of a seniors community, we need to understand why this type of accommodation is proving to be increasingly popular. Australia is a large continent with a widely dispersed population and scattered families. Australian families typically meet for Christmas, birthdays, funerals, christenings, weddings and mainly live independent lives. Residing in a community provides opportunities to befriend other members and participate in age appropriate activities that are often not available within family networks. Many associations and entertainment groups specifically contact seniors communities with fantastic offerings as it is economical for

them to deliver their services to one location. Participating in activities and events with other retired people provides a meaningful way to form new friendships and interest networks. The advantage of late-life relationships is the luxury to enjoy friendships whilst indulging in a chosen activity. This could take the form of travel to interesting locations in the name of a new found sporting activity like golf or skiing, or an interest group like gardening or photography. A further positive aspect of mature-age friendships is the absence of time restrictions normally endured by career aspirants.

Remember, retirement is not the time to be considering a life of solitude or living in isolation. Poor psychological wellbeing can lead to depression and ill health, caused by lack of mental stimulation. Our ability to cope during a bout of illness or crisis can be greatly improved by our support network and this, in turn, needs to be nourished and treasured as you would good health. So start today by mindfully building friendships that would last you a lifetime.

HOLIDAY ESCAPES with Maria Figuerola

Earthy Italy hen my husband JR and I visited my parents in Spain last August and September, I asked him what he wanted to see on his first trip to Europe. “Mountains and Romans” was his answer. I realised we would have to travel from Barcelona to Italy somehow, and that ‘somehow’ ended up being a big adventure.

W

WWOOF and dive into the ‘real’ Italy

We bought two Eurail tickets to travel through France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. We paid AU$1166 for a 2 people, 4 countries, 6 travel days within 2 months pass. Accommodation came by way of WHOOFing on two farms in Italy: one in Benevento near Naples and one in Ala, up in the pre-Alps. Wwoofing stands for ‘World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms’, and it entrails staying and working several hours a day on a farm in exchange for accommodation and food. By paying the joining fee to WHOOFing Italy we were automatically insured and had access to a listing of over 100 amazing organic farms in every corner of the country. But there is more: We got to

see ‘the real Italy’, where people make their own bread and wine and you get invited to local film festivals, weddings and barn parties. We worked 4 to 6 hours per day on week days. We loved hanging around the farm, feeding the animals and swam in the creek with the family’s kids. That arrangement took care of one month of accommodation. We organised “tour and sightseeing” days in between moving places, spending three night in each of Naples, Rome, Paris, and a night in Nice and three nights in Lausanne. We booked cheap hotels from Australian online, which saved us a lot of headaches.

Getting local advice is gold

City tours and other attractions are expensive. We enjoyed travelling around by public transport, or walking and asking for directions at tourist information centres. We researched where we were visiting before getting there. My mother, who has an Arts History degree, advised us not to go to Pompeii but instead Ercolano, another smaller city that was also swallowed by Vesuvius. We then visited the

Archaeological Museum in Naples (free admittance) that contains all the frescoes, mosaics and artefacts found in both Pompeii and Ercolano. In Naples we stayed at Naples Pizza Hostel, ate sfogliatella and enjoyed the chaos! You must visit Palazzo Venezia (www.palazzovenezianapoli. com).

The landlady told us not to go to Capri Island, which is full of tourists, but to take a ferry from the port of Naples to Procida Island instead. These kinds of recommendations saved us money and made the trip even more enjoyable because we ate where the locals ate and swam where they swam. We were even given bicycles to explore the local Amphitheatre and Roman Baths! Maria Figuerola Spanish Australian Adventurer & Cook

Madampagama Mothers’ Lucky Break Making a Stellar difference to the lives of abandoned senior mums in Sri Lanka he real estate industry is bursting with agents and agencies; you almost cannot go one kilometre without passing another office. When I decided I wanted to start my own agency Stellario Realty Group. I was also looking for an avenue to help the less fortunate even in a small way. However, I also knew there was a business to take care. I do believe that many agencies and agents support charities with generous donations, but I wanted to go a step further and personally undertake a worthy project each year to make someone’s life a little more comfortable in this world. During my January 2015 trip to Sri Lanka, I happened to visit a hostel for senior mothers in Madampagama, a tiny hamlet near Galle in Sri Lanka’s south west. This hostel is a place of refuge and comfort for senior mothers who have sadly been abandoned by their families, and it is all they have to call home in their later years. The hostel was in a terrible state of disrepair with gloomy, unpainted walls, no ceiling (which left the asbestos roof exposed), no proper bathrooms and very old, uncomfortable beds.

T

Plans to refurbish and improve lives I came back to Australia with a heavy heart for the poor conditions these mothers live in but was determined that I could make a difference in their lives. So during 2015, I made sure that for every sale I made in Brisbane, a portion would be earmarked for use in a refurbishment. We set about getting www.southcitybulletin.com.au | March 2016

quotes for all the required work and, all up, it came to around $17 000 AUD. In Sri Lanka, this equated to roughly 1.7 million Sri Lankan Rupees. With these funds safely in hand, the project commenced in October 2015 with a deadline of January 2016, to be ready for the grand-reopening and handover. The renovation work included: painting the entire home, repairing the crumbling roof, and building a new ceiling, new sickbay with sanitary facilities, dining room facilities and three bathrooms. The tired-looking garden got a facelift with new plants and landscaping. We also purchased new recreation equipment such as TVs and outfitted the hostel with new furniture and linen, as well as supplied new clothes to all residents. This project was kindly facilitated by the Foundation of Goodness.

We did it!... Thank you for your support January 1 2016 was a very special day for Stellario Realty Group and myself. Words cannot describe the pride and joy I felt in seeing the faces of the mothers when they saw the refreshed look of their home. This deed was made possible by each and every person in Brisbane who has supported us and conducted a property transaction through us. We will not stop here either. We have a plan for our 2016 charity project and we will be happy to talk about it as the year progresses. Lucky Ramya Tennekoon | Principial Stellario Realty Group | Stellario.com.au | 3343 7770

MEET THE PRINCIPALS Local principals and headmasters speak rincipals and headmasters are the ‘captains at the helm’. They lead their schools towards attaining educational benchmarks and embedding into the culture of the school their unique take on the school and its motto and values. The culture of a school is the ‘underground stream of norms, values, beliefs, traditions and rituals that has built up over time as people work together, solve problems and confront challenges.’ (Kent D. Peterson and Terrence E. Deal) All of these ‘informal expectations’ affect how those in the school think, feel and act, binding the school together and making it special. A school’s motto gives a good indication of the long-held culture and goals of a school. And each new Principal will interpret that motto in their own way to ensure its message is woven through that ‘underground stream’. The mottos of our local schools point to life skills that go beyond academic education and into shaping the character of our future leaders. Be inspired by what our local principals have to say about the schools they are so invested in. It’s reassuring to know the leaders at the helm are so proud of their school and its students.

LUKE SMITH There has never been a better time to be living in Logan. We are a growing city with more people and businesses moving here each year to live, work and play. But on March 19, Logan residents have an important decision to make: to vote for a new mayor to lead Logan to a bright future. At this election, I will be seeking your support to become Mayor and take Logan into an exciting future. I was born and raised here and I have served as a Logan City Councillor for the past ten years. I have the local knowledge and experience in leadership to take on this role. Local knowledge

Through my various roles of service to the Logan community spanning three decades, I have seen many changes that make us the city we are today. In my role as a Logan City Councillor for the past decade, I have gained a unique understanding of some of the challenges we face as a city and I am acutely aware of the resources and infrastructure we need to address these challenges. Logan City needs a leader who knows and understands the community and can work with them on any issue, big or small.

I love Logan. This is my home. “I grew up here and I’m raising my family here. I want to work with you to make it even better.

Experienced leadership

In addition to serving as a Logan City Councillor, I have also held the position of Chair of Governance, Finance and Economic Development for the past seven years, delivering seven surplus budgets to put Logan City in its best financial position in decades and rolling out new city-wide initiatives for residents such as the popular ‘Eats and Beats’ events. Logan needs a leader who will champion jobs, business, our natural environment and the need for city-wide infrastructure. Logan needs a leader who will fight for funding from the state and federal governments to keep Logan moving forward in the right direction. I am a local. I have the knowledge and the experience in leadership to take you, your family and our city forward into an exciting future. Together, over the next four years, we can make Logan an even better place to live, work and play.

We offer mindfulness and meditation to students, calming and focussing the mind and regulating energy for optimum learning. Our Arts Academy offers one-onone tuition, masterclasses, performance opportunities and partnerships with tertiary and professional arts companies. In 2015 alone, our sportspeople

achieved 8 Premierships, 37 South Coast School Sport regional representations, 10 Queensland School Sport representatives and Gold medals in a range of sports. Other clubs include The Dark Side Astronomy Club, Chess Club, Art Studio and Photography Club. We are delighted to have extended our Playgroup program to two mornings a week, as well as adding an extra part time Kindergarten class from Term 2 this year. This is testament to the hard work of our teachers to ensure that Canterbury is a place where big dreams become bright futures.

Creating Our Future In 2016 at Villanova College we believe the best way to predict the future is to create it! The theme for the 2016 Academic Year is “Creating Our Future”. Our theme challenges our staff, students and parents to play an active role in planning for the future as we explore the possibilities available in teaching and learning in a technology-rich environment. This year the College has introduced phase one of the Bring Your Own DeviceBYOD Program where students in Years 5, 7 and 10 bring their own laptop to their classrooms. This program has allowed students and families to choose www.southcitybulletin.com.au | March 2016

the appropriate laptop for their son’s educational needs. Through the families purchasing the laptop there is a greater sense of ownership and care of the laptop by the students. During 2016 Villanova College will be undertaking a master planning process to prepare for the future. The Master Plan will guide the development of the College facilities at the two campuses at Coorparoo and the playing fields at Tingalpa. The new facilities being planned for the College will allow 21st Century teaching and learning to continue to engage our students and prepare them for a bright future.

tradition. Our College’s philosophy is based on a commitment to education as liberation. We accept students from Year 5 to Year 12, drawing from a wide area of Brisbane. The school has 101 years’ of history and the enrolment of the school is over 1800 boys for 2016. Each school year it is my mission to educate and assist our students, along with parents and guardians, in all that the boys strive to become. Together we can work towards building a sustainable community where our boys scale new heights with an education at St Laurence’s College.

Th R The Runcorn Way Pride, Success and Excellence As an experienced educator, the proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is one that resonates with me daily. I believe when students, teachers, parents and members of the broader community work together, educational excellence is a likely outcome. At Runcorn State High School we believe in knowing every student and how they learn, and use a case management approach to support each student to succeed. The Runcorn Way is underpinned by the values of Pride, Success and Excellence and behaviours of Common sense, Co-operation, Courtesy and Consideration, which are modelled by staff and students alike to create a harmonious, inclusive learning environment.

Teaching staff are always looking for innovative ways to support student learning. In 2015, the internationally acclaimed Duke of Edinburgh Award, as one example, was introduced to complement the existing arts, sporting, technology and academic curriculum. In 2016, the school celebrates 30 years of providing a very high standard of secondary schooling to local families. I am looking forward to Image Nation, a celebration of visual and performing arts, in October. I am proud of our recent successes: academic excellence and vocational pathways for our graduating students, the basketball and touch football academies and the fastest F1 car in Queensland.

Achieve with Dignity The strong and clear plan for success at Shailer Park State High delivered in abundance in 2015, with the school delivering record NAPLAN and senior school outcomes. A whopping 87% of our Year 12 OP-eligible students achieved an OP between 1–15, while 100% achieved an OP from 1–17! Added to this, 100% of students achieved either their QCE or QCIA. This means that every student achieved the qualification they set out to achieve and all students have a pathway to success! The remarkable improvement in the school’s Year 9 NAPLAN results during 2015 offered further proof that our research-based methods work. We know that if we continue to trust the explicit teaching methods we have chosen, our results will continue to improve. We are all very excited about the future of our school. At Shailer Park High, the future is bright and successful as we live out our motto – “Achieve with Dignity.”

We are extremely proud of the graduating Class of 2015. They earned outstanding academic results with 88% of students receiving an OP 1-15 and over 25% receiving an OP of 1-5. EDUCATION SKILLS & TRAINING with Amanda Sheehan

Is your child gifted? Gifted Awareness Week Australia – 13–19 March s parents we all believe our children are special. We watch rapturously as they crawl, take their first steps and utter their first words. Of course we are all correct – each and every child is indeed special and unique. But around ten percent of children fall into what experts refer to as the Gifted and Talented category, a group with its own needs and characteristics. There are many common misconceptions about gifted children. A gifted child does not sit at the piano for the first time and begin playing Mozart. Nor do they re-invent the theory of relativity. On the contrary, a gifted child is usually one who consistently achieves well above the requirements for their school year level. This is often accompanied by an unquenchable passion for learning, and in technical terms their IQ exceeds 130.

A

Traits of a gifted child

As a toddler, a gifted child may reach milestones early, and as they get older, they may exhibit the following traits: • ability to use complex sentences, with a highly developed vocabulary

• preference to “hang out” with older children or adults and participate in adult conversations.

• excellent memory • strong leadership qualities

It is important to note that outstanding school achievements may not always be the primary indicator for a gifted child. In fact, some children can go through their schooling years without ever being recognised as a gifted student. Albert Einstein, for example, did not learn to read until he was aged seven and did not speak until later again. If they are not placed in the correct learning environment, the most gifted of children can easily become despondent, bored, low achievers who appear to others to be behaviourally challenged and intellectually below average.

heightened sensitivity that, coupled with their perpetual need to be challenged, can present a very challenging parenting situation. Regardless of that, you must remember that they are still children.” Next month: Education and parenting options for gifted children.

Parenting challenges

• unquenchable curiosity about the world around them and a need to receive immediate and detailed explanations. They will frequently ask questions that display a highly developed understanding of the world around them.

• the ability to pick up new skills effortlessly and learn new subjects at school faster than their peers

• enjoy alone time. While gifted me children may enjoy spending time with others, including mental mates (whether their own age or nding adults), they can also enjoy spending time on more solitary activities such as reading, writing, daydreaming, observing or just thinking.

While the perception may be that parents who have gifted children have an easy ride, this is not always the case. Therese Jefferson, mother of a 9-year-old child who is gifted and talented, explains that “parenting a gifted and talented child is a totally different experience from parenting one who is not. These children are almost like a special needs group on their own; in fact, that is what I believe they are. Their constant thirst for knowledge means they can often run rings around their siblings and parents from an early age. Gifted and talented children seem to feel everything more intensely and have a

GOURMET with Sam Lee Lychee

The sweet and juicy lychee or “Litchi, Leechee, Lichee, Lichi” has always meant the arrival of summer and the nearing of the festive season. The lychee is only available during the summer months when hard pink or red fruits appear on large bushy trees. As well as their striking appearances the lychee is also highly nutritious and actually has cooling properties that make them perfect for the long hot summer months.

Tutti frutti Exotic summer recipes

Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit, or pitaya, is a climbing cactus that primarily originated in Mexico, Central America and South America. The Dragon Fruit is striking with its eccentric colours of hot pinks and yellows. But for all its brightness the fruit has a surprisingly bland fl avour, similar to that of melon or kiwifruit. It is also like a kiwi fruit with edible seeds dotted all throughout the flesh. The yellow fruits have white flesh inside and the pink varieties are either scarlet pink or white inside. Dragon Fruit Smoothie 1 dragon fruit 1 banana 6 medium strawberries 1 tsp fresh mint + 2 springs for garnish 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 2 cups ice Method 1. Chop fruit into large pieces. 2. Add yogurt, dragon fruit, strawberries, banana and mint to a blender in that order. Blend until small chunks. 3. Add ice to the blender and blend until smooth. 4. Serve immediately, garnish with a sprig of mint. www.southcitybulletin.com.au | March 2016

Papaya

Thought by Christopher Columbus to be the “fruit of angels” the Papaya is a medium to large sized sweet fruit found in most fruit or grocery stores and is generally available all year around. The peak of the Papaya is early summer when the fruit is sweet and rich with black seeds in the centre. The Papaya contains a large amount of antioxidants and other nutrients and is widely used in the beauty industry as well as the supplement industry and is noted as a key component to aid in digestive health. Red Papaya and Mixed Berry Parfaits 400g Red Papaya 500g (2 cups) natural Greek or vanilla yoghurt 200g (2 cups) toasted muesli or granola 250g (2 cups) frozen mixed berries 1 tbsp water Method In a saucepan over medium heat, simmer berries and water for four to five minutes, until just warm and syrupy. Mash slightly with a fork and set aside to cool while you peel, de-seed and dice papaya. Spoon 2 tablespoons muesli (or granola) into the base of four glasses. Layer each glass with ¼ cup yoghurt, 2 tablespoons berry compote, ¼ cup diced papaya and 2 tablespoons granola. Repeat layers and serve immediately.

Lychee, Mango & Coconut Terrine 24 Lychees, peeled and seeded 1L Weis’ Mango Sorbet, slightly softened 270ml can light coconut cream 20g pkt roasted coconut chips Lime rind to serve Method Line the base and sides of a 20 x 10cm (base measurement) loaf pan with non-stick baking paper, allowing the 2 long sides to overhang. Chop half the lychees. Combine sorbet, chopped lychees and coconut cream in a bowl. Transfer to prepared pan and smooth the surface. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze for 4 hours or overnight until firm. Turn terrine onto a serving platter. Top with remaining lychees, coconut chips and lime rind.

Are you balanced? Balance and stability exercises benefit everyone, young and old Lauren – professional dancer

alance and stability exercises are often overlooked as important aspects of your health and fitness routine. Even if you aren’t a performance based athlete, simple balance exercises can add real value to your life, exercise programs and sporting performances.

B

Gillian completing the 1 legged standing balance test

• improved co-ordination • burns greater calories e.g. the difference between walking lunges and static lunges • reduces injuries from falls, which is so important in our older generation • greater fun and variety e.g. playing games with the kids by throwing a ball while standing on one leg.

• greater neuromuscular connection by improving the pathways between the brain and the muscle.

Let’s test your balance Step 1. Make sure you are in a safe place and free of any trip hazards or sharp edges. Lift one leg off the ground and time how long you can hold it without putting the leg down or moving the foot.

Step 3. Repeat Step 1 for the opposite leg.

You do not need to be as advanced as professional dancer Lauren (see picture) to get the benefits of balance exercises. For non-exercisers these exercises can be even more critical as they may not get these in other ways. Some benefits include:

• improved core strength and function

• less sporting injuries due to better postural alignment

Step 2. Stop if you have reached longer that 2 mins

General benefits

• improved posture – If our ankle strength and stability are limited, our muscles through our hip complex have to work harder and become tighter, causing muscle imbalance which can lead to a variety of different aches and pains.

Step 4. Start on the original leg, get your balance and focus then close your eyes. Don’t forget to time how long you can stay balanced. Georgia (Australian netball representative) improving her core strength and stability

Benefits for exercisers

Most recreational exercisers tend to focus on the technical skills, fitness requirements and strength demands of their specific sport. As a result they can get some great performance improvements with: • faster response times • greater power as the body has to stabilise first before using its strength e.g. try jumping from a unstable surface versus a flat surface. Step 5. Repeat Step 4 with the opposite leg with eyes closed. Results: If you are over 2 mins, this is considered good. 1 mins to 2 mins is normal with under 1 mins needing improvement. You may also notice a difference between your left and right legs as well as the difference between your eyes open to closed. To get the best results, focus on your weaker side or eyes open/eyes closed so that you will become more balanced!

ast week I was gobsmacked when my daughter brought home a prize from school for “always following instructions”. Could this be the same child who has to be told seven times each morning to brush her hair and put on her school shoes? She proudly showed off the new eraser and ruler she had selected herself from the classroom prize box. Whilst I am thrilled that my kids behave themselves at school, sometimes I feel a little let down that at home, with me, is the place they choose to let it all hang out and seemingly forget every good behaviour rule known to man. But rather than bemoan this fact, I recently decided to take a leaf out of the teachers’ books and after spending a morning down at one of the local $2 shops, my very own prize box was born. The next morning, I told the children that the prize box would be open for business that very afternoon, and it seemed to work its magic straight away. Once home from school they gleefully raced inside, carrying their school bags and taking their shoes off without having to be told. Was this prize box the “missing link” in my hitherto hit and miss disciplinary approach, I asked myself? The three of them sat, enraptured and gazing longingly at the contents of the box, which I had placed on the

L

kitchen table in all its glory. I allowed my eldest to choose first. Amy chose – the pink highlighter. Then it was Emma’s turn. She wanted a pink highlighter also. “There’s only one pink one darling,” I told her. “But there is a yellow one if you would like that,” This did not go down well. It was the pink one she wanted. From there the situation deteriorated rapidly. Tears ensued and the two girls retreated to their rooms in devastation. Under my breathe I called the prize box by a different name entirely, not to be repeated here. Moments later Amy emerged from her room and called to Emma. She seemed to have reconsidered her options and handed her the pink highlighter. I applauded her kindness but the peace was short-lived as Emma quickly realised that the only reason her sister had surrendered the pink pen was that it didn’t work. More tears. Then a battle broke out over the remaining yellow highlighter. “Enough!” I announced. I put the prize box away, dejected. Everyone retreated to their bedrooms and moments later returned to the kitchen, apologetic. We started over. Over the coming days, the prize box was seriously sought after, but just a few teething

problems needed attention. In the minds of my children, it seemed that every single effort and job completed warranted a prize. “I just went to the toilet,” my 5-year-old declared on day two. “That means I get a prize”. After some basic parameters were set, things settled, and the behaviour in our household seems to definitely have improved overall. Just how long a box of random stationery supplies and stickers will guarantee domestic harmony I don’t know. But as long as I can buy at least two of every item I figure it’s worth a shot. (Ed: And perhaps that green-eyed monster of envy won’t appear!)

SOUL with Annette Lee

Mindfulness Learn to be present in the moment and in touch with your reality used to take the word ‘mindfulness’ to mean some idolised state of altered consciousness while perhaps sitting in an impossibly difficult position. Now I know differently. Mindfulness is simply focusing your attention where you are right now, in this moment to the next. You are simply observing what is arising and passing in each moment, without judgement.

I

Mindfulness cuppa

A simple mindfulness exercise can be followed while making a cuppa! Focus on each particular part of the process of making the cup of tea, from the feel of the kettle in your hand, placing the tea in the cup or teapot, watching the water fill it up, to the eventual moment when you lift the cup to your lips, feel the heat touch your lips and the liquid starts to enter your mouth. You notice the taste, the heat, the texture, even on the feeling of it as you swallow, feeling it move into your body and staying with this until you finish the entire cup.

Experience your life in the moment

Why would you want to focus so much on having a cup of tea? For a start, it gives you a direct experience of your life in that very moment. We spend most of our lives jumping from one thing to the next, often not really present with what we’re doing or why we’re doing it. Having a direct experience of your present moment reminds you that you are here, alive. It brings you back to reality where you can feel, sense, touch, taste, hear and be completely absorbed in what is happening to you and what you feel/think about it. How many times do we talk to someone and know they’re not really there with you? They’re thinking about something or someone else. We all do it. If you are mindful when you are with someone, you are fully present and the other person can feel that and quite frankly, it feels nice.

If you’re on the receiving end of being with a mindful person, you feel heard, validated and valued.

Benefits of mindfulness From a science point of view, much research has indicated numerous benefits to mindfulness including: reduced rumination, stress reduction, boosts to working memory, less emotional reactivity, more cognitive flexibility and relationship satisfaction. It has even been shown to enhance intuition and fear modulation, self-insight

and morality. If we are studying, we can absorb information in more depth. With mindfulness we can choose our words and our actions so they cause no harm. Mindfulness is a skill for enhancing your life. Why not try it with your next cup of tea or with the next person you talk to?
